It seems that the spirestone might be a bit conductive

Quote
The bombardment from the Auroran destroyers had not struck the habble directly, but enough of the energy had transferred through the spirestone to dislodge a significant amount of masonry

Perhaps the strong etheric energy down the center of the spire can transfer through the stone to power things farther away from the center

Grimm said..."You can't expect a cat to change his fur because you think it would be better."

Creedy blinked at that. "I...I don't understand.

"A ship is more that wood and crysttals and ethersilk, Byron." Grimm said. "Some thick-skulled vat counters here have always said it was nonsense, but the men of the ship know better. Airships aren't just vehicles-and the men who treat them like more than that get more out of them."

"In the academy we were taught that it has never been conclusively-"

"I went to the acaademy, too, thank you," Grimm said. "The academy is where knowledge begins - not where it ends. You're a solid man. You'll understand in time.

I was actually going to post this last night but none of the threads seemed quite right for it

I'd imagine it is rather dim in the spire.  Isn't that the reason that they all wear goggles on the airship?  I thought that when they went outside one of the characters forgets and is stunned by how bright everything is.
It's the webs interacting with natural light, something about that drives people insane without the goggles to contain it

Quote from: end of chapter 7
They came to a dim section of largely unused tunnel, where the lumin crystals were spaced widely apart

Well that seems a rather decisive answer

They may not have bronze, but they have brass

Quote from: end of chapter 1
Clad in the sheets of brass and copper-shrouded steel

Cinder Spires Spoilers / Re: Why do you think Grimm...?
« on: October 10, 2015, 05:47:28 PM »
And if Grimm was the main leader and he changed the plan to 'get away from an un-winable fight' then that could easily count as cowardice while still getting the respect of people in the know for saving the lives of his crew

I gather that Cavendish holes are filled with tea parties and polite behavior.  And the Enemy has some link to her besides that.
Yeah, this is sort of my view on it so far. The 'holes' are random weird quibbles and I don't think they can be filled by a person/thing they aren't in constant contact with

There is also the fact that she graduated to a full military person. If reggie hasn't then he wouldn't ever come across her to try and get the duel started again

They're following the codes of war! No unnecessary dueling during wartimes. We'll have to see if Reggie gets Adolin to replace barney

i think the meat is grown. it is not from a creature at all.
"part of growing the great sides of meat in the vattery was harvesting the leather casing that grew around them as they matured." sounds like an artificial meat source to me. if the Spires were created to get away from the earth because of some contamination or something. eating from the surface creatures was bad as they could be contaminated. so they have no room on the Spires for herd animal so they create an artificial way to create meat.
Yeah, from what I picked up I'm assuming it's a big (like 150lb) piece of flesh that they grow in a nutrient bath and then harvest when it's big enough. It has skin on it, but I'm not sure if there are any bones inside. If there were it would help get the meat to the correct texture because they could stimulate it to flex against a core bone or something

Cinder Spires Spoilers / Re: Core Crystals...
« on: October 01, 2015, 10:33:00 PM »
I like that Folly began to ask Grimm direct questions when on the ship.  Its like Grimm, while on the ship, counts as a crystal.  :)
I think this ties into my previous comment about how the ship's soul is only active (or only fully active) when Grimm is present.

She could talk to him because he was a part of the ship at that moment, and she only has trouble talking to people (and cats if I'm remembering right, but I read the book quickly and can't quite recall her interactions with Rowl)

There was another difference. Grimm was not on the ship when Folly's master was talking to it. That might account for the difference between how it reacted. Grimm could be a key part of the soul of the ship

I've been trying to remember what the AP stood for in a department at work for three days so obviously my favorite quote so far in the book is

"Accounts payable"

This is kind of how Brandon Sanderson's books work. He has the gods that can be fragmented that can then splinter, and are the source of souls in entire worlds. And then he has characters that can travel between the worlds.
