DF Spoilers / Re: [BG spoilers!!] Minor thing about the Blackstaff
« on: October 06, 2020, 06:23:25 AM »
:o What is BT?

Bath Time

It's a recently released short story, detailing Mister's thwarting of the big monkey(how Mister refers to Harry)'s attempts to dunk him under the soapy smelly water. Oh, and for some reason Eb goes all Black Staff during the tale. Supposedly, even more nuts than what we got in Battle Ground. Haven't read it myself, though...

DF Spoilers / Re: (SPOILERS)Grumping about the timeline in BG

My thought was, the books PT and BG could have been kept as one with the battle shorter;)
But not less intense. Sometimes I had the feeling, Jim Butcher lost himself a bit in describing the battle scenes.
Don't get me wrong. He wrote them in an excellent way and I enjoyed reading them. But sometimes less is more. I would have wished more emphasis on the storyline.
And I would have wished

But all in all I liked it.
A longer battle would not have made sense. This would have meant less fighting, more siege situations. I.e. less action.

Yeah, a siege was more along the lines of what I was thinking. Something like what happened in the third Codex Alera book(love that battle...). Was still fun, though. Shortening the battle would have been a dis-service to the scale of the conflict, I think. The Accords members were supposed to be fighting a legion/legions(according to the scary kitty's scouting session). Having that all take place in the last fourth or fifth of a usual-sized book would be kind of underwhelming for something that was supposed to be "un-ignorable."

Quote
It was OK. I'm looking forward to the next book, but I expect something like Ghost Story after Changes. Something almost completely off, so that Harry has to learn something new.

Well, Mirror Mirror is supposedly next. So, your guess about a Ghost Story situation being next makes a lot of sense. I'll bet you five imaginary dollars Harry disappears just before the wedding. I can't imagine any other situation that would complicate things as much, unless someone comes along for the ride.

Maybe we won't even see the

, if it even comes to that. But I think it does. I try to imagine now how Harry's and Maggie's lives will change because of that. And how they will deal with it.

PS: and I would love to read about Harry accompanying Lara to the mentioned political events. Whatever made Mab say that???? Does she really believe he might be a help for Lara being diplomatic???? Oh dear. This must be funny to read. Oh, please write that. LOL
PPS: maybe she wants Lara to teach him diplomacy.

I'll admit the Harry x Lara wedding kind of threw me for a loop when Mab proposed(hehe) it. Peace Talks started with Mab warning her not to... what was her turn of phrase? Something about not eating her food? Given what usually happens on one's wedding night and Lara's... enticing proclivities... how exactly are they going to get around this conflict of interests? Just a thought.

Although, it could be that Harry is just reaching the end of the allotted "mourning period" rather than disappearing on the wedding day itself.

DF Spoilers / Mama Murphy
« on: October 05, 2020, 05:44:38 AM »
Does anyone else feel like we're missing a scene at the end of BG where Harry has a chat with mama Murphy? Maybe at the funeral, or going to her house to tell her what happened to her daughter?

DF Spoilers / (SPOILERS)Grumping about the timeline in BG
« on: October 05, 2020, 05:42:43 AM »
Okay, let me begin by saying I really enjoyed the ride. It was a fun book. Things exploded. People died. My expectations were - in some ways - exceeded. But... I can't help feeling like having the battle take place over a more stretched out span of time would have been helpful to the story.

What if, instead of a single night of crazy, it had been two or three days? With things as desperate as they were, the defenders of Chicago fight a desperate battle, slowly giving ground. Being pushed back. Wizards collapse under the strain of throwing around so much magic. Sleep a few hours, then get back up to do it again. I'm not sure this would have worked with the city-destroyer that we were led to believe the eye was. But... what we got from it wasn't that. Building destroyer, yes. City? Not so much.

We could have had the National guard show up to complicate things in the middle of the battle, instead of as one big "sweep the fish back into the ocean" moment near the end. They were foreshadowed so much, and we were told they would be such a problem... but in the end they became the reinforcements that allowed the final push against the bad guys. Not a complication for our heroes. I don't have a huge problem with this. It was still fun.

I just feel like the battle could have been... longer? bigger? Not sure bigger is the right word.

Thoughts?

On the other hand, I can't wait to see how things change once footage from that night starts leaking out into the wider world and the cover-up begins to break down.

SIDE NOTE: I hope the grand apocalyptic trilogy doesn't end up on this kind of condensed timeframe.

DF Spoilers / Re: WAG/Scene I want to see in MM or future book
« on: October 04, 2020, 06:24:37 AM »
I think Murphy is alive in Mirror Mirror.  I doubt the Red Court has been destroyed.  If that is the case the Titan is still underwater somewhere.  I think it's going to be very painful when Harry sees alt-Murphy.  Oh, and I think alt-Murphy will be gunning for Harry.  Consider that Alt-Harry's friends will likely be Denarians, Necromancers and White Court vampires.

I vaguely remember a WoJ about Mavra being one of Harry's allies in the alt-universe, and something about Molly having become a necromancer with her Proven Guilty boy toy as a thrall. But, I have no idea from when or which event it comes. I could be entirely wrong in my memories, though.

Agreed on him seeing alt-Murphy being painful. I would guess seeing most of his friends in their alternate existences is going to horrify him, though(see the mention of Molly above...). It makes one wonder who he'll be able to turn to. A Dresden novel without anyone for him to play off of wouldn't work so well, after all. Michael seems an obvious choice, if he's alive. There's no telling if Small Favor even happened. The other Knights are also obvious choices, given what they do and who they are.

I'm kind of holding out hope that Morgan is still alive, and we might get some more of him, maybe mirroring Turn Coat with our Harry showing up at his door to plead for help. The two of them have soul gazed. So, it might make for a clever way to prove he isn't that universe's Harry. That said, Morgan still might kill him depending on what he sees, or even before Harry gets a chance to explain...

Mab would make another interesting consult, though not a tag along for the book. Having two Winter Knights in the timeline for a little while might make things a bit... messy. Heck, maybe the other Winter Knight could make a good(and by good I'm not sure I actually mean "good") character for Harry to interact with. I've seen some theories out there that Mab might have chosen Thomas in that timeline. Maybe there's a whole bit where Thomas is having difficulty trying to control the Mantle, and Harry helps him out. Or, more interestingly, the other way around.

Yes, I've descended into rambling.

The obvious most painful option would be Murphy. 'Cause... obvious reasons. I highly doubt she's as in the know if Harry went all dark side. Maybe she's even still working for or in charge of SI?

I... honestly, it's hard to speculate who he'd team up with. I'm still kind of digesting Battle Ground. Though, the wait between books is going to be a pain now that we've just gotten our latest fix.

That's it. I'm going to bed. I'll check back in tomorrow.

Carlos is not going to be right until he gets laid, preferably in some epic fashion so that the loss of his virginity adds to, not subtracts from its epic nature. I think maybe it going to come to a head at Harry and Lara’s wedding. Her bridesmaids will be her sisters, so perhaps Carlos loses his virginity to ALL of them, and lives, and they all sing his praises.

I hate to disappoint. But, I doubt this will happen. We still need a virgin for the Holy Grail quest when Nick returns...

I find it far more likely that we'll get something along the lines of Rudolph writing Harry up for the murder, and trying to deflect. Where that ends up other than a nebulous "bad things follow," I don't know. But it feels very much like something he'd do, not thinking it through at all.

DF Spoilers / Apocalypse is a state of mind...
« on: October 03, 2020, 08:10:42 AM »
We've heard this statement from two places now. The first was Nick, and the second was He Who Walks Beside(Still laughing because I won that bet from seven years ago :D). I find this very interesting/troubling. To this point, we have been lead to believe(by implication) that Nick was fighting the Outsiders. There was that whole "It's funny that you are the only one I can talk to about this facet of family business" conversation in Small Favor where he freaks out in a big way after finding out that one of his coin palls was involved in the attack on Arctis Tor. Then there was the "We're fighting to save the world" comment from his darling daughter and mistress of the bladed hair.

Other tidbits of info we know are that angels can't be Nemfected/Besidefected. Whether this includes Fallen angels or not, we don't know. But, without anything saying otherwise... I'd say it's a safe bet that it was Nam's host who was compromised. Not Nam himself. Granted, this bit is pure speculation. So, take it or leave it. The thing I'm more concerned with is why Mab is working with Namshiel. Given their... history... Skin Game becomes quite confusing.

In short, I'm not sure which Denarians are the "good guys" anymore. Yes, none of them really count. I'm well aware of that. But... It makes me wonder about whether Nick was Nemfected or not.

What is going on in the ranks of the Knights of the Ancient, Cursed Pocket Change?

DF Spoilers / Scenes you want...
« on: September 12, 2020, 02:06:05 AM »
... but will probably never see...

I'll start off by proposing a couple.

1) Butters needing to explain to his parents about the supernatural, and how he's a Knight of the Cross, a nice callback to Bombshells.

2) Along a similar vein, Charity has brought the kids to her mother's several times throughout the series. Grandma Carpenter seeing the Winter Lady on the news, fighting the Fomor invasion of Chicago would give me all kinds of laughs.

Whadya got?

DF Spoilers / Inconsistency Issue?
« on: August 24, 2020, 08:17:00 AM »
Upon my most recent re-read of the series, and Jim's release of a Morgan journal entry, I've come to notice something interesting. Both Morgan and Rashid suspect Harry of being Nemfected, and know he is Starborn. However, Eb claims this cannot happen Starborn. Do they simply not know all of the Starborn mojo powers? Or, is this supposed to be a hint (along with Eb's lack of self control, repeated warnings of treasury, and encouragement to do questionable magic things) that something is off?

I know we don't need yet another "Is Eb Nemfected?" thread. But... I hadn't seen this detail brought up before.

DF Spoilers / Re: Bob's parents.

Jokingly: Well, I guess this confirms the "Harry travels back in time to become Merlin" theory.

Seriously though, I would guess Lea instead of Mab. She's a muse known for driving men insane with boink desires. Would certainly explain where Bob got his... drives. *shivers in fear* No idea on the father... unless Lea's blush and straightening of her dress at the end of Changes was a clue about a past fling she had with Vaderung(and not just her "negotiating quite vigorously" I think were her words?)?

DF Spoilers / Re: The Nine Billion Names of Harry Dresden
« on: August 20, 2020, 08:25:45 PM »
Again you have to squint and turn your head sideways a little. But, another possible piece of support for the "Harry is Christ" theory:

Didn't Harry and Mab have a talk at the end of Small Favor(?) where Harry said something along the lines of "I'm only human/I'm mortal," and Mab replied with "For now." ? I don't remember the exact quote and don't have the book close at hand to check. But, I swear I remember this exchange being part of a larger discussion at some point.

How much do you guys think that plays into the theory?
"beginning and end?" Like... The alpha and the omega, perhaps? 8)

Yes, it's a butt pull... but I kinda like this theory. So, have some more "evidence" as support, free of charge.

And, hey. If Dresden can be Kemmler and Merlin(both theories I've seen in various places), why not Jesus, too?

Erm... wrong series my guy, though it was heavily inspired by the bible and just about everything else out there. ;)

DF Spoilers / Re: Mirror Mirror Next?
« on: July 31, 2020, 11:52:58 PM »
That
yea, but I'd they know what a starborn does, and is immune to Nemesis then It creates whole host of other issues, why be afraid he went warlock in the first place? Why would Morgan even think he might be a Nemesis puppet unless he was totally ignorant of starborn? Idk, something ain't adding up... Plus we don't understand why Harry was meant to be a capital D Destroyer... This just makes more questions for me than answers... I really feel like Harry shouldn't have interrupted EB talking about starborn, there's more to it than what was said for sure. Feel like Jim gave us a piece to chew on but it's a misdirection... "Lookest thou over there!" And all

That inconsistency could be an implication that Eb is Nemfected...

Yet more support for that theory...
