DF Spoilers / Modern Memes and Harry's magic
« on: March 22, 2018, 10:13:43 PM »
One of the themes of the series is that the white council wizards are conservative old biddies who are having difficulty adapting to the changing world.  Harry being the exception.  The classic is Harry mocking Morgan for creating the 'star wars rip-off" hologram of the world to show danger spots.

So my question is this.  What "very modern" element of the world should Harry leverage in his next magical innovation.  Cutting edge science?  Leapfrog off a technology?  Cultural ah-ha?

My personal item would be Harry creating a magical sensor using a cell phone case -- so it basically looks like he is taking selfies while actually doing a detailed scan of the magical nature of the area.    Or alternately, using cell phones "connectivity" to provide a structure to a complex spell that needs to effect a very large area.

DF Spoilers / Major Opens in the Series
« on: February 14, 2018, 05:48:36 PM »
This talk of Peace Talks got me thinking.  There are a lot of big opens outstanding that have to be answered in the next five books.  Here is my personal list

Political Questions
1) What is the Grey Council and how does it work.  How will Harry work with the Grey Council?
2) What is happening with the Paranet and how is it evolving?
3) How will the White Council/Harry/Paranet deal with the threat posed by the Formor.  How will that threat evolve?
4) How are the other supernatural races going to get pulled into the conflict?  We know the outsiders want them distracted, so some level of involvement (if only hiding) is going to happen.
5) What has happened to the White Council?   How is it functioning (or not) right now?
6) What will happen between with the cooperative agreement between Marcone, the White Court and the Paranet to defend Chicago?
7) What is the next stage in the Outsiders' plan of attack?  Presume it is the Formor or maybe the dragon, but that is just guesses?
8 )  What is happening internally with the Fallen?  Are they going to have their own civil war pitting Nik's side vs outsider allied side vs other fallen strongly aligned with neither?
9) Will Summer closely cooperate with Winter or stay isolated now that the Outsider's play is obvious (at least to Mab)?

Personal Questions
1) How is Harry and Molly's relationship going to evolve?
2) What will be Harry's new home and lifestyle be in Chicago? Is he going to find an apartment and go back to being a detective or will it be something very different
3) How will the relationship between Harry and Mab evolve?
4) what will happen when Michael finds out Molly is the Winter Lady?
5) what consequences will there be for Harry within the White Council for his actions in Changes - destroying the Red Court, becoming Winter Knight?
6) Role of Murphy going forward:  Lover?  Marriage?  Advisor?  Politician?  Other?
7) Toot is evolving into someone different -- a comrade perhaps rather than simply a helpful sidekick.

Magic Stuff
1) Those holy relics he got from Hades tomb
2) the relic that Nik has (the cup)
3) the progress/scope/impact of nemfection
4) Harry is supposed to get trained in shapeshifting
5) Will there be a new Knight of the Cross soon?
6) Harry keeps recruiting more fey minions.  How big will his army get?
7) Will harry be able to imprison people into Demonreach who are not on the island.

DF Spoilers / New Relations and Kumori
« on: February 14, 2018, 12:34:48 AM »
Coincidence is one of the classics of fiction.  And a common coincidence is that person X is really an unknown blood relation of Y (someone very different) -- with that connection discovered at some dramatic moment.

Of course, JB has used this already with Thomas, but I think there is another good prospect that has not been explored: Kumori.    All the speculation around Kumori is around "which female character introduced in the series is really Kumori".   I have to admit that none of the theories seemed very probable to me.  I agree that there is some connection there, but I think we are asking the wrong question.   I want to change the question to:  "Who among the people Harry knows is Kumori related to? "

When you ask the question that way, you get an easy answer loaded with all sorts of strong emotional connections with Dresden and many of Dresden's allies.      Well you get two answers.

1) Dresden's older sister would obviously have the most powerful effect on Dresden himself.   We also have had some foreshadowing that other siblings might exist.   This is not my favorite simply because it was done before with Thomas.  JB does not repeat things often.

2) Charity has a powerful magical bloodline.   If she had a sister or close cousin who did receive magical training (aka - Kumori), that would also create a very powerful connection to Harry, Michael, Charity, Molly/Winter Lady, and indirectly to all the other human allies of Dresden.  It is a connection that the Outsiders would have every incentive to leverage against Dresden.  It is also a connection that is likely to blindside Harry simply because he trusts the Carpenters so much.   This idea has possibilities!  :)

DF Spoilers / How would a new mantle be created
« on: October 19, 2017, 10:13:07 PM »
It is a given that new mantles can be created.   this is proved by the fact that we have Santa  Clause - a clearly recent invention - as a mantle held by Odin.

What might such a new mantle look like.   I can speculate on some aspects
1) Mantles are tied to belief in some way   That is why so many mantles are tied to old gods.    Belief is also tied into the power of the Fey as evidenced by Mab's encouragement of the brothers grim fairy tales.   Belief is also tied into the ability to manifest into this world - as evidenced by the Oblivion war sidebars that show up in short stories.     However, many examples of mantles continuing after belief has waned, so not clear how important belief is in maintaining the power of a mantle.

2) Mantles represent people -- the are personifications of a belief.   A mantle is not "gift giving", it is Santa Claus.

3) Mantles require volume.   Lots of people have to believe for a sizable block of time.   There is no direct evidence of this, but it is logical.  The world is not buried in Mantles after all, so there must be a hard threshold that must be met.

4) I wonder if a mantle can be deliberately created -- for example by a Norse god wanting to shelter some of his waning god-power.  He might break off a piece and "empower" a mantle for something meaningful in this new age - like Santa Claus.  That act might be required or it might simply speed the process up.

Speculation on possible modern mantles
*  I think I can rule out super heroes, movie characters, or similar creations of pop culture.  People simply do not believe they are real.

*  I think I can also rule out most conspiracy theories where belief is widespread and intense from the mantle creation possibility because they typically describe vague hidden forces rather than specific individuals.

*  You might get a religious figure (the pope, etc), but these are not normally seen as "more than human" in that sense at least.

*  You could have the "hidden special person" type mantle.  The mysterious figure in hiding from the modern world.   This could be the Dali Lama, Elvis, or Marylyn Monroe.   All it takes is a lot of people believing "they are still out there in hiding".    But you have the same problem as with the Pope.   Simply because they are hiding does not make them a figure of great and mysterious power -- which is what mantles provide.

*  I could see "Murphy" as a mantle that is created.   Murphy as in Muprhy's Law, not Karin Murphy :).  Many people believe and it is a personification of somewhat great and mysterious power.

Other ideas?

And before anyone mentions it, i will acknowledge that it is possible that the total "pool of power" available to mantles could be fixed.   New mantles could simple be some portion of some old obsolete mantle refashioned into a new mantle.  After all, there are almost certainly mantles so old that they have lost meaning (and thus potentially vanished...).  However, for purposes of this question it does not matter if mantles are created new - or out of the "dust" of old obsolete mantles.   The key point is that "new" mantles can exist.

DF Spoilers / Mirror Mirror Knights of the Cross
« on: October 10, 2017, 03:06:30 PM »
Ok Uriel saw to it that Harry had possession of one of the Swords at the end of Death Masks and another at the end of Small Favor.  However, the Harry in the Mirror Mirror world was already on a darker path at this time.  Would Uriel have seen this and NOT given Harry the swords?

If so, then there could very well be three knights of the sword in the Mirror Mirror world.   Presumably Sanya is one.  The others might be new characters.  I do not see Butters getting there without Harry's encouragement and I do not see Karin being a knight while dealing with the emotions of Harry going dark.    Anybody else as an obvious candidate?   I kinda like Georgia as a candidate as she is somewhat of an underutilized character and a genuinely good person.

PS:   My own believe is that dark harry believes he is doing the right thing through dark means.  As such, he would avoid his former allies as he would not want to hurt them.   Harry is LOYAL to his friends.   This means that there is a good chance that Harry's friends are going to be still around in the mirror mirror world.   Not really friends anymore to the dark harry, but around.

My guess is that Dark Harry is now sufficiently dark that he would kill his old friends if they got in the way, but enough remains that he still "tries" to avoid situations where they would be in the way.  But Harry's old friends are probably under no illusions about how dark "dark harry" has become.

DF Spoilers / What will Harry Learn
« on: October 09, 2017, 09:25:51 PM »
One of the patterns in the book is that Harry learns.
*  When Harry got an apprentice, you started to see a clear impact in his spellcraft 2-3 books later.
*  When Harry got the winter knight gig, you started to see a clear impact in his spellcraft 3-4 books later (ghost story delayed things...)
*  Harry learned some things from the coin (shielding his mind for example, pain blocking)
*  Harry learned some from turn coat (mind fighting...)

But there are a couple of major events that have not really lead to any significant learning.
*  Harry operated as a ghost for a while in ghost story
*  Harry bonded with Demonreach.

Harry certainly learned how to operate Demonreach, but he has not applied anything he learned from Demonreach to his own personal magical or personal development.   Ditto with the time as a ghost.  No significant change in Harry's magic came from that experience - YET.

Some possibilities
1) Demonreach should have taught Harry a lot about crafting shields and wards -- or about the nature of immortal beings
2) Ghost Story should have taught Harry a lot about ghosts, spirits and how to work with the same.    He should also have more insight on possession --- and insight into the powers of illusion that he learned from Molly at this time.

DF Spoilers / What does the Merlin want out of Peace Talks
« on: September 25, 2017, 08:57:07 PM »
Ok we know the next book is Peace Talks, which is basically about the Peace Talks to end the Supernatural WWIII pitting the White Council, Fellowship (mostly dead), Ventori, Winter, Summer against the alliance of the Red Court (mostly dead), White court, Black Court and no doubt some other unofficial allies like the (ahm) black council.

The lay members of the White Council, especially the older ones, probably just want the war to end as quickly as possible.   They have no interest in continuing to fight and (collectively) little thought of the aftermath beyond some agreements to avoid a future war in the next few decades.

What does the Merlin want?   A few books ago, I would say he is agreement with the above.  Seeing him in Changes, he was pretty militant.
a) Is he going to go with a quick end to the war -- aka how we ended WWI by laying the groundwork for WWII

b) Is he going to go with a careful/prepared conclusion that might take longer, but leaves the White Council in a far stronger position and with solid allies  (aka - how we ended up WWII), but with well established enemies like the black/white court still quite powerful.

c) Is he going to want to keep the war going until he can exterminate the black or white vampire court (or both).  Total victory in other words - while he has the alliance of Winter and Summer as allies.  After all, these two great supernatural powers may not be allies in the next war.

2nd question - what about the Formor and other supernatural nations that did not fight in the war, but now insist on having a pieces of the spoils and/or seat at the table.   Will he welcome their presence (unlikely!) or fight their involvement fiercely or moderately oppose, but not spend his political capital on this fight.

DF Spoilers / Fellowship and Formor
« on: September 11, 2017, 11:31:58 PM »
The fellowship was described in Changes as a organization that recruited from the supernatural renegades/loners/refugees - language not super dissimilar from what was used to describe the Formor.  Certainly the two groups are different organizations.  But it is possible that there was regular contact between the two organizations, perhaps even shared operations and/or occasional cooperation.

Normally this would be a non-issue, but the Formor are clearly in the enemy camp right now.  I can totally see a book where Dresden needs to get into one of the Formor aquatic cities and rescue someone and/or free a bunch of prisoners and/or disrupt something important.   Information in that scenario would be of vital importance.   Dresden can track down a former member of the fellowship for that info.   The fellowship was not, after all, entirely made up of half vampires.  They had other supernatural members who are probably still around.   Not sure of this individual would hate Dresden or love him (or probably both) for what happened in Changes.  But it could make a very good and tension filled story.

DF Spoilers / Magical Architect
« on: September 06, 2017, 05:41:01 PM »
Ok You are Harry Dresden and you are going to spend 200K on a brand new house for yourself.   You picked a prime location that is at the convergence of three helpful ley lines, away from innocent bystanders most times, in a part of Chicago that is easily accessible and covers a half acre lot (so plenty of room, but not ridiculous like the Marcone or White court mansions).   There is already a long occupied house on the lot that can be heavily remodeled, but still retain "most" of the threshold benefit that the house had accumulated.    (ie - location is nearly perfect).

What are the key elements of the design?   Assume you are Dresden's architect and are designing him the right house.

Obvious Bits
1) The house will be built of thick stone or similar sturdy material that is not flammable.
2) Doors will be heavily reinforced security type doors - although not obviously so
3) Good wood burning stoves provide central heat and/or the basics of a stove/oven in the kitchen
4) Good spacious underground basement for the laboratory
5) The lot will be surrounded by a 5' tall brick or stone wall that will (slightly) slow down attackers, keep out ghosts, and give some degree of privacy so neighbors are not easily annoyed by the zombies attacking
6) the place will look like a residence, not a fortress.
7) multiple guest rooms
8) Big freezer to hold the pizza

DF Spoilers / When is a Story not a Story?
« on: August 10, 2017, 10:19:13 PM »
Sometimes a short story is just a fun story the author wished to tell.   And sometimes a short story is a sneaky way for the author to introduce factoids and back story that will become important in a later “main” story.  For this thread, I am going to assume JB is being sneaky.

JB has written several short stories since Skin Game and I am guessing he is using these stories to lay some groundwork.  This thread is devoted to guessing what those clues and factoids are.   If I remember correctly, we have the following short stories
•   Molly story where she travels to Alaska as Winter Lady
•   Luccio story set in the wild west
•   Butters story about a visit to the Zoo

While I have not yet read the last two, I have read the first.  It introduced several interesting factoids
1)   The Winter Lady Mantle protects winter secrets, forcing Molly to speak sexy banter instead of speaking plainly or revealing winter secrets
2)   The Winter Lady cannot have intercourse – not clear if this is pregnancy or if she must remain a virgin (technically). The Mantle will protect this.
3)   The WL is tasked, among other things, with ensuring the supply of Winter soldiers continues so that the outer gates are properly defended.   As such she is in communication with many wild fae groups that have agreements with Winter.
4)   Carlos’ area of responsibility is very wide if he covers LA to Alaska.  That implies very few wardens in America.
5)   Carlos was badly injured – and thus may not be present during Peace Talks.
6)   Old gods keep trying to get back into our world (not a new factoid)

I can see #1 or #3 applying (potentially) to events in Peace Talks either in the sexualized banter Molly will surprise Harry with and/or the contacts Molly will have with attendees.   Conceivably #2 could be a path to attack the winter lady as well, if the White or Red Court vamps were attacking her.  #4 probably explains why there will be relatively few wardens at the peace talks.

Other hints and foreshadowing that might come from the short stories?

DF Spoilers / Why Attack Arctus Tor?
« on: August 08, 2017, 11:51:58 PM »
In Proven Guilty, someone attacked Arctus Tor.  They killed a lot of fey.  They left traces of hellfire.  Key questions:
*  Who attacked?
*  Why did they attack?

Second Key Question - why did they survive (if you believe they survived)?  Presumably Mab is fully capable of defending her realm and is a frigging nightmare.   Mother Winter is an order of magnitude more dangerous even without her staff and presumably could do the same thing.   Almost inconceivable that Mab could not "hold them off" long enough to summon ten thousand winter fey guardians to defend her castle.   Yet none of this happened -- or at least no obvious evidence in the books that this mega-battle occurred.

DF Spoilers / Time Travel and Mirror Mirror
« on: July 24, 2017, 09:07:22 PM »
It has been said that Harry would break all the laws of magic, but in some what that we gets away with it.   Time travel is one that still needs to be broken.

And we know in Mirror Mirror that Harry will visit a parallel universe where a dark harry exists.  This universe split off from the mainline universe at some point in the series.  Most people think around "Grave Peril"

Theory -- Maybe Crack Theory -- Harry has to use time travel to escape the Mirror Mirror Universe.   In effect, he must travel back before the universe splits.  Then travel forward in time to get back to his real time.

Arguably this is not a crime because
*) he did not travel into the past (at least in this universe)
*) he did not travel into the future-- he just returned from the past
*) his presence in the past is arguably more of a risk to the universe than his returning to his own time.
*) He can show that his presence in the past was meant to happen -- ie he fixed Little Chicago for himself - and event that "already" occurred before any of this time travel occurred.  This could even support multiple "stops" as he moves forward in time to satisfy specific "must do" items on Harry's checklist.

It feels like a neat way to fit in the Time Travel action "safely", nicely ties to Mirror Mirror Concept and potentially answers many open questions.

Thoughts?

DF Spoilers / Many Questions on Proven Guilty
« on: July 24, 2017, 08:47:24 PM »
All

I know it has been talked about before, but on many levels Proven Guilty does not make sense.  There seemed no reason for the Fetch to get involved and there are all these mysterious events at Arctus Tor.  Given this story is the prime candidate for the “time travel” experience of Harry, I wanted to poke at it.

Facts
•   “Darby” was booked a year in advance to attend the Con – by his lawyer
•   Madrigal (aka – Darby)’s lawyer/flunky was killed by the Fetch
•   Someone killed a bunch of Mab’s troll guards with Hellfire
•   Lilly and Maeve conspired to lure winter into leaving their borders to allow summer to attack the Red Court
•   Mab allowed Harry to recover Molly
•   A portal exists from the theater to Winter
•   The Fetch took Molly to Arctus Tor
•   Maeve slowed time in Winter so that winter armies would not threaten Summer for sufficient time -- such that Summer could attack the Red Court
•   The Red Court did a major attack on the White Council during the events in Proven Guilty – including targeting Luccio’s boot camp (ie – really important battle)
•   Somebody fixed Little Chicago (although this is more evidence of time travel than something relevant to the questions below)
•   Mab could NOT have sent the fetches to kill people at the con.  She is not allowed to do this due to the rules of Fey Queens.  Either someone else gave the command or the Fetches were killing on their own.

Reasonably Certain
•   The Fetch killed the lawyer to shut him up because he knew things
•   The fetch knew enough about Molly to trick her into inviting them into the house (not a high threshold, but not complete ignorance)
•   The Fetch attacked the theater owner to keep the theater closed – presumably to allow them to feely use the portal
•   Madrigal was set up for some reason – somebody (- or something ) wanted him at the con
•   Molly did her first Black magic just days (or at most weeks) before the events in Proven Guilty – as she did not discover her friend was pregnant until then.
•   Nik was surprised (and very unhappy) to learn that Denarians were involved in the attack on Arctus Tor
•   The Fetch were involved because of orders from the Queen – but which one is unclear

Decent Guesses
•   Molly’s presence could not have easily been predicted without foreknowledge.  Not assuming foreknowledge as foreknowledge is a boring answer.
•   The Fetch used the beacon that is Molly’s fear casting to enter the mortal world
•   Harry suggested Madrigal was set up to be the patsy to take the blame.  I would argue that Madrigal was set up to be the beacon.  But since Molly ended up being the beacon, Madrigal was thus unneeded.
•   Thorned Namshiel was involved in the attack on Arctus Tor
•   Nik is afraid that a fallen is nemfected
•   Maeve might have been nemfected, but not so badly that her actions were highly influenced.
•   The Fetch were there for a reason beyond killing people at a con.  They are both spies and assassins after all.  Neither mission seemed to be relevant to what they did at the con.

Questions
•   Which queen gave orders to the Fetches – or was the Fetch acting on their own?
•   If Madrigal was set up a year in advance, why.  I cannot have been related to Molly’s use of black magic or the battle with the Red Court as neither could have been reliably predicted a year in advance.    If he was set up from the begining, it had to be for another reason.
•   Was the portal to winter always in the theater --- or did someone create the portal for this purpose?  The first might suggest a longer term plot while the second might suggest it was created by a Winter queen.
•   Why did Mab not destroy those who killed her guards?
•   Did slowing time in Winter serve some other (less obvious) purpose?
•   When did Maeve and Lilly learn about the attack on the White Council?   Well in advance or only during the events in Proven Guilty?
•   What else is going on that might justify time travel?

DF Spoilers / Mirror Mirror Opportunties
« on: July 17, 2017, 08:55:53 PM »
The plot of Mirror Mirror sounds like a good story idea, but it also sounds like a great way to give Harry advance notice of information about his own world that he would otherwise not know.   It gives him an edge in future books.

Example #1:  What if Harry got involved (during mirror mirror) with the government agency focused on the supernatural.  He would find out some of their leaders, some contact information, locations and maybe who their local "man" on the street is -- which by the way I think is Stallings... :)

Then in some future book, Harry can just call their chief of operations by name and number and demand assistance.   He gets to freak them out (how did he know???), give off all sorts of "I am a wizard and I have mysterious sources of knowledge" vibes and get some great verbal moments.  Something similar to when he messed with one of the einjaren at Marcone's place at the end of Skin Game -- using knowledge he gained as a ghost in Ghost Story.

Alternatively, Harry can find out some secret about his companions.  Maybe one is sick or has an unusual relative.

Alternately, Harry can identify one of his companions as nemfected, with obvious implications.

Any other good opportunities for Harry to gain knowledge in Mirror Mirror in order to look Bad-Ass Wise in later books back in his own world?

DF Spoilers / Wizard Academy
« on: July 10, 2017, 11:06:51 PM »
It is pretty clear that wizards are old school.  They teach via the ancient model of apprentice/master.    But times have moved on.  We have seen with Luccio that they created a boot camp for new wardens that was quite successful.   I can see the possibility that they extend that model to create a wizard academy to more easily train wizards in larger numbers.  Something like this would be essential if Harry's ideas regarding training Paranet members is implemented.

How would such a magical academy work?  I doubt it would be very Harry Potter, but I can see something comparable to a old style college format.   A dozen different "schools" each focused on a particular discipline that combines lecture and practice.   Each taught by an expert in that type of magic.   Everybody takes the basics, but students generally continue in a specific school based on success/skill/aptitude.

They certainly do not have enough students right now to have a dozen concurrent schools taught, but they could teach a few schools every month and just alternate.   As student populations increase, they can run more classes concurrently.

The advanced classes might continue via the apprentice model - especially as the WC is still paranoid about wizards misusing their power.  They would want experienced wizards to personally evaluate candidates before teaching them advanced magical techniques.
