DF Spoilers / Re: Where Did Harry Get Money in Skin Game?
« on: May 01, 2020, 08:33:51 PM »
If I remember correctly Harry was due back wages once the Wardens became aware of the fact that he was alive. It probably wasn't a huge amount, but at least a couple of hundred dollars.

It seems to me that if Peace Talks had been split into 2 books then the publisher would have announced both, since we all know that we'd line up to buy 2 books at the same time.

I'm wondering if someone in the marketing department just got ahead of themselves and this is book 21.

I read Horror for much the same reasons I read Sci-Fi and fantasy. I enjoy seeing what an author can do with an idea. Much of it is meh, relying on the gross-out factor rather than coming up with something that can genuinely be frightening.

That said, I'm hard to frighten because I have to believe something could actually happen before I'm frightened by it.
Semi-immortal serial killers?  yea, right. Nuclear war? I could see that happening.

I missed something. How do we know where the mirrorverse diverged?

DF Spoilers / Re: Unidentified Winter Knight Abilities

Q:  Have we ever seen Harry boost Infriga or other Winter-magic with Soulfire?

Has there been any reference to any other knight who was also a wizard? Besides Ronald Ruel (sp?), fix and Lloyd Slate, the other one referenced that I remember is Andrei Chicotilo (sp?) who was a mortal Russian serial killer/cannibal. I vaguely seem to remember Giles De Raies being mentioned also.

Harry may unique among knights.

I've suggested that Walt Disney is actually a vampire that feeds of happiness. That would explain the persistent rumor that he's been sighted at Disneyland long after he was reported as dead.

Apropo of nothing, Locus magazine has again listed a publication date for Peace Talks. They list an April 2020 release, but only in the UK, which strikes me as odd. I've noticed that, in general, British authors have an earlier release date for their works in the UK. North American authors have an earlier release date in NA, and most release on either side of the Atlantic on the same date.

I think there are actually a few Shakers left, believe it or not, since celibacy is a requirement. Pretty sure there are a few dozen living in the last Shaker community up in Maine), etc.) kick off, and Harry returns from his period of mourning and hermitude to kick back.

I remember reading that the last Shaker died sometime in the 90's being well over 100.

Is it normal for it to take this long to announce a publication date? The book was supposedly finished July 22... It is now over 3 months later...

Per this video, James Marsters has agreed to do the audiobook for Peace talks. That tells me that the print release date must be fairly close, as you wouldn't set up the base for the audiobook before the book was ready to print.

DF Books / Re: Peace Talks Update
« on: September 20, 2019, 07:08:32 PM »
Last post on this was about 3 weeks ago. I'm presuming that the early chapters needed some work because of the time lapse between start and finish.

Has anyone gotten any hints about where the manuscript is in the revision/editing process?

DF Spoilers / Re: How did the Red Court Originate?

Paranet Papers offers the most conclusive canon story of the Red Courts origins and rise to power.

So the oirginal Lord of Outer Night were vampires/sorcerers who fed on Old Gods thereby gaining their power.

I think the author has conflated the Inca with the Aztec. While the Inca worshipped their Kings as gods, they didn't preform human sacrifice. They were also thousands of miles away. Substitute Aztec and the explanation makes sense.

Part of me thinks that Harry would refuse to be the Blacksraff, he was so mad when he found out what Eb had done as part of his duties, I don't think he'd want any part of it.

He would also have a conflict of interest. The blackstaff is (most likely) Mother Winter's cane. Harry taking possession of it would (presumably) force him to return it to Mother Winter.

Reading this thread made me think about Scalzi's novella "The Dispatcher". If you haven't read it, the main conceit is that you CAN'T kill someone. If you shoot someone in the head, they will wake up in their bed the next morning as if nothing happened.

The only way to actually get kill someone is to put them in a place where they will slowly die of hunger or thirst. That way when they come back they will be on the verge of dying anyway.

This sort of arrangement would not technically violate the use of magic clause, as in the example of walling some one up using magic. You didn't kill them, thirst did. You just made sure they couldn't get out.

I have seen recipes for wine made from all sorts of odd items (beet wine anyone?) I've never seen one for watermelon. I don't think there's enough sugar to make a stable wine. It would also be rather flat tasting if you could produce it because watermelon doesn't have a lot of other flavors to it besides sweet.
