DFRPG / Re: Some Thaumaturgical Questions
« on: April 15, 2010, 07:18:58 AM »
Can someone at least control my example?
Should an extreme consequence be in the calculation? (wrote condition instead of consequence in my example)

In addition Sponsored Magic can use Thaumaturgie in some cases (like Hellfire and destructive Magic) at Evocation speed.
In Thaumaturgie if the Power is below your conviction score you dont get mental stress.

DFRPG / Re: Enchanted Items Patch - Important, holy crap!

I don't know if I missed something, but don't the new rules kill the usefulness of the Frequency (Crafting) specialization for Thaumaturgy?  Why use Refinement to get a +1 to Frequency (which gives an additional use to each enchanted item) when one could get a +1 to Strength (which could be used to boost overall power for each enchanted item or be used to give one additional use)?  Shouldn't the Frequency (Crafting) specialization give 2 uses/+1 similar to the use of enchanted item slots?

For an +2 into crafting strenght you need an +1 somewhere on the Thaumaturgical side.
For an +3 into crafting strenght you need an +2 and an +1 somewhere.

If you want an superb item crafter it makes sense to give it into item freqency...

DFRPG / Some Thaumaturgical Questions
« on: April 14, 2010, 03:28:08 PM »
I'm rereading the Thaumaturgical section, and some Questions are popping up...

Quote
If the complexity of the spell is greater than your Lore, your wizard must enter a preparation stage during which he researches the spell further, assembles the necessary components, acquires additional sources of power, and finishes the spell construct.

I assume, if you do that once and need the exact same spell again (like summoning and binding the same creature again) you don’t need to research the spell again.

Should there e a rule for research between sessions? (Like Item creation.)

Quote
Inflicting a mild disease on a fairly hale target—say, Good (+3) Endurance—would be a 13 complexity spell: 7 to match the best Endurance roll possible, 4 for the target’s stress track, and 2 more for the mild consequence.

The goal is to inflict an Mild consequence right? Wouldnt a 11 complexity spell be enough, since if they dont take at least mild consequence they pass out and you can dictate the illness?

Quote
So a curse that acts as a maneuver to put Bad Luck on a target might start from “15 minutes” (about the length of that particular scene), and you could make it last all day by adding five shifts of complexity to the spell.
But only the first tag is free, right? It’s there to be invoked, but doesnt do a thing by itself.

Quote
Make Declarations
As part of preparation, you can use your skills to declare you have access…

Hmm, can a skill be used multiple times for the same ritual for different declaration?

Quote
Accept or Inflict Consequences, page 269
…Actually committing murder on a sentient being as part of a spell grants the wizard all of the shifts for all levels…

Quote
Page 248
There are various sources that a wizard can draw on to power his spells:

Unwilling magical creatures; the deliberate sacrifice of humans or animals.

First magical?
Second, how much shifts would an animal grant?
Third, sacrificing animals isnt against the law, right?

I’ll try an Containment, Summoning and Binding Ritual.
Please tell me if I missed something…

My sample will be an Air-Spirit who is supposed to carry the summoner around.

I’ll give the Spirit
  • inhuman Strenght
  • Wings
  • Veils aka. Glamours (so nobody is wondering about that flying wizard…)

What conviction should that being have? I’ll go with Superb +5 for the example…

Containment:
5 + 4 +2 for an Aspect to be on the save side is an +12 complexity containment.

Summoning
Would be the same +12 complexity.

Binding
Binding is a full conflict.
We need (+4 for lucky dice, +4 for stress boxes, +20 for all conditions [inkluding extreme condition], +5 to extend the duration of afternoon to a month) a +33 complexity ritual.

Casting that thing would’nt be that hard, if we play it save (+1 per exchange) and took our time.

Researching it would need many declarations or skipped scenes…

Hmm, oh. Did'nt read that.

I suppose the first law (thats the one against killing, right?) could be brocken by many of the supernatural powers.

DFRPG / Re: Replacement for Bob
« on: April 14, 2010, 12:19:16 PM »
There is a thread around here, where the question is: How to simulate Bob in game terms. (I think it was a high contact skill)
I would go from there.

I would (er, will) divore it from the setting,

If the PC uses the Evocation or Thaumaturgic (or the lesser versions [inkluding Sponsored Magic]) Powers and they violate the Laws of Magic they get the Lawbreaker Power.
If they use other Supernatural Powers like Incite Emotion they dont get the Lawbreaker Power.

Its not an In-Game explanation, but those have to much wiggle room (for my taste).

He works within the gray area but always upholds the spirit of the law as well as the technical letter of the law.

Do I see an contradiction here? (Zombi T-Rex)

On a game play note I do have to say that I am disappointed by the speed with which everyone is looking for ways to avoid the Laws instead of finding creative ways to work within them.
As long as the Lawbreaker Power is purchased I see no real problem. It's expensive enough, that at least my players will be wary of breaking the law.
And even if the PC has political protection and the Lawbreaker Power, that doesnt mean there arent consequences (an extreme consequence may be even a war).

And I was just now comming to the conclusion only full humans could be on the WC.

Was the Troll an example or would you rule otherwise if the Fae parent werent a lowly troll but an highly placed Sidhe?
What about an White Court virgin? I could see one being smuggled into the WCouncil. But if they knew the parents?

Would an Wizard lose his member card, if he got infected (not turned) by the Red Court?

So any changeling causing widespread harm to humans in general or attacks on WC members would be classified as a monstrous threat and/or a declaration of war by the Sidhe court responsible for them.

Quote
the WC would have no problem with Red Vamp. eating humans (as long as they do it discreetly).

I think we arent really disagreeing.

A Changeling on an murder spree or something similiar would be hunted down.
But if its something subtle/small scale. Where a human would be killed to be on the safe side, a Changeling would get free.

Otherwise the WC would have to declare war at least on all Vampire Courts.

This makes me want to play a Changeling cramming for the White council exams to have protection from Mab or some other scary fae.
But would he be allowed to take the tests?  ;)
