DF Spoilers / Re: Dresdenverse Wishful Thinking - Locations
« on: July 18, 2021, 12:12:01 PM »
I would think some waterworks would be an excellent low-side-damage kind of duelling spot. The Niagara Falls, or if Harry has to face a water mage, maybe the Dutch 'Afsluitdijk' for being associated with murdering a sea (don't tell me that wouldn't help the not-water-mage).

And Rome, Harry absolutely should visit the Colosseum or St. Peter's. And given what JB has already shown, I figure he could navigate that without getting gimmicky or offensive (for similar reasons, I don't think Jerusalem's in the cards - too much risk of being offensive by attributing local sources of power to just one faith; at least in Rome all the Pagan sites got picked up by the Church or Tourism so you don't have to say who was right).

Facing the Fomor at Cape Horn would be just the place to put them finally in their watery grave. If they can't stand there, they can never stand.

Meeting Ivy at one of the world's great libraries or museums, and finding just how scary powerful (and useful - I have hope she remains a good gal) she can be in a place where human advancement is celebrated. I think so far she's only been seen in places where animals are celebrated/remembered. She might even be a nice fit for Rome; Vatican Archives anyone, with her filling in the missing pieces Nick and the Nickelheads burned.

DF Spoilers / Re: Mab's plans with Harry
« on: July 17, 2021, 11:33:41 AM »
Any plan that revolves around marrying the Winter Lady seems like... well. I don't think she can without breaking the Mantle. If procreation is against the Mantle, how could formal agreements to procreate be acceptable? I know it's a rather stripped-to-the-bone conception of marriage which rips out some important bits alongside the unimportant, but still.

That said, Mab clearly IS trying to push Molly and Harry apart, but I'm still not sure if that isn't like here trying to murder Harry - she doesn't mean it, she just doesn't believe their relation is useful if it's weak enough to be broken by this kind of shenanigans.

DF Spoilers / Re: Carlos in Infected
« on: July 16, 2021, 06:37:57 AM »
Well to me the whole thing works best if Carlos was just Carlos.

Why?

Simple - we've known Harry is treated as suspicious or probably-evil since day 1 of the series, but what we see is him consistently proving to e.g. the Wardens that he's really not as bad as they suspect. As powerful maybe, but not as bad. So how'd he ever get to be mistrusted?

Enter Carlos - a notionally upstanding Warden who used to like Harry. Who probably still likes Harry as a person. But because Harry is canoodling with Mab and Lara, and constantly threatening Carlos with Molly (even if Harry doesn't know it), he gets damned suspicious. Add a bit of crazy in the fight with the vampires that killed his other friends, and suddenly that Harry-liker is one more of his enemies - and Harry'll have an uphill struggle if he wants to be friends again.

In short: Carlos-as-human is there to explain/remind why good upstanding people can be Harry's enemy.

DF Spoilers / Re: Ferrovax Identity - crazy theory
« on: July 11, 2021, 05:24:30 PM »
The suffix for the Dragons isn't just -vax. It's also -thrax, like in Siriothrax. It could be that the true suffix is the shared -ax, which has a meaning as a suffix.

As for the names, Ferro is Latin, whereas Pyro and Sirio are Greek. Collectively they could be Light, Fire, and Iron, as others have said.

We know Light, particularly sunlight, can kill some supernatural things. So can Fire, and so can Iron.

So what's the fourth vulnerability for the supernatural world? That might help us identify the nature of the fourth.

I doubt it's faith, hope, or love, as those seem to fall under specific purviews.

Salt, maybe? How do we feel about Salivax/Salithrax or Alavax/Alathrax, keeping it to Latin or Greek?

Silver? Argentivax/Argentithrax or Asimivqx/Asimithrax?
(Running) Water also has some anti-magic properties, so Hydrax or Aquax could work.

And Hydrax sounds a lot like Hydra...

DF Spoilers / Re: All those other Coins...
« on: July 11, 2021, 05:15:44 PM »
Merlin would make a nice mirror for Harry, I guess.

Presumably if he has it, he didn't use it much. That mirror is already taken by Marcone. No, if it's the Merlin, he got the coin safely, he stashed it in a box without being Shadowed, and he keeps it around for when he needs power more than reason. And when disaster strikes, he will pick up the coin and find out it's one of the thugcoins, and be none the stronger for it (though a bit less killable).

DF Spoilers / Re: Reread of small favor
« on: July 11, 2021, 05:08:36 PM »
I thought "do your duty" was referring to Mab needing her to take her out eventually.
And as for the fates, the whole courts are Lachesis. The trick is exactly why they ordered the courts in such a manor. Not sure about the true purpose of the lady's vs queens. Haven't watched Babylon 5 and I don't know where to find it, but I remember the one who was, the one who is and the one who will be trope was borrowed from there. Suppose it has to do with breaking down a larger being into more reality friendly forms.(and preventing imbalance through layering) Actually... That makes me wonder what Odin did with the parts he doffed to become what he is now..

Throwing that on Babylon 5 seems a bit weird, given Babylon 5 borrowed it from much older material. And a maiden/mother/crone split is ancient, too.

That said, I agree the split was to allow the Lady extensive agency, and the Queen still some, within the human world.

DF Spoilers / Re: Denarian Host Compatibility Survey

The battle form of a cat is a cat, obviously. Best a Fallen could do is make the claws longer to go after bigger prey.

That said, I don't think cats fall into the right category of being. They don't have human-enough souls to be part of the free will rigmarole.

DF Spoilers / Re: Are We Wrong about Christos?

Of course Christos was last seen flying and on fire, so how much does it matter?

He should by rights be dead.

DF Spoilers / Re: Total WAG: Cowl's Real Plan
« on: June 25, 2021, 07:43:55 PM »
I gotta say this is one of the better arguments why so many people are recruiting Harry even though he hates them - to be able to use Outsiders without risking Empty Night.

Of course everyone sane is also recruiting Harry, because he can also block those crazier people from properly  using Outsiders to gain power, but it makes a serious amount of sense how you put it. Kudos :)

DF Spoilers / Re: how Harry could beat Carlos, Eb, and others
« on: June 20, 2021, 02:02:18 PM »
The obvious best option is to get in close and start punching. It's how Molly/the WL got him, after all, and it worked extremely well.

Now, Eb has magical countermeasures to stop that kind of thing, so he'd be harder to crack.

DF Spoilers / Re: Wild WAG Sunday
« on: June 11, 2021, 05:02:30 PM »
Once Harry Prime is gone Merlin will appear.  Mab will be revealed as Harry's true love and will meet the fate of his other loves when she is back stabbed by Molly who will complete her trip to evil. And so on.
And of course Molly then becomes MAB later. So she killed herself, somehow, and later travels back in time. At which point early-Harry/Merlin will cast her out to become the cold Mab from the current still-human Molly.

DF Spoilers / Re: Who gets a Banner? (and why?)
« on: June 10, 2021, 08:14:29 PM »
I'd go along with that except for one thing, Marcone had to be pressed hard to aid those harmed by the battle.  He also was willing to go along with a war on humanity.  It wasn't till Harry shamed him and pointed out he'd make a fortune in contracts did he go along with it.
Well is a nickelhead. Humanity doesn't always come through right.

DF Spoilers / Re: What is your favorite part and why?
« on: June 08, 2021, 03:47:39 PM »
I am going to go with a cheesy one. Murphy at Chichen Itza, I think the angelic pronouncement and her actions really drove home just what a crazy amount of power was there, to have 3 potential angelic sockpuppets on hand for team-Harry (of course they already had a wizard or two and the second most powerful of the active Winter Fae, but still).

And of course, from there until Susan's death. It's Harry's first real supernatural battle, not ambush/raid/skirmish. And did it ever deliver. Battle Ground feels sameish in comparison, been there, seen that.

DF Spoilers / Re: Who gets a Banner? (and why?)
« on: June 08, 2021, 03:41:51 PM »
I'm trying to figure out whether it was Marcone's position as a signatory of the Accords and Harry's position as the Winter Knight that allowed them to summon banners or if it was actually their positions' as Baron and Wizard of Chicago?

Basically was it the Accords that empowered them or the city's faith in them?

Thoughts?

On the one hand, Mab sort of says it's an optional-extra power Winter Knights can manifest. On the other hand, punk Marcone then does it too.

So to be frank, I have no idea. The 'faith' option explains Marcone (and Harry), but doesn't really explain Mab's comment. The Winter Knight Power idea explains Mab's comment, but not how Marcone did it.

That's true, but the Fallen aren't chumps either. Arguably the Fallen (not just the Denarians, the whole lot of them) are a far scarier threat than Winter, Odin, Hades etc.

So it's a risk-reward problem. If the Denarians were determined enough I don't think they would care one iota about Hades or Odin or Mab. Depends on what the value of such items were to them. World-ending apocalypse stuff, especially if it was the only way or if it was a sure-fire victory, seems like it would  something they would do anything to get.
I see it quite differently.

Yes, the Fallen COULD try that. But then the un-fallen Angels would be able to come out and play at full strength, too. Blow for blow, hit for hit, and they would probably counter them about exactly.

Only about exactly, of course, but this rounding error is where people like Mab and Odin WOULD make a difference. Angels vs Fallen is probably about a 50:50 fight; Angels+Mab+Harry vs Fallen is 50+1:50.
