Site Suggestions & Support / Give Us Your Chat Policy Suggestions
« on: June 02, 2010, 04:14:18 AM »
What should the policies for the chat area be? My initial thoughts:

- PG-13 (like the rest of the board, really)
- No Touchy Topics (like the rest of the board)
- No dice in the public channel
- Keep colored text to a minimum in the public channel
- Keep your /nick changes to a minimum
- Spoiler conversations only in appropriate channels

What else?

Site Suggestions & Support / What are the Pub's Positive Patterns?
« on: May 29, 2010, 01:40:38 PM »
So while we are planning on bringing the pub (MacAnally's) back in some form, we're likely to reorient it all on what this forum site's mission should be about: positivity, celebration, fandom, community.

Things like the angst corner (and the already retired touchy topics area) are going to go away. We saw that instead of creating a quarantine effect, those sorts of areas encouraged bad, contentious behavior. They sanctioned the idea that bitching and anger and itchy trigger fingers were okay here. They're not.

But there is something good we can take away from that lesson. If subject areas like that are prone to encourage and expand conversations of that sort, maybe we can look at creating a few more areas specifically dedicated to the positive patterns of the pub (Media Favorites has been a success, for example). Maybe we could start a board that's an Open Mike *Comedy* Night thing. Maybe we could create an area for folks to talk about crafting topics (beadwork, scrap booking, costuming, all that sort of stuff -- I'd need to hear from folks what qualifies as crafting, as it's so totally not my scene). Maybe something to talk about games (video and tabletop).

Or maybe not. :) What I'm interested in hearing about from people is what the good/positive/awesome stuff is that forms some of the favorite conversations and behaviors at the pub. Because if we know those patterns are there, maybe we can also figure out some ways to make sure that they repeat and become the real mode of the board and of conversation rather than the dark-cloud crap that's hung over it instead.

Announcements / Server Move Coming
« on: May 28, 2010, 06:13:14 PM »
Hey folks,

We're looking at upgrading to a dedicated server sometime soon (Jimbeast Needs More RAM!). I don't have a specific timeline yet. When that happens, there may be a 'hiccup' where we lose a few hours of posts on the forum. So just be aware of that. I'll say more here when I have some actual scheduling to report.

Announcements / Spoiler Tags
« on: May 28, 2010, 01:16:35 PM »
Yes, I know, the spoiler tags went away. This happens every time I do a software upgrade. I'll get this taken care of some time today, but not sure when by.

You will be disappointed if you expect us to:

- Publicize every piece of moderation work we do. Some we prefer to deal with in private.

- Act immediately on every reported post. Some reports result in private discussion among the moderators before we take action. Some result in us enacting a policy shift (like shutting down the pub for a week) rather than singling out every person who's crossed the line. This is not favoritism; it's efficiency.

In short, moderation is not an instant service provided 24/7 by our admin staff. Nor should it be. If we acted immediately on everything, the population of this board would be a lot smaller.

On another note, when we ask people to "self-police", we mean for each of you to act individually as grown-ups and to use the "report to moderator" button when someone else does not.  We do NOT mean "say something publicly or privately directly to the offenders".  The reasons you should engage us rather than take the action yourself are many.  Your judgment call about what the root of the problem is and what needs to be done about it could be off base. The way you choose to do it could be construed as a personal attack, which turns YOU into a policy offender. Etc. In short, report problems to the authorities and let the authorities take actual action. We need you to help us achieve *visibility* into the problems, not to achieve *enforcement*. That's not your job. :)

Policies / WHITE COUNCIL DECREE: Respect Is Mandatory
« on: May 26, 2010, 05:51:31 PM »
The board moderators are not happy.

We've seen a lot of people failing to act like adults lately. We've seen aggressive behaviors and disrespectful stances taken by many. We've seen bullying and a general failure to look at things while standing in someone else's shoes.

This is not acceptable.

This stops now.

By unanimous decision of the White Council (that's Fred, Priscellie, Mickey, and Ashton), we're going to be taking some broad, sweeping action in an effort to get people to back off of all this contentiousness and really focus on contributing positively to this board and to the celebration of Jim's work. That's the mission here, and it should be your mission too.

Here's what's going to be in effect for the next week or so:

- The Pub -- i.e., MacAnally's -- is getting closed for renovations. We're going to sweep out the old threads and give the place a fresh start. This will include the sub-boards; they'll all be locked to disallow posting. We may change what sub-boards there are, we may add new ones, we may leave them as they are.

- We'll be cleaning up the joint -- As mentioned in the downsizing announcement.

- The baseball batbanhammer is on the bar.  Respect is mandatory.  People who engage in bickering, baiting, bullying, and so forth on the other boards are going to face a low or zero tolerance response from the moderators. That means we'll be more liberal than usual with temporary banning. We will do our best to explain to you why you're being given a vacation from the board, but you'll be given a vacation all the same.

We don't like having to take this kind of sweeping action, but at this point we just don't feel like people are paying attention.  You attract the Council's attention, you get a satellite pulled out of orbit and dropped on your house. That's just the way it is.

This policy will go into effect within the next 24 hours, and will last for at least one week (for the "closed for renovations" aspect).  The "banhammer" policy will likely last a few weeks longer than that.

Policies / UPCOMING: Forum Boards Get Downsized
« on: May 26, 2010, 03:31:16 PM »
Next week I am going to start getting rid of old and dead topics on the board. As things stand right now we have a ludicrous number of old postings on the forum (the nightly backup is several GB in size), and I think this plays strongly into some of the site's performance issues. Some areas will remain untouched, some will get a long window, and some will get a shorter window.  Here's how it's going to break down:

The Important and Frequently Asked Questions areas will be left untouched.

Any of the book discussion areas (Dresden Files, Codex Alera, and Other Works areas) will have a one-year window on them. Topics which have not been posted in for over a year will be deleted.

The General Chat discussion areas will have a three-month window on them. Topics which have not been posted in for over 90 days will be deleted.

We're giving folks the rest of this week to archive whatever is going to be deleted that's important to them. Also, if there's a thread in one of the book discussion areas that folks find particularly important please use the "report to moderator" feature to nominate the thread (or specific post) to get moved into our Frequently Asked Questions area. We could use some help identifying that material. We'll already be reviewing Jim's posts for the juicy stuff, though, so please do this only for stuff which *isn't* directly from Jim.

Hopefully on the other side of this we'll have a leaner board that performs better.  But regardless, we'll be transitioned to a new mode of operation that will make the forum more possible to sustain for years to come.

Policies / Forum Policy: Sexual Content
« on: May 21, 2010, 02:48:01 PM »
As Jim's novels occasionally deal with instant bliss collars and sex vampires and whatnot, we cannot reasonably ask that this board be devoid of sexual/sexualized content.

That said, we do need people to start working to keep this to a minimum.  Sex *is* a touchy topic (and we all know how touchy topics have fared on this board).

Utmost respect needs to be paid not just to the people you know you're talking to, but to the people you don't know might be reading you. That means toning it down. That means going easy on the "cat-calls". That means not using this board to get yourself some personal validation by how well you can sexually provoke other people on the board.

This goes double for anyone who is, or is interacting with, a board member who is not legally an adult. If you wouldn't talk to a random stranger at a bus stop about it, you probably shouldn't talk to the random strangers here about it either.

We do think that people who are uncomfortable with sexual content in general need to make choices about what they'll willingly expose themselves to, so this is a two-way street.  If sexual content makes you uncomfortable, don't read threads where it's a factor

What we're asking for here is for people to tone down the extremity and pervasiveness of it, not to remove it entirely from the conversation.

We don't want to have to make firmer policies. We don't want to have to take action to shut down conversations in order to improve the climate of the board. But there have been too many failures in the departments of "Think Before Posting", "No, Really, Think Before Posting", and "Get Some Freaking Therapy Already" to make it likely we'll be able to stay out of doing so.

Taking action according to the above guidelines will significantly improve your chances of not being the target of our actions when we do.

40
Again, personal attacks and direct harassment of other board members are strictly against board policy.

This includes doing so in Private Messages.

Acting like an adult (even if you're not) is the absolute bare minimum standard for participation on this board.

If you can't do that, leave.

No exceptions.

Zero tolerance.

DFRPG / A Thread Actually About Dismissing Conjurations
« on: April 26, 2010, 03:47:51 PM »
Can a spellcaster dismiss/dispel their own conjurations at will?  If not, what sort of action would it be?

(I'm thinking particularly of the case where you conjure up a dagger for the purposes of killing someone with it, and then turning the evidence into ectoplasmic goo.  Of course, if you get stopped by the cops along the way, you might want to turn it to goo right then.)

I'm pretty happy just handwaving it on the side of allowing it, but wondering if there's any explicit rules for it, or any explicit examples in the canon.

I'd make it a supplemental action at least. Though really, it's about removing the force of will that gave the object its form, so it's a lot like "stop paying attention". But I'd agree it's just a titch more deliberate than that, so supplemental action feels about right to me.

DFRPG / The Cutoff
« on: April 26, 2010, 03:06:16 PM »
I'm probably going to stop reading the message board after today as I work on the run-up to the printer this week. There's a LOT of energy getting thrown here -- some of it with a contentious rather than constructive edge to it -- and frankly taking the time to participate, respond, and where necessary fix the text is impeding my ability to get work done.

No game goes to press perfect, and this won't be an exception. I do think we've gotten it better than it would have been if it had gone to press three weeks ago when the preorder started, but some issues simply won't be resolved and -- in a few cases -- won't be viewed by Evil Hat as something that *needs* to be resolved in a general case. The tools are there to tweak the game to work for you at your table. Pursue that, with a passion, and our blessing.

But expect there to be a break from issuing Official Word on a lot of stuff because, well. We gots to get done.
