Author Craft / Re: Sweet Rejection...
« on: February 07, 2013, 05:42:42 AM »
I've been in the same boat for a while now. So far I've amassed three personal rejections from professional markets. At least my stories were good enough to merit reading completely and giving me compliments, but they still just aren't quite there yet.

Lot's of interesting stuff here. As for the conversation about Iron, Jim seems to have made a lot of his own nuances with this in the Dresden Files. In many cultures iron is a long standing protection against evil, spirits, and magic. In fact iron is believed to have the power to not only block magic but drain it as well. Jim seems to only take irons significance in terms of damaging the Fae, but doesn't offer explanation as to why it's other uses are null and void.

How's everyone been? Trying to get back into the writing thing after about three months of nothing. First short story I wrote really sucked according to some critters, a lot of very basic writing mistakes :(. I think I'll stick to revising my novel before I work the rust out of my writing abilities.

Just wrote a 600 word flash-fiction ghost story for a contest. Thing is I included a dedication to my late fiance, only after I hit send did I notice that I used the wrong to/too right smack dab at the beginning. Ouch.

Author Craft / Re: Those of you who are published, how did you get started?

It's a password protected section specifically for posting your work. It does not count as published. It requires a minimum 50 post count on the forum which you can get easily by asking questions, taking part in discussions, or visiting the SYW (Share Your Work) section and reviewing other peoples writing. No publisher will take note of it as long as it is posted in the password protected section, because it does not count as published.

That makes me feel a bit better. I'm diving right into marking up my printed first draft with the dreaded red pen. Hopefully by November I'll have a final copy. :D Any tips on revision?

My first draft is complete! I'm not sure why but it feels a bit anti-climactic, maybe it's because I already knew how I wanted it to end or maybe it's because I know that a lot more work lies ahead. Hopefully it doesn't mean that my story isn't too great.

Good job everyone! Sadly with college in sessions I've fallen way behind. With only a chapter and an epilogue left to write it's killing me that I can't find time to finish this draft.

I'd read it and probably enjoy the ending. Life isn't sun-shine and rainbows and art imitates life. I want to read about things that make me think, wonder, and maybe even scare me a little. Write the ending you want and let the readers react accordingly.

I think this was really just a place for Cen to vent about getting badgered about her spelling errors. I doubt she was expecting the world to start publishing dyslexic print novels :P.

I meant to edit out some of my bad morning grammar and apparently quoted myself....I gotta finish this cup of coffee before I post on forums... :-\

I have one chapter and an epilogue left to write and then my first novel is complete. It's gonna end up around 40k so I guess it's really a novella. I tend to write short first drafts it seems. I keep my language extremely simple and use minimal description. Hopefully I can crank up the word-count in the re-write, but maybe I'm just more of a novella guy.

I feel for you, Cen. I'm not dyslexic so I don't really know what it's like. When I first saw your posts on here I thought you were just a young kid that didn't feel the need to try and spell words correctly (no offense, it's just that there are a lot of them out there). I think that's where the sort of resentment comes from. If someone doesn't know your dyslexic they simply assume you don't care enough to spell correctly.

Wondering about one of the coolest ways to hide a traditional "cross-roads" or "faustian" demon in plain sight in the City. Settled on golden-statue street performer. It reads a lot better than it sounds :D.
