Warning: slight spoilers for Dresden Files and Worm.

Came up with this because I wanted to stat up gods, Scion, and Shatterbird. Figured I might as well make it a bit easier to represent things like Eb's satellite trick and the Changes uber-spell while I was at it.

As always, input would be greatly appreciated. The charts are basically made-up nonsense and I would really like a sanity check on them. And the Powers are occasionally handwavy.

Also, I'm not happy with the Power names. Any suggestions?

DFRPG / I'm Helping With A Kickstarter
« on: January 26, 2014, 08:53:28 AM »
Rabid Hamster Workshop is currently running a Kickstarter for a project called Characters-By-Level. The plan is to produce a set of Pathfinder characters with descriptions and stats for every level from 1 to 20.

I don't play Pathfinder, but I like character compilations and I've been impressed by the way this one is being made. So I signed up to help out by producing DFRPG conversions for the characters in the document.

The people running the Kickstarter don't know DFRPG, and none of my friends offline are too skilled with the system, so I could use someone from around here to proofread my work. If you're interested, just let me know.

They're also looking for people to do other conversions, particularly Fate Core. Anyone here feel up to that?

DFRPG / Stats For Gods
« on: January 18, 2014, 09:05:06 PM »
Recent discussion in the Worm thread reminded me of an old project of mine: writing stats for THE GODS THEMSELVES!

Yes, the capslock is necessary.

Anyway, I think this is a good time to actually finish that project. Once I'm done, I'd like to have a God Template that can be used in a similar way to the Templates in YS...not that I actually expect anyone to play a god. As a proof-of-concept, I'll try using that Template to write up Mab and Mother Winter.

Way I see it, there are seven main things a god needs.

1. The ability to create miracles within their domain. Which are basically spells, but easier and bigger and better.
2. The ability to crush any mortal like a bug.
3. Nearly-total immunity to attack from mortals.
4. Awareness of and knowledge of cosmic stuff.
5. Attunement to their domain, possibly including Intellectus.
6. The ability to empower mortals.
7. A really high power level in general.

Think I'm missing anything?

Next post will begin the actual work.

I'm curious. What other games do y'all play, and do you think your interest in those games affects the way you play DFRPG?

DFRPG / The Appeal Of High Power Games
« on: October 07, 2013, 08:17:40 PM »
Just looking at the PbP forum, it seems like a lot of people like to play with really powerful PCs. We've got plenty of Submerged games and a fair number of above-Submerged games, with not many games in the lower canon power levels and nothing at all below Feet In The Water.

I would have expected people to play at a wide variety of levels, but at least around here there's a definite preference for high-level play.

What's up with that?

DFRPG / Updating The Wiki
« on: June 01, 2013, 02:33:34 AM »
I'm about to do a big wiki edit.

I'd appreciate help, if anyone here wants to participate.

And if anyone has any specific suggestions for edits, I'd like to hear them.

So, wanna edit the wiki?

And do you have any ideas about what could make the wiki more useful?

DFRPG / Statting Up Worm Characters
« on: May 04, 2013, 06:05:54 AM »
Is anyone here familiar with the Worm Web Serial?

Because it is pretty great, and you should read it.

Reading it made me want to try writing some of its characters up, so I'm doing that. Anyone else who's read the story should feel free to contribute their own takes on its characters.

I'll also consider requests, if anyone has any.

If you haven't read Worm, this might not make too much sense to you. Feel free to ask for clarification.

I'm starting with Simurgh and Behemoth. Dunno who I'll do next...maybe Lung.

Incidentally, I had to make some assumptions when filling out the bottom of the skill pyramids for these guys. We don't actually know whether Behemoth has social skills, for instance. But I figure he probably does, he just can't be bothered to speak to humans.

DFRPG Resource Collection / DFRPG Downloads
« on: May 02, 2013, 09:51:34 AM »
This is a thread for compiling DFRPG-related stuff that you can download. Character sheets, adventures, pretty pictures, computer programs, and other such things. Not campaign settings, though; there's another thread for those.

None of this stuff was created by me. I just collected and compiled it all in this thread and this folder.

I've included links to the threads (and sites) that the downloads originally came from, but bear in mind that most of those threads (and sites) are old. The links in them are likely to be broken, and even if they work they might lead to outdated documents.

DFRPG / Disease Rules
« on: April 23, 2013, 06:38:40 AM »
It is what the title says it is. Rules for running diseases in DFRPG.

These rules are heavily inspired by Kyeudo's take on diseases in Exalted, so lemme send a bit of credit his way.

Feedback would be great.

Diseases

A disease is an Aspect with a numerical rating. A character with a disease must roll their Endurance skill against a fixed difficulty every time a certain interval passes. If they succeed their margin of success is subtracted from the disease rating, if they fail their margin of failure is added to it.

Each disease has different effects. These effects depend on the disease's rating. The most common effects are for the disease to fill consequence slots and for the disease to inflict penalties to rolls. (If a consequence slot is full when a disease worsens to fill it, then both effects fill the slot together.) In addition to these effects, the disease Aspect can be Compelled.

Diagnosing and treating a disease requires a Scholarship roll. If the roll is successful, it lowers the difficulty of the Endurance roll to resist the disease.

Recovery gives +2 per level to disease resistance rolls. Living Dead and Powers similar to it provide full immunity to diseases.

At the GM's discretion, environmental effects may boost or penalize disease-related rolls. I recommend a -2 penalty to disease resistance for strenuous activity and a +2 bonus for strict bed rest.

Some diseases have tags that change the rules for them. Common tags (and their effects) include:

Magical (Lore modifies Scholarship rolls made to treat the disease)
Expensive Medicine X (Treating the disease requires a Resources X purchase.)
Mental (Discipline is used instead of Endurance to resist the disease. Potential doctors can use Empathy or Scholarship. Recovery, Living Dead, and other such Powers provide no protection.)
Temporary (The difficulty to resist the disease goes down by 1 each interval.)
Complex (Characters without a relevant Stunt can't even try to treat the disease.)

Sample Diseases:

The Common Cold

I'm pretty sure you know what the common cold is.

Treatment Difficulty: 3
Initial Rating: 3
Resistance Difficulty (Untreated): 3
Resistance Difficulty (Treated): 1
Interval: One day
Effects:
2+: The Common Cold fills a mild physical consequence slot.
4+: Anyone who spends time with you must roll Endurance against difficulty 0 or catch it.
6+: You take a -1 penalty to all physical, social, and mental rolls from general malaise and feeling like crap.
Tags: Temporary

The Flu

People often don't take the flu seriously, but it can and does kill people.

Treatment Difficulty: 3
Initial Rating: 3
Resistance Difficulty (Untreated): 4
Resistance Difficulty (Treated): 2
Interval: Three days
Effects:
2+: The Flu fills a mild physical consequence slot.
4+: The Flu fills a moderate physical consequence slot. You take a -1 penalty to physical rolls, and those you spend time with must roll Endurance against difficulty 1 or they'll be infected.
6+: The Flu fills a severe physical consequence slot. Your penalty to physical rolls increases to 2, and you suffer a -1 penalty to mental and social rolls as well. The difficulty to avoid infection from you increases to 2.
8+: The Flu fills an extreme physical consequence slot. The penalties to your rolls increase by 1, as does the difficulty to avoid infection from you.
10+: You die.
Tags: Temporary

The Endless Sleep

This is not exactly a disease. It's a curse. But it works in a fairly disease-like way.

Treatment Difficulty: 6
Initial Rating: 10
Resistance Difficulty (Untreated): 5
Resistance Difficulty (Treated): 1
Interval: One day
Effects:
1+: You need to sleep an extra 6 hours each day.
4+: You take a -1 penalty to all physical and mental rolls from drowsiness.
8+: You are asleep and cannot do anything. On the bright side, you have no biological needs.
16+: You fall asleep forever and are effectively dead.
Tags: Complex, Magical, Expensive Medicine 4

Cursed Madness Of The Wolf God's Crypt

Anyone who defiles the tomb of The Wolf God will gradually turn into a horrible monster. This is why.

Treatment Difficulty: 5
Initial Rating: 1
Resistance Difficulty (Untreated): 6
Resistance Difficulty (Treated): 4
Interval: One month
Effects:
1+: You take a -2 penalty to all rolls made to control your anger.
5+: You have the Berserk Stunt for Fists. If this disease puts you below 0 Refresh, you lose your free will and become a puppet to madness.
10+: You have the Spiritual Co-Pilot Power and Sponsor Powers. The Wolf God is the spirit and the sponsor.
15+: You have the Echoes Of The Beast Power. The wolf is your beast.
20+: You have the Inhuman Strength Power.
25+: You have the Inhuman Speed Power.
30+: You have the Claws Power. You now look rather inhuman.
35+: You have the Inhuman Recovery Power. It doesn't apply to silver.
40+: You have the Inhuman Toughness Power. It doesn't apply to silver.
45+: You have the Hulking Size Power. You don't look remotely human.
50+: You have the Supernatural Strength Power.

DFRPG / Law Talk
« on: February 02, 2013, 06:45:15 AM »
As you all know, we spend a lot of time talking about the Laws of Magic. Especially the first one.

It'd be nice if we could keep all that discussion in one place instead of letting it spill all over the forum.

So, here's a thread for Law talk. If you feel the need to discuss what is and what is not Lawbreaking, do it here.

And now for some links to previous discussions. They're organized by the issue being discussed. Some discussions are linked under multiple issues.

DFRPG / Dresden Files x Exalted Crossover Story
« on: January 22, 2013, 12:50:41 AM »
Are you familiar with the Exalted RPG? If not, I suggest you become so. It's pretty cool.

Anyway, this is a crossover fan-fiction featuring the Dresden Files and Exalted. You should be able to understand it even if you know jack squat about Exalted.

I didn't write this; I'm reposting it for somebody on the Exalted forums.

Not sure if this is exactly the right board, but this has to do with RPGs and with the Dresden Files so I figure this one is as good as any other.

Here goes:

Quote from: God_of_Awesome
[WARNING: A little bit of Doctor Who's voice may have slipped into Harry Dresden's while I wasn't looking]

"Mab."

Everything was in place, the neat little circle all drawn. Candles too, a nice little touch.

"Mab."

This is it, this is the end of Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden as you know him. Really, I dunno how long she'll let me stay as myself.

"Ma-"

The words never leave my lips, it's kind of hard to talk when someone's shushing you. I guess it's gotta be human instinct, when someone puts their fingers on your lips you shut the hell up. When we're a bunch of dirty cavemen huddling together in a dank dark hole, you better shut the fuck up or everyone's getting eaten by saber tooth tigers. Those who don't get their throats slit and left to slow down the tigers. Ergo, natural selection.

I thought I must have actually completed the summoning, I thought I summoned Mab. My first guess was this was Mab right in front of me. My second guess was Titania for some reason. Pale as the moon, that's the right word. Not as pale as snow or as the sun on a hot summer day, but the moon. I was getting a ton of moon vibes from this woman. It's one of those things with particularly powerful beings, unless they're trying to be subtle they tend to spell out their nature.

You would give up everything you were.

You would become what you abhor.

You would tear down all the rules you upheld.

And all for the sake of love.

"Oh man, you know me pretty well but I dunno you," I said as my mouth motored, "Are you stalking me on Facebook? Usually, that's my brother, on account of him actually having a Facebook."

And you would mock me. The silver white lady leaned forward, hovering over me. She reached over and she grabbed my staff, leaning up next to my paralyzed guy bed, lifting it up, You have got some vitriol dipped brass balls on you.

"While I love beautiful women admiring by balls and touching my staff, I'm afraid I've got my soul to sell."

Not this day, Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden.

Well, that made me flinch. Not just what she said but how she said it. It wasn't that she used all the right cadences but she used the wrong ones. Like wrong at every point, in every possible way, in the exactly right way. The only way she could have done that is if she knew how to say it the right way and then purposefully decided to turn it upside down. It'd be comparable to her saying it backwards, except not.

Today you change. Today you win.

"A winner is me?" Honestly, I couldn't help myself.

My Shard has not presented you a single test because you passed every one life set before you.

It was kind of like the camera had been focused on her and it panned out to show the audience the scene had changed. I had really been focused on her, almost the same way I'd be focused on Mab. She was just as beautiful except it was kind of hard for me to pin down how. I mean, I'm Harry Dresden, I like the ladies, but every time I tried to cop a feel with my eyes it was like I was looking at something different. Her body was like the Twilight Zone.

When that camera of my confused and wandering gaze panned out, I noticed we weren't in Father Foothill's sickbed any more and most importantly I wasn't in my clothes anymore. Neither was she as she climbed on top of me.

"Okay. I think it's fair to warn you that I might not be functional down-"

Then she reached under me, just above my butt, and unbroke my back with a sharp crack. I could tell because I have never, ever have felt my legs so much until then. All of my little piggies were wiggling with joy.

"Nevermind then."

From there her hand trailed over my body and where her fingers went, silver lines were left behind, scrawled into my skin. She was tattooing me and despite Butters's insistence I got the impression that these weren't gonna go away.

Now you take up new titles although a few you technically already have. Witch. Warden.

"Wizard. Wiiizard. Witches are for girls."

But these ones are new, and I give them to you freely, with no strings attached. Lunar. Exalted. Chosen of the Me, Luna, the Moon.

"So, these titles, do I get to freely tell you 'No'?" I asked the Moon.

Luna smirked at me, reaching up to my forehead. I could feel her scrawling more there, a pair of crescents that formed a circle.

No.

"Oh, alright then."

I looked down over the marks she was scrawling into my body. I couldn't make out what they meant but they seemed to be chronological, they were telling a story on my body. Lost and gain, betrayal, fire, fear, so much fear and then a spot of hope, growth and victory after victory by the skin of my teeth. Hell's Bells, this was my story! This was as good as my Name written all over my skin in abstract scrawl minus the actual words.

This was freaking me out. Okay, this was freaking me out MORE. I dunno who this Moon Goddess was, I never heard of her. Oh, I've heard of Moon Goddesses named 'Luna', I have heard of a dozen of them, but I never heard of any wanting a piece of Harry Dresden. Also this Shard business, had she tagged before? I wonder if I could still call up Mab, devil you know and all.

It would be useless here, not in the sanctum of your own soul.

Fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fu-

"So how can I trust you?"

You can't. She laughed. I heard a chorus of laughter, females, males, things. Like I said before, when they aren't trying to hide it, powerful beings tend to reveal their nature. Most of the time, they're a little subtle, it's considered bad decorum and bad sense to flash your nature bits all over the place or people go figuring out your weaknesses. Luna, I could tell, was an amalgam of many beings and the fact that she didn't give two wits about showing it worried me.

But if you're curious, I can tell you my story. You're not obligated to believe me.

Alright, I'll bite, I was curious. It not like it looks like I've got a choice and hey, she unbroke my back, so maybe she gets a few words in edgewise.

My sisters and my brother wanted to rebel against our masters and creators, but they had designed us to be unable to raise a hand against them. So we broke off Shards of ourselves and made them choose mortals that would please us to have our power. We made it so we could not order our Chosen, or our masters would make them turn away. We made it so we could not take back our power, or our masters would order us to do so. So even after our Chosen defeated our masters, these Shards of our power kept choosing mortals who would use our power according to their own free will.

Alright, so in a sense, I got this free ride because she and her siblings had to give it to me so they could take advantage of a loop hole in their in-built geas. Actually, sounded a helluvalot like the Knights, in that they could do what the Queens couldn't. Sounds like Luna had to be even more hands off than the Queens. I still had questions though.

Ask away. I'm not done yet.

Hell's Bells! That's creepy.

"Okay, um, first off, how come I never heard of...?"

The Exalted. My sisters' Chosen have always been more subtle and much more... controlling. In fear, my sisters' Chosen locked away my brother's and my own Shards in a succesful coup, although one by one my own Shards have wormed their way out of their prison and back upon the Emerald Mother, this has only been recently.

Relatively, I imagined.

Around the 1500's, by your reckoning.

Yep.

"So, if these Shard things operate on their own, how come you're here?"

Just because they don't need me doesn't mean I can't help. I do enjoy this personal touch. And your Spirit Guide has been unnaturally quiet, so I think you deserve a few pointers while I'm here.

"Alright, um... damn, now I have another question."

Your questions about what a Spirit Guide means will answer itself.

Oh, well, that's convenient.

"Okay, how long have I had this Shard?"

Since you defeated the Hetakonchire called He Who Walks Behind.

That.... that's a long time. I would have repeated that sentiment out loud, but I'd figured out that that wasn't necessary.

Had my brother's Shards not been locked away, I am sure one of them would have chose you. But they were still locked away in a prison powered by their own perfection at the time.

Well that just raised some easily read implications.

They broke out a few years ago, She clarified. She let her eye wander down my chest and smiled a smile that made me flush as I realized she was doing more then checking her work, although she was doing that too. This Moon Goddess actually intimidated me a little, intimidated me a lot, and getting checked by her was a little- was very worrying. She seemed satisfied though.

One more thing.

She hefted my staff and tossed it behind me. Before I could turn around and see where it went, and wonder why it existed in my soulscape when my clothes didn't, she grabbed my arms and forced them apart, keeping me from turning. I was also standing up, don't know when that happened.

Your Guide. I may take part in the Tatooing by choice but your Guide must take part in it.

"And if there is one thing about your life's story, Harry Dresden, is that it is one written in pain."

Before my brain could fully realize who's voice that was behind, I felt a sharp searing pain drive horizontally across my back. I realized my staff was being used as a cane to lash into me. It happened again, four more times at oblique angles and somehow I could feel the pattern it made, a pentagram. Luna dropped me and I fell to my knees on the blank black soulscape, turning around to see her, a woman that haunted my mind for a very long time.

"I've only now made this Spirit Shape, Harry Dresden, but I pulled it from your higher soul, from your memories," She said, "You may like the name that comes with it."

Luna knelt down behind me and whispered in my ear, a name that I knew was this apparition's as well as my own, since she was as much part of me as she was part of her.

Five Wings And Five Lashes.

But I knew what else to call her.

"Lash."

DFRPG / The Warden Sword As An Item Of Power
« on: January 04, 2013, 01:58:38 AM »
The recent thread about Warden Swords, combined with the fact that I'm updating the IoP list, inspired me to write up an Item of Power Warden Sword. Thanks to the Might Over Magic custom Power, it was easy.

Thoughts?

WARDEN SWORD [-1]
Description: The Wardens of the White Council are famed for their magical, super-sharp, spell-cutting silver swords. This is one of those swords. It was created by Luccio, the leader of the Wardens, specifically for a single Warden.
Musts: You must be a Warden of the White Council, with an Aspect reflecting that.
Note: Warden Swords are canonically Enchanted Items. This is an alternate interpretation.
Skills Affected: Weapons.
Effects:
[-0] Specific Wielder. A Warden Sword is only magical in the hands of the Warden it was made for.
[-1] It Is What It Is. It's a supernaturally sharp sword. Weapon 5 for the rightful bearer, weapon 3 for other people.
[-0] Unbreakable. As an Item of Power, this item cannot be broken except with a magical ritual that opposes its nature.
[+2] One-Time Discount. A full-sized sword is tricky to conceal at best.
[-2] Might Over Magic. A Warden Sword can cut magical spells the way a laser cuts butter.

DFRPG Resource Collection / Custom Templates
« on: December 26, 2012, 09:52:50 AM »
We don't have a thread for new Templates, so I'm making one.

The first three posts in this thread will be used to store brief descriptions of the Templates, and links to their complete write-ups. Anything that might require special GM attention will be noted in a warning.

I doubt I'll need the other two posts, but...eh, reserving posts is easy.

If you've got a Template you want indexed, just post it here.
