DFRPG / Re: movie inspirations for DFRPG

Has anybody mentioned The Ninth Gate? Antique books with a ritual encoded in a series of wood-block prints. Great game fodder.

mostlyawake who started the thread.

TV Shows
Dark Shadows
American Gothic
The Night Stalker
Tales From the Crypt
Twilight Zone
Outer Limits
Tales from the Darkside
Bewitched
Supernatural (that is a given)
"The Gathering" (2007) Miniseries

Movies (a good majority of the films I would recommend have been mentioned)
Bell Book and Candle (1958)
Cast a Deadly Spell (1991) <I know it is mentioned to death, Jim Butcher's inspiration for Dresden Files but it is linked to the film below>
Witch Hunt (1994) <sequel to Cast a Deadly Spell>
Ghost Rider (2007)
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005)
The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (2008)
The Orphanage (2007)
Hellboy 1 & 2
Pan's Labyrinth (2006)
Sleepy Hollow (1999)
Brotherhood of the Wolf (2001)
Any Classic Hammer Film

I could think of others but this is a good start.

DFRPG / Re: Witchblade
« on: August 02, 2010, 03:02:20 PM »
I'm thinking of making a character with a magical gauntlet like in Witchblade. It wouldn't necessarily have to be exactly the same, I just need a good base to start from.

I'd say Emmisary of Power with an Item of Power (It's a Gauntlet; Unbreakable; Has Own Agenda; Inhuman Strength)
I'd like it to have a directional shield effect as well, kind of like Harry's shield bracelet but I think that is a focus for his magic. Not sure how to do it, maybe Toughness with the Catch being it's directional?

Anyways, any suggestions are appreciated.

The comic book or TV Version or Anime?

One thing about the comic book and Anime version the Witchblade takes over the host because it is a symbiote and burns out the wearer usually killing them as well as trying to take them over.
The TV version did not touch much on this.

It is both a curse and power. This is not in my opinion reflected in the builds so far mentioned and I am at work so I do not have my book to toss in my build might type it up when I get home.

And if you are talking the Witchblade might not be a bad idea to toss in the Darkness too.

DFRPG / Re: Mummies in the Dresdenverse
« on: July 30, 2010, 05:06:42 PM »
I would take a look at Promethean or Mummy by White Wolf for ideas and good source material to translate to Dresdenverse.

There is a thread that someone is converting old WoD stereotypes over to Dresdenverse. I do not know if he has converted the Mummies take a look.

On building the Mummy.

Other than a Mummy what is he wanting to do? What is he envisioning his character able to do? Would he be able to cast magic like in the Mummy Movies? Is he an Egyptian, Mayan, Mongolian, etc Mummy? Does he just want to be reincanrnated in a new body with no powers but a long memory of skills and abilities? There are a lot of questions I am not sure what you want to do

I would sit down with the player and talk to them making notes and working out exactly what this template would be able to do. I had to do that with one of my players about her idea in my game. Ask questions make a new template.

That was my thought on it, since humans and ghouls were obviously compatible at one point.  It could still hold true, and would also explain how such an entity could keep their consumption of human flesh down to a concealable limit (not a full ghoul, not a full apetite).

As DFJunkie points out, there is no proof ghouls are allergic to holy stuff.  I cannot remember any such proof anywhere in the series, though I could be wrong and would welcome page references.  And as for studying her...I have.  I'd be happy to get into that debate with you, if extended riffs involving religion weren't against the rules of the forum.  Suffice it to say that I have come to very different conclusions.
(And as for True Believer, I can argue that, too; read what some of her personal letters, preserved after her death, contain.)

DF Junkie, I was thinking of using her as a mix of Major Power and Antagonist.  I liked the crossover between the Catholic Church and the Sabbat in the Old World of Darkness Material, and I was thinking that this could be very fertile ground for a variety of reasons; the emotions, the imagery...my main allies are actually intended to be the poor most mistreated by those in power, the ones who actually need the help and yet never actually receive the resources and money supposedly earmarked for them.  'Prayer of the Refugee' by Rise Against is some of my inspiration there.

Really? Since when has a Ghoul been able to enter the Catholic Church in Dresden Book or am I reading a completely different series? Wait I am not. You are.

Dresden hides in the church and his allies to keep away from the evil and bad stuff like ghouls. Hell no proof? Read the series.

Does not work in game mechanics of who she was.

One of the most Holy People of the 20th Century a ghoul? The Living Saint she was called when she was alive a GHOUL?! Excuse me?! As a Ghoul there is no way she could have entered some of the Holiest Grounds in the world without being burnt to a crisp!? I am not just talking Christian Holy Places but Hindu as well. She also lived in a Convent and went to Church. She would not be able to do that with that design in the slightest.

There is no way Mother Theresa was a Ghoul! She was a True Believer dear God study the woman.

DFRPG / Re: Options when a new player joins group

Well even in the game I am running I do not have every location and aspect of my city planned. There are still gaps that are not being used. Since the new player was not part of the first overall city and character creation. Use the areas not covered yet to help create his/her character that player might not yet have that freedom as the first day but they still can get a section of the city that is theirs.

I am planning that for some of the players I have coming in next month.

I'll second all of UltraTrolls movie suggestions especially if you can find them all. Grim Prairie Tales might be pretty tough to track down, but worth it.

You might also give Ravenous (1999) a try as well, it's a little earlier then the time period you were looking for, but an interesting take on a horror/supernatural western story.

Yes, Ravenous (1999), I was racking my brain trying to think of the title of that one. Sadly Grim Prairie Tales is not on DVD.

Some suggested movies for your theme these are some Westerns with Supernatural Twists:
  • Grim Prairie Tales (1990): If you can find this rare gem of a movie worth seeing two men meet at the campfire and exchange Wild West Ghost Stories. This stars James Earl Jones and Brad Dourif.
  • Purgatory (1999): Some outlaws enter a town and not everything is what they seem. This is an all star cast including Eric Roberts, Sam Shepard, Randy Quaid and Donnie Wahlberg
  • High Plains Drifter (1973): This is a Clint Eastwood and well a mysterious stranger arrives in this town but there is a supernatural twist at the end.

Avoid the Jonah Hex film it is rubbish.

Roy Rogers Files would be awesome.

We rode out to fight the Denarians.
In the wild and windy west.
Their vile howls pierced the darkness
But my six gun spoke the best.
Their four eyes were shot out
Leaving two for their black heart.
I brought them back for the reward.
Their bodies piled high in the horse drawn cart.

Zen that is cool.

Deadlands and Werewolf Wild West bother another RPG would be helpful with setting up a Supernatural Western. I am using some of the information in the book because of where I am running my game Modern day Albuquerque.

As for NPCs being around, Ebenezer would be. Ancient Mai, Donald Morgan, Luciano, the Merlin, Nicedemus and his cronies come off the top of my head.

Some good ideas here. I certainly would love a GM Screen, FATE dice, and Chips (all customized to the Dresdenverse).

I agree that an "Our World, Volume II" would be neat, but seriously we wouldn't want something like this for several years. I mean, each of Jim's novels will have some new material but the core rulebook covers roughly a dozen books and you wouldn't want too many little 1-2 book addon volumes. (Unless they were short PDF updates.)

Disagree, Jim Butcher has many locations other than Chicago that are in his short stories that take place in the Dresdenverse that were not mentioned in Our World that deserve to be expanded. Same with many of the creatures and villains that were not mentioned in the first two RPG books.

Also the RPG only covers up to Small Favor events, creatures, and location, The Post Small Favor Books (Turncoat, Changes as well as the upcoming Ghost Story) and short stories were not covered. These is enough for an update book here.

Well, if they are not planning to publish more books then "the future of the line" would be entirely in the hands of the fans.

So far I have not been able to locate a Dresden Files FRPG web ring, which would be the next logical step IMHO.

:)

I suck at webdesign or I would make a page on my game for that.
