Baba Yaga the wicked witch of eastern European folkloreIMHO we have seen her, or rather one of her aspects. Baba Yaga = Mother Winter...
Carmilla. of course, im quazy enough to think shes allready shown up
;)
Do you think Mavra is Carmilla, because I always though Carmilla was well, Hot? That's something that Mavra is definitely not. Not even in a Nightmare before Christmas or Cemetery Man sort of way.
Well, to be honest, at Bianca's party Mavra is being described as sexy, only when harry uses his Sight he can see the corpselike appearance of her (and not that easy even). So, she does amintain a vanity illusion to look pretty. Though this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mavra) might just apply as well...
I also expect to meet Oberon (if he isn't the Erlking) as a counter to Kringle and I expect to see the other 3 archangels turn up in the books.
Sorry to disappoint you, but Jim has said that Oberon is dead. He was involved in a romantic? triangle with Titania and Mab and it didn't end well for him. I don't think this is in a WoJ. I think you have to watch his most recent Q&A's on YouTube to see that comment.
Dudesan: You've described Santa Claus as being the Winter King. What does that title mean? Do Winter and Summer each have a trinity of Father/King/Prince, like they do with Mother/Queen/Lady? Is the King necessarily the consort of the Queen? If so, will we be seeing Oberon at some point?
Jim: 5) The Faerie realms just aren't that structured. It's more accurate to say that he is /a/ Winter King. Or even more accurately, that he is a free Wyld Fae who is of a power level that is on par with Mab's and happens to neighbor her sphere of influence, and finds it simpler to show up to family dinners during the holidays and make polite than to start staking out boundaries and establishing treaties.
Oberon... well, the guy kind of wound up between Mab and Titania in one of those romantic triangle things, back around Shakespeare's day. He didn't make it.
WOW!!! ;D the exalted Ms Duck replying to my post. you've just made my day thank you.
WOW!!! I GOT EXCALMEY POINTS!!! THank you :D

isn't sir lancelot doomed to wander the earth til aurthers return or some such? lancelot would be nice.
i got this crazy WAG about who aurther is too ;)
in most of the versions ive read, lancelot's dead as a doornail. Are you thinking of the wandering Jew?another total WAG eldest gruff is merlin ;)
and its just a total WAG.. but in the 'romantic' versions arthur is taken to avalon by his three sisters..one of whom is Mab.

Apollo.thats likely the erlking, hunting having replaced war in some respects. apollo? sun? summer? summer king? erlking? ::)
Don't feed the duck!Sorry. Feeding ducks is a traditional thing to do for small children where I live.
The number of theories and long post alredy eat too much of my time for you to motivate her.
thats likely the erlking, hunting having replaced war in some respects. apollo? sun? summer? summer king? erlking? ::)
Gandalf, because in some parallel universe he is real darnit, and he is >>>> Merlin!
Tyr, Freya, Heimdall Prometheus.
oeh! I thought of a funny one: The Morrigan, 3 for the price of 1 8)
(and they are rumored to battle Medb a.k.a. Maeve, so the way is clear)
Personally, I'm pretty sure Heimdall has been in almost every book. He was/is the watcher, guardian of the bifrost bridge and first line of defense against the invasion of Asgard (and there is a nagging thought in the back of my head that he was only supposed to speak when sounding a warning, but I may well be wrong). Now who do we know that rarely speaks, has preternatural healing, jokes with Odin, and was called 'the observer' by his enemies? ;DBeing that they are both supposed to sound a horn to signal the end of the world, my current theory is that Heimdall is an aspect of Gabriel.
Athena- if numbers of worshippers actualy mean anything, she'd be the second most powerfull god after the WG. either way, could be interesting.
Carmilla. of course, im quazy enough to think shes allready shown up
;)
Athena still has worshipers? I know she's one of the better known greek gods and she's symbolically represented in a lot of places but I didn't realize anyone still literally worshiped her anymore.
Apollo has Sun, Light, intellect, prophecy, and truth among others. Primarily my exposure to Apollo has been as a god of wisdom enlightenment and intellect. The Greek god of of war was Ares. If he has appeared as one of the immortals I would bet he got rolled into Odin, but I don't see the Erlking as a fit at all.I like the way that my professor once described Apollo. The god of everything the Greeks were really proud of (prophecy, healing, light, civilization, etc.)
cough coughmabsheshereallreadycoughcoughWell, I was more thinking along the lines of Mother Winter revealed. Mab is only 1 aspect of the Morrigan (weirdly enough Maeve, the adversary of the morrigan, is her daughter), maybe mother winter has the other 2...
I like the way that my professor once described Apollo. The god of everything the Greeks were really proud of (prophecy, healing, light, civilization, etc.)true, however the greatest greek god (and simultaneously the least respected) was Dionysus: God of booze, booty and paaartay! I totally see Molly worshipping him by doing the one woman rave 8)
Ares was the god of war, but mainly the bad aspects of war. He was the guy that none of the other Olympians really liked (even his daddy Zeus ;D ). Athena took over the respectable aspects of war. Once you get to the Romans, Mars was given more respect
a few hundred thousand or so, as herself. A few million if you get into the 'mantles' as the DF uses the term. But I meant as total worshippers in history.
73 different relgions + thousands of years + most popular pagan goddess in western history = some truly ridiculous numbers
My word, you've got to be one of the most historically knowledgeable people I've ever encountered :-)Not only history. The Lady Duck knows science and math too. It just isn't fair ;D

I would like to see Jims version of Tinkerbell (since my other picks have been taken)
I would personally go with holy man rather then saint. I know it's 6 of one and half a dozen of the other, but it fits definitions better. How so, apart from the whole still being alive thing?
It would be a great inside joke… Perhaps JB will elevate one or two of this forums more colorful posters to godhood. The Lady Duck is already Mab. What more do you want? ;D

I was thinking of Yutte Stensgaard as Carmilla in Lust for a Vampire (1971). I guess I have learned more of my mythology from Hammer movies and the Rocky and Bullwinkle Show than school.

Thinking about Carmilla again. If; and I know its a big if, Jim wanted to bring lesbian vampires into the story, there is no reason he would have to limit himself to characters from literature. I think Fran and Miriam from Vampyres AKA Daughters of Dracula (1974) would be great choices.
(If you rent this don't watch it with your kids, it borders on soft core porn. However, it is a real horror film with some really messed up scenes in it. Great to watch in the dark.)

The stage is getting pretty crowded/ If Jim brings in another diety, I hope it is one who has been incognito but an established character. I like the Heimdall/Mac theory, I got the impression Mac was someone of importance who left the fight for a quiet place on the sidelines.
into the genre? we allready have Bianca, Lara, and Lea...Lea I guess falls under the general "ladies of winter screw anything that moves" vibe that seems to be going on... But then again, huddling up for cold nights is an excellent way to stay alive in winter :D

Other than Lara devouring Madeline; which was more cannibalistic than anything else, is there proof she swings both ways? Did I miss a inference or innuendo in one of the books?well, the whoel thing that the WCV invented girl on girl is hot, and I believe she made quite an entrance the first time we saw her... Though I am not sure for the time being...

She tried to get Luccio into bed in Turn Coat, and IIRC her partners in Backup were women.IIRC According to Thomas most white court vampires eat both sexes. Papa Raith. Was an exception.

according to thomas, while she eats men, she prefers women for company. it sin the short story. and she flirted with Murphy and AnnaWhich short story? All I can find is that she isnt very discriminating, like most of the White Court.

Backup.ya, that was my guess, but I just read through Backup and cant find anything that states an actual preference. Do you have a quote?

I could hear other soft sounds in the background, and another voice. A woman. Maybe two. Most of my family isn’t what you’d call particular, when it comes to feeding on mortals.
I'd love to see Coyote and Raven show up, but they are used heavily by Charles de Lint, so Jim may want to avoid them.
thats the one, but theres annother i recall that says she prefers females, shes not bi. i looked thru backup, ill have to check elsewhere. maybe im misremeberingShe was very interested in Ramirez. I think she is an omnivore ;D

She was very interested in Ramirez. I think she is an omnivore ;DI think it's more of a thing of virgins tasting better then those who are not ;) (good luck getting that reference)
Ok, she is a figure from more contemporary mythology, but how about Frau Blücher? In Young Frankenstein we never find out why at the mention of her name horses get frightened and sometimes thunder claps. Perhaps other animals also make scared noises around the mention of her name?
I suspect that she could be a BC Elder.
But sadly, I suppose, copyright issues might prevent seeing her in the DFs.
Since we are talking about MYTHOLOGICAL FIGURES, I'd LOVE to see Ms Duck in the series.
I'm not going to share my vision at this time.

To many people, the word "fairy" immediately calls to mind a delicate, liliputian woman with an insect's wings, flitting like a butterfly in a trail of sparkling pixie dust; a guardian angel at best and mischievious at worst, they turn our teeth into spare change, turn our puppets into children and sell Disney merchandise like hotcakes. Of course, in proper usage, "fairy" (originally "fae") is a blanket term for a whole culture's worth of supernatural beings, including gnomes, dwarves, goblins, trolls, and far stranger, sometimes horrifying monsters. One such example is known as the Nucklavee, Nucklavis or Nuckelavee; a gruesome Scottish legend as far removed from Tinkerbell as one could possibly get.
An almost god-like force of destruction and hatred, this particular "fairy" was said to haunt the waters surrounding the 70 Orkney islands, where its very name is still considered unlucky by the superstitious. Invisible and intangible in the sea, it assumed a body only upon breaking the water's surface; a form described by local fables in nightmarish detail. The being was sometimes horse-like, sometimes man-like, but most famously a fusion of both; a legless "rider" growing directly from the back of his horrendous "mount." Whatever the shape, the Nuckelavee's most terrible and single consistent feature was its completely skinless appearance, with pulsing veins and raw muscles plainly exposed.
Though the creature was said to be tremendous in size, its actual proportions were bizarrely mismatched. The humanoid's head was supposedly so large that it rolled from one shoulder to the other on a seemingly useless neck, and its oversized hands dragged along the ground at the ends of long, gangly arms. One or both heads - especially the horse - were said to bear only a single, fiery eye. The horse's legs were rather vaguely described as being "part flipper," fully flipper-like or accompanied by fin-like projections. Its mouth, or mouths, were huge and gaping, with hideous teeth and fetid, filthy breath that struck all living things with disease.
Plague, famine, drought and catastrophes of every sort were blamed on this insidious entity, whose powers ran as deep as its undying spite for mankind. The harvesting and burning of seaweed was said to especially infuriate the Nuckelavee, who would strike the island's horses with a deadly disease known as mortasheen. (And now you know where that word came from...) Only two things kept the Nuckelavee under control: an aversion to touching or even crossing fresh water, and a more benevolent spirit known as "Mither O' the Sea" or "Sea Mother," able to lift the curse of mortasheen and drive the demon back to the briny depths.
I wonder what type of Fae the Nuckelavee is a Sidhe of (I'm assuming it's a Sidhe because all the extremely powerfull Fae we've been shown are Sidhe). Is it even a Fae? It doesn't seem to share any traits in common with the Fae as described in the Dresdenverse, maybe in-universe people were just confused?
I thought a Golem might be a tough character for Harry to deal with, not being alive and without the weaknesses of human zombies, but a friend has told me that Terry Pratchett has already used more than one Golem in his books. Jim could still use one, but have to do so in a different way.
Wouldn't the fact that even before Harry became Winter Knight he was capable of throwing fuegos that would shatter stone make them rather anticlimactic opponents? Unless they've got some noteworthy supernatural toughness and magic resistance going on.one thinks of a temple dog here.. i kinda wanna see mouse smash a temple dog, proving the original is best.
I defenitely want Shiva to appear. The Hindu god of destruction. Preferably as one of Demonreach's prisoner whom Harry needs to talk to or make bargains with.I doubt that he's in demonreach. He and Kali are tasked with the purpose of "change" in the universe, we see that everyday in DF. :)
I doubt that he's in demonreach. He and Kali are tasked with the purpose of "change" in the universe, we see that everyday in DF. :)
And frankly, I find the idea that he should be restrained in demonreach offensive. Why do people think any pantheon related to destruction or death (like Hades) are "evil"? They're just doing a job, someone has to do it.
good point. i see where you're coming from...
same reason disney always makes them the villain in movies:it allows you to comfortably categorize them without searching for moral ambiguity or exploring the sensitive topic of whether death, suffering and disaster are necessary.
Well, that's basically the reason I like Pratchett: the subverts the trope and then turns that up to eleven. DEATH is doing a job. Just that. But, his hobby (as far as anthropomorphic concepts can have hobbies) is to become more human, or at least study human behaviour, often resulting in funny moments when peopel meet their end, and soon afterwards, death.
same reason disney always makes them the villain in movies:it allows you to comfortably categorize them without searching for moral ambiguity or exploring the sensitive topic of whether death, suffering and disaster are necessary.
I'd love to see a Kirin (or Qilin, spelling varies because Chinese is hard)or eating them in some myths :o seriously though yea, i wanna see erl really cut loose in an entitled way(eg, his responsibility to open a can of whoop ass) as opposed to just leading the hunt. odin too really.
I'd also like to see the Erlking in his role guarding the souls of children.
The Erlking is an extremely powerful fae but refers to sidhe as being an entirely different group of beings than himself. I think Sidhe are only those high ranking members of the two Courts.
Does he? I thought Erl was a goblin Sidhe just like [CD Spoilers]You are confusing terms. Goblins, Sidhe, and Malks are different all types of Fae, but are distinct from each other. Cait Sith, nor any other malks, are ever referred to a Sidhe. Sidhe are the beautiful human looking ones.(click to show/hide)

*awaits said quotes since Im not very familiar with the RPG text*
Grimalkin is a Sidhe of the malks (pages 49 and 47) of faerie-kind and a member of the Winter Court.
Grimalkin (see page 152), of Maeve’s Court, may be a Sidhe of malk-lineage.
The “Wyld Courts”: There are a couple powerful Sidhe on par with the Faerie Queens—the Erlking is one of them, and it’s rumored—DON’T LAUGH!—that Santa Claus (a brownie Sidhe) may be another.
I wonder if Eldest is a gruff Sidhe. Seems likely.
Sidhe
Among the faerie, Sidhe is a state of being that is somewhat political and somewhat biological. A Sidhe has all of the abilities of its faerie type, raised to greater heights of power. The Sidhe are the aristocracy of Faerie, and that mindset must be considered when dealing with them, regardless of which Court—or no Court—they are associated with.
#150 Is Toot-toot’s increase in size due to his actions, or the title and followers he has acquired doing Harry’s bidding?”
It’s due to /Harry’s/ actions, mostly. Toot done hitched his star to Harry’s wagon. As a result, he’s taken actions he never would have taken on his own, some of which had major consequences. Toot has effectively become a much more powerful being than he was as an independent dewdrop faerie. The physical growth is a reflection of that fact.
I mean gosh, where do you think the Sidhe came from in the first place?
"The being you ask me about [The Erlking] is to goblins as I am to the Sidhe. A ruler. A master of their kind. Devious, cunning, strong, and swift. He wields dominion over the spirits of fallen hunters."
a member of the Sidhe, a tall, inhumanly lovely woman, her appearance one of nigh perfection.
These are the Sidhe. They're some of the most beautiful creatures there are.
Her blond hair cleared out to Sidhe white(indicates specific physical characteristics attributed to Sidhe)
Aurora turned to me, as fast as any of the other Sidhe,
Damn that's interesting, because it directly contradicts the usage of the term Sidhe everywhere in the actual books. That makes it sound like "Sidhe" denotes status among any given type of fae creature, whereas the books refer to the Sidhe as a particular type, though granted they are a particular type that is in charge of the Courts. (indicates specific physical characteristics attributed to Sidhe)
Although to be fair in many places back in SK, Sidhe and Fae are used completely interchangeably, without any distinction of type /or/ status, though it is always used to indicate the Courts rather than any WyldFae.
Besides, if the Sidhe are the nobles of Fearie, who says that goblins are noble? I mean the Erlking might just not be a noble, but a very powerful fey ruling over the 'commoners' i.e. goblins...Which makes him a king, a noble. Being noble is about power.
Besides, if the Sidhe are the nobles of Fearie, who says that goblins are noble? I mean the Erlking might just not be a noble, but a very powerful fey ruling over the 'commoners' i.e. goblins...Well, in the usage of the books the Sidhe are the Noble of Summer and Winter, but it was also indicated that they were a ruling race, rather than "Sidhe" being a term to denote Power; for example, Mab first introduces herself as Queen of the Winter Court of Sidhe. The Erlking is the Top Dog of the Goblins, but is still a Wyldfae and outside of the political Court structure.
Q: How big will Toot get?
A: Depends on how much influence he has in the world. That’s how the sidhe gain their size and power. Mab wasn’t always as big as she is now.
With all the things Toot Toot and the Za Lord's guard have done that made a difference, and with Toot getting bigger, is that going to upset the balance in the Summer court?
The answer is no, because they are not Summer anyway, they are wildfae. And everybody over in summer is going to blame Harry for everything they do. They regard them as a tool and Harry is the guy holding it. Harry would tell you that he's probably the tool but... Anyway Toot Toot's been growing because that's where the Sidhe came from to begin with. They weren't always all tall and glamorous, they kind of got that way.
but mab can make her self as big or as little as she wants
I think that Mab and Lea are Sidhe Little Folk. This fits with this WoJ:
M
Although Mab is supposed to have been the only Winter Queen and the Fae are supposed to be ancient so...
Also, here is another WoJ that plainly states that Little Folk can become Sidhe:

ill have to dig about it, but someone asked Jim once about the Mab/shakespeare connection and he laughed it off, noting that Mab is much older then shakespeare.
furthermore, Mab says she was mortal once in CD
She can nowadays. Who knows about back when she was less powerfull...
Er I can't tell if you're replying to me or not...
I was. just pointing out that Mab(shakespeare) != Mab (butcher). Mab (butcher) much more related to Mab (original)
Serack, do you have the woj where someone asks Jim about the bill the bard Mab?
EDIT: In Cold Days(click to show/hide)
I think you missed my EDIT of the post:
The wikipedia entry on Mab says she was first mentioned by Shakespeare. Do you know where she was mentioned before that?
the name is a more modern spelling of maeb, which is also the name for morgawseThey all come from old Irish Medb, the queen of Connaught.
shes from 1st century bc celtic myhtology, the goddess of war and magic; in some variants shes a part of the morrigan

I always thought it funny that Mab's daughter Maeve just had a more modern version of her own name.
they are two sepperate entities with simillar names in the mythology; one is a goddess, the other legendary queenIt looks like the name Maeb was also one of spellings of the queen of Connaught's name. The queen is far more often mentioned.
It looks like the name Maeb was also one of spellings of the queen of Connaught's name. The queen is far more often mentioned.
There are theories that Medb was the goddess ritually married with the king.
hmm...what if Listens-to-Wind is actually Coyote? A shapeshifting trickster god. LTW is the best shapeshifter Harry knows of.If Listens t Wind was CoyoteI would expect some of it to show in his character.
another theory would be what if Coyote is Loki?
Mab is an alternate name for an aspect of the Morrigan. That mentions that the tuath'an fought a race of giants called the Fomorians. Connection to the Fomor, perhaps?
