I will find a way to be there.
Sue and I are booking a room and getting con tickets now. How we're getting there has yet to be settled. 'Cellie, I'm getting a psychic vibe... *holds index fingers to temples* you will be... yes, it's getting clearer to me now... you will be coughing and weak on the day before. It's true; I saw it through the eyes of your boss.
Luck SOB :P
The fact you /can/ go makes you lucky in my book, I can't even the opportunity to shell out the cash and I want to go bad...
Room and tickets done. Now deciding what to do to get there. Thinking driving, cause I have no issues with an 8hour drive.
Plane tickets purchased! Con ticket purchased! Booking room right now! Will apply for a "Personal Day" when I get to work tomorrow.
IT'S HAPPENING.
Why apply for a personal day? After all, you're going to be "sick". ;D
I am totally going to try and come meet you all at the airport, but I'm not sure 1) how I'm going to get down there, and 2) logistics. I'll do my darndest, though.
Richmond's on my way to Williamsburg. :D
Hmm. I wonder if Jim would be game for another fan dinner...
Obviously, not as elaborate as the NYCC one, but festive and dinnerful nonetheless....
Which other thread?
Where would you like Jim to appear thread.Which was where I saw Chiro post about Marscon and subsequently broke Garrett. ;D
Which was where I saw Chiro post about Marscon and subsequently broke Garrett. ;Dmade him sputter in typeface.. thats skill right there.
made him sputter in typeface.. thats skill right there.
I got my ticket, and my friend reserved us a hotel room.Cause you found the awesome!
Why am I suddenly being followed on Twitter? :P :D
Sheky...rush hour from Norfolk Int'l to Williamsburg can be a PITA. But it's no where near as bad as rush hour in say, DC. Remember to wave as you make your final approach, you'll fly over my house.
I'm poking the hubs about getting us tickets now...WANT TO GO!!
Also if you happen to check the traffic and I-64 (Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel)is bad you have the option of driving I-664 (Monitor Merrimac Bridge Tunnel)around and back to 64.
Ah. The MarsCon website says they're frequently hit with wintry weather. And I'm from Texas, where everyone COMPLETELY FREAKS OUT at the merest hint of a flurry. :DRachel is from Texas as well. We'll get ya though this ;D
The closest retaurant is probably the Outback steakhouse. But there are a number of other chain restaurants nearby. The hotel is on Richmond Road, which is essentially the main drag for hotels and restaurants in Williamsburg. If you want something local instead of a chain, there's a great Italian place called Sal's not too far down the road, but I'm not sure they take reservations. You can always check. Even though it is January, that place gets busy on Saturday nights. If you like Oriental food, there is a local favorite called Mongolian Barbecue, which is quite popular and not too expensive. It's a buffet, and they can definitely handle large groups. Hope that helps! If not, let me know, and I'll try and think of some others.
Behold the wonder of Shecky.... who just convinced PG that we should go.
Shecky, you a lot more influence with my husband than I do. :D
Because I'm just so darned pretty.
As for the dinner, I think what would be the primary factor is a combo of location, availability of a room that's big enough (from what I've seen in the past, just having a non-separate section of a restaurant is dicey at best), price and universal gastronomic accessibility (i.e., appeals to the widest range of people).
*votes for Sal's b/c she can't eat at Mongolian BBQ*

Oh? Vegetarian?
In that case, Sal's is one of the better options. Most of the other restaurants in the area are delis (great food, cheap, but small) or chains. Williamsburg, the tourist mecca. :P
Ah. The MarsCon website says they're frequently hit with wintry weather. And I'm from Texas, where everyone COMPLETELY FREAKS OUT at the merest hint of a flurry. :DOh, I remember those days. Always trying to figure out if school was going to be closed, or if it would get delayed by 2 hours because there *might* be the *possibility* of black ice. Though there was the one time in about 5th grade that we got sent home cause there was no frikkin heat in the school. Now, Rob looks at me crazy cause I like playing in the snow. ;D
Is it wrong of me to sorta kinda hope for snow so we can have a snowball fight at con?
As long as you all don't gang up to test Kiera's and my "shields." :D

Now that would be a video I'd pay to see :D:D:D:D
What? I'm not sadistic
<.<
>.>
:o
I would pay to be PART of that. *looks up* okay, who do I have to bribe to get me some snow that weekend?:D This would be one of those times where I actually *wouldn't* be taking pictures. Too much fun to take part of.
I would pay to be PART of that. *looks up* okay, who do I have to bribe to get me some snow that weekend?
If you get snow, I know some LOVELY places on the W&M campus to stage a snowball fight. ;D Make a great backdrop for said pictures.
*pokes* Would you be able to make it down to this?
Maybe PA will get some snow. I can make snowballs and preserve them in an insulated cooler and bring them with me.
And a big fake cigar. And walk around saying "Yeah...schee"
Until the Gruffs showed up. Then it would be "Yeah...sidhe."
No, heavens no. I'm allergic to MSG and similar preservatives. I *still* haven't met a Chinese restaurant I've not regretted eating at, whether they advertise to be MSG free or not. :'( And I *really* like Chinese food!!!
So true. And come to think of it, most of the ones on my list the tables aren't configured well for large groups. I've not eaten at Sal's but my parents and grandparents rave about it.
As long as you all don't gang up to test Kiera's and my "shields." :D
*whines* i forsee me and pris vs the rest of you... i hope my precog is wrong.I'd stand with you ladies! Chivalry is not dead!
*whines* i forsee me and pris vs the rest of you... i hope my precog is wrong.
Knowing you two? You'll win. :Dwhy do you think I wanna side with them? I aint stupid ;D
I am neutral. And I am enforcing that by threatening anyone who throws a snowball at me with taking my shirt off at them.
Who says I'll throw it at you? *whistles to PG to bring in the dump truck of snow*
I am neutral. And I am enforcing that by threatening anyone who throws a snowball at me with taking my shirt off at them.and if that fails will you unleash Sue? That should end things rather quickly :)
That just provides an unclothed target at which to throw snowballs.
and if that fails will you unleash Sue? That should end things rather quickly :)
I do not leash her. I prefer my hands to stay attached to my arms.

I'm imagining some Kipling-esque story of "How Shecky Got Long Arms."
More like "How Shecky was Forced to Learn to Type with His Feet."
Clearly, you were never in a production of The Elephant's Child in your youth. :D
I played the Monkey. I ROCKED the part. I still remember my opening line. I was five.
You are now required to do that at MarsCon.Cocktails AND Theater? this con is getting better and better by the moment.
There are cocktails? Make mine a double!
Darling, there are ALWAYS cocktails.cocktails?!?! yes please!
We may have to bring the Dresdenverse drink menu (http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,15899.msg942226.html#msg942226) back out. :DI didn't imbibe at NYCC so this time I think I shall since the con is at the hotel. That is if Rachel will pour me into the room just this once ;D
I'll just have the waiter.

Heck, I barely ate at the fan dinner. I was kind of a wreck. I plan to be a lot more relaxed at MarsCon! :DKind of a wreck? took you 10 minutes to get through bubble Wrap. Jim Heckled you. You full on wrecked and made it look amazing! I continue to be amazed by you! I wanna bottle whatever you got so I can get something done for once I swear.

Hey, I needed to keep that bubble wrap intact so that I could get everything home safely!
Also, I was a wreck. :D
You know, I was toying with the idea of doing something in the talent show, too. Haven't decided for sure, yet.
And Pris, I wasn't even you and I bolted MY food at the last dinner. In fact, I knelt on the floor next to a low table and pretty much inhaled it! :D
It would be a talentless show if I was in it. :P
Well, there IS that talent show Saturday afternoon. Which I fully plan on having something for.
Talent show? When did I miss this?
You> Me. Tha Funk ;D
Somebody gotta bring the Mothership.Hope they have room for it in the parking lot :)
So yes, we'll definitely end up pooling rides. I doubt there will be any issue. We had to pool rides at ConDFW, and that was ridiculously easy to figure out. Except when I accidentally kidnapped Jim and Shannon. Whoops.
Well, if it were like NYC and the traffic physically can't get past 20 MPH before the next traffic light, it'd be okay. I just don't like having people walk beside (much less try to cross) 45 MPH-limit roads. Because traffic usually goes 10 MPH higher and that cuts out any ability to dodge.

Jim can back up my story! The highway exit WASN'T MARKED! I had to circle around twice!
I walk along those roads all the time. Run along the highway (65+) every now and again, too.
I didn't mention that. :D
I am one of the organizers of MarsCon and wanted to post a little information for everyone coming. Someone posted about doing the "Time Warp". Well we have a group attending "Fishnet Inc." that performs at the local "Rocky Horror" shows and they will be there on Friday Night for a double feature of "Clue" followed by "Rocky Horror". We have tons of entertainment on Friday and Saturday night, and Saturday Night is our Party Night. It will be easy to find an open party.

For those flying in - You might want to check flights into the Newport News/Williamsburg airport. It is closer to the hotel (between 20 - 30 minutes depending on traffic).

I also wanted to post on your dinner plans. Sal's is a good choice. They have great pizza and subs, and the entrees I have there are good. I haven't been to their Richmond Road location. Their original location burned a short time ago, so they relocated to the current place.
What night are you planning to host your dinner plans? I might force my chairman to join you if that is okay. Get her out of the hotel for a little while. I will also let our programming chairman know to give Jim and Shannon a larger block of time for dinner.
Behold the Glory of Pris in Con-Planning Mode! :D
And thank you for taking the time to talk to all of us, Marscon organizer!
Sure thing! In fact, I think it's time for a head count. I'll add one to the first post in the thread. If you're in, post either your first and last name or your preferred alias, plus the number of guests you'll be bringing, if any.
OK, PG has still not decided if we're coming FOR SURE yet... but please add Paynesgray and Onlyelise and I'll make him make a decision. :D
Nicole +2
Garrett/Warden Butters/IndustriousLittleGnomeMkII, take your pick. :D
Shecky and Sue Sheckyswife. ;D
Count 2 others - Chairman Carolyn and her beau Rich.
Also, by the way, my name is Butch and I was the chairman for the last 3 MarsCon's and was the one that contacted Jim and Shannon about attending. I'm still pretty much involved so if you have any questions about the con I can answer them.
I've added Carolyn and Rich. If you'd like to join us, let me know!
Folks, I've made a tentative reservation at Sal's for 30 people at 7pm. The guy assured me that they are very flexible, so if I need to change the time or number of people, there shouldn't be a problem.
Priscellie,
Thank you! Matt F.
Oh, oh, oh, I am sooooo there, dinner and all. Heck Mrs. Serack and I have a year long pass at Colonial Williamsburg.
SIGN ME UP!
Edited to add: Mrs. Serack says she might start reading the books after the Harry Potter Movie release, but she's not sure since she just started classes again and the schedule is grueling. When I mentioned the NYCC after the fact she said how she woulda liked to have gone, but she wasn't sure about going to the fan dinner and denighing a true fan of the opportunity. Is there limited seating?
Rachel/StarbeamI am answering for myself and I shall be WHINGNUT so the people from here will know me!
I'll let Rob answer for himself. :D
Priss, I edited again, My buddy that intro'd me to the series is in too so give me a +1 please.
Oh my. Serack, no jumping Jim for a WoJ pow-wow session, mmk? ;)Agreed we all have to share Jim while I bogart Shannon ;)
Hi Garrett,
Talked to the hotel earlier today and they have a piano they can move in the bar area where the talent show will be held.
Butch
Oh my. Serack, no jumping Jim for a WoJ pow-wow session, mmk? ;)
Will you be playing at 9 o'clock on Saturday while the regular crowd shuffles in?
Nope. 2 o'clock, maybe. Talent show's from 2-4. :DPossible facepalm coming? Or did it just not quite compute, Garrett?
Possible facepalm coming? Or did it just not quite compute, Garrett?
*sips a jynnan tonnyx*THANK YOU! I knew you or Shecky would get it ;D
I was gonna say that I am NOT gonna be volunteered to make love to my tonic and gin, but leave it to 'Cellie to find a classier way to get around it.thats why we all love her so much. I wonder if Garrett has face palmed yet?
THANK YOU! I knew you or Shecky would get it ;D
i got it. and pris don't forget meeeeee
i got it. and pris don't forget meeeeeeoh you getting it was a given.....for certain reasons ;D
Having met and spoken with Jim Serack you are in for a treat. I really want to chat with him again for sure but I'm really amped up to meet Shannon we have had some fun Twitter exchanges .
I mentioned that I am getting ready to start working with the guys from the Fear the Boot podcast on a project to try to get people to donate RPG books and supplies to our troops so they don’t have to Improvise, Adapt and Overcome. Almost before I was finished speaking, Jim gave me his email address, saying, “...I would be glad to donate a full set of my signed books to support the troops.” This was not something I asked for or would have thought to ask for; it was something he wants to do. The rumors of Jim Butchers awesomeness have been greatly under exaggerated!
Possible facepalm coming? Or did it just not quite compute, Garrett?
Count us in! Ink and Yakoaohw aka Heather and Matt W.
Added!
Wow, we're nearly at 30 already. Looks like the party is going to expand past my initial estimate! Oh me of little faith. :D
as long as we dont get TOOO rowdy should be okay.
Yeah we'll be driving home at the end of each day. :-\ But still really looking forward to some fun.
Oh I kid of course we are all responsible adults and I am sure we will behave. NYCC was my first chance to meet most of these folks and the energy was great I am sure this will be more of the same but with even MORE new friends :):D :DYou're welcome. ;D
Hmm... toying with the idea of hopping in the car and cruising down myself, if PG decides not to go. I take at least one or two long roadtrips by myself every year. Could be fun <ponder ponder ponder>Tell Jerry I owe him a beer. I never had one with him in New York then, when he's pondering that, bonk him on the noggin and haul him down!
Also, it will depend if I get a new job by then, if I can get that Friday off. :)
Tell Jerry I owe him a beer. I never had one with him in New York then, when he's pondering that, bonk him on the noggin and haul him down!
I'll try that!
For that matter, Jerry was Displeased With Me when I told him I couldn't have a beer with him at the fan dinner because I had to drive everyone back home. I need to make that up.thats 2 FREE beers did I say FREE by the Bro code Jerry's committed .
He just looks reeeaaallly confused.good.....it's working!
If you are waiting for the opportune moment... now would be it.POTC FTW!!

For the record... he's WAAAYY bigger than me! :ohence the Bonking! I met him he's a big fellow sure, but there is beer , companionship and the hitherto mentioned Bonking on your side.
Iiii'mmm not gonna say anything. :-X
Must I note for the record the number of people here who would stow easilly in all overhead storage compartments with just a little bit of folding?but but but... I offer beer and nary i say it snacks!
Little Debby is my master.But...what about Fudge Rounds? Those are teh awesome.

Thank you. This whole "Teh Snackety Seduction Of Teh Paynesgrey" was getting me a little spooked.I only did what I did because I was very sad I hadn't gotten the chance to know you better. I meant it all in a spirit of fun and I will be very glad to see you again and hopefully break bread.
Anyway, Elise and I will obviously be there or I'll clearly be hunted down like a dog and dragged kicking and screaming.
Folks, let's try to pretend we're attempting to stay near-ish a topic-like area. :D
Okay. Planning on going, even if only for the day of the fan dinner. Being smart and putting a marker post here and actually, you know, paying attention this time...

I'm going to MarsCon, I'm going to MarsCon! I'm doing a little dance, and it goes like this: enhe hehnn ehen nenhe neheehn;D ;D
Because I despise PayPal and everything it stands for, I will be getting my tickets by mail. But I will get them! Oh yes, I will get them.
The horde increaseth mightily.have we a plan for conquest ? or at least cocktails I'll spare a village for a cocktail ;D
Don't get Rob started, he already said he wants people to do Time Warp if there's anytime that everyone's together for karaoke. Yeah, dunno if I spelled that right or not.
I thought about you guys last night while I was out catching owls. One of the guys had an owl in photographer grip (holding its feet) and was moving his hand around so it looked like the owl was dancing, and he was singing Time Warp while he did it. :DTime Warp makes everything better. I expect that at some point in my best ,which is Poor, Riff Raff Impression say "It's astounding .." I expect things will take off from there ;D
Added!
Thanks! That's me + VandalGryphon, btw. He will have read ALL the books by then, dammit.
hmmm...*ponders horde*
Could we call it a "team," maybe? It's still a horde but people seem to be okay with cheering on a horde that's called a "team."
Added!
Could we be a scrum? A host? A legion? A multitude? A swarm? A drove? A thronging concourse?
I like "horde."

I'll be at the dinner if there's room. Dunno who that Jim guy is, though. Hope he doesn't spend the whole time yakking.
Also, I'd like to put forward "scourge". O:>

No, just a Butcher fan. That's not how group nouns work. :D
The male of the species is known as a lunatic. The female is a loon.
Thanks for the heads up Shecky, I'd hate to use the wrong term. Never know who might be offended.I think we may have lost the topic again. I don't think I led it astray this time though :)
How's this for pretending to be on topic?
I think we may have lost the topic again. I don't think I led it astray this time though :)
Indeed, it is unfortunate that there won't be much of a snarking in Tucson this weekend. Then you sir must snark a MIGHTY snark and do us all proud!
Then you sir must snark a MIGHTY snark and do us all proud! That sounds vaguely painful.
Well yes! For I have the camera in hand. I'm just hoping that the mic is strong enough to pick everything up.From what I have seen it's the crowd noise that will get you. Try your best to get there early so you can get close. In the end just enjoy the hell out of it and if the video isn't great we won't hurt you TOO bad. We like you ;D
You know the Friday night theme is Urban Fantasy characters? Are we planning on dressing up and doing JB proud?I know many are I'm not much for costuming myself but I have a couple months to ponder it. I'm just wondering which outfit Pricellie will wear her's are always great.

I'll probably do something that won't take up too much space in my bag. Chichen Itza Molly may be too cumbersome to take on a plane. Most likely PG!Molly or Maeve.
i haven't decided if i'm goign to dress up or not. if i do it'll be molly. anything else requires effort...... ohhh i almost forgot.. maybe i can't do molly.. crap crap crap
Because Butters/Molly is creepy? I ran into that problem back when I dated Esperacchius, and we were dressed as Molly and Harry. I insisted either I take off my wig or he take off his duster before any smooching could take place. Now that he's dating Gilly, who does a fantastic Murphy, all is right in the cosplaying world. :D

The hotel is indoors, though. And wigs are glorious things!
Fixed your fixing.
What are you saying there, Cellie? ;) Harry/Murphy is totally canon now, eh? :D
So are you guys doing the talent show silly or serious?
And I'm going to be utilizing my new, way-too-expensive-not-to-wear-to-a-few-cons costume Friday, which is modeled after Alexia Tarabotti from the Parasol Protectorate series. I'm do Butcher stuff on Saturday. Are you guys dressing up for the dinner, or at all on Saturday?

Fred? As in Iago Fred?
EEE! Fred, Christie, and the n00blet are coming! I've added mom and dad to the dinner party list.Squee yay!
Yup! And his wife and their unfathomably beautiful baby girl!
<totally girly squeee>That's scary.
I'll try not to make the baby cry. :-X
I'll try not to make the baby cry. :-X
Anyone who makes the baby cry will find themselves crying in short order.I would never do anything to make that baby cry EVER. Me, You and Jim spoke of her glory. I'm more stoked to see her then anything else now! ;D
Children seem to go one of two ways with me - they find me irresistibly entertaining or they're terrified. I made a professor's son cry in college because I said "hi" to him. I'm still a little traumatized. :P
crap. me too. they either love or hate me. *sighs* i'll stay banished to the back while the tot is around.you won't be able to help yourself she will DRAW you in. Kid is Friggen cute no doubt about it.
Fred and Christie took Evie and me out for Indian food when I was in DC for the Avon Walk. Sitting in the car next to her little safety seat, I spent like 10 minutes just staring into her eyes. Most adorable, gorgeous, joyous baby ever. You mentioned that and when Fred had linked a few pic on twitter months ago I was transfixed for quite a while . So cute and full of life this con is gonna rock on so many levels now.

That's great! I was hoping he would be there and I'd get to meet him. Especially after listening to the Walking Eye interview. I was so happy when I heard on there that the DFRPG has been a financial success.
Quite Fred had mentioned it a while back. they broke even just a bit over 1 month into preorders . That Interview was great was funny to hear the 100d20 story again .

Never underestimate the power of a Holiday Inn.Oh I know the Holiday Inn will survive it's Virginia I worry about ;D
There are caves there. People can hide underground.good. good. Not as familiar with that area spent some time down south in South Boston only was in Williamsburg briefly. My fears assuaged PARTY ON!
A lot of the commercial caves are northwest of Willliamsburg by about 3 hours, actually. They'll just have to plan the evacuation ahead of time. :P
Stinkin' people with talent.
I don't have anything I could bring to a talent show, but I just read an interview with Shannon where she said she is big on beads and I have a hobby that has me occasionally visiting the bead shop so I think I will be bringing some of the products from that hobby to the dinner and passing them out to anyone who wants. It's not urban fantasy related, but it's certainly geeky in my eyes. I think I will take a picture and upload it to one of those free photo uploading sights later today.
Those are cool! And it would appear that you have a great deal of patience.
REQUEST FROM MARSCON CON STAFF - Priscillie - Could the dinner plans be moved from 7pm to 6pm. We have a charity auction at 8:30pm that we would like to have Jim and Shannon at. The charity is the Williamsburg Heritage Humane Society which helps out puppies and kitties. They even bring in several of their Cats and Dogs during the afternoon. Last year we raised over $2,500 dollars for them. We did so because David Weber auctioned off the chance to be in one of his books. He did two auctions and raised close to $1000.00. We would like Jim there to help us out.
Just for your information. At this time, we have tenatively scheduled Jim and Shannon for 2 hours on Friday, 3 hours on Saturday and 1 hour on Sunday (depending on their flight plans). So you should have plenty of time to spend with them.
Butch
Gail and I will be there! Hook us up! (( yeah, list me as H2, or they won't know who I am *g* ))
No problem whatsoever! Anything to better accommodate a worthy cause. :D I've called the restaurant and changed our reservation to 6pm. Thanks for keeping me updated!Puppies and kitties? Bring your checkbooks folks let's get together and see they BEAT last years $2500 !
I need some help y'all. Hubby is really getting into going to Con and I guess we're showing up as Michael and Charity. The only problem is that if my friend's chain mail doesn't fit I'm kind of short on ideas as how I'm gonna dress.
Any ideas? Please PM them to me. Thanks.
Blonde wig, broadsword and mace. I think that would be sufficient.
Thank you captain obvious. I kid. No I have that much of an idea, it's a bit more the clothes I'm stuck on. I mean is it really dressing up as a character if I just wear my jeans and long sleeve tee? That's pretty much what I wear everyday.
And I would love to walk around with my Brother-in-law's claymore...I don't think the constaff/security/police will look too kindly on that.
Charity took an arming jacket from the first tub. It wasn’t some beat-up old relic, either. It was a neat, quilted garment, heavy black cotton over the quilting, which was backed by what looked a lot like Kevlar ballistic fabric. She pulled it on, belted it into place, and then withdrew an honest-to-God coat of mail from the tub. She slipped into it and fastened half a dozen clasps with the swift assurance of long practice. A heavy sword belt came next, securing the mail coat. Then she pulled on a tight-fitting cap made in the same manner as the jacket, tucking her braided hair up into it, and then slipped a ridged steel helmet onto her head.
She opened the second tub and drew out a straight sword with a cruciform hilt. The weapon was only slightly more slender and shorter than Michael’s blessed blade, but after she inspected the blade for notches or rust, she flicked it around a few times as lightly as she would a rolled-up newspaper, then slid the weapon into the sheath on the sword belt. She tucked a pair of heavy chain gloves through the belt. Finally, she took a hammer from the big tub. It had a steel-bound handle about four feet long, and mounted a head almost as large as a sledgehammer’s, backed by a wicked-looking spike.
Are you worried that your hands are registered weapons, whingnut?
No Dear my mouth is. Ask Star she will confirm.
Hush you!
ohhhhh the agony.. must.. chew.. tongue... :D
Oh, just say it. ;D

Wow, I leave for an hour or so and people start biting other peoples' tongues.
Wow, I leave for an hour or so and people start biting other peoples' tongues.
It makes me feel kind of left out.
The con might have a no biting policy.
you'll meet me there I promise I'll let you bite my tongue if it makes you feel better. Really no reaso I should be able to speak the second time I meet Jim either ;D

oooooooh... pickles, tomato juice... it's gonna be a good weekend.
oh yeah. good company too. :D
*forcibly re-rails the thread*
No pickles, alas. I realized they'd have to travel with me on an airplane. I don't want them fondled by the TSA.
oh I beg to differ! Rachel and I are driving and they do mail order ;D
I don't think I've ever been to NYC in a situation where I was free to visit what I wanted. I've only ever been there on band trips back in high school. (My main memory is standing outside Carnegie Hall in the rain).I have lived no more then an hour away my whole life , but never found much reason to visit .
we may well have to take the train in sometime soonish. we really enjoyed Manhattan when we went to comic con.

Let us know if/when you do! There must be chillage. It could be no other way! ;D

Well baked goods are an effective healing method ;D
we may well have to take the train in sometime soonish. we really enjoyed Manhattan when we went to comic con.I have been asked if we had any plans this weekend. I don't know if that means anything. I was promised whales this past weekend, and I didn't get to see whales.

Bah. Sue and I will be in SC that weekend.
I do owe her whales but I'm thinking Thanksgiving weekend in NYC could be a wee bit much. Thoughts? How do you get Thanksgiving weekend out of this weekend?
and are totally stopping by here on their way through... RIGHT?
I don't think we have enough pull to get the plane to stop by your town.
make it happen man
I have been asked if we had any plans this weekend. I don't know if that means anything. I was promised whales this past weekend, and I didn't get to see whales.
Whale watch? I was on one out of Massachusetts once and we saw whales all over the place. I think I was just lucky enough to hit it on a really good day, though. That would be totally awesome, but no. Just going to the Mystic Aquarium--they have beluga whales.
That would be totally awesome, but no. Just going to the Mystic Aquarium--they have beluga whales.
I only plot in silence. I am willing to scheme openly, however.
They're auctioning off Jim and Shannon?! :o
:P
No, Jim and Shannon will be buying the fan of their choice to ritually sacrifice and serve to the Dark Pooch, Frost.
...And after Frost is done with these willing sacrifices, the leftovers get shipped to the Boy, right?

He meant Jim and Shannon's son, J.J., who's in his first year at college. Shannon used to hijack grocery-store supply 18-wheelers to feed him.I missed the subtext there silly me.
I missed the subtext there silly me.
No real subtext, just a case of happening to have been in on the Twitter fun a while back. She's a funny lady.Oh I follow Shannon ,even banter with her now and again. I adore her and I think I'm MORE jazzed to meet her then I was to meet Jim. He's great and all but been there done that ya know? :)

lol, my brother and I used to go through a loaf of bread a day just for lunch PB&J sandwiches when we were that age.
She's awesometastic. And they're a great couple - after 15+ years of marriage, the first time I saw them, they were holding hands.
Sue's brother was like that. He'd get home from school, eat a large pizza, have dinner with the fam and then have another pizza. He was literally growing overnight; in the morning, he'd usually run down the stairs to the kitchen for breakfast, and one day, out of the blue, he clocked himself on an overhang.
...I sit on my butt for most of the day. On a hard slab. :DDude get a cushion every piano player I have know had one.
Pfft. I've always had the metabolism of stone. A number of years ago, in the middle of losing 50 lbs but hitting a longish plateau, I decided to get detailed and measure exactly what I was taking in. 1200 calories per day. And not losing an ounce.
My metabolism has dropped further with a desk job. As a teacher, I was at least standing and moving around all the time (which is part of why I'm uncomfortable with sitting for extended periods).
...I sit on my butt for most of the day. On a hard slab. :D
Dude get a cushion every piano player I have know had one.
oh. god. shecky. taught. *cowers in fear*
I don't have the hands to carry around a bloody cushion from piano to piano. I'll deal.
Inflatable donut ME... inflatable donut.
Is there room at the dinner for three more?
My mental image of Shecky teaching is based on a professor I student-aided for when I was in 7th grade. When the kids were the most focused and quiet, be it on a lab assignment or an exam, he would shout, "YES, I LOVE THIS CLASS!" All the students feared and adored him. :D
... I'm not quite sure what to make of this...
Absolutely! What names should I put on the list?
Elaine and Dennis Young and Josh Burns
We were at the NYC dinner.
What age/subject did you teach, Shecky?
College and high school French. High school writing and drama.
Edited again: +1 the guy that intro'd me to the series just walked up to my desk and he says he's in.
splains so much. :D

Go to the office.I seem to remember taking a pic at the fan dinner that looked pretty much like this exchange.

They charging to attend this dinner like the last one?
It certainly can't be free.
And having been at the last one well worth EVERY penny. Great venue. Great Food and Priscilla did an amazing job setting it up. Which it should be noted she did for free, Just like this one.
Hell, I paid for my ticket to the NYCC fan dinner, too. :D
Hell, I paid for my ticket to the NYCC fan dinner, too. :D
Added!
I'm gonna add a possible 2 others... they want to attend the con, but I don't know if they'll be able to make it, so I'd rather slot them a space, then have those two available for a possible 'waiting list' if they don't make it. If that's okay by you. =)
(( btw, 'cellie - you totally rock for pulling these things together *g* ))
Would you please add one more for me--Anne Henderson. Thanks so much. :)
This is a family-style restaurant, so we'll be ordering a bunch of platters of food for everyone to dig into. Everyone will pay for their share of the food, plus whatever drinks they order. Very civilized. :D
Add me, too!
Heartsonycgr ;D
It certainly can't be free.
I meant to actually show up, like that 150 dollar fee (or whatever it was) to come to the NYCC fan dinner.
I can afford to pay for dinner, but not to shovel out that kind of major cash...
You can check out Sal's menu (http://salsbyvictor.net/menu.html) for an idea of how much you should expect to pay at the MarsCon Fan Dinner. It's a local Italian place. You're not going to break the bank. :D
Thanks for posting the Sal's menu as well. VERY reasonably priced with a good variety this is going to be so fun.
*looks*
*makes note to save up for food money*
Heh. Don't want to see what you call unreasonable. Or just plain reasonable, for that matter.
Dude you got SOOOOO much backup on this trip you'll be fine. Compared to a great many places that is reasonable very much so.

Ah. Much more reasonable. And free refill drinks. I can swing dinner for $12. Shiny.
Split a pizza with someone and it's half that. Speaking of which, anyone want to split a white pizza? And NOBODY is going to go without because of impecuniosity. We won't permit it.as I said Garrett between us all you are covered if need be.
Plus, remember 'Cellie has been bombarded with NYC prices for a couple of years now.

If there's still room for me, it looks like I can get the time off work and I'll throw in what I can for gas if you'll let me ride with you, Starbeam and whingnut. Put me on the list. :)
Okay... but why?
YAY! Added!
Because planning what you're going to eat two months ahead of time is a bit silly? :D

nah. i generally have to do things like that. food allergies suck.
That, too. I was already planning to call Sal's to ask about onions and 'shrooms. Figure might as well do it while I'm thinking about it.
ask about spicies? if you're callin and haven't already. check to see if their tomato sauce has any red pepper flakes in it for me? i'd really hate to get sick at the dinner. (tee hee.)

I say again: But Mooooo-ooomWhy you whining? You're not even gonna be there. :-P
Is the idea behind Italian all the garlic so vamps of the Red Court can't come?
A tentative schedule should be up before or just after Thanksgiving.
A tentative schedule should be up before or just after Thanksgiving.
The Folks at Marscon follow this thread I'm sure when things are all firmed up they will post either the schedule proper or a link to it. They are REALLY good like that. I look forward to meeting you. :D
You're not keeping me away that easily.
The Hotel Staff looks forward to MarsCon every year. The owner is Pakistani and is there most of the weekend. A few years back, we asked for permission to set up a decoration in the main lobby. He enjoyed it so much that every year he is asking us what we are creating for the lobby this year. He also enjoys our Dance Troupe, so they get asked back every year. This is a smaller hotel - when it comes to the number of rooms - but when the hotel truly wants you there then it is hard to leave.
Just a quick note on the tentative schedule for Jim and Shannon. Before I post this --- THIS IS SUBJECT TO CHANGE ---- Friday: 6pm Opening Ceremonies 7pm Jim & Shannon panel (Working Title: Urban Fantasy) Saturday: 12noon - Jim's panel (reading potentially) 1pm Jim and Shannon Signing 3pm Jim Q&A. Sunday: Early morning panel (Their flight leaves around 1pm so they don't want to be late)
Now this is subject to change. Also as a favor to the MarsCon staff. For the members of this board - Please don't hog Jim and Shannon all to yourselves. Give the other fans a chance. See you at the con.
Jim usually defers readings and does Q&A's instead, saying that he assumes most people can read his books themselves, and he gets a new croud to laugh at his jokes. Personally, I love watching Q&A video's on the internet, but I really, really, really want to hear the fabled Jim Butcher reading of Bob that there seem to be no recordings of, but those that have heard report to be amaisingly laden with snark.

If there is a reading, my guess is that it will be from Ghost Story. If folks want, though, I'll ask him if he'd be open to reading a bit of Bob.
That won't be a problem. We forum folks are a respectful bunch!

I'm only a folk, I need at least a second for it to be "folks"
I made the mistake of buying a camcorder with an internal battery, so I'm going to have to order extra batteries for this con...
Nonsense. We harass our authors. Why, we're not even giving Jim and Shannon a break after...
... oh, we are? Um... whoops. I'll shut up now. :D

They exist! But I'm not sure why you would want to stalk a beagle...
Oh, so they're Woodstocker pants?
... okay, you KNOW it's a horrible pun if *I* groan at it.
I guess they'd be handy if you want to do some snooping.;D :D As much as I wanna groan, I can't. It's too funny.

Thanks, MarsCon1! Much appreciated and Caveat understood--helps me plan my leaving work a titch early on Friday to get down there for the JB-SB-DF fun.
Bob is probably in Ghost Story, eh? So we could get double the fun by having him read a passage from Ghost Story w/Bob in it! Win-Win, eh? :-*
Bob did not make an appearance in the draft of ghost story's first 4 chapters read at NYCC
*lightbulb!*Poof, there's only glitter left?
*claps hands over mouth*
*runs away*

Are you a full grown newt, or are you still in your red eft stage? :)
How you know dis? Mebbe he did, mebbe he didn't. :D
Is there any online evidence of Jim speaking with Bob the Skull's voice? I hear that it is very good.I don't think so. When I asked Jim if he would be willing to read a snippet of Bob at the dinner, he said, "Potentially." Didn't happen. Ah well.
dis how I know

Great. Now Sue doesn't want to go to the con because our airport (Newark) MIGHT put in full-body scanners. Yes, I find them loathsome and a strong indication of how our security agencies are substituting the idiocy of numbers for actual security, but it's... bah, it's getting into TT and I ain't goin' there. While I understand peoples objections to them I myself don't mind them. it's over in a second you can't see the screen and then you are on your way. As far as radiation exposure it's quite minimal unless you fly a great Deal. I hope Sue will reconsider it wouldn't be the same without you both.

YES!!! Why???
uh... what???
If I were allergic to nuts I couldn't hang out on this forum...oh, wait, you mean the food.. :P ;DI'm not nots I'm " Subject to a completely different view of reality " says so on the little laminated card they gave me at the hospital ;D
[adam savage] I reject your reality and substitute my own! [/adam savage]Just that ! Now if you can explain it to Star we can all be happy again ! :)
I came home from work today to that, among my packages from UPS, were the rest of things I needed to finish my costume. ;D
On another note, FX Warehouse - thank you ever so much for packaging everything underneath little bits of shredded newspaper. :P
Death Masks :)
You could just try reasoning with it instead of resorting to violence.
:P ;D
:D Sorry. That's like my response for when people ask "What's up?" I look up, and then say.
I always do that to people when they tell me to "hit the lights." I'm sure it was funny the first 99 times. :P
Lime lights :POh, do you use those to make Margarita lights? ::)
From an insider's point of view, here are the things you don't want to miss if you can fit them into your schedule.
Coyote Run - Excellent Celtic Rock band. They are local to Williamsburg but perform all over the East Coast and once a year they travel to Scotland, Ireland and next year England. This is one of the groups you get your dancing shoes on for. Plus you will need a couple of brews to cool down when they finish their set.
Poisoned Dwarf - They are more of your traditional Celtic Band. Great musicians. Their following has increased over the last few years and their local concerts all ways draw well.
Tom Smith & Boogie Knights - What would any SF con be like without your filkers. They will be performing 3 times throughout the weekend so you should be able to find a performance you can attend.
Treasures of the Sand - You like Dancing Girls? We got Dancing Girls! This is not just your typical Belly Dancers. They perform various Middle-Eastern dances and are an annual favorite. Especially with our Hotel Owner.
Fishnet Inc. and Rocky Horror - They perform all over the Tidewater Virginia area and help keep the legacy of Rocky alive. They also throw one hell of a Saturday Night party.
One of my Favorite Programs - SF Win, Lose or Draw. Great party game. In the days when MarsCon was a small Relax-a-con, this built our reputation as a con to attend. They would lynch me if we ever dropped this from the con schedule.
Finally, the best part of MarsCon - other than Jim and Shannon Butcher - is our con suite. You can pretty much feed yourself through-out the weekend. Yes you might go out for Pizza - wait a second the con suite if having pizza - okay you might want to go out for Coffee - wait we will have coffee, maybe even some Starbucks - well you know you'll have to buy drinks - nope! We have them all weekend long. Want hot tea, ice tea, milk (only available during Filk and Cookies), homemade cookies. We got them. For Breakfast, we will have pastries and fruit, but we will also have some ham and hard boiled eggs. At lunch time, we will have sandwiches. For dinner, we will have some hot foods. During our party we will have some great snacks. If you away hungry from MarsCon, then (A). You are a very picky eater, or (B) You have a medical issue and although we try very hard, we can't cover everything.
And don't miss the Champagne Toast at Opening Ceremonies. If you still have questions when you get to the con, just ask for Butch. Every regular knows Butch.
Sincerely,
Butch

Quake in fear, all ye Board Members.

Hey Shecky.
We got a candidate.
This thread has wandered down a strange, strange road... :DI'm trying to figure out how this is any different than normal.
Not at all really, haha.I wouldn't. :-\
I use black liquid latex in my costume, actually. I would be very surprised, however, if it is anyone's fetish.
I'm trying to figure out how this is any different than normal.
Help with research question?
If you were going to kill or repel Red Court Vampires (both offensively and defensively), what acoutrements would you carry around?
Thanks!
Super Soakers. Filled with holy water and garlic juice.
You know, Myyrdn my boy, of the three of us you're the only one who'll fit in the Gimp Suit.

Thanks, Shecky...so this stuff (garlic, holy water, etc.) is good for Rampires as well as Blampires? One place I read says sunlight is good for half Rampires fighting the Red side---but Rampires go about in the light, right...or only when they've got their human skins on?
Thanks for the help!
Aw, crud - somehow I read "Black" instead of "Red". My bad.
Oh, didn't we tell you? We stitched four together, so y'all don't have to be apart. *runs for the hills*
Shecky, if he got the visual of you and I stitched together in a super gimp suit chasing him, I'll bet he'll never quit running.

You kidding? I'll just run till I can't see you all anymore. Y'all won't be physically ABLE to chase me in the super gimp suit.
They can be burned with holy water I think. At Bianca's party, didn't Susan throw the jar of holy water at the light or something, and cook them with the holy steam?Ah...I think I remember that now, too. I'll look into that! Thanks! ;D
So you could carry the Super Soaker - and paint a big, ornate cross on the water tank or something. :D

And deep-fried?
I wonder which smites better - original recipe or extra crispy?
Kentucky Fried Shuriken - Finger Lickin' Death.
Red. ;D

Got it. A basket of Rampire killing goodies it is. And, if I get hungry, thirsty or need a prayer I'm covered ;) Thanks, Serak! ;D
OK, then we'll have to declare a truce for MarsCon...deal?
The basket itself was a part of her Little Red Riding Hood costume
Is MarsCon accorded neutral ground?
I can't wait toeatmeet everyone. :)
Whew! Glad you reminded me... I was puzzling how to look tough and deadly to Rampires while carrying a BASKET....now I don't have to...nanny nanny boo boo Rampires.
Of course, I could go as Susan wearing a Red Riding Hood outfit.....nah...that's just too weird for words.
Weren't some of you people supposed to be WORKING today???
LMAO!!!!
Weren't some of you people supposed to be WORKING today???I post while working. Puzzles aren't all that difficult to do. Except when I get stuck. Then I post cause I'm stuck and usually get the answer when I go back to the puzzle.
LMAO!!!!
All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.
The corollary to this is:
All play and no pay makes Jack a homeless boy.
Someone in Changes said that(click to show/hide)
Indeed they can, as seen here.
Shecky,
Perfect. Thanks for the tip. I have a lot of stuff but this is ideal, so I bought it... :o
Not only that, he battles against the forces of evil to protect us.
Thanks, Serack (oops forgive me I'm rather lysdexic with names)! Yet another great idea! I see a new career in your future...Con costume consultant. Now off and looking for authentic looking water pistols, AK47s, Sigs etc!
I've always been creative with designing stuff like that, it's coming up with the initial idea that's usually the tough part for me, and you got that. Also, I've failed miserably at the actual drawing of stuff. Currently I'm making a replica of Harry's staff for the Con (http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,22935.0.html), and I'm sticking with straight lines for the runes.
Damn I am so boringly logically analytical even about a fantasy party costume! >:( 8)
Damn I am so boringly logically analytical even about a fantasy party costume!
But wigs are the best part!
Heh. I went to NYCC and the fan dinner as Ebenezar... because I'm short, stumpy and bearded. Could've gone as Billy but didn't want to shave the beard. Plus, Eb gets to carry around a big stick and has an excuse to wear overalls. :D
That's how I plan too. :D I look for characters that have similar eye and hair color to me so I don't have to worry about wigs or contacts.
I feel better...I guess being geeks and nerds that makes a lot of sense. Sadly, I have age to also factor into this equation, but there really aren't any older female characters, except ancient Mai, :-\ and Asian, wizened, teeny and frail I am not ;) ;D Guess I could have gone as a generic White Council member, but then I'd have to buy a grey cloak... ::)Robe, I'd think. Grey cloaks are for Wardens.
That's how I plan too. :D I look for characters that have similar eye and hair color to me so I don't have to worry about wigs or contacts.
I like seeing other peoples' wig work. I'll admit to never really trying it because I feel I have a weird shaped head, as most things I attempt to put on it fall off.
Robe, I'd think. Grey cloaks are for Wardens.

You know you love it.
You just like putting girly wigs on menfolk.
Thank goodness the bowler protects me.
One word: absinthe.
You'll get that wig on him, oh yes.
I will find a way.2 words Cellie Staple Gun.
2 words Cellie Staple Gun.
2 words, Rob: Staple Remover. Alternately: Hammer Claw.okay I got some adhesive from work that takes seconds to dry and will lift a truck once it's set up. That should git'r done. :)
Does anyone know where I can buy goat pupil contacts? Extra points if they can be prescription. ;D
On a related note, are there any other characters that would let me keep my goatee?
Thanks, I'll check.
As far as my goatee, at 4-5 inches long (from the bottom of my chin). Its more like evil me turned to good me and said 'sh*t, now we have to deal with barbarian us!'. Although, I suppose I could always just bring an ax...
Of course then you'd usurp Sanya as Gimli
(ooooh, low blow, low blow. *snicker*)
Dibbs on Treebeard. He's more my style, and I don't fancy the looks the dwarves keep throwing that chick from Hanson that plays Legolas.
That is the hottest chick in the flick.

I'm not lettin Pris come near me with a wig whilst you 2 are around.

My son wants to dress as Nicodemus (he's 17). Any suggestions?Only really specific thing I can think of is the noose.
Only really specific thing I can think of is the noose.
Yeah that's the easy part. I just have to rigit so he can't accidentally strangle himself. :O
My son wants to dress as Nicodemus (he's 17). Any suggestions?
I seem to recall a black on black suit from Death Masks, but that could be my memory playing with me. And yeah, I didn't mention the shadow cause I don't think there's really too much that can be done with that.
Therapy.
Therapy.
Therapy.I'm never gonna learn not to read this at work. I <3 ya'll. ;D

I can't even begin to keep up...I am totally in awe with your collective talents... :o ;D
Why yes, we do collect. Please deposit another 50¢ to continue your call. ;D
I'll deposit when I get to MarsCon. Be sure to put up a jar....we can donate it to the puppies and kitties!Ohh...I like this idea.
;D
And the bats. :)
Well, this is in VA --> Virginia big eared bats. Although I think they're all in the northern/western parts of the state rather than near Williamsburg.
Shall I bring a few down with me? ;)
Yeah, no bats needed. If anyone gets out of line we should have plenty of Wizard staffs lying around... ;DI mean no bats other than Chiro and other MarsCon attendees, of course... ::)
Yeah, no bats needed. If anyone gets out of line we should have plenty of Wizard staffs lying around...
Why is that bat biting your finger (or whoever's)?she is a woman of excellent taste, evidenced by the afore mentioned bat nommage .
Don't make enforcer bat have to rough ya's up.
Na na na na na na na na - bat dog!Chiro, I find it fairly reassuring that I wasn't the only person who went there with that... :)

What a cute little bat Chiro! Aww!
And that bat-dog is fierce! :D
Hmmm, for some reason I picture Nick in a White suit with a black shirt, or maybe some small black stripes. This guy fits the look pretty well. (unfortunately, in my mind's eye it's a very nice suit)Thanks! ;D

As for a representation of his shadow, the best I'd be able to come up with for a costume is some version of a Mistborn cloak.
If your not familiar with Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn series, here's a pretty good drawing of his main character wearing a Mistborn cloak.
http://fc03.deviantart.net/fs46/f/2009/165/1/9/Mistborn__Vin_character_design_by_kaikonen.jpg
It might be better to forgoe the shadow all together though, but if you can get ahold of a cheap black silky (in my minds eye silky or maybe satiny is the most important detail) long flowing capelike thingy and shread it, that might work.
maybe some ozzy specs like these to cap it off.

Make it out of a weak leather thong. $5 at walmart for a spool.
P.S. and if you are worried about it cinching before it breaks somehow, tie a stopper knot on the line that slides through the rest of the knot. I'll take a picture of what I have in mind when I get home. I have the thong and everything.
Methinks its time to start trolling the thrift shops
Well, every time he walks past they go "thrrrrfffft!" at him.
Thrift stores are so full of good will.
Thrift stores are so full of good will.
Chiana, may I point out bat is biting finger and bat dog is a Golden Retriever...may want to reverse those characterizations. Fierce Golden. ROTFL Hee hee hee. :) ;D
What's a Jim dinner with out Harry and Murphy?
Mrs. Serack will be studying heavily for exams so she won't be able to make it. You can change my entry to Serack and Electrical Butters. (the +1)
Just so they don't try to set me on fire and shoot me. :PNo promises but I will ask them to behave best they can.
Harry and Murphy, and there's going to be a Susan. If Michael shows up, I don't stand a chance! :o
I come in peace. My people have simply been misrepresented. We just want hugs.I'll give you a hug, but if I even think something is gonna happen I let Harry and Murphy loose. just a FYI ;D
Maybe someone will come as Martin, too! (?that bland guy who used to followed Susan around....(click to show/hide)
Chiro, you gotta start recruiting some peeps of the Rampire variety to protect you!
;D :o
The rampire strikes back:D
:D
People don't like hugs with teeth? So that's what I've been doing wrong all this time...
you and me both.

Uh, WHAT? as Harry would say...
It's true. We love rainbows and cuddling and really just want worldHow about marshmallowy, chocolatey candy?dominationpeace.
Then it is good that I plan on bringing homemade candy with me. Two kinds, possibly. If she falls asleep on the drive down don't count on getting candy, just saying ;D
How about marshmallowy, chocolatey candy?
Hmmm...I should look and see if I can find any nutella recipes, huh?
*peeks at the sugary stuff* Uh-oh... there's nutella in here... *backs off* Ware.
The fan dinner will be Saturday night at 5:30 at Sal's. RSVP in this thread to be included in the fun!
What do you have against Nutella...just chocolate, hazelnuts, sugar. Yummmmmm. ;D
No, no, just back away. Like, NOW. *barely ducks in time as pris swoops in and snatches the nutella*
Ahhhhh. I get it. Good to know. Thanks for the warning! Same thing w/me and sushi.

Puppy dog! Aww!
Do you show your dogs, Hearts?
Shecky , Myyrdn & Chiro: Thanks for the nice words...uplifting! Meth lab had me ROTFL, Shecky! Nice departure from working with irritable cats all day (as in herding cats...you know the drill). ;D
*narrows eyes*
My cat refuses to be herded.
Exactly...most of them do. Thus, a job that requires herding cats is a very tough job. That's why I like to come home to biddable, sweet, adoring, dumb Golden Retrievers....pure love with fur!
I herd Miss Demeanor Underfoot and Princess Clawdia.
They said "Mrowrrwow. Mrow. Murr."
Hi, Pris,
Can you add +1 (Lauraileen) to the Fan Dinner--a friend of mine who's just started getting into DF (about halfway through the books)...has booked a room and wants to come to the Fan Dinner. Thanks!
You have secret weapon?
Mousse and squirrel for hair.
You have secret weapon?
Some defensive, some offensive
So some of your weapons get uppity about everything you say, and the rest are rude? ;D
Bats and dogs, living together....
MASS HYSTERIA!!!!
Not to mention without the benefit of matrimony....egad! Dogs would just consider the bats food--tasty winged morsels.
Greebo is a fictional character in Terry Pratchett's Discworld books. He is first introduced in Wyrd Sisters. He is a foul-tempered one-eyed grey tomcat whose human, Nanny Ogg, insists against all the evidence that he is a sweet, harmless kitten. In the course of the books, he has killed two vampires, eating at least one of them in the novel Witches Abroad:QuoteThe bat squirmed under his claw. It seemed to Greebo's small cat brain that it was trying to change its shape, and he wasn't having any of that from a mouse with wings on.
The hotel allows dogs (unless they have changed their policy). They have to be on a lease when in the public and you have to pay a fee. I would call the hotel to verify this. The hotel will be full of animals on Saturday as the local Heritage Humane Society will be bringing in several of their animals to show.
That made me think of the scene in The Three Amigos where they're eating the bat. :D
Oh, crap.
Will ONCE AGAIN need to remind PG that we have four cats, a dog, and a tiny house... and WE WILL NOT BE BRINGING ANY MORE HOME!!!!
Although we do give generously for donations. :D
I have about 20 lbs of cats
That is one of my cats by himself! The others come out to a total of 32 lbs between the three. :D
I think you need a bat house. ;)
I bet my cats could beat up your cats! :P ;D My four total about 52 lbs.
But you don't have Hateloaf. 20 odd pounds of dim but feisty anger.
I probably do...my neighbor has one. I'll be you have a bunch..Not at the moment; I don't have much place to put one. I'd like to make my own at some point, though. I love the idea of putting up bat houses, but you need the space to have something at least two feet tall and twelve feet off the ground. Bats are so picky. :P
But you don't have Hateloaf. 20 odd pounds of dim but feisty anger.
Or Love at First Bite.

Old style Mac and Cheese?
Um... no reason, but um... where do you live? Be exact as you can please.Come to NYC and I am sure they will hip you to the restaurant (Fred's by the way) just as they did Starbeam and I. Real nice folks Shecky,Sue,Priscellie but you will find that out for yourself soon enough. Before you ask NO I'm not going to bring you a doggy bag ;D
*whistles nonchalantly*
High-style M&C. Awesome stuff made with Black Diamond cheddar and finished in the oven with a wee bit of crisping of parmesan on top.Yum. I like the country but the restaurant choices are very limited. Can you believe they don't even have an Italian Deli w/in 50 miles! Sheez. On the other hand, when I go into the bank I never get asked for ID ;) Small towns do have their advantages!

Excited but nervous. Have never been to a "Con"...did go to a Star Trek Convention in 1972 in Baltimore...met Sulu & Chekov...but that was before many of you were born ::). Never done RPG on line or in person. Never dressed up as character in book. Lordy, lordy, lordy, WHAT have I been doing with my life until now????? Wasting it away, clearly! ;D ::)

That counts. And from the description, this one's relatively small. If it makes you feel any better, this is the first time Whingnut's gonna be dressed up in costume, too. (after repeatedly saying it's not something he'd do.) :D
My first con too. My nerdlyness always went in other directions.
Having an idea what you're doing is highly overrated. :P
Having an idea what you're doing is highly overrated. :P
One of the best parts of GDC was watching a plus sized woman win best costume as Vivi (FF:IX) by quite a margin over the slutty costumes.
I noted a question about our weapons policy - No realistic looking modern weapons i.e. guns etc. without them being checked by the con staff/security. If we feel comfortable then we will identify it as being okay. As for swords, they must peace bonded and if you are seen pulling the sword in a public area we reserve the right to ask you to leave the con. Probably won't do that, but we reserve the right.
Thanks :)
The only remaining question is how do we peace-bind your fangs? J/k :P
Or you can just duct tape my mouth shut.my but that is tempting ;D

And you haven't even met me yet. :Pthat is just the power of you ;D

hmmmm at least you don't have half a dozen people trying to figure out what you sound like. :D right now.. i sound about the same as i did at the con.
Thanks :)

Priscillie, I have a late entry for the dinner Trek +2. Thanks :)
Would anyone object if made a whole bunch of chocolate chip cookies?I highly doubt it. I'm making 2 kinds of candy. Planning to, anyway.
I highly doubt it. I'm making 2 kinds of candy. Planning to, anyway.
i don't know if i'll be able to make anything like i wanted to. it really depends if i can get caught up at work or not.I think you'll be allowed a pass.
I would bring something, but I can't cook. :PThat's why I'm making this candy. Easy to do, and I've done it before so I know that even not getting it quite right, it'll still be okay.
Yes, my cooking skills don't reach far beyond stewing in a big pot and grilling. I still have nightmares about the time I tried to make garlic mashed potatoes.Well, yes it seems perfectly reasonable to me that you would indeed have nightmares about *garlic* mashed potatoes!

That's kinda right up there with "Wooden Stake salad" or "Avocado dip with holy wafers" or such like... :)

I know I know easy joke but I had to do it ;D
Excuse me while I "waaaaaaaah!" a moment.
Gryph will make an excellent Michael. I, however, am a 5'4" redhead. While I am probably built like Charity, there is no way I can grow 8 inches before MarsCon...I was thinking maybe Bianca? Or possibly, um, Lea? I am stumped on this one...anyone want to profer suggestions?

Yeeeeaaaaaah. About that... I am NOT pulling out them wig pics again.

Guess that leaves me with The-Short-End-of-the-Stick-ius.
I once injured myself with an orange peeler. I'm too accident prone to handle edge weapons. :DMy skills with sharp implements include cooking knives and grooming shears. There is a reason I didn't become a surgeon...just a lowly internist where they keep sharp scalpels away from us... ::) :)
A sword would be handy for mist-netting, to hack down all the errant vegetation around the net. We always joked that we were going to get a machete.
Bushaxe
Does the bird talk? We have a starling at the nature center that has learned to talk. I love playing with that bird.
I paid through Paypal, but should we be expecting anything to confirm that we're ticketholders besides the Paypal confirmation? An email, something in the snail mail? Smoke signals, a good old fashioned secret handshake?
keep in mind I'm first generation American Italian and you don't want the Malocchio directed at you, do you?I know that's either the Evil Eye or fancy coffee - so it depends. :P
Question: When to costume up for the Urban Fantasy Party?
A lot of people will likely be in costume the entire day. You could always bring your costume and ask anyone staying there if you could stash it in their room until the party.
as long as you're not creepy i'm okay with you stashing it in my room.. except i probably will be getting there JUST in time to quick change and head down. wonder if mollz would go normalish when she's depressed... cause.. i'm normally lookin now. *cries*
as long as you're not creepy i'm okay with you stashing it in my room..
Yeah, my Friday night costume is not from the Dresdenverse.... my Saturday costume will be. People if you need a place to change, let PG and I know.... we'll have room! And we promise not to peak (much!) :Doh you will peek I have no doubt ;D
So are some people dressing up Saturday too? Hmm..I could wear my costume both days, but I doubt I will wear it for the dinner Saturday, but I am sure many will be in costume both days yes.
I'll have to think about that. Although I think I'll pass on wearing my Friday night costume around all day Saturday. I'll be lucky to get through one night without tripping over it and falling on my face. :D
As Susan, will you be wearing black leather pants? ;DNOPE. You do NOT want to see me in black leather pants. :o I will be channeling another time period in
Pictures people! Remeber those sad little zombies out there who can't go.......Oh, there will be plenty.
Oh, there will be plenty.
yes, lots of sad little zombies. oh. wait. :D yes lots of pictures. between me and rachel there should be a bunch.Oh, just a few. ;D
Oh, just a few. ;Dand video as well but that's sekret ;D
Yes, if I took video someone else should have to as well!Going to try to get the panels it's a brand new cam barely used it yet so footage may be poor. I'll do my best to get it up and running.
So you get 1 month and 13 days to get it posted. That's how much time you gave me :PIt'll be on my laptop before the day is done, and depending on everything else, possibly uploaded, at least somewhere, before the end of the weekend.
I thought I had asked to be reserved a spot for the fan dinner, but must have forgot to do so. Too much working on my writing November to December.
Anyway, hope to meet many of you at Marscon. I am the other author with Shannon on the Putting the Speculative in Romance panel on Saturday. I write as myself Pamela K. Kinney and under the pseudonym, Sapphire Phelan for paranormal romance and erotic urban fantasy.
As for dressing up, did plenty of costuming in my day and even done an urban fantasy vamp for couple years. Not sure if and will for this con. Dresing as any of my characters from urban fantasies of mine--nope, not the right body size and even age for some. ::)
Was going to get my husband (who is con security head) as Dresdan, but money been going to alot of other stuff. We shall see. Two weeks is not a good enough time to make costumes and do the staff. :-\

Yeah, I'd recommend bringing your own books.
Serack, there were those at the NYCC who had Jim sign their Nooks and other E-books. :) PG and I happened to get a book and one of Priscillie's maps signed by both of 'em. yay!

Jim signed the back of my Sony Reader and took up about half the available space. So what was the next thing I did? Bought a cover so nobody would ever just happen to see the signature while in public, thereby denying myself possible gloating. Yes, that's right, I'm an idjit.

Snow on Saturday & rain on Sunday. But the con will go on. You make it, we will be there!!
The hotel has a pool...
water? uh. uh. kittens don't like water.but they DO like Munchkins ;D
The hotel has a pool...
It's been awhile since I've gone swimming willingly.I don't recall EVER swimming willingly . I've got this whole drowning thing going on.
I fell in the river several times while setting up mist nets. That missed the fun mark by a wide margin.fell off a boat in shark infested waters once funny thing I can't swim long story maybe I'll tell it to you by the pool just for the Irony ;D
Funny story.... ;Dit's just my life my boy. when I say funny I most often mean tragic but amusing in hindsight. ;D
Jeez. Am I the only one here who LIKES swimming? Don't worry; I'm not cruel enough to show up in a bathing suit. That'd be just plain mean to anyone with eyes.
Huh. Guess you'll miss the absolute fun of bodysurfing.
As in the girl wearing the fireman's coat was shot in the thigh by a Red Court lackey, and she may have gotten swiped by a few bloody claws along the way, though the kevlar and chain mail lining installed by her mother prevented said claws from reaching her flesh. :Dyeah about that bloody. ;D
A question for the con:I am also interested in trying a new beer or 2 or 3 or well you get the idea. Please bring some along if you feel inclined :)
I am an amature brewer who is always looking for newsubjectstasters; would anyone be interested in trying some Oatmeal Stout or Blueberry Oatmeal Stout? They were bottled in mid December.
A question for the con:

I don't imbibe, but Mike (the +1 beside my name) brews his own and everyone who has had it really likes it so I'm betting he will be willing to bring some if there is an appropriate venue for someone to byob.

Awsome! I'll bring 2-3 cases then.
I'll try anything once. Maybe you can cure me of being exclusively a wine drinker. :PDid you mean to say "blood" drinker? ;) ;D
Did you mean to say "blood" drinker?
I am planning plans. Goooood plans. Plans that will make fans do happy dances, then promptly lapse into a diabetic coma.
Plaaaaaaaaaannnssssssssss.
I just got an image of you fondling a ring. That image is probably not too far off. Though I'd put it more to the Mr. Burns finger steepling thingie. Mainly cause I've actually seen her do that.

Do these plans involve big vats of Nutella?
Yes. Rob is renting a limo with a pool, and we are filling it with Nutella. Then Nathan Fillion and the Old Spice Guy will join me and we can goof off and paint silly things on each other's faces with Nutella, and Nathan and I can talk about nerdy stuff, and the Old Spice Guy can read the phone book, and the phone book will turn into diamonds, and then I will wake up.

Nutella pools are breeding grounds for bacteria.one of the reasons we have the Old Spice guy.... he kills bacteria.
Nutella pools are breeding grounds for bacteria.
I've never had it either. It sounds like it would be good on icecream.

Priscellie, will you be signing Your Story and/or Our World at MarsCon?Certainly hope so, whingnut's already said he's getting her to sign his copies.

Priscellie, will you be signing Your Story and/or Our World at MarsCon?
I suppose so! I'd feel more comfortable signing next to my Gruffs illustration, but I guess I can sign next to "secret weapon" for those who prefer that. How bout both? In my case I was hoping you'd sign ABOVE Jim 'cuz well.... He he.
I have officially decided. Everyone on this site is totally WEIRD!! You will fit in perfectly at MarsCon. By the way I want to try some of the home brew! There's an option other than weird? This is possible?

Weird is a prerequisite for this forum. But it has been explained to me that creepy is a no no. ;D ::)creepy is okay OVERTLY creepy BIG no no. Heck I'm sorta creepy but in a non threatening way and that's the key.
What about "spooky" or "freaky?"

The absinthe is purchased, my friends. And it seems to be pretty good stuff, too! MWUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Also, Chiro, I don't know about anyone other cat people on the board, but that is just horrifying. BLEAH!!! :P
It was a long dead cat. We basically had a "skeleton in a box" thing to use for learning the bones. The vertebrae were all strung together on twine so they would stay on order - we naturally couldn't resist hanging it around our necks. Anatomy labs are a weird habitat.
Heh, I remember people in college bringing absinthe back from trips to the Czech Republic. I never tried any, though.
Esperacchius, you and Gilly are going to be there with us this weekend, right?I certainly hope so, cause they're picking up stuff for Priscellie, and we're going through Staten Island to pick them up. Today feels weird cause yesterday was no work cause of snow, and tomorrow's no work cause driving and con.

So this would be today's productivity?Normally, yes, except I've got puzzles that have to be testsolved today so the book can get fixed to get sent to the printer.
I hauled my maps and Warden cloak to work, so I could take them to Matt's tonight. Is it bad that I want to wear my cloak around the office?Bad? Not at all. If I had one, I'd be wearing it.
And I HATE black licorice.
Is it bad that I want to wear my cloak around the office?
And when somebody asks you about it, the appropriate response is a confused expression and "What cloak?"
But, but...black licorice is awesome.
So I should go easy on the Twizzlers on the trip down if I want to make good time.Yep! :) Unless you go with the red kind...I LIKE the red kind... ;D
Can't wait. I am SO ready for the con. Though I give no promises about being in any state to be all perky and happy when I get there. This week has been hellish.
we don't to give the ebellya plague to the whole con. :(
You have to call Ralph every once in awhile, just to check in. :P
Just be careful he doesn't bring his buddies Burt and Earl, or that he doesn't go to Europe with his boots on.
Brooke and I have to cancel I'm afraid. I'm just now feeling human again, not even sure I'll be fit to travel that long by tomorrow myself... and she's now been hit by the stomach virus. Doubtful she'd be fit to travel by tomorrow, and we don't to give the ebellya plague to the whole con. :(
Unless it was a biologist's coffee mug. They would just wonder who washed their mug.

ATTENTION, FAN DINNER GUESTS:
We will be congregating in the front lobby around 4:45 Saturday evening so we can determine who needs a ride to Sal's and who has extra room. Then we'll start caravanning over.
Sal's accommodates 300 people, so if you didn't RSVP, they should have no problem seating you.
:D I have to admit, I'm guilty of the gross biologist mug at times. I've known an awful lot of us who, for some reason, just don't wash coffee mugs. By the end of a month you don't actually have to brew coffee; you just pour hot water into the mug and get instant coffee.
Noey, Matt, Gilly, Rob and I are here, and I haven't slept for over 24 hours. Whhhhheeeee!!!!!!!!*stuttercollapsecrash*
FIFY.Nuh uh. Still awake. Haven't crashed yet. I have no clue why.

You are currently powered by a sprinkle of pixie dust from the "Gonna-Be-A-GREAT-Con" anticipation fairies.Right now I'm sitting in the hotel room talking with Matt, my guy, and Noey. We had to turn the heat down-it was blasting, and the temp is something like 30ish outside.
Their magic *always* seems to run out in while you're in a warmish room full of fellow con-goers while you are forced to wait for the guest/author/panelist you came to see... :)
Shoot me now. Woke up at 4 AM. And wife's delicate little snores were just enough to keep me from falling asleep. Looks like I'm going to be caffeine's bitch for the duration of the con.
GAH. They tried to run our card and the person didn't write down all the numbers to run it and they GAVE AWAY OUR ROOM! When they said "oops, sorry, nothing we can do" and Gryph asked for a manager, they transferred him to the overflow hotel. This is after TSA slit open my box with my sword and didn't bother to retape it (thank goodness everything seems to be there), but still! Wth?

They make great flails to use on goobs who screw up reservations...
Pictures TSA and his highly trained partner looking at the sword shaped xray on the box marked "sword" in the checked luggage:George & Lenny as TSA agents FTW!
<snip>
"Well, it could have been a sword shaped bomb. Never can be too sure, good thing we're highly trained professionals."
"uhhh... yuhhh... pro...pro....pro...uhhh... trained."
Noey, Matt, Gilly, Rob and I are here, and I haven't slept for over 24 hours. Whhhhheeeee!!!!!!!!
WHo are we looking at and who are they portraying? (Although Michael is an easy guess for the gent!)
Aine is dressed as Lara and I for the life of me I cannot remember his name, but yes he is Michael. I'm so horrible at learning names. (Sorry!)
*sigh* always a day late and a dollar short, lol. I'm just now hearing about this and I only live a couple of hours away. I should really keep an eye on his schedule!
So before signing he didn't check to find out if his publisher uses Wolfram & Hart for their legal boilerplate, did he?
Great to meet everyone!
And Garrett gave me a die with a picture of a bat as the number one, which made my day. Thanks again!
Yup. Shannon's the only sparkly one allowed in the Butcher household!
I showed it to Jim:
JIM: Shannon looks at that and says "You look like you've had a stroke." :)
ME: "A stroke... of GENIUS!"
How the hell does Shannon always look so together? ???
Prisc, I have decided you are just too much awesome to be human!I have been Blessed to spend a fair amount of time with Pris, Shecky et. al. you still have NO idea how awesome they truly are. I am amazed daily by them all and am damn proud to call them my friends
Sorry I couldn't make it as planned, guys. There were... a lot of events that happened in my life, and one of them was that I had to surrender all my dogs. They all found homes before I was ready to take them back, and I couldn't have taken all of them anyway, but this weekend I was able to get Bascha back (my Belgian). There was no way I could pick her up and then leave her alone all day in a strange place.
I was looking forward to going to Marscon, but while that would have been fun and it would have been great to meet everyone, getting Bascha back was important. :)
We had a great time at the con. I didn't get to meet as many forum peeps as I would have liked. :( But awesome of awesome, I got to sit diagonally across from Jim at the dinner. :D He's a lot of fun to talk to. Matt was straight across from me and we all talked aboutthe movies we liked and didn't like and all sorts of other things. Thank you so much Priscilla from arranging the dinner. You are truly awesome. :)
I think I know who you are now... I think I have the right face to place with the name. :)
Short girl with the really long hair usually in the company of a tall blond guy and my punky but adorable 17 year old son.
Hey, betas are NOT omniscient - as anyone who saw us when Jim dropped the bomb about Demonreach can attest. I could FEEL Fred and Terry come to quivering attention next to me, and when Priscellie and I looked at each other over Terry with what had to be absolutely MANIC grins on our faces, I think at least half of the crowd behind us erupted into laughter. :D
I could see your faces from where I was sitting on the floor and y'all looked like kids on Christmas.
And Fred, Sir, I believe you have one of the most adorable children I have ever seen! Her super powers of cute overload are astounding.
Yup. I just rewatched the Q&A to check my memory, and if you get to the part where Jim answers the question about Demonreach, keep paying attention - there's a moment of quiet after Jim points out the betas' reaction, then an outburst of laughter. I'm guessing we DID look like kids on Christmas (I know I FELT like one)!wait until I post my Video I was sitting next to Fred our banter is PRICELESS. As to Evie I was sitting next to Fred at that dinner no matter how sad you may have been he and his Family would wash it away. I have no words to express the great time and bonding that was had by us all.
I am really really enjoying the pix people are posting! Thank you all for sharing the Con with those of us who could not go. *HUGS*
*blush*
[whispers from prone position] I am not worthy...I am not worthy...
Or at least not too creepy, eh? ;D
Did you look real close at most of us? No dear you were fine as fine can be and it was my great pleasure to meet you.
Blargh. Photobucket being ornery. May have to switch to Flickr.I can see your pics in photobucket just fine as long as I let it scroll through as a slide show. If I try to click on individual pics, it freezes up on me.
You rock Shecky. Have I told you that today? ;DDon't tell him that you'll give him a big head.....n/m too late. ;D
It seems that you have a great time! But I want to know who those people are. I know some of you, but not all. For example, Chiro, are you on this photos?
I love the t-shirt saying "Choose your weapon" (But I don´t know who is the man that had it) :D
I am not in photos that I know of - I avoid anyone wielding a camera as if they were an ebola monkey.
Thank you, Heart, for not throwing any of your holy water on me. I appreciate it. ;D

Don't tell him that you'll give him a big head.....n/m too late. ;D
I say your still a cougar
That one is our very own Whingnut.
Huh. This must be a figment of my imagination:
Which is why I'm going to slide it all over to Flickr this evening (I hope).
Okay, uploaded most of my pics to Photobucket. Some are giving me flak, and I'll look into them later. In the meanwhile, the uncaptioned, raw pics are here:

Um... whom ARE you addressing? *peers suspiciously*
A picture of me! Now there's evidence! Now They can find me! :o
I always saw Heart Song too, not the Cougar part, though.
:D My Unseelie Accords?
Yah, I'm just messin around throwing around inside jokes ;D
Like in this post (http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,23713.msg1005569.html#msg1005569), I "slipped" Shecky a Mr. Pibb Extra because I saw him drinking one Sat. and he explained that he only drinks diet but cheats with those cause he can only get them below the mason dixon line.
It was great gaining non text based experiences with all you guys.
Heartsonycgr
In my head I always pronounced it Heart Song Cougar for some reason, but she explained to me that's not it.
Of course, no problem. With your people vanquished, you must be quite lonely. Of course, you can make more of you....hmmm.
Very true. Have you ever considered a career in vampirism?
But sometimes things are delicious. :PDelicious people are for cuddling and hugging, not for chomping on necks...by me at least...I know you can't help yourself, being a Rampire and all...
Hi Everyone,That seems to be a common response to the kind of crowd Jim can bring in. :D
Just wanted to thank everyone for attending MarsCon. Hope you had a good time despite our little screw-up in the schedule by putting Jim in such small rooms at the beginning. Never knew he would be that popular.
Please let me know what you liked about our con and what you didn't like. We are always trying to improve.

Okay, since youtube hates me, I finally got the six parts to the friday night panel up. Now, the tags are pretty much all the same, and all six bits are in a playlist, so if someone could tell me why the next one doesn't show up in the sidebar, I'd greatly appreciate it! Heh. Shannon claims to be embarrassed by how sick she was at the panel. I countered by telling her I WASN'T sick and was visibly more out of it than she. I even (accidentally) head-butted another beta.
I hope someone posts the Sunday pannel, I went home to spend time with Mrs Serack since she was stuck studdying for some examsI have it Jim was there for very little of the event , less then half an hour, so I opted not to post it
She was sick at MarsCon? You couldn't tell at all. She's a trooper.
That's what I was talking about. Very together lady, isn't she?she held it together well but it meant I didn't get a hug. I wanted a hug. I did get to have breakfast with her Sunday so that was cool.

That's what I was talking about. Very together lady, isn't she?
She is! And I rather enjoyed her small Q&A. She was very candid and like her husband, obviously passionate about her work. I hope she's all better now!
I have sort of a self-centered question... Did someone mention fanfics at the con or something? I'm abruptly getting a huge spike in readership and "favorite story" of the two Dresden fanfics I wrote and posted on fanfic.net Not that I'm complaining! Not at all. I'm just wondering why after all these months, there's a bunch of new readers all of a sudden. :D
Yesterday, Jim said she was at about 80%, but he had a full-blown case of the con crud.

This is from my Con-Addled brain, so bear with me...
Jim did talk about FanFic in one of his Q&A's. He said something like he used to treat fan fiction as "What FanFiction? If I acknowledge it then I have to exercise my Copy Right and stomp all over the people who are most rabid about my writing." Now with "Creative Commons" he can acknowledge that we have the right to write FanFic as long as we avoid monetary reimbursement.
Thanks
Ah, there you are! Did you enjoy the rest of the con?
It was a weekend well spent.
I wanna do it again! And this time have a little more time to hang out with people. Lesson learned: it might be cheaper to drive back and forth from Williamsburg to home, but not having to leave early would have been WELL worth it.Yeah, I'll get that when I get home.
Also: Can I get the recipe for the marshmallow chocolate s'more like things that were shared at the fan dinner?
Yeah, I'll get that when I get home.
Especially considering how inexpensive the hotel was! Split four ways, my share of the room for two nights was $35.
The Motel 6 next door was $30/night for 1 person. Opened to the outside though.
Which is fine, unless the doors weren't airtight?
What Serack is neglecting to mention is that he forgot to get a reservation anywhere. I let him use the second bed in my room (a double being cheaper than a single for some reason) and when I went to pay the extra $15-$20 nusiance charge, being a fine upstanding citizen (stop laughing!), the lady working the desk just stared at us with her mouth agape and said:
"Nobody's ever admitted to adding a person before. Let me get you an extra key. No charge."
So I gave her a beer as thanks.
Thank you thank you!Posted here-- http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,23834.0.html :)

As one of the many displaced by the reservation "problems," I concur that getting those fixed would be nice.
I'm sorry that you got displaced. I try every year to fix the problem. One reason for the problem is the change over in staff. It happens at every hotel. The staff this year was completely different from the year before. So lessons learned couldn't be retained. Guess I will go back to work and keep a closer look on it next year.
Butch
Priscillie - That is a good idea. Virginia only passed the law recently to make all restaurants non-smoking and although the area is inching closer to total non-smoking, hotels still have smoking rooms.
Butch
I think what she had in mind was just a reminder to registrants that they'll need to specify with the hotel staff which they want.
For those of us coming from states with comprehensive non-smoking laws, who aren't used to having to specify such things, it can be something of a rude awakening to get stuck on a smoking floor.
"Virginia was built on smoke."
True statement.
Whine whine whine.
