DF Spoilers / Re: White Council Top Members
« on: September 16, 2021, 05:46:53 PM »
In sheer lift a big rock style magical horsepower, I’d put Harry in the top 15 wizards. That’s not the same question as most dangerous in a fight, though.
Though true that it's not the same thing...

I still would put Harry darn high there. He has fought a duel with Ortega and Arianna (sp?), survived an altercation with a Titan, fought to catch the Wild Hunt... he isn't quite on Morgan's level, but he's dangerous.

And worst of all, he might actually use magic to kill outright if he's not paying attention or feels sufficiently threatened.

DF Spoilers / Re: Will Harry change his approach to magic now?

Harry hasn't bothered to learn anything new or grow since pre-Changes, so no, I don't see his starting now.

If anything, he'll start leaning into being a thug even more, since everyone out-skills him so much that he can't hope to catch up, so better keep developing his Thews instead.

The man is the living embodiment of "Fight Harder, not Smarter"

Cold Days spells out his training - Mab forced him to train magic-without-props, mind-only. If that isn't a skill about fighting smarter...

I think, as we saw with Harry's discussion with Hades, that Butcher considers a lot of the Greek Pantheon... immature.  I mean look at all the stuff Zeus did.  He might have been powerful at one time, but he sure wasn't full of foresight like Odin.  We might be seeing what happens when a God doesn't play their cards as well as Odin.  On the other hand, they aren't asleep like a lot of the old gods, and seem to be able to be fully active in the physical world without "breaking it" like the dragons and the like need to worry about, so maybe they've accepted the downgrade in power for a reason - to still be able to effect the physical world.  But if they were doing that for much of a good reason you would think they would be signatories of the accords and present to help out in Chicago, so who knows.  Also, we know some members of the Pantheon (Hecate-Mab) wear different mantles, so we might be seeing some interesting plays there as well.  Finally, I want to see Athena.  She should have played her cards right, and she at least started as a divine level spirit of intellect.  Love to see how that worked out, and how Zues and Harry talk about the process....

You mean a goddess of reason and strategic warfare, who had the occasional spike of human emotion, and a virginal aspect?

If Athena wasn't part of making the Faerie Queens (in her case, the Winter side) I don't know who was ;)

I do agree that it's more fancy demi-gods who'd fit, like Hercules or Diomedes, rather than proper gods like Athena or Zeus.

But then there are plenty Pantheons with gods of the joy/madness of battle like Ares, who'd love senseless slaughter but would be happy with senseless non-lethal violence in between.

40% done Olympian Affair and expecting to finish Twelve Months by January? January of 2022? I wasn't expecting that kind of speed anymore.
It's always possible he really wated to write Twelve Months. Motivation seems to be a massive booster of writing speed for many authors.

DF Spoilers / Re: Has Justine Been Faking It All Along?
« on: August 15, 2021, 09:45:27 PM »
I'm just not buying that True Love (caps deliberate) could be created by an Outsider. I believe it wouldn't know how, far too human a thing. So at least at the point where True Love was triggered, Justine was still fundamentally herself.

Granted, the Thomas case makes clear a background infection that isn't a full possession can still experience True Love. So Justine could, I suppose, have been a sleeper agent; infected but not modified much.

Well given all the C names:

Coalition Obfuscating and Unseeing Random Threats, COURT

Cabal Obfuscating and Utilizing Nameless Critters Including Lawyers, COUNCIL

(seriously, the bar ain't high given Marvel's standards, poked fun at in Agents of SHIELD)

The were wyldfae at that time.
Sure, but Mab and Titania seem to consider wyldfae a bit like the White Council considers humans: not strictly theirs, but they have a vested interest. So you can bargain with one wyldfae, or murder a couple, but when you go after them in job lots, Mab and Titania will take an interest.

I also think Mab wants a 'handle' on Lara, even disregarding any nefarious desires in Lara's direction. Lara is a rising star, after decades of the WCV's being a passive player. Mab wants to be in on the ground before they become a power that is too big to handle, and Harry's just the guy to keep them from going haywire (remember that other vampire court that got uppity around him?). And if Lara truly is fond of Harry, he also solidifies Mab's alliance.

I'm really hoping Ziusudra is the founder and leader of the Librarians. I think he'd be perfect for it.
  • He's immortal.
  • He's human with no known powers.
  • Historically, he helped humanity survive a divine-based apocalypse.
  • He was the last of a line of Sumerian kings.
  • Sumerians all but invented civilization and writing.
  • Two of the oldest surviving texts mention him by name. One is a guide from his father on how to rule; the other is the Epic of Gilgamesh, where he's mentioned as an immortal that Gilgamesh seeks out in his own quest for immortality.
  • He could be an amalgamation character in the Dresden files, and Harry could meet him and learn at the end that he's also known as Atrahasis, Utnapishtim, and Noah.
  • As an immortal, he could have overseen the creation and relocation of the greatest libraries in history, moving a collection from place to place, until it ended up in America.
  • He could have overseen the growth of the earliest empires, and the wonders they built, from the gardens of Babylon to the pyramids of Egypt to the lighthouse of Alexandria.
  • The library could be the latest incarnation of a long list he oversaw, including the libraries of Ashurbanipal, Alexandria, Pergamum, Trajan's Forum, Constantinople, the Baghdadian House of Wisdom, and finally the museums of the west.

If he is a Sumerian character, I think we can't blame the Pyramids on him. The pyramids predate the fall of Sumeria as a civilization. Though, I suppose he could have left Sumeria and just have given them writing, then moving to Egypt to go Pyramid-building.

It's also interesting to see that Maeve sings solo at the end, "And many more." She might have really wanted that, if she thought she could turn him. Or she might not have, and lied in song in front of everyone.  :o
I think that lie would appeal to JB.

I think it all rests on understanding if Molly really was clueless.

I think, fundamentally, Mab gambled better than Maeve there - Molly is a good Lady, even if she has a learning curve.

Vlad II Drakul is also a bad fit for the previous starborn cycle, which has to have been in the early 1300's where Vlad II was a boy in 1395 (counting 1970-666 gives 1304; not sure I remember Harry's birth year, but definitely not right for a boy of 1395).

But their collective sacrifices did weaken Ethniu and removed the eye from her, then Harry with Marcone's help was able to whisk her away to prison..  What to your mind would have worked better?Yes, a better plan, which you haven't demonstrated so far.
How about beating Ethniu when she stood against three immortals? How much did those mortal punks really tire her out in comparison?

Was he? Amazing isn't it, that he managed to mutter the exact right word, at the exact right time. That is why I mentioned "rope a dope,"  if you are a boxing fan, and even if you aren't most people have heard of the strategy of the late great Mohamed Ali in the latter years of his boxing career.  He'd lean back on the ropes for several rounds, yes, take a lot of punishment, it would even look like he was losing, but then when the time was right, he'd deliver the knock out punch.  I'm thinking that Odin played rope a dope with Ethniu, and when she thought she had the upper hand, he delivered the knock out punch.

It's possible, but, I don't think he wanted that. Having a failsafe in case plan A fails is a bit different than 'lose my spear' being his plan.

That said, it IS intriguing that Chicago has 2 Swords and a Denarian on standby when a Titan comes knocking, and the third Sword coming in on time - almost as if the Angels (Fallen or not) did have sufficient foresight to predict a threat of this magnitude, and prepared for it. Almost makes you wonder if Lucy cheated in SF just to allow Uriel to upgrade his pawn to a Knight for this fight, though that may be attributing too much collusion.

Granted, Odin did have quite a bunch of Einherjar and 2 Valkyries ready to roll in Chicago too, so he can't have been completely unprepared.
