Author Craft / Do you blog?
« on: June 05, 2012, 02:35:02 AM »
Hey there all. I have a blog, it's here at http://dustinbishop.wordpress.com/ if anyone's interested. I've kinda "epic failed" at keeping up with it during college...I got completely swamped and the thought of keeping up with interesting posts and my blog series (cool idea, didn't think about the time sink) just filled me with dread. But now I'd like to get back into the swing of it and I was wondering if any of you do the same?

My blog series is sort of like if Supernatural was a B-movie with a little more realism. You can check it out here if that sort of thing interests you. http://dustinbishop.wordpress.com/2012/01/14/salt-and-iron-episode-one-midnight-riot/ I went very minimalism with the prose here, but a lot of people have told me they enjoyed it. I'd be glad to stop by your blogs as well and I'd be really interested in any other "blog series".

Author Craft / Did Jim nab the market on quoting Lucas?
« on: May 22, 2012, 01:41:17 AM »
So long story short. I have a P.I. and at this point in the novel him and a friend are getting past the metal-detector/pocket checker, so they can get into a casino while packing some heat. I have a ghost that helps them get past the metal detector by manipulating it and then pulling a jedi mind-trick on the checker. Now I really wanted to have my MC pull an obi-wan kenobi as a signal, but then I started thinking. My MC's character voice (while different) comes off with a very Dresden feel. Would this be too much? Just thought I'd wander in and pose this question.

Author Craft / A Startling Revelation
« on: February 08, 2012, 03:29:03 AM »
I was just looking over an old manuscript I had been forced to put on hold over the past few months due to lack of time and wow. The first chapter was freaking beautiful (shocked the crap out of me), but here's the kicker. Some how in the second chapter I went from 1st person past tense to 1st person present tense. I must have completely zoned into my character...It really freaked me out because I did not remember doing this. Anyone else ever notice things like this before?

DFRPG / What It Takes To Run A Game
« on: February 05, 2012, 01:58:25 AM »
I've found myself with a little extra cash and am currently debating on buying "Your Story". I'd most likely find most of my playtime by getting involved in play by posts here on the forum, but if I could talk my friends into it I'd be the one running the game. My question is, would I need anything besides "Your Story" to run a game? The idea of pen and paper rpg's have always been interesting to me, but I've never been able to play them. I've also heard they are great for working on writing skills. Any input would be appreciated.  ;D

Author Craft / Blog Series
« on: January 21, 2012, 03:50:36 AM »
Haven't seen a thread on this before so I thought I'd start one. I've started a Supernatural themed blog series to keep my writing skills up even though my time is limited due to college and work. You can find it here if you'd like to take a look :D http://dustinbishop.wordpress.com/. Do any of you have blog series? It seems to be a trend among a few writers at absolute write. I plan to write a short story following these characters at least every two weeks. Any others do this differently? How do you go about spreading the word, and has it been successful? Come share your experiences here :D.

DFRPG / Using Visual Aids
« on: September 29, 2011, 12:12:03 PM »
Hey there all. I've been stalking this forum with anticipation ever since I decided that I was gonna blow money on these great looking books. I was just wondering, does anyone use visual aids during their campaigns? My gf and my buddy will prolly be the only two that would be interested in playing so I'm 99.9% positive that I'd be the GM. I was thinking it would be cool to use pictures from the net of things in the campaign to help them visualize more of where they are or what they're fighting. Anyone else do this?

Just curious if there are any other "writing" centric forums you like to visit? Can't help to have other places to gather advice. Cheers.

Author Craft / Perhaps an odd request.
« on: April 22, 2011, 11:13:45 PM »
In my free time I love to Read/Write as I'm sure almost everyone else here does aswell. I really like to have a sort of "backbone" or a solid realistic basis for my ideas and creatures or what have you that I put into my stories. That being said I love to read mythology and legends because to me that is my solid "realistic" basis for the contents of my stories. (I do change them to make them my own though of course.) Anyways I was wondering if anyone else does this and well where do you find your information? Can you recommend any books or other sources? I'm beginning to put Magic into my stories or at least a form of it but I'm not sure where to start the search for a solid basis of semi-realistic information on the subject. Thanks. Heres hoping that I worded my request correctly. Cheers.

DFRPG / Noob question.
« on: December 22, 2010, 03:45:54 AM »
After becoming absolutely enthralled with The Dresden Files this rpg seems like a really fun hobby. Though where I live I seriously doubt I'd find people ot play with easily. Just wondering if there were any groups of people that do this sort of thing across the net?
