We were talking about a new Trek series that would be a sitcom. Trek could really do a sitcom. It could rip on all the gaping plot holes and general silliness by providing goofy explanations the entire way through. And of course there would be other problems.
It would be set at either Starfleet Academy or the Federation equivalent of a state school. Either way, it would be about a group of slackers getting into trouble and doing the bare minimum to get by.
It would be set directly after "Wrath of Kahn", and the pilot would be called "Spock is Dead". The students react to the death of a Starfleet hero:
"I have bad news. You're going to want to put your flap down for this one, Steve."
What do you think of the idea?

shields aren't perfect
they are tuned to allow thru soem energies but not others( can't fight if you can't see)- as a photon torpedo is a gallon of anit matter iron going .9 c, when it hits it makes a very big broad specturm boom. shields take up most of it, but some gets thru.

I've destroyed many a philosophical debate by logic bombs. Or by pointing out that we are essentially a series of chemical processes given sentience.
I would like to examine these bombs.
And yes, it very much looks like we are a series of chemical processes that think. Epistemologically speaking, we can never be 100% sure of this, though. We know from experience that things are not as they appear. My keyboard looks like a solid object, but in reality it's a network of bajillions of tiny things called molecules that are buzzing around like bees! How are we to know that that's the end of it?

A philosophical argument is basically an assertion that is justified by reasons. There are good philosophical arguments and bad ones. But you can't just make a statement. You have to back it up with something.
I don't know much about nothingness, myself. I've never really considered it. There's plenty of somethingness to keep my mind occupied.
And logic.. Western philosophers will tell you that Aristotle invented logic. It's been refined significantly since. But that's just part of the answer. Formal logical systems are man made, but they follow natural laws. I almost took a class on this this semester, but I opted out at the last minute. Interesting stuff.
Take the idea of logical consequence:
We have two premises:
1) If I stick my hand into the flame, then my skin will burn
2) I stick my hand into the flame.
What's the logical consequent of these two statements?

Modus Ponens.. A man-made rule of inference. If the two above premises are true, the conclusion (my skin will burn) must be true. It's a logical consequent. And it works in reality. Logic also demands consistency.

This is a perfectly valid argument, because the premises, if true, lead to the conclusion. It is of course not true, If I kick a duck, odds are I'd be using my health insurance card ;D

Some readers will be impatient with all this. Everyone knows that philosophers
only pose problems and never solve them. Solutions to the important
puzzles reside with the sciences. So it is to science that we should turn if
we are ever to understand the mind and its place in the world. Residual
problems, problems not susceptible to scientific answers, are at bottom
phony pseudo-problems. Answers we give to them make no difference; any
‘solution’ you care to offer is as good as any other.
Although understandable, this reaction is ill-considered. The success of
science has depended on a well-defined division of labor coupled with a
strategy of divide and conquer. There is no such thing as science; there are
only sciences: physics, chemistry, meteorology, geology, biology, psychology,
sociology. Each of these sciences (and of course there are others) carves
off a strictly circumscribed domain. Staking out a domain requires delimiting
permissible questions. In this way, every science passes the buck. The
practice of buck-passing is benign, because in most cases the buck is passed
eventually to a science where it stops. Sometimes, however, the buck is
passed out of the sciences altogether. Indeed, this is inevitable. The sciences
do not speak with a single voice. Even if every science were fully successful
within its domain of application, we should still be left with the question of
how these domains are related, how pronouncements of the several sciences
are to be calibrated against one another. And this question is, quite clearly,
not a question answerable from within any particular science.
Enter metaphysics. One traditional function of metaphysics – or, more
particularly, that branch of metaphysics called ontology – is to provide an
overall conception of how things are. This includes not the pursuit of

That was what happened with Ms. Duck and LavinChen. You will see me explode in joy when the following people visit Weird again: Wizwad, Parthagenon, Fireworks, Mousewynne, Garrat, Helen, Horsehearted, Lisa. There also many not so regular of Weird that I haven't seen in months that I will receive with enthusiasm if they come (Vryce, Me Grindlock King, Kilroy, many others).

Glad your car got fixeded Ala! I know how awesome it feels to finally have a fully functioning car. I used to have a black bug, but it always had problems. I eventually got a Honda instead and it's over 200,000 miles and still runs like new! It only needs basic stuff and entirely cheaper. It's an Accord V6 sedan. <3 <3 Honda!

But if you really feel I am totally useless because you can learn all from the books, then (here) you can present to a special test amd that's all. You don't need to come to the classes. But I wouldn't advice you to do that.

Honestly im not a functional person in class. In my work i get along just fine when im not narrowly avoiding death.
Some teachers are just not role models. I do look up to some. My AP Lit teacher taught me things about reading and writing that were amazing.
I have the utmost respect for all teachers.
Professors on the other hand, must earn my respect. I've had far too many miserable, rude, and condescending professors in college that abused the fact they are practically impossible to fire.
If my High School teachers had not of been so excellent, I would never have survived some of the previously mentioned terrible professors.

Don't feel bad. If that's the way you learn, that's the way you learn. There's not a damned thing you or anyone else can do about that.
Teachers love questions, but not when they are so much that the whole class is derailed. I had some students like that, and, as a student, I had some of them as classmates. I hated them much more when I was a student because I couldn't concentrate.
Just think before you ask a question, or moderate yourself. Don't take up thewhole class's time, but ask those few qustions you think most important.

You could be right. He seems interested in the subject matter, he shows up to class, he reads the material. For all I know he's a good student. In philosophy, it's easy to get worked up and want to explore a bunch of things that aren't necessarily relevant to what's being discussed at the moment.
It's a group of people who are pretty well acquainted with one another hashing out personal issues. So, technically speaking, yes.

They were both Contractualists, meaning that the people had a natural interest to sign over some of their rights to a higher power (i.e., the State).My argument may not be the soundest as I haven't really factored in the implications of creating a state and how theory and reality differentiate, but I think from a hypothetical point of view the argument makes a certain amount of sense. Besides, I liked reading your interpretation. No need to apologize.
Their starting principles were very different, though. They both reflected on what was termed, "the state of nature" (methinks). They had very different ideas of what the state of nature was like, though. Hobbes has a pessimistic view that humanity was in a state of perpetual war where Locke though that people lived in general peace, but the majority of disputes had to do with property rights. These ideas greatly influence their conceptions of "the Social Contract" itself.
So Hobbes argues that the only solution was for people to sign all of their rights away to "the Sovereign" or "the Leviathan" while Locke developed the ida of limited government, centered around separation of powers.
But if you take Hobbes's view of the state of nature, separation of power isn't going to do much good. Seeing as though instead of one Sovereign, you might end up with a group of sovereigns in collusion (i.e., oligarchy). And we have empiricle evidence that oligarchies can, in fact, be absolutist (Fascist Italy is the boldest recent example).
Locke's idea that separation of powers only works if you have Locke's point of view about the general nature of humanity. But again, we have empirical evidence in regard to Locke's theories. It's called the United States. Originally, the Founders modeled the Constitution on Locke's principles, but they did not stop by merely separating powers. They also built in constitutional limitations on each of the branches, because they were suspicious of a powerful state in any form. They also diffused power between the Federal and state governments. Two years later they also included the Bill of Rights (further limitations). And let's not forget the Civil War. After this, the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments were passed. The 14th amendment is not very well known, but it is by far the most important amendment in the Constitution in regard to civil liberties.
Theories are just starting points. Once put into practice, they are never the way they are on paper. Without these limits, we very well could be an absolute state today.

I've taken it before. They make the test a lot harder than the questions on the show. I did surprisingly well. They don't tell us our scores, but I got at least 40 out of 50. I don't know if 80% is enough for a call back though

Actually, no. Granted it was a semi-auto. I've never fired a fully automatic weapon. Mad dad is kind of a gun nut, and we had a small arsenal, growing up. That included an AK-47. It was legal at the time. I'm not sure if it is anymore, but he got rid of it years ago.
The first time I fired a shotgun it was a 12 gauge with a slug round. I was 12 years old. It knocked me on my ass :-\

I thought many times later if we could have done something for him, because something must have causing his bad behavior. I was told he died (overdose) when he was a teen. I can't watch 3D. Literally. The average human needs 25 frames per second for a fluid moving picture, I need about 30 to 35, depending on what I'm watching. Movies are shown with 24 frames per second, so movies are a little laggy for me anyways, but 3D seems to overflow my brain and it's even more laggy to me. The last 3D movie I saw I was "What the frak is happening??" during every fast scene and about 50% of the time during the rest. It sucks.
When I heard they were bringing the Lion King back into the theaters I went and bought it in HD and watched it again. Hadn't seen it for maybe 15 years. And still I cried like a little girl when Mufasa died. Ah, good times.
Just think about it, we have more Denzions of the SHOV now, and we are all becoming better friends so we spend more time here. Im gonna say it's cool.
