DF Spoilers / Re: Murphy in Peace Talks (WoJ spoilers)
« on: August 14, 2017, 10:04:44 PM »
I just can't shake off the feeling that someone in Dresden's crew is more than they seem - either infected by Nemesis, or holding a Coin, or even just a run-of-the-mill traitor. And pre-Ghost Story, Karrin obviously isn't addled, otherwise we couldn't get the short story Aftermath.

But after...

I dunno. She seems to be doing big, major things without seemingly intending to. Especially in Skin Game, where she didn't do a *thing* which helped Dresden.  If not for Uriel's completely unanticipated intervention, she would have effectively sabotaged Dresden entirely - introduced Butters and given him the opportunity to get involved, destroyed a Sword, and lost Dresden the backup he needed.  If Karrin was a traitor, whose #1 priority is keeping under cover, and #2 priority is to sabotage Dresden, this is exactly how she'd act.

Harry should listen more to his subconscious. Maybe when it gave him the dream about Karrin and Lasciel killing him, it wasn't ONLY warning about Lasciel.

There are problems with this, however, at least in reference to Karin being Nemfected. Cold Days and Cold Case dealt heavily with the Outsider forces, and provided excellent opportunities for backstabery. Some Nemesis agents/appendages even try their hand at it. But! On the island, in the final moments, we have Mab present. We have Harry in attendance... and we have a selection of team Dresden. Everyone is in position to take down multiple major players on the side of reality, Karin especially. But she, along with the others present, don't.

Cold Days is similar with Ramirez. Though he wouldn't have been quite as effective, he could have backstabbed Molly before she knew what he was doing. He could have taken her head off from behind with his warden sword and butchered her. She would have - being an immortal - eventually put herself back together. But, it would have taken time. Cold Days showed us that the near future is what is important. We are approaching - if not end game - a major skirmish in the war, and Mab needs all hands on deck. If Molly were taken out... that wouldn't happen. In conclusion!

I suggest that - at least up through Skin Game - everyone present on Demonreach during Cold Days, along with Ramirez - is clean of Nemfection.

That includes Karin.

Thoughts?

That being said, I completely agree that people aren't telling Dresden - and by extension us - everything. And, if there isn't at least one Nemfected individual in Harry's group... I'll eat Harry's hat.

DF Spoilers / Re: Maggie's School Friends at SMAGT
« on: August 13, 2017, 12:47:25 AM »
I can't NOT get in on this after seeing this thread!

So...

One of the issues we run into with this is that the children of Harry's friends - for the most part - are years apart from Maggie. So, I'm going to drop that idea all together and go with completely non team Dresden related ideas... other than the secret son of Marcone. That idea is just too amazing, especially if he's actually the Xander of the group because Marcone is trying to keep him away from the dark side of business until he's older. Protecting children is one of Marcone's goals, after all.

For a heavy... Troll girl has already been done with Meryl, so I'm going to avoid beings of fairy origin. Perhaps the scion of one of the small "d" dragons might be interesting. Someone who still has the ability to switch between human form and claws, wings, scales, fire-breath galore! But, who is just a whelp, a baby of their kind who can't do much else. Alternatively, we've already been given the Heavy in the form of Mouse. See "Mouse fights a van" in Proven Guilty. Or, maybe the two of them develop an almost Gimly and legolas relationship.

Another character that might be fun, if we're adding a feline presence to the team might be a Neko. Most of what we have seen so far is based in Western mythology and it might be fun to see a bit of what the eastern mythical creatures are up to. Are they fighting the Outsiders as well? Or, are they trying to deal with other problems? Yes, a child probably wouldn't let us see much of this, but they might provide a glimpse. Alternatively, they might provide nightmare fuel in the question of: Are Neko actually the changelings of Malks who have had children with humans?  :o

Alternatively, the baby dragon could play the feline role, as the tendency in fiction is to depict them similarly to cats...

I do like the idea of Maggie making friends with the pretty and popular girl who begins as her arch nemesis... but the pool of possible stereotyped origins is rather slim. Sidhe of some kind? White Court? A sylph might be fun, providing the team with some air support(unless the dragon isn't too young to fly yet).

Another magic user or two would be fitting, I think. Harry does have a number of wizard allies alongside his closer friends. Perhaps the kid of a local sorcerer or paranet member who has a lot of promise when it comes to magic? Someone who's skills complement or contrast with Maggie's(if she's a potential wizard). It might also be cool to have someone like Abby from the Ordo, with future sight powers. Might make a fun "super awkward smart kid." Alternatively, someone with Casandra's Tears or - in general - some other divination-based ability.

...There are too many fun ideas.

Mostly though, I'm hoping for things we haven't seen before in large quantity. We've seen a lot of the vampires and the fairies, and I doubt we're going to get a twelve-year-old knight of the cross(unless Maggie sneaks out one night with Amorachious). What haven't we seen a lot of? That's what I want to see.

And I think this will be the very root of the Angst that Jim will write for Harry.

I think they'll be together for awhile, but other stuff will get in the way, and eventually Murph will either leave or be taken (like by the Librarians).
Wasn't there a WoJ about the Librarians thinking all magic is evil with a capital 'E' and as a result, they were partially behind Murph's career crashing and burning because of her friendship with Dresden? I unfortunately don't have the time to look up if my memory is accurate or not(I have a road trip in two hours), so I shall politely invoke the quote gods and request: Could you please find it for me, oh mighty and powerful lords of the obscure quotes? Masters of the arcane confirmations by Jim! Most devoted fans of the Butcher's work! Your humble servant begs your aid, and provides a shameless bribe in the form of internet cookies!

TWG?  MMO?  Not familiar with these abbreviations.

TWG: The White God (The Abrahamic God or Christianity, etc...)

MMO: Short-hand for MMORPG, meaning massively multiplayer online roleplaying game.

I'm conflicted...

On one hand, the stories are journeying too far into the deep end of magical society for a simple mortal to hold their own. We can argue about Valmont's "It's how smart you are" remark all we want. But... well, there's a certain point where a mortal needs to resort to remote controlled weaponry, or heavy vehicles instead of a few guns and gadgets. And, while it would be fun to see Harry ride into battle alongside a tank... the stories are in the middle of Chicago, a major city. That would get people into big trouble. Too, Murph now has her knee problem, which would hinder her as a field operative unless she took the Kincaid approach and started using sniper rifles or something.

Making her a Valkyrie would side-step this issue.

However, since the beginning of the series, Murphy has been the mortal of the group. She's fulfilled the same roll that Xander did for the Buffy crew. Had Butters remained a normal guy, and not become a Knight, I would have been fully behind this change. As things are, there aren't really any people in Harry's core group that remain "human" in that sense. Michael can't take the field anymore with his injuries(having a Grace does not qualify him for "pure mortal" status). Marconi isn't part of the core crew, though he is a major character. SI has drifted into the background now that Dresden is dealing with bigger problems than they can handle. We haven't seen Tilly enough for him to have joined the Dresden Bat Family.

And, while it isn't entirely necessary for there to be a mortal on the team, there has been a big fuss throughout the series about how controversial they are to the supernatural, and removing one from the team would... It would create a separation that doesn't sit well with me emotionally. Something along the lines of "we big strong supernaturals have to protect the little humans," which has been zigzagged around throughout the entire series.

There is already a Valkyrie in the cast that can be called upon if the story needs one. If we were to get another, I feel like Guard becomes - in some ways - redundant.

I'm not really sure what else to add...

If anyone does end up going and see this could you ask what is Mister's cat name for Harry? For some reason this is the first question I would ask if I could go myself.
Silly human! Such things as true names are beneath the notice of Mister. He needs no such clumsy tool to enforce his will upon reality, nor the need to enforce his will. Reality simply does everything it can to satisfy Mister's desires.

And, to satisfy the question of the original post: Unfortunately I'm living the broke, no-longer college student life at the moment. I won't be going.

Molly chose to go before the council. She chose to seek their judgement. Michael, despite wishing otherwise, would have no power to protect his daughter in the same way he couldn't save Hanah Ascher from the Gate of Fire because she chose to try and pull the lever. She wasn't an innocent, trapped in a situation she had no hand in creating.

That being said, no. I don't expect God to have Michael in a situation where he'd have to watch his daughter die. That's kind of the whole point of Faith, isn't it? Especially in that context? Doesn't Harry even comment on that? That is why the original question was a "what if" statement.

Michael himself has said that their job isn't to punish - and he does use that word specifically, if my memory serves(sorry, don't have my copy of Death Masks available at the moment) - when first explaining the Knights' purpose to Harry. They are supposed to save. And besides, Warrior shows us that Michael wouldn't be acting calm and thinking through the consequences were he to walk in on the execution of his daughter(and presumably Harry).

DF Spoilers / Re: Character discussion.
« on: July 26, 2017, 09:21:53 PM »
Ebenezar was always one of my favorite characters to love-hate. He's dark hero material and tragic hero material in so many ways, it's mind-blowing to think about. I can only hope we'll learn more about him and see more of him. (Short shory in his pov would be something I'd trade a couple more months of PT wait for. Don't kill me please).
While I too love Ebenezer as a character, I would prefer that his short story be a follow-up to Peace Talks(if for no other reason than I feel the book could be an amazing opportunity for some great Ebenezer moments in and of itself...). Oh, by the way... Don't be scared if Kincaid drops by your place later... I umm... am going to move on to a new topic now.  8) ;) :)

But, on the topic of the Vote: I decided on Michael and Morgan. I personally feel that they have some of the most compelling arcs in the series. Morgan isn't just exercising a personal grudge towards Harry. He's become so incredibly bitter that he hates everyone who breaks the WC's rules with an unholy passion. But, to some degree he moves past that with Harry. He doesn't like Harry, but he can see - in the end - that Harry is actually one of the quote unquote good guys. Too(the one thing saving his story from being a complete tragedy in my eyes), he is allowed to die in service to the one thing that means anything to him anymore - other than Anastasia.

Michael is similar, and yet completely different. He - like Morgan - truly and completely believes in what he does. He goes out to save the monsters from the path they walk. Not meet out judgement. No. He tries to save them. He almost dies doing it, too, but is given a happy ending to spend with his family, build homes... do the things he loves. And, even if it isn't as obvious, Warrior points out that he is still fighting the good fight. He's still one of the good guys and he always will be.

DF Spoilers / Re: Upcoming Book Titles
« on: July 19, 2017, 05:25:31 AM »
My reason for "Dark Pact" for the Blackstaff book is that I think that whomever takes up the Blackstaff makes a pact with someone, or something.  Also there could be a reason Harry has to take up the staff similarly to taking up the Winter Knight mantle.
Somewhere, wasn't there a WoJ about the Black Staff choosing his or her successor? Seems like kind of a d*ck move if there's a dark pact of some kind involved. Though, there does have to be something that allows Eb to summon and dismiss the BS.

Quote
Another possible book title:
Long Shot

why?  Well he uses the handle Longshotauthor, and I think he uses the handle long shot when he plays video games sometimes.
Are you insinuating that these are actually Jim's journals, and he's just changing the names of the people involved?  ;D

DF Spoilers / Re: Wag the Fomor
« on: July 16, 2017, 03:45:44 AM »
The description of the fomor sound similar to the well inmates...
Spring boarding off of this: Does anyone think the Fomor might be corrupted by The Sleeper mentioned in Cold Case?

Maeve mentioned "awakening the sleepers" as well in Cold Days, which seems worth noting. I have a hard time thinking the two mentioned are unrelated.

Half fun and half serious: What do you guys think some of the upcoming book titles will be for the books we don't know yet? So, not Mirror Mirror or Peace Talks. Personally, I'm curious if one of the books will be called Black Staff.

DF Spoilers / Nemesis Factions...?
« on: July 11, 2017, 08:28:01 PM »
Rereading TC, and I came across the scene between Harry and Rashid while on the docks and Demon Reach. Rashid remarks on a number of events that have him wondering whether Harry is part of the Black Council/Nemfected. We know that Harry isn't. We also know that most, if not all, of Harry's cases involved him working against the Outsiders. One thing I have issues with is the idea that Rashid wouldn't know that most of these fall into that category. So... does him wondering if Harry is working for the bad guys imply multiple Outsider factions?

DF Spoilers / Is There More Magic In the World?
« on: July 04, 2017, 04:17:52 PM »
This is a strange question that occurred to me while I was planning out part of my own original work procrastinating:

1) Harry has said that magic comes from the energy of life.
2) There are exponentially more people than there were on earth a few hundred years ago(more life on earth?).
3) Conservation of energy has also been mentioned in regards to how magic works.

So, does the fact that there are more people mean that more magic energy is generated, or is this a major factor in why the powers that be have become diluted, their mojo spread out like Hades(?) and Santa Odin mentioned?

DF Spoilers / Smaug, Mr. Ferro... and Dollar Signs in the Eyes
« on: June 30, 2017, 03:47:41 AM »
Earlier today, I was doing a bit of research for a side project of mine, and stumbled across Forbes Fictional 16. Listed at number two was Smaug(Sadly, no relation), with 54 billion dollars in estimated wealth. And, that got me wondering: How much is Ferrovax worth? I get that he's a semi-divine being, but he's a Dragon. And, Dragons have hoards. I'm curious what you think one-thousand(or more!) years of interest and investments would get him. Alternatively, maybe he doesn't make investments. Could he just sit on it instead(doubtful, given his vault at Marcone's place)?

Thoughts?

NOTE: This is purely for silly, random fun. So... have fun with it!
