Cinder Spires Spoilers / Re: Reread

I think a prisoner working at the base of the Spire and a Warriorborn citizen might be very different.  I can imagine Warriorborn earn a good living gathering expensive surface raw materials, whereas if you were put down there as a part of a prison labor detail you wouldn't fair nearly so well.

One major downside to being Warriorborn is what appears to be a possible loss of control that can occur.

Ciriaco tells Benedict not to "let it out" after Benny growls at him.

Sycorax tells Renaldo that all the they can not expect the Warriorborn to maintain perfect poise foreve "Inevitably, the beast emerges."

After Benedict recovers from his wounds and awakens in the infirmary he is a completely different state of mind, necessitating Bridget carefully give him his food and water and make no sudden movements.

Based on all this, I have to conclude that the Warriorborn are dangerous under certain circumstances.  We don't yet have enough information but I would posit that many of them choose relatively isolated lives (Wayist Monks, labourers at the base of the spire) partly because they don't want to hurt anyone should anything go wrong.  I think that is probably one of the reasons for the aristocratic discrimination.  It's one thing to not want someone to marry into your family for their iris shape, but it is quite another to have the same reservations out of a fear they could harm or kill your loved one in a moment of stress.

With all of that, I can imagine that Benedict would resent his nature and all the otherising that comes along with it.

After learning of Cavendish and the breadth of dreadful skills, I quit believing there was a double agent involved.  Just Cavendish using her certain set of skills to aid the Aurorans.  None of the inquisitors or the Spirearch mention the possibility of the presumed spy remaining at large in the Spire during the denouement after all.

Deeeeerp.  Sorry, I guess altered my mental picture to align with the Cube comment and never realized it.

They are cubes.  The circle is within the cube, and the excess space is where things like the ventilation tunnels go.

In what way?

Scale? Regenerative properties? Shape?

They are 2 mile x 2 mile black cubes.

It's worth pointing out that there is no other term in the (US) American lexicon for ourselves.  The idea that we are the only Americans seems to be waning at least.

wyltok, Tsunami, thank you. Your posts have been very interesting and I appreciate that. Your insight about the reasons to keep reading are more or less the sane I thought, wyltok

Rygar, the Aurorans themselves that are depicted are military, so hubby and I don't care for them. The problem is that speaking of the government as unefficient and corrupted is spreading the stereotype of the Latino government (think the stereotype of the tropical country dictator). That is precisely what incensed my husband.

Yeah, and Spire Aurora doesn't (presumably) have the history of repeated foreign backed coups either.  I could see how that could upset someone.

I'd have to reread while specifically looking for this, but I remember the Aurorans themselves as being potrayed well.  Their government was depicted as corrupt and generally bad, yes, but I don't think any scenes involving the Espira and his men left me thinking of them as anything other than professionals operating at cross purposes to the protagonists.

Explain, please?

I'd venture to guess he means Ferrus becoming incapacitated at a dramatically appropriate moment and things like that.

Get in a fight.  Kind of like jokingly saying "I will literally fight you!" or something like that

Another point towards it being england

While Albion is quite obviously English in nature, there are scads of nations with those colors on their flags

Yes, I love them!
I am sure Grimm will be in the following books because of Folly's dream about the Predator. The others, I don't know I certainly hope so because i really want to read more about them.

I will throw hands if this is the last we see of Gwen and Journeyman!

I really do hope that the cast from the first book is retained throughout the series.  I liked them  :-\

There is another type of energy, etheric energy, that also flows about the world in currents.  The ship has sails, called a Web, that when powered catch this energy and propel the ship forward.  Some craft also utilize traditional wind sails as a backup propulsion method.
