DF Spoilers / Re: Surprises
« on: December 15, 2020, 09:26:40 PM »
7. Love it if you could make a thread about Hastings and the events of 1066. It's a really interesting time even in our history, so I am sure it will be more so in the Dresden Universe.
I'm certain I wrote a lengthy post on the topic somewhere on here a year or two (or three?) ago, but I can't find it. Maybe it was lost in the migration from the old forum to this one?
I'm pretty sure it was long enough (somewhere around 1-2k words) that I wrote it in a Word document before trying to post it here. It's not at my fingertips, but I'll poke around on my computers to see if I saved it. Else I'll find an hour or two to rewrite it.

As I went through my post history looking for it, I found this. Looks like I verifiably WAGed Justine's Infection (it was a thought I'd had, but wasn't sure I'd "called" it on here). I'm only quoting it here 'cuz I found it thanks to this thread!
*Snipped because it was a really long post*
Those who may already be Infected:
1. Elaine.
2. I hate to say it, but Justine.
3. Christos.

I say Justine because of the shape of her character arc. She's gone through some radical changes throughout the series. Like, really, really big ones. In fact, when she reveals that she's regained her faculties to Harry (in White Night? I can't recall), she simply states that there's no time to explain how she's recovered, and it's never revisited. And now she's having Thomas's baby, which gives her leverage over Thomas, the White Court, and Harry. I think it's possible that, during her period of disability, she was Infected, and Nemesis managed to not only help her recover faster, but increase her influence in the White Court. Can you think of another mortal who worked so closely with anyone in the upper echelons of the White Court? Certainly not for as long as she has. Lara defends her with her life, and not just because Justine is important to Thomas.

That's my WAG about it, anyway.

DF Spoilers / Re: Anyone else... disappointed? [PT/BG spoilers]
« on: December 14, 2020, 04:59:13 PM »
When Peace Talks finally broke, I read it and was immediately disappointed. Battle Ground came out, and I loved it.
My problem with these two books is that neither one felt complete. BG felt rushed, PT felt slow. Neither felt right.
Jim said he wound up writing "four-thirds of one book" on his first draft of PT, and wrote the last third of PT and BG to produce two. It didn't feel like that to me. Scenes like Murphy's death, which were emotional for me, just didn't have the kind of impact I felt like they should have.
To me, it felt like Jim wrote one book, then added some things and cut it somewhere in the middle to turn it into two.
I liked the story, I liked the individual scenes, and BG was one hell of a ride, but there's a disjointed sensation to the whole situation that just felt off.

DF Spoilers / Re: Dresden Files show
« on: December 14, 2020, 04:45:01 PM »
Personally, I liked the fight scenes in Fate:Zero the best of most recent anime. FMA:Brotherhood was good, and I think it's probably the closest thing to the scale of what we'd see in a Dresden Files adaptation (it's one of a few anime I've watched that handled small, personal stories with dramatic fight scenes and large, scaled-up battles in the same show). Though I haven't watched Naruto, and if they followed the manga, that's probably the last season or three.
Honestly, I think the Death Note style might be a bit off for Dresden. It's a little too realistic; I prefer it when they don't try to capture human anatomy as closely as DN did. I had some similar nits to pick with Castlevania.
Of recent adaptations, I actually thought Promised Neverland had the right approach to character modeling. Semi-realistic, but with just enough exaggerated features to avoid Uncanny Valley and difficulty with fluid motion. Maybe even something like Golden Kamuy would be appropriate; I don't recall any non-Japanese or Ainu character models from the manga, but it's got outstanding character design, in my opinion.
As long as it doesn't go full 2010-now Disney or Pixar, I think it could probably be made to work, regardless of what happens.

DF Spoilers / Re: Surprises

Here are some I think about more often than I should:
1. The identity of the Demonreach prisoner.
2. Additional Starborn reveals, including other Starborn, and more information about their purpose, powers, and functions.
3. Possibly related to that, Elaine reveals of varying drama.
4. Time travel shenanigans (Hounds of Tindalos, which appear in Peace Talks, were conceptualized as entities who only begin to "notice" their prey after they've traveled in time; I think it's obvious that Justine sent them, considering where they were when they first attacked, but I don't think it's an accident).
5. I still don't know why Thomas went after Etri in Peace Talks, and he only tried to warn Harry about Justine's Infection. Did she threaten their baby? What was Thomas trying to accomplish? Was/is Etri Infected? Was Thomas? How is Thomas's assassination attempt (assuming it was genuine) related to the Justine reveal?
6. Chandler's fate. I think it'll be... unexpected, whatever happens (for example, Chandler being the Prisoner is frequently tossed around on here). I think it'll be something we've never thought about.
7. Hastings. I've got a ton of theories about what went down during Hastings/the Battle of Stamford Bridge, the Norman Invasion, and the Outer Gates. I think I'm probably going to be wrong about a big chunk of them, but they've brought up Hastings too often for it to never be revealed.
8. Some thought that Marcone would bear Amoracchius during the BAT. I think that's out of the cards after BG. Who, then, will carry the Sword of Love? Will that be Thomas's triumphant return? Murphy's? ...Maggie's?
9. Assuming Justine did not fake her pregnancy, I think we're in for some reveals about the nature of their child. What effect is there on gestation and growth if the mother is Infected the whole time? What happens when a White Court Vampire has a child with an Infected Mortal? I don't think there can be no effect.
10. Margaret LeFay's necklace. I've been saying it since Changes: that stone isn't just magic MapQuest (is that still around?) that tells you the fastest available route. It operates like a diary; it would not surprise me in the least to learn that there are at least some additional entries in it.
11. The Proven Guilty mysteries. Still no real answers, and I'm praying they surprise me.
There are, in all honesty, too many to count. Most books have at least one good reveal (at least for me).

Could be the Law of Conservation of Ninjutsu. One ninja takes the protagonist twenty minutes to beat, but the protagonist can take down one per second when there are a hundred of them.
For a non-meta answer, yes, I do think that they were mildly disappointing. But I've also only read PT and BG once thus far (I'm listening to them now, but since the Plague started I haven't been driving much, so only listen to audiobooks for 15-30 minutes per day when I'm out with the dogs).
They did manage to kill Wardens in a straight up fight, when they were together, and "ready" (though I question whether you can ever really be ready to fight Drakul). Damn shame about Wild Bill, too. I liked him. Though I'm sure we'll see Chandler again (in fact, I'm surprised he didn't pop back up in BG).
From what I remember, Drakul didn't even seem to be really trying. I wonder what would've happened if someone like Morgan or Luccio were around for that fight—older battlemages with plenty of power to throw around and the technique to match.

There is an enormous difference between not using a condom and going after the people who kidnapped your daughter. They're not even remotely comparable.

Vadderung (if not Kringle) is one of the all-time champions of the Long Game. There's a reason he's helped Harry in the past. He's powerful, he's ancient, and he knows stuff. I cannot wait to see how he'll participate in the Apocalypse Trilogy. I'm not expecting a one-for-one implementation of Ragnarok, mostly because I think some of the key participants have become something else—a point I expect to be explained in greater detail in Body Slam.

Disagree with your interpretations.  I agree that Harry was irrational all through Changes, but it was because he cares, not because he's got some noble death fixation.  Think:  Harry has been an orphan since he was what, 6?  His adoptive father was abusive, twisted, and evil, and then was killed by Harry when he tried to mind control him (and succeeded in mind controlling Harry's first gf).  His first job as a private detective was with a guy who searches for missing children he rarely finds and apparently can only afford to live in his office in a run down, bad part of town on the border of gang territory.  With Harry's skills, he could easily have built a much easier life for himself, but he doesn't, he continues to do what he thinks is right.  He is constantly describing how happy Michael's kids are in the books.  Also, remember when he got his hand fried?  Harry has a fixation on Family, and another on saving and protecting children from all the horrors of the world.  He's going on , trucking along, witnessing all the horrors of the world (not least of which is what the Red Court does, especially when it targets young people) and burning them down whenever possible for people he has never even met before, and then, suddenly, he finds out out of nowhere that not only does he have a daughter, but the red court has her and are probably planning to do something horrible to her.  Changes is nothing but Harry dialing up his usual behavior to save his own daughter, his family, you know, that thing he always, always wished he had for his whole life.  The situation has changed, he now has something personal to fight for, and he goes completely off the rails trying to do it.  Make no mistake, children of your own change everything, whether you've met them before or not.  The only people who wouldn't be affected are those who are married to cold, hard, logic (or people trying to apply cold economics to Harry Dresden), and when has that ever described Harry Dresden?

I agree. All of Changes is perfectly in line with the way Harry would act. He's predisposed to go nuclear when women or children are involved. This happens to be not just a little girl, but his own. Naturally he's going to go full Liam Neeson. I don't think it matters much whether or not Harry's met her; he was always going to lose his mind and unload as much as possible in the direction of her captors. I just don't think many of us expected it to be at this scale in the end.

On another topic: I never cared for Susan. I didn't like her in the first three books, didn't like her when she became "She-Hulk" by Death Masks, and certainly didn't like her when we found out that she was hiding Dresden's daughter from him. I mostly found her annoying. In my opinion, her best contribution to the series was giving Harry his duster.

Addendum:
That means Ivy is /alone/.  That's got to be problematic just from her mental/social/emotional state...

Lots of people have been anticipating her reappearance in Peace Talks after Ghost Story's revelation about Kincaid. Most of the context of those posts have been "Boy, what happens when Ivy finds out what Kincaid did? Does she know? It's going to be mighty awkward when the two of them show up!"

But... she's parted with Kincaid. That means we may see both of them apart from one another, in totally separate circumstances. As in, Ivy is a mediator during the Talks. Kincaid is a mercenary sent by *insert X-faction here* to eliminate *insert Y-target here*.

I feel like this really does free up Kincaid as a character to go from tentative ally/colleague/guy-who-owed-you-one-so-you-asked-him-to-kill-you to possible full-on antagonist.

I'm also going to say it here: Ivy contacted Mab and told her what was going to happen, but waited until Kincaid's flight landed or something. That's how Mab knew to save him, and that's why Ivy insisted on a center-mass shot instead of a headshot.

Mostly the whole thing is stories we've heard a hundred times. (If I'm going to go to the effort of seeing someone in person, I'm going to have looked them up on Youtube and not ask a question that's been asked a hundred times).
Typical. Let me guess:
"Did you plan out the series from the start?"
"Did you know that Harry was going to become the Winter Knight?"
"Wow! Molly's the Winter Lady! Did you know that was going to happen?"

Ah, I totally forgot about that. I have not read it (I did not buy Brief Cases). Thank you

Zoo Day in particular was really good. Kinda tells three stories in one that all take place simultaneously; what happens with Harry, what happens with Maggie, and what happens with Mouse.

The Mouse part is particularly illuminating, because it implies and outright states a whole bunch of things about Mouse that are almost completely absent from the main series—including some specifics about the way his power functions and what it can do. Not quite as earth-shattering character-wise as the Morgan freebie, but it does cast some new light on some particulars of the way Mouse operates in the main series.

Other than that, I don't think there are any new shorts in Brief Cases, just ones that I missed since I don't buy the collections when they come out 'cuz I'd only be buying them for Dresden. Probably not worth a full priced purchase if you only missed Zoo Day, but if you can find it cheap somewhere, it may be worth it.

I used an Audible credit to get the audiobook. I particularly liked Zoo Day because they switched narrators between perspectives. I think Mouse's narrator was Russian? I forget the accent. But he was pretty solid.

Well, agree to disagree. I think Jim would've written the fifty words handwaving the reason he couldn't use LC in Turn Coat rather than excluding it altogether if it wasn't meant to be a hint at something.

I think by Turn Coat LC was toast in terms of a current plot device.
Yeah, but I've always found it odd that Harry doesn't even think of using it to try to locate Thomas. It's alluded to, but never explained.

I don't think it would have worked anyway because the skinwalker could prevent it from doing so, but why is it not even mentioned? Harry's half out of his mind trying to track down Thomas, but doesn't use the one thing that's designed to find sh*t in Chicago?

Jim didn't have to use it. But it feels like too much of a deliberate choice to avoid mentioning it altogether. As far as I can recall, "Little Chicago" never appears in the book once.

....Just checked the EPUB file. No references to "model" regarding LC, nor Little Chicago itself. The only mention of it in TC is chapter 29, page 215 on Nook:
Quote
"A long table in the middle of the room was currently covered by a canvas tarp, and the floor at the far end of the lab had a perfect circle of pure copper embedded in it."

I dunno about anyone else, but that's always felt off to me, especially after all the effort Harry put into building and maintaining it. It appears, finished, in Proven Guilty, White Night, and Small Favor and is completely avoided in the narrative after that? Even JK Rowling—She of the Convenient Excuses—added a line about Time Turners being inaccessible in book six or seven.

From either a Doylist or Watsonian perspective, the above quote is significant to the narrative because LC is still there, but for some undisclosed reason, Harry doesn't consider using it.
