DF Spoilers / Cowl's Identity [FPOTM2 11.2016]
« on: November 15, 2016, 12:36:25 AM »
Who is Cowl?

For the purpose of this poll, we're assuming that Harry's observation in Dead Beat is correct, and that Cowl is a mortal practitioner.

For the sake of keeping the list reasonable, Time Travel/Parallel Universe options have not been made available for anyone other than Harry.

Some that are listed seem highly unlikely, due to being dead, on-page with Cowl, the wrong gender, or some other limiting factor.  But as some theorize that Simon could be Cowl, I've included others that are normally overlooked as well.

Curator's note:  Griff followed my requested convention for this kind of thing by starting with "Other."  If you vote "Other" please post your choice so that it may be added to the bottom of the list.  Then you can change your vote to your actual choice.  -Serack

Community Cork Board / Worldbuilders 2015 - Calling All Paranetters
« on: November 11, 2015, 04:51:25 AM »
Worldbuilders 2015 is underway and accepting donations.  This year they've made a point to mention that teams can be made.  There's no prize or anything, but I thought it'd be cool if Butcher's fans were represented.

In that sense, we've created a team called the Paranetters, which can be selected when making donations.  The page for the team is here (http://tinyurl.com/q9em6by).

For details on Worldbuilders and Heifer International, head over to Patrick Rothfuss' blog.  He's got a breakdown of all the prizes available to individual donors, deals on purchases that will go toward the drive, and discounts for other vendors contributing.

DFRPG / Fanfic characters
« on: October 28, 2015, 01:43:09 AM »
Hello folks.  Not sure if anyone is up for this or not, but I'm looking for volunteers to share existing/create new wizard characters for a fanfic I'm going to write.  I've written four Dresdenverse fanfics so far, and the next one is the first that will have wizards in it.

I'd need to know the character profile basics, temperament and personality, and strengths and weaknesses.  I'd also need to know if you'd approve of them living, dying, or doing something in between.  Character use would be something akin to Kawasaki and Yoshimo from DEAD BEAT, with the possibility of more screen time.

Thanks, and let me know!

So back at the beginning of time, TWG was looking around, and realized there were way too many bad things still running around reality.  They needed to be locked up, but there wasn't a really good place to do it.

So TWG was like, "Oi! Raphael! Make an earthly prison to hold these bad things!"

And Raphael was like, "WTF, Father ofman? That sounds like a LOT of work!"

But TWG was like, "You need to fekkin' do it, ya shite!"

And Raphael was like, "OMTWG, fine!"  And he did.

It was all made to sound a lot more dignified, of course, when they had it written down.
Quote
And again the Lord said to Raphael: "Bind Azazel hand and foot, and cast him into the darkness: and make an opening in the desert, which is in Dudael, and cast him therein. And place upon him rough and jagged rocks, and cover him with darkness, and let him abide there for ever, and cover his face that he may not see light. And on the day of the great judgment he shall be cast into the fire."[2]

So Raphael set out to make a prison.  But since this thing needed to hold multi-dimensional beasts, it needed to be multi-dimensional.  He had to make it across time as well as space.

All good and well, except for the same Guy that told him to do it also said "Oi! And no muckin' about in reality, eh?"

All the other Turtles Archangels got a good laugh at that, but Raphael told them where they could stick their flaming swords.

So Raphael had to make a prison, on Earth, across time, but not make it himself.  What's an Archangel to do?

Well, he looked over reality with his non-linear vision, and picked an ornery bastard to help him: Merlin.

Raphael was like, "Listen here, pipsqueek.  We're going to build a prison."

And Merlin was like, "Where the fekk did you just come from?!  Get out of me privvy!"

So after Merlin was finished, Raphael told him what was up, and Merlin was eventually persuaded to help.

But Merlin was a bit cranky (a normal state of being for wizards) and a bit worried about how it was supposed to actually work, seeing as it required a LOT of power to operate, and he couldn't travel through time.

But then Raphael was like, "Don't worry, you little pipsqueek.  I figured that part out."

Raphael gave up his Grace to Merlin, so that he could create the prison in one place at five times, and power the prison with his Grace.

After stopping Merlin from going to where Las Vegas would eventually be for a long weekend with the Grace, Raphael had him get started on the prison.

While he was working, Merlin expressed a concern, because even in his time, people loved a good jail-break story.  He was like, "What the fekk is going ta happen if they get out?"

Raphael slapped him upside the head, explaining, "That's what the banefire part of the setup was, ya idgit."

Merlin wasn't sure what an idgit was, but after Raphael explained he'd just finished watching a non-linear Supernatural marathon, Merlin figured it out.

See, the nifty Swords of the Cross can destroy whatever they need to.  Whatever the bane of the beast is, they act in that manner.  And so, knowing how they work, Raphael had included a fail-safe in the Demonreach blueprints he gave to Merlin.  If there was a prison break, his Grace would turn into something called Banefire, burning big and hot, hopefully enough to kill whatever was escaping.

And then, when their work was finally done, the two shared a pint.  Raphael got drunk for the first time, although he didn't like the quality of the offerings.  He figured he'd do something about that, now that he was mortal, and had nothing better to do.

So what happened next?

Good question.  Glad you asked.

Legend has it that Merlin disappeared.  So did Raphael -- or at least, the mortal that had been Raphael; he only made the one big foray into legend.  No-one's sure where they ended up, but there are a few theories.

1) By giving Merlin his Grace, Raphael was out of the picture.  He set up shop nearby to keep an eye on things, worked on making beer taste better, and enjoyed retirement as much as possible.  Merlin, on the other hand, had to stick around.  Since the Grace was given to him, he had to stay at Demonreach, to keep things running.  He spent a long time doing all the work, until one day he said, "screw this, I'm going to make an artificial construct vessel to do all the work".  So he set about making a tall, dark, brooding vessel to walk around the island incessantly, waiting for someone to drop a demon off to be imprisoned.  But since Merlin still had the pervy guy's Grace, he couldn't just go running around and risk ruining it.  So he ended up locking himself in Demonreach, where he would exist forever, wouldn't risk the Grace Falling due to his actions, and had to deal with awe-struck wizard types popping by his crystal cell every couple hundred years.  That's where he stayed, and spent eternity cursing himself for ever coming out of the privvy to meet with that pervy guy.

2) By giving Merlin his Grace, Raphael figured he was out.  Blah blah blah.  Merlin was stuck on Demonreach, until he said, "screw this, I'm going to make an artificial construct vessel to bear that pervy guy's Grace".  So he set about making a tall, dark, brooding vessel for the Grace.  The vessel didn't really understand everything the small wiry guy was yelling at him, but agreed to hang out until something better came along.  He only wished the old coot had taken the time to give him a name before he'd headed off to some place that would eventually be called Vegas.  He chilled there for ages, and enjoyed the occasional visit by this super hot but actually super cold chick that called him things like "Ancient Thing".  She called him the "Demon Binder" a couple times, seeing as she considered him the new Raphael-mantle bearer, despite him rumbling non-verbally at her several times that it is not, in fact, a mantle.  But did she listen?  NooOOoo.  It's all "mantle this, mantle that".

But why five points in time, you ask?

Because five is a powerful number, idgit.  It's like this.

1) Time is linear.  It has a beginning and an ending.

2) Raphael picked five points across time to create the prison, so that it would always have existed, at least in this reality.

3) But while time is linear, it's also circular, layering atop itself.  It's cyclical, going round and round in a spiral on top of itself.  Like a big old Slinky.

4) Those five points in time aren't all together, or in a convenient row.  They're spread all around, making it difficult.

5) So Raphael looked at it from above, and looked through the layers of time, finding the five points.

6) Then he made time bridges connecting them.  Five lines connecting five points.

Voila!, from the beginning or end of time, looking back through the Slinky of time, he created a pentagram.  The symbol of magic used in the creation of Demonreach isn't just in space, but in time, thus binding the prisoners in yet another dimension.

I know, you're thinking, "OMG you are incredibly awesome at drawing in MSPaint!"

Thank you.  It's a gift.

Author Craft / Too many species, or not enough?
« on: May 22, 2015, 02:05:39 AM »
So... I've started up work again on one of my little projects.  I'm setting up a universe for a book series.  It's going to revolve around three species.  One species will be human, and the other two will be humanoid.  Additionally, the two humanoid species each have 4 or 5 subspecies.  I've got characters in mind for each of them.

BUT... I've also got the opportunity to include other species, each significantly smaller in population.  I don't have any characters in mind for them, but I like the idea of having them for more depth.

Should I add more species as filler, or should I keep it simple?  They're not necessary to the story, but if I put them in, there's no telling how they might evolve in the story as I write it out.

How many is too many?  Should I create a species just to have a single tradesman be something different?  Should I create a species without any idea of purpose in the story?

On one hand, I think of STAR WARS, and how there are dozens of species, most of which you don't know their names or histories when you see them in the movies.  They're just there, and they add to the universe without too much work on the planning side of things.

On the other hand, I think of LotR, and how there's really only five or so species/races.  They seem like enough, and adding more might detract from what are supposed to be the primary races we're concerned about.

I don't want to go into the setting of the universe, but I think it could go either way.  It's neither traditional fantasy nor science fiction.  And since the story is only supposed to span 5 books or so, telling the story of the three races interacting, I'm not sure what to do.

As a reader, would you rather try and keep track of only 9-10 similar but different races, or would you rather a more diverse backdrop of species to touch upon without too much exposition on them?

Cinder Spires Books / TCS:TAW Book Description
« on: March 05, 2015, 12:37:25 AM »
Book Description:
Jim Butcher, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Dresden Files and the Codex Alera novels, conjures up a new series set in a fantastic world of noble families, steam-powered technology, and magic-wielding warriors…

Since time immemorial, the Spires have sheltered humanity, towering for miles over the mist-shrouded surface of the world. Within their halls, aristocratic houses have ruled for generations, developing scientific marvels, fostering trade alliances, and building fleets of airships to keep the peace.

Captain Grimm commands the merchant ship, Predator. Fiercely loyal to Spire Albion, he has taken their side in the cold war with Spire Aurora, disrupting the enemy’s shipping lines by attacking their cargo vessels. But when the Predator is severely damaged in combat, leaving captain and crew grounded, Grimm is offered a proposition from the Spirearch of Albion—to join a team of agents on a vital mission in exchange for fully restoring Predator to its fighting glory.

And even as Grimm undertakes this dangerous task, he will learn that the conflict between the Spires is merely a premonition of things to come. Humanity’s ancient enemy, silent for more than ten thousand years, has begun to stir once more. And death will follow in its wake…

DF Reference Collection / Who Attacked Arctis Tor, and Why
« on: February 13, 2015, 05:19:17 PM »
I'm looking for theories on Who attacked Arctis Tor , and specifically What was their Motivation?

I can't see anything but two scenarios, as I don't see an actual motivation for anyone else other than those two.  But Eldest Gruff opinioned in another thread that there may be other factions with motivations to attack Arctis Tor.  I'd like to see what others think about the who and why of the attack.

Specifically, please provide at least the name of the group involved, and an actual reason for their attack.

i.e. (the only two theories I see as being legitimate)

The Circle
Who: The 'Circle', a faction of powerful beings working together with common goals, while also pursuing personal gain and personal own goals.
 > Theoretical Members: Cowl, Maeve, Vito Malvora, Thorned Namshiel, Arianna Ortega, Lord Raith, Lord Omogh, Peabody, others
 > Participated in the Attack: Thorned Namshiel, unknown others
When: During the events of DEAD BEAT
 > When Harry summoned Lea and Mab came instead, the Circle took their shot.  Maeve opened a gate to Arctis Tor for her allies and then sped up time at Arctis Tor.  In the minutes that Mab was away, hours passed at Arctis Tor, and the Circle had ample time to press the defenders.  When Mab returned, the attackers were routed before they got to the Winter Garden.
Why: Multiple goals, including weaken Winter, occupy Winter's forces, retrieve Lea
 > The events of DEAD BEAT were epic in scale.  The Red Court nearly wiped out the White Council.  Their attacks should have kept the White Council too busy to respond to the Darkhallow attempt.  If it had succeeded, Cowl would have then had the power to finish off the White Council.  But to harass the wizards in Faerie would draw the ire of the Fae courts.  The attack on Arctis Tor successfully put Winter into a defensive mode, which then did the same for Summer, thus freeing the Ways for the Ramps to pursue the White Court.
 > Lea might also have been a member of the Circle, as she was working with some of its theoretical members in GRAVE PERIL.  If so, they would want to free her so that she could join them in taking on Mab.  Lea is only second to Mab in Winter, and with her and Maeve combining forces with the other Circle attackers, they might have stood a shot at defeating Mab.
Relevant Plot Details
 > The Fae's inaction during the Ramps' initial intrusion two days prior to the Darkhallow are explained by Luccio, in that the Fae were caught off-guard.  But the Fae's inactivity for the next nine months goes unexplained, other than Winter being on guard at the border, and thus occupying Summer.  There doesn't seem to be a reason for Winter to guard the border prior to the attack on Arctis Tor.  But if it had already been attacked, and Mab was in hyper-defensive mode because of the betrayals involved, it would explain the entire time-span.
 > The speed up of time in Arctis Tor to allow time for the attack is supported by the events of PROVEN GUILTY.  While just minutes passed in Arctis Tor, a day passed in the real world.  Using the reverse flow, hours could have passed in Arctis Tor while minutes passed in the real world, when Mab was speaking with Harry.
 > This theory gives a credible explanation to how Mab found out about Maeve's betrayal.  She was still speaking as of DEAD BEAT, but we know that some point after Harry's talk with her at the lake, Mab learned of Maeve's betrayal/infection.
 > This theory does not address the smell of hellfire that still lingered around Arctis Tor nine months later in PROVEN GUILTY.  But it does allow for enough time for the remains of the fallen warriors to rot away to bones.

The Outsiders/NemesisFormerlyKnownAsBlackCouncil
Who: Nemesis agents and summoned Outsiders
 > Theoretical members: Namshiel, Maeve, others we haven't seen
When: Some time after the events of DEAD BEAT, but before Harry's arrival in Arctis Tor in PROVEN GUILTY
 > In PROVEN GUILTY, Harry advises that the attack could have taken place thousands of years ago or just minutes.  The intensity of the emotions he got from the scene made it seem more recent, but the decayed bodies implied older.  Some point between DEAD BEAT and Harry's raid would be enough of a window for these to both be true.
Why: Defeat Mab, Weaken Winter, Draw troops from the Gates, Free Lea, Winter Wellspring target
 > As the leader of Winter, Mab is the choice target for the Outsiders to defeat.  If they were able to reach her and defeat her, infected Maeve would become the person in charge of the Gates.
 > The attack could have been aimed at drawing troops from the Gates.  With all of Winter already on guard around Winter's borders, they might have been under the impression that others would come to the aide of Arctis Tor under attack.
 > Infected Lea likely has information, albeit limited, on Nemesis and how it works.  On top of that, she's a powerful ally second only to Mab in Winter.  If they could free her, at minimum they'd be regaining a powerful ally and removing Mab's access to intelligence on Nemesis.  At best, Lea could then turn against Mab along with the attackers, and possibly defeat her with their help.  If not, then they'd at least have a powerful ally with intricate knowledge of the defense of the Gates who could help attack them from within with other forces.
 > Part of me wonders if there isn't also a threat to Winter if something happens to its Wellspring.  I'm not sure that it could be corrupted per se, since Mab locked up an infected Lea in it.  But part of me wonders if by attacking the Wellspring with a lot of power, it might weaken Winter in some capacity, however briefly, that would help the attackers at the Gates.
Relevant Plot Points
 > This theory does not explain why Winter is on guard for the full nine months between DEAD BEAT and PROVEN GUILTY.  It makes sense to be on guard after the attack on Arctis Tor, but not before.
 > This theory explains who there could be time enough for the bodies to have decomposed, and also a short enough time to leave the traces of hellfire in the air.

DF Reference Collection / Mab preventing use of Little Chicago
« on: January 30, 2015, 11:59:45 PM »
This came up recently, and I think most of the parts were mentioned separately, but wanted to consolidate if we could.

The theory is that Mab prevented Harry from using Little Chicago during the events of TURN COAT, and possibly even prevented him from using Mouse for his tracking abiltiies.  (I'm leaving out any speculation about her motive, as that's more subjective)

Possible Clues
 - Harry doesn't mention LC at all in the book, and instead uses his copper circle in the basement to look for Thomas, rather than LC.
 - Harry describes the table holding LC, but not that it has LC, and only describes it as being covered in a tarp.
 - Harry has a convenient headache when trying to figure out how to track Thomas, which distracts him from Mouse, who Harry later realizes could have tracked Thomas.

So I'm thinking about participating in National Novel Writing Month.  I've never done it before.  I'm looking at the site, and I guess I'm confused.  I thought they had some sort of subject or topic we're supposed to start with, and then we go from there.  Is it just anything we think of?

DF Reference Collection / [CD Spoils] Golden Light
« on: April 06, 2013, 02:06:00 AM »
So what do we think about the golden light emanating from Harry's dream-staff during the mental whammy showdown with HWWBf?
Quote
I lifted my staff and golden white fire began to pour from the
carved runes as I gathered power into it.

We've seen the staff glow a variety of colors, but golden-white is a combo I don't think we've seen before, at least in the staff.  There was at least one occasion that golden light emanated from the runes of his blasting rod, but as a fire magic construct, gold/yellow/red/white might be common.

The only other golden glow I could find reference too (real quick search) was a golden glow around Ammoracchius in GP, which seemed to be a natural color for it in opposition to Harry's blue wizard light.
Quote
Amoracchius burst into conflicting shades of blue and golden
light, as my power wrapped around it, a coruscation of sparks
that made Mavra howl in surprise and pain.

Do we think this was a temporary thing since it was in his head?  Or do we think it might be a sign of another change?  Maybe some aftereffect of his death and rebirth?  Or a new manifestation of soulfire, which I believe has previously been portrayed with a bluish light.

43
There was a WoJ somewhere (I can't find it now) that talked about how he repetitively uses words for characters, in order to quickly invoke a particular recognition in the reader.  He talked about silver eyes and others for Thomas, as well as other Wamps.  The boards have noticed that mildewy and stale seem to be associated with Cowl's gates.

What I decided to look for was common usages of the terms applied to Outsiders, now that we've had more direct exposure to them.  This isn't a definitive theory, so much as pointing out the possibilities.

KEY WORDS
The following words and combinations are commonly found describing Outsiders, Outsider magic, and mordite from the outside:
 - 'cold and greasy'
 - 'cold and oily'.
 - 'familiar'
 - 'nauseating'
 - 'cloying'
 - 'slithered'

Evidence
(click to show/hide)
(click to show/hide)
(click to show/hide)
(click to show/hide)

Analysis
First, the world cold is used to describe pretty much every dark magic in the series.  So I only considered the word cold noteworthy when in combination with the other words.  The same goes for slither, and all its variations.  It has been used widely, whereas others, such as oily and greasy, are only used to describe people's hair or particular types of dark magic.

My opinion is that we may be able to differentiate those who have been infected by the use of these key words in the description of their power.  Or the lack there-of, in some instances.

The Usual Suspects
Kravos - Infection Possible.  There were a multitude of times Harry felt Kravos' power, including consuming some himself, but only this instance of feeling 'naseuating' power.  The other descriptions are closer to the dark, emptiness used to describe Mavra's style.
(click to show/hide)

Mavra - Infection Unlikely.  While described as cold, the dark and empty connotations aren't used for Outsiders specifically, except for the speculated emptiness around Raith, and the emptiness around Mordite.
(click to show/hide)

Bianca - Infection Unlikely.  While she may very well have been infected, the words used to describe her magic are like those of Mavra.  It's not condemning, like those used to describe Outsiders themselves.
(click to show/hide)

Elaine - Infection HIGHLY PROBABLE.  Elaine uses magic several times in SK and WN, but the only time she uses magic for evil is when she casts the mind fog.  In that instance, Harry notes feeling almost every single key word for Outsiders.  What's more, he picked more of that same feeling (for the first time) when he returned home and found her under DuMorne's compulsion.
(click to show/hide)
(click to show/hide)

Thorned Namshiel - Infection Possible.  We know that Mab has assumed Namshiel worked with the other Infected to attack Arctis Tor and free Lea.  In one instance of his magic use, Namshiel was described with some key words.
(click to show/hide)

Arianna - Infection Possible.  A key-word combo was used for her magic in Ch.  We know she had ties to Bianca, who had ties to Cowl & Kumori.  Whether they somehow managed to get Arianna infected is questionable.
(click to show/hide)

The Well - Outsider Imprisonment Possible.  Several key-words were used to describe the power of the Well in CD.  Whether this was due to some Outsiders being imprisoned there, or simply a combo of all of the evilness, is up to interpretation.
(click to show/hide)

Cowl - Infection Doubtful.  Despite having personally helped infecting Lea, and knowing of Outsiders working with Ramps in DB, Harry's description of Cowl's magic specifically points out the lack of the tell-tale key-words.
(click to show/hide)

Kumori - Infection Doubtful.  Same for Kumori.  Harry notes the lack of nastiness when it comes to her power.
(click to show/hide)

In Conclusion
For me, the most condemning was Elaine's use of the mind fog.  The others aren't too bad, with only one or two words in common.  But Elaine's exposure under DuMorne, combined with the mind fog description, almost matches Outsider descriptions perfectly.

Make of it what you will.  If we include the emptiness and darkness used to describe mordite and Raith's protection, then maybe Mavra and the others are infected as well.  Or maybe there are only so many words that JB can use to describe nasty black magic, and there's no correlation.  My current guess is that there's something to it, but we won't know for sure for a while.

DF Reference Collection / Who recruited and trained Victor Sells?

Who recruited and trained Victor Sells?  I've previously assumed Mavra, but after reading a couple things, I've changed my mind.

FM - Pg 341 - Harry
Quote
I never had found out who exactly was behind the warlock who showed up the previous spring. Black wizards don’t just grow up like toadstools, you know. Someone has to teach them complicated things like summoning demons, ritual magic, and clichéd villain dialogue. Who had been his teacher?

Training Mortals with Potential
BR - Pg 333 - Lord Raith
Quote
“Wizard, I believe you have met my assistants.” Two women rose from the shadows within the circle and faced me. The first was Madge, Arturo’s first wife, the disciplined businesswoman.

BR - Pg 335 - Harry
Quote
I shot a hard glance at Madge. She had power.

SF - Pg 279 - Harry
Quote
I might be giving Victor Shadowman too much credit. He was as powerful as a full-blown wizard, but he didn’t have the education.

Training in Summoning Demons
BR - Pg 346 - Harry
Quote
I’d torn apart He Who Walks Behind, but even so he’d left me with some unnerving scars. And the ritual Madge was using was calling that thing back.

SF - Pg 293 - Harry
Quote
I had seen only one person call a demon before—and I had killed my old master shortly after. The thing crouched in front of Victor, its lightning blue eyes whirling with shades of scarlet hate, staring up at the black-clad wizard, trembling with the need to tear into him, to rend and destroy the mortal being who had dared summon it forth.

Training in Ritual Magic
BR - Pg - 334 - Harry & Madge
Quote
“So you sacrificed her for the curse this morning,” I spat.
“No, he didn’t,” Madge said in a quiet, rather chillingly conversational tone. “I did."

SF - Pg 260 - Harry
Quote
Victor was still out there, out at his lake house, he still had a hank of my hair, and he was still planning on ripping my heart out as soon as he possibly could, when the storm gave him the strength he needed.

Point of Contact
BR - Pg 289 - Harry
Quote
"Trace the money trail back and I’d bet you dollars to doughnuts that you’ll find that it’s Raith and that he owns Silverlight."

SF - Pg 40 - Monica Sells
Quote
“Where did he work?” I asked her...
SilverCo,” she told me. “They’re a trading company. They locate good markets for products and then advise companies where they can best spend their money.”

BR - Pg 346 - Harry & Monica
Quote
“Okay,” I said, noting that down, too. “Friends, then?”
She fretted her lip, a gesture that seemed familiar to her. “Not really. He was friends with his boss, and some people at work, but after he was fired…”

Resources
SF - Pg 236 - Monica Sells
Quote
“It was when Billy was about four that Victor found the magic. I don’t know where. But he started getting obsessed with it. He brought home books and books. Strange things."

SF - Pg 39 - Monica Sells
Quote
“Yes. He had been buying books on it in the religion section at the bookstore."

BR - Pg 174 - Harry & Thomas
Quote
“What about your dad? He know any magic?”
“Like maybe entropy curses?” Thomas shrugged. “I hear stories about things he’s done in the past. Some of them must be close to true. Plus he’s got a huge library he keeps locked up most of the time."
