If you're not a mind mage, it's really not hard to stay within the Laws. To break them you have to kill someone, travel through time, bring back the dead, transform someone else's body massively, or commune with horrors from beyond space and time. None of those are everyday things, so it wouldn't take much luck to stay within the lines.

For a hexing alternative, you could make them really offensive to animals. Dunno if that fits the style of the character, but it works in Ars Magica. (Actually, wizards in Ars Magica are offensive to people too. But that's probably too harsh.)

Hence why I believe  that i couldn't use star Wars Jedi as the source art.....if i want to keep him on the good side of the white council the whole Jedi mind trick would cause him to lose his head.

Hmm makes me want to just give him the inability to open peanut butter jars, but then I realize this is DFRPG not CSRPG :)

The way you describe Ars Magica makes me think of the blanks form Warhammer 40k  zero/negative anti-psyker

God's chosen warrior put implace not to wipe out demons so much as keep them in check as they are apart of the human condition
bad-ass exorcist to predator of predator .
is basically immortal,
Master unarmed and armed combat
extreme healing , 
can use his aura to do stuff that makes witches piss them self because what he does should take 10 to 20 of at least one coven working together.
His aura works on the sub atomic level so he has been know to transmute gunpowder and c4 to inactive compounds....are cause guns to prematurely go off.
He scares all the old vampires because he basically a 2 year by their reckoning yet he can hold his own with 200 year old vampire ....on a normal day...unless Grim driving thats when his skills go of the charts
Grim is his fighting persona that comes out in book 2 basically a savant a fighting and surviving slight anger problem is comes with this.
Can make mone edge with his aura (blade the sharp enough to cut at the molecule level).
Has WereBear-Wolf that always near by

Tatiana Demidova
Queen of the Vampire
 basically immortal
extreme healing , 
Master unarmed and armed combat ( she uses two swords and throwing darts)
only 24 at the start of the series very advanced.
Bonded with Chris as she has Chosen him for her mate.
She is very powerful both as a fighter,

And as business Woman she leads the New York Coven and over the the stock market, the Covens connection and wealth is astounding and she continues to leverage it and out shine others.

Her voice has power , she can give her word power that force people obey, or make a note so clear that it can punch a hole throw solid steel.

They both can be killed it just really hard.
also Tatiana is allergic to sliver  while Chris seems to be allergic to DU(Depleted uranium)

the US army is also unsure what to do about Chris as he is to powerfull,

The more I think about these two Feel I'd have to make them NPC their just so overpowered feel and the first time grim comes you Chris comes out, or Tatiana gets pissed  they'd lose free will and just kicking ass. yes they may not kill the parter members but still all choice would be lost for the player.

DFRPG / Demon Accords Character Builds

I've been reading the demon Accord books and thou their not they are no Harry Dresden but are still fun reads (kind've like the b-rate movies you find that are not great but still fun to watch).

I'm new to the rpg scene, still trying to talk my friends to play the DFRPG ( I'm thinking of GM even if i've never don't it before or played before if I can convince them).

Any way I'd like to see what the character sheet would like for Chris Gordon and  Tatiana Demidova
Chris is God's Worrier against demons
Tatiana is they only Born Vampire

They meet and hook up and start kick'n ass and taking names.

If you've read the series and have suggestion for builds I'd love to see them ,  I'm assuming they would have to be submerged as some of stuff Chris does would scare the crap out the White Council and probable make the fae hesitate for bit.

I've been thinking about a character for awhile now and wanted suggestion on how to go about building them.

This character would have no formal wizard training thou they would have the potential to be one.

My idea was they would find out about magic at a young age and be self-taught how to use their power by use either a anime (genera) or fantasy novels as their guide.

I'm still unsure how to prevent them from breaking one of the 7 laws of magic before a warden finds them. ( this is a key aspect I'm trying to play with)
Option 1). They are dumb lucky only use magic in ways that don't break the laws.
Option 2). They have mysterious benefactor the realises what they are doing and instead of teaching them how to use magic, they just subtle lead the person away form breaking rules. all for the purpose of seeing the new form/style of magic be created.

if anime focused I would could see all their spells creating some for of magic circle ( Fairy Tale style, or FullMetal Achemist style).

We know now that Molly can now use cell phones because she is the winter lady.

So I'm playing with the idea that because his belief and use of magic is so different then the normal then he may interact with tech more easily (so he can get his show watched). if this is the case I'd want to have his magic cause some from of disruption in other areas of his life to balance this boon out. any ideas? or suggestion , this isn't a big thing as theirs always manga :). Feel if this was a factor would tie in to the style of anime the learn form , Fate/stay Night comes to minded, reality marbles mean you don't think like humens but or different no matter if its only slightly.

Granted this could be consider a archetype more then a single character as depending on which anime they focused would change their ablities

I agree the soul of the ship is from the power crystal , Both folly and Master Ferus both commented on Predator's ship core before the upgrades got finished, and Grim said at the beginning of the book that every ship sound differently . I would also wager that with Predator's ship core being so much "older" that her consciousness may be more defined. thou that would also beg the question does the spire of a consciousness ( a slower one like Ents from LOTOR) with all the power the seem to manage to maintain their systems. I think ships would have closer bond with their ships spirit consider their partnership and function.  Though as forcaste of a possible plot point for the next books, if Predator ever gets into fight and get overall damage, I could for see crew making a comment about the Predator 2 feeling just like the old ship  if the are able so salvage her core for the new one. Thought that would feel a bit like Mass Effect 2 if i'm honest. still be interesting to read. know Jim he is never above blowing stuff up.

I've pick up the DFRPG books a bit ago i'm still working on figuring out the game myself (no previous table top RPG experince). I'm looking forward to when I can find people interested in playing it. Thou I do think it be fun to have the players that have not read the books play vanilla characters, (I'm thinking of Butters in Dead Beat). I would help if on player was familar with the stories. But I guess you could provided on player with a book or talking Skull(go Bob!) to provided them with need information as needed. Granted depending on when you set your story you could also just feed of the Para-Net Forums I guess.

As I was reading this the idea I had was of cyber version of Nicodemus shadow. (reference skin games) . So your character would be more of the "knowledge is power" kind of guy.  He has the entire net and paranet forums at his fingers tips. He my not gain flash combat abilities per say. But he knows ever record bit of knowledge on the web ( this side of Ivy). 

.... Now thats is an interesting angle you could play with. How would Ivy feel about another being being aware of all written works ( well upload to the web) or any conversation done around tech. That could conflict with her mission possibly. 

I could also see were this mantel would cause EXTREME paranoia. We know that Winter focuses on baser instincts. Just imagine what that much knowledge could do to you mind...... fun times

Mechanically it would be as simple as focusing on Thaumaturgy and potions, (runes). If you have focus items, those could be your tattoos, or a bag of rune stone. You could also have an aspect involving your runes specifically, so you can always have an easy tag based on your theme.

Did you have a theme, like FMA or a variation it that anime? Also, will you be using an existing set of runes, on an invented one?

Your comment on programming gave me the thought of some young computer geek from the currant generation, immersed in computers and social media from the time they could talk. Then BAM! Puberty and their powers hit, and they lose it all. But their powers are affected by the way they grew up. Casting spells by writing the effect out on a keyboard, spells written in programming languages, (indecipherable to other wizards).

That's been one of my basic idea is computer/manga nerd all of suddenly loses direct access to technology but get magic... their for he tries to use magic like all the manga/computer he is read  or know.. The big problems i've ran into is is this how do i prevent him from breaking one of the laws and still learn the skills that way story wise. Even if he does brake the laws if he isn't apprentice he will still be looked at strangle by the council and all their traditions.

I do have another question that would effect my backstory is about the sight and soulgaze. When do wizards first get this abilities. is it when they fist unlock the powers or is after they ever reached certain level of magic ability....

So my thought was to have Wizard that can't do much with evocation ( can lights candles if need be but that's about it on flash magic).

Instead he focuses on runes.
His spells can be powerfull but they can take time to setup.(i'm thinking spell-casting like executing programs).

most his skill focuses on creating enchanted items for battle ( aspect : be prepared is a creed).

He could also have certain rune arrays on his body for strength and healing ( as need with certain costs)

I feel this could sagway in to a fullmetal alchemist type combat(more Al style)

any ideas or contest

I was thinking about the doing a druid character for my fist Dresden RPG game.

As i was thinking about the Druid and his bond with Gaia I was reminded of the bond harry has with the demonreach. I got to thinking that the druidic bond could be similar to the emissary of power and Genius loci but i'm still trying to work on how mechanically that would work.

I just can't see your druid be  wizard also at that point.
Ideas ans suggestion are welcomed

I'm a NEWB ( see their with capital letters ) to table top rpgs.
But the The Dresden Files has me hook and I'm about caught up with the book series.

I'm currently trying to thinking up some kewl ideas for what the supernatural face of Kansas City would be.
I'm wanting to have some ideas ready for when I can talk some of my friends into playing the game next month.

Kansas City has recent gotten Power and Light ( clubs, bars , Entertainment)
I'm currently debating on how the White or Red Courts could be involved with the this behind the scenes.

I'm also wanting to play off the fact that Missouri River cross throw Kansas City creating the North and South halves. Still not sure where I could take that Supernaturally thought yet.

This doesn't even count the fact the Kansas City is the hub to the west a crossroads in sense.

Kansas City does have its own history of mob so I'm sure I can tie that into it also.

Theirs also a lot of Cave networks around this area that could be fun to work with.

Any ideas that jump up I would love to hear.
