What did Shecky just say?

FYI: I was only on 2 panels with him*, no new info in those panels ;)

*Novels v Comics & Steampunk

You can ...use....this....code....

...Vijay beat me to it.

I will be there as well. If you're stalking Ji....er, if you're attending his panels, I'm on two of them with him, feel free to say hi.

PS: The adapting novels should be a really good panel. You all of course know Jim and how good he is at speaking, his co-panelist, Mat Johnson, is a guy I know from NPR and is quite the speaker. Should be a great panel with both of them talking about this.

Policies / Re: Forum Rules and Precepts. Please read.

Reposting from Blackstaff in another thread:

Forumites,

Since you all have so much ardor in the discussion of Murphy, this topic is being assigned special rules, rather than being made verboten -- You must all go and reread the Precepts and the Book of Don't before you post on the subject of Murphy's *anything.* Motivations, beliefs, belongings, politics, favorite color, food preferences...then if you violate these rules you will incur Instant Doom - an immediate three day ban from the boards.

Post at your own peril.

The Mods.

PS: Playing silly buggers with this rule, such as trying to bait someone into falling into it, will not be met lightly.

The reason this was done because it's not fair to people who want to discuss Murphy to completely ban discussion on her because some people come to blows on her over time.

Author Craft / Re: Tools for Writers

This may be a good place to post Facebook accounts of people you may wish to follow to hear good stuff about writing  publishing and conventions and such. Note that the personal accounts of authors I'm tossing out there I'm merely assuming they're go "Another follower! Yay! Approved"....this isn't a coordinated effort.

Also note personal accounts will of course contain politics, random stuff, etc, not just writing info.

Author Craft / New Wormwood story in Dirty Magick: New Orleans
« on: April 17, 2015, 10:06:34 PM »
In "All the Pretty Little Horses," Wormwood had just stopped by to listen to the jazz, but Baba Ghede calls in a favor to get him to look into a mass missing persons case.
It just so happens the people that were misplaced happen to have been possessed by the Loa at the time....

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00W8FE3FS for Kindle. Tradeback out in two weeks.

No prior knowledge or reading of Wormwood required.

Ren just informed me the anthology is now full.

Short ;) But not as short as an elevator pitch ....

1 week warning for pitches!

What do Charlie Brown and Jim Butcher have in common?

A love for Cast a Deady Spell*, a pastiche blend of Lovecraft and hard boiled noir. So the former started a series of collected short stories on this theme.

Quote
Dirty Magick: Los Angeles" is an urban fantasy anthology exploring the crossroads between magic and crime. Set in the city that invented noir, these stories comb the back streets and side alleys where the shadows are so sharp, they can shave you clean. Featuring such distinguished writers as Neal Pollack, Richard Rayner, Justin Macumber and Terry Mixon, this collection, edited by Charlie Brown, presents a whole new approach to urban fantasy

Yes, the editor of the Dirty Magick series is really named Charlie Brown. While the first anthology was set in Los Angeles, the next one will be set in his hometown of New Orleans, so if you're interested in submitting a story, make sure you read the FAQ so you don't fall into the pitfalls of writing about Hollywood's New Orleans. Besides, he has a sense of humor in writing it.

I'm not sure who's confirmed in this one, but I was just accepted, Terry Mixon just announced on his FB page he's working on a submission. I've poked a few awesome writers I know from con circuits who are eyeing the project, tossing ideas around in their heads, as well as SASS members.

He's a huge fan of Jim's, apparently, and so you all share Venn-space of good taste. His instructions to me regarding posting this here:

" I'll take pitches from them until Nov 15 and their deadline would be Dec 31...although unpublished writers need to attach a writing sample." Note that if you're a published author, you need to send him a list of publications (the credentials mentioned in the submissions guidlines)

*For more on this, plus the reason why it's spelled "Magick" in the title of the series, read his intro by going here and choose LOOK INSIDE on the book cover.

I need to clarify, that I actually haven't played the game. I'm weird...I need someone who knows the rules to run me through afew sessions before I get the system...at that point I can run things back and forth, but the initial understanding has to be through play, not a rule book. After that, I can go in and get the rules, easily. Yeah, I was hired to write for FASA, designed Falkenstein Paris and consult for Mana Punk but that was for games I already knew very well.

So anything I'm saying is off the books.

As to why I haven't played? No one I know and trust to run a game has run one. The Mana Punk guys I'm a consultant for (world building) run ...well, Mana Punk, as they're constantly refining and testing. Only other folks I know that run games are D&D types.

So I have to take your word on the system ;)

"In the context of the entire series, it's clear that as wizards gain in skill, they learn how to get more out of less - specifically, they make their magical energy 'go farther' by using their energy more efficiently. "
Bingo. Look at Harry's description of Luccio's abilities with fire compared to his.
