DF Spoilers / Re: Drakul Odin Demonreach Hades Queens or
« on: December 22, 2021, 12:55:36 PM »
Uriel would be able to defeat Harry by unmaking the whole planet, but would be at risk if actually on the island.

I suspect many others have similar risks; stirring up Lake Michigan so the island floods would probably kill Harry, and even the Ladies could probably pull that (at least Molly could freeze large water bodies), but going into Harry's reach means you've mitigated most of such 'nuclear' options.

And of course, Harry is a mortal, so he has some advantages like circle traps. I wonder if Harry could use the island to empower a circle with his will, trapping anything overly supernatural. Odin or Drakul might be able to step out or smudge it for being just mortal-world enough, but not if they're wanting to go high-stakes magic combat right after (I assume, at least, that Odin has ways to store his powerups for later use outside of his person). Anyone else able to fight Harry on the island would definitely not be able to do it.

Well, except Lara could probably convince the US military to test some high-grade ordinance on that good-for-nothing empty island in the lake, why not?

DF Spoilers / Re: Harry should have trusted Ramirez
« on: December 17, 2021, 09:42:04 PM »
Mac isn't,but that is beside the point,I actually think the more interesting, and maybe important question is why do Michael and Mac,oh and throw Sanya in there as well, trust him? Shiro was willing to die horribly in his place and trust him with the custody of a Holy Sword, Michael turned his over as well.  It was Michael who convinced Harry he wasn't, when Harry was beginning to believe everyone else was right, that he was a monster.  Rashid is into trust but verify, but mostly he trusts Harry.  Listen's to Wind also seems to trust Harry, Eb is his grandfather, I also think Eb might be a bit clueless about him as well. So is it inside information or what?

Well. I don't know if it is Inside Information, anymore, but there certainly was back when Harry met Shiro and Sanya - they came to stop him from interfering because he'd die. Harry, stupid/brave/noble self-sacrificer that he is, stepped in to protect them. That move, risking himself to save others, is what made his reputation - and what got him Swords (next to of course the following period where he kept being nobly self-sacrificing).

Ah, you might say, what of Winter? But Michael knows more than just this - he knows that Harry had a Denarian in his head and still never cracked.
What temptation an icy queen, when he has resisted a temptress who was there when the first mortal drew the first breath? Michael is not overly concerned, and rightly so; but very few other people know Harry has resisted the strongest temptation the world has to offer.

DF Spoilers / Re: Outer Gates and cup of coffee.
« on: December 17, 2021, 09:32:17 PM »
The whole move together with Mother Summer implies to me that Faerie is ridiculously large. Else Harry could just find a route himself.

Or perhaps it's rather disjointed, with MS teleporting Harry along a particular route, Winter/Summer having alternative shortcuts that only the Fae take.

In either case, I would suspect the NN extends sideways a whole lot. We know Hades has a realm that touches reality, but I suspect it doesn't touch the Gates. When Ferrovax wants to Dragon around he probably has his demesne in the NN too.

So... Faerie and some others border reality. Faerie is big and mighty so it also extends to the Outer Gates. Others are wimpy so border only reality, and no doubt several realms usually don't really border reality, but can be shifted there by strong beings who haven't been Oblivioned (or by humans connecting with them).

DF Spoilers / Re: How powerful is Ivy getting?
« on: November 29, 2021, 08:01:29 PM »
That was Luccio's point, how dangerous an emotional vessel can be.  It isn't that Ivy should get out of the way, but more like she is "Spock like" when she uses and wields the Archive.
Ah I missed we had sidestepped the power discussion there. In that case I don't agree with Luccio, but I see the point. 'The Warrior' told me being a hamfisted person trying to do good is better than detachment, at least in this world.

Though I still suspect the sheer amount of data being pumped into the Archive is bound to have an effect. Sure most of it is just noise or repetition, but the flow of information is increasing too.

DF Spoilers / Re: How powerful is Ivy getting?
« on: November 28, 2021, 08:58:53 PM »

I really don't think it is a matter of how powerful Ivy is getting, the Archive always had that power.
The issue has always been of Ivy controlling her emotions and letting the Archive doing what it needs to do.  I think that is what Luccio was getting at when she warned Harry about treating Ivy like a normal little girl at the end of Small Favor.

The Archive must inherently be conservative - after all it's fighting a war that takes centuries / millennia. What Harry was doing is push it/her to be active NOW, which is a risk, but comes with way more power expenditure.

So if Ivy gets out of the way and only the Archive acts, it will be careful to extricate itself from situations where she can show her power. But when Ivy acts, she stands up and shows what the Archive can really unleash in terms of direct power, as she did at the aquarium.

(the more subtle power of information, that probably works better in Archive-mode)

DF Spoilers / Re: Is Murphy truly dead
« on: November 18, 2021, 09:52:57 PM »
So to sum up the original point, as I see it:

Murphy chose the morality of the Einherjar - face evil with a sword in hand and your love behind. That she did, many times.
The morality of TWG is to face human evil with love in your hand, and steel in your soul (the soulless evil can take a hike, apparently). That she didn't do as easy.

So while she did not choose after death to go be an einherjar, she chose it in LIFE. She chose to face Nick, with Sword in one hand, but not love in the other - perfect Einherjar, imperfect Holy Knight. She stood to defend Harry from Nick. And when the Jotuns came, though she shouldn't have, she stood with rocket launcher in hand and Harry behind. Perfect Einherjar, no points either way on the Knight scale.

And of course, at time TWG and his agents act as avenging angels instead, as at CI, or Michael after Nicks definitive refusal to repent in the vault. So they are not strangers entirely to the Einherjar mentality... which is why Uriel doesn't obliterate Odin for snatching souls, but has tea with him and discusses when a bared blade is more useful than an armed missionary.
Odin probably disagrees with Uriel on that, but when you have a universe-unmaker who disagrees with you but lets you do your thing... well even an Einherjar might make nice and be polite.

DF Spoilers / Re: Two thoughts on the timing of Mab's wedding announcement.

Perhaps the fusion is that a male from Raith, and female from McCoy were joined, and now a male from McCoy and a female from Raith will be joined.
And a few generations down the line, poof, Kwisatz Haderach ;)

DF Spoilers / Re: Marcone the Informant
« on: October 24, 2021, 09:03:08 AM »
So one of my favourite theories is the reason Marcone has no trouble from local law enforcement is because he's made a deal on a government level.

It's happened before with senior Mob bosses.

What Marcone offers however is much more valuable as an informant then just organised crime activity. Marcone can inform on The Unseelie Accords and other supernatural powers.

Thats invaluable information for the US Government or even other World Governments.

Not to mention it just makes Marcone more powerful which he's always trying to increase.

Discuss.

When did it happen?

That is to say - I think if we go back far enough  with it happening, we should have seen SOME vague hint. I could buy we haven't heard if he flipped to informing around Changes or so, and totally buy it if he sent out feelers after Batlle Ground (I mean Harry spelled out that there'd be government agents watching the supernatural), but if he was there way back in Fool Moon? Nah.

I thought Mab was too much the romantic, not too much the creep :p

Far more fitting if Harry is descended from an earlier child of one of Mab's lovers.

DF Spoilers / Re: Meaning of the Name "Harry" in Hebrew. . .
« on: October 23, 2021, 05:53:22 PM »
Princess Buttercup is a very sweet and pretty mostly yellow Lab mix.. She and her two sisters were dumped at the side of the road at about four months of age. All three were full of ticks and dehydrated before someone too pity and picked them up.  She loves babies and children in general, she is also a decent cadaver dog with I can get her to concentrate.  Mr Harry Barry, is very much like our Harry Dresden, as an American Lab he is tall and leggy, had LOTS of energy, very vocal, very loving, he is my cuddle pup, very sensitive, he is also a fantastic area search dog, he only knows one speed though, very fast..

I get who Harry was named after Harry Houdini, and David Copperfield as well, it has been said often enough.  But I also agree with Mab about coincidences.. Interesting origins of names..

Molly ;
sea of bitterness
Molly (also spelled Molli or Mollie) is a diminutive of the Hebrew feminine name Mary. It may less commonly be used as a diminutive for popular feminine names that begin with M, such as Margaret, Martha, Martina or Melinda. It most commonly means “sea of bitterness”, “star of the sea”, or “rebelliousness/rebellion”.

That fits her, especially the rebellious part.

Carlos means "free man."

Michael means;
who is like God?
Origin: The name Michael is of Hebrew origin and means “who is like God?” or “gift from God.” It is found in the Old Testament, notably in the Book of Daniel.

Uriel means;
angel of light
u-riel. Origin:Hebrew. Popularity:922. Meaning:angel of light; flame of God.

Ebenezer means;
stone of help
History and Etymology for ebenezer
Hebrew ebhen hā-ʽezer stone of help; from the application of this name by Samuel to the stone which he set up in commemoration of God's help to the Israelites in their victory over the Philistines at Mizpah
Thomas means twin.. He isn't Harry's twin, but I am thinking what Harry saw in their soul gaze, Thomas and his very human mirror.
Just odd that the meanings for the most part of the names of the characters fit the character.  Jim does a lot of research, it seems like he may have taken the meaning of their names into account.

And Karrin/Katherine means Pure. John (of Marcone) means 'graced by God' or 'God is gracious'.

So yeah, some of them fit pretty perfectly, but the twice-divorced gritty detective and actual crimelord having these names inspires me to think it's not all worked out ;)

(also I associate Harry with Henry/Heinrich = Home Ruler from Germanic, or Harold = Army commander, again from Germanic... not sure how the Hebrew comes in)

Or maybe Corb is making fun of her disguise, rather than an impossibly beautiful Fae lady Mab was disguising as a pimply lass, and Corb is saying noone was fooled.

DF Spoilers / Re: Mother Winter Blackstaff Back
« on: October 08, 2021, 03:39:06 PM »
I think it's the other way around.

Sure, she's grumpy about not being able to walk - but with the blackstaff out in the world, it is active, bringing death and suffering to the world she can't walk in. She'd probably shatter mundane reality just by glaring, nevermind when amassing the magic oomph to drag a satellite onto a mansion.

DF Spoilers / Re: Could a Dragon hit Arctis Tor?
« on: October 01, 2021, 05:16:40 PM »
Or a Holy Knight or two, let's not forget that Michael killed a dragon to save Charity.
They might indeed show up, and the Dargons still left no doubt have noticed that in general they must be careful, but it's not who you expect to face when attacking Arctis Tor - even as a Dragon. Everyone else in the world would probably react if you did it, though, because blowing up Winter has massive repercussions (similar to how kinda everyone did care when a Titan went off the rails, even if to various levels).

Mab and her armies, and possibly Mother Winter and Summer, those are the things you can't avoid facing.

DF Spoilers / Re: Could a Dragon hit Arctis Tor?
« on: September 30, 2021, 07:15:56 PM »
I think a Dragon would trigger Mab calling back not just her guard, but some of those 40,000-faerie-strong formations round about the outer gates.

And at 10's of thousands plus Mab to one, it might not be so easy, especially when the Mothers take notice.

DF Spoilers / Re: Wedding day ideas
« on: September 27, 2021, 07:25:23 PM »
Mab is smart enough to know that an alliance between the (now) most powerful vampire court and Winter, starring a wizard that has pissed off the White Council and the Svartalves and the Baron of Chicago, is not going to be popular.

I don't think she's going to go out of her way to antagonize anyone. I think the existence of the alliance will be enough. And honestly, I'm not even sure she'll attend. I could easily see her letting Lea attend her godson's wedding, which would mean she'd be at the Gates.

She won't antagonize, but she doesn't take disrespect.

And running this kind of alliance through a secretive laid-back affair without Mab's presence would also cast doubt on the strength of the alliance. Does Mab really mean it, or is she discarding Harry by passing him to Lara? If she shows, it's clear, but if she avoids it...

Of course that presupposes she really means it; she sent some mixed messages in my mind - similar to getting Molly sent to a party to blow things open, only for Lea to basically remark 'blowing it up' was predicted... so sending Molly to organize this gig for Harry, that's basically Mab saying 'I want this blown open spectacularly, probably to pay Lara back for imprisoning those dewdrop faeries'.
