As Sancta said, it's all about game balance. Refresh cost balances that. So does trimming a power to exclude an ability in favor of another ability.

And you haven't received any replies to your posts with opinions and possible solutions? Every one I've seen have several but I can always go back and double check. We all seem to want the same thing, a fun and rewarding game experience. I'll admit, sometimes the rules get in the way or don't handle what is seen in the books exactly. That's why we house rule. Not all of the house rules are perfect though, but they can get the job done.

I personally created a couple of custom powers that allow for extra oomph when dealing with rote spells. I'll have to see if I can dig them up.

Ok, I feel I have to ask this. What are you hoping to get out of your points? Some kind of secret admission that there are flaws or perhaps some validation that they are true and maybe one of the game designers to jump in and say "Hey, you're right!" ?

You've asked several questions and for input and don't seem particularly pleased (at least by my reading) with a majority of the responses. If the mechanics as written don't work for you, then why play with them? Use Vancian magic or any other magic system or rule set if you think it will work better. We've all run into issues and we've all had to tweak the rules to our personal tastes and play styles. I don't think I've ever seen a true Rules As Written DFRPG game played. I'm sure they exist in the wild and maybe they are here in one of the PbP games I haven't read, but for the most part there is give and take as to what is kosher. We're simply providing you the tweaks that we've made to make some of the mechanics you're asking about work more to our tastes and expectations.

Yes, but you've managed to hit the mark well enough a lot of the time that you're basically the unofficial authority at this point.

I consider Sancta to be an authority on the mechanics of custom powers. Granted, it's me putting the weight into that authority, even when he's shot down some of my ideas. The responses are reasoned and thought out (which is more than I can say for some of my ideas :) )

DFRPG / Re: New GM Questions

I'm trying really hard to remember if in White Night he got invited in to the same Ordo Lebes member's residence multiple times. Like... if they specified him looking for an invitation more than once. I really wanna say the answer is yes.

I'm also thinking about the number of times that Harry has been inside the Raith Household. I'd have to go through and reread the books to be certain, but I feel very strongly that in Turn Coat he made certain to receive an invitation even though he'd been previously invited. Which would mean that we have a definitive answer on that one.

I want to say I remember that the first time he had to swear an oath on his power to enter the Ordo Lebes apartment. The second time he busted in, leaving part of his power at the door hoping to catch the perp in the act. Dunno about the Raith household. I think he's only actually been in the house twice. Once in Blood Rites in which he was invited in and once again in Turn Coat where Harry and Captain Luccio entered in their capacity as Wardens (which would probably be an invite before Shagnasty showed up). The events of Blood Rites and White Night in the Deeps probably doesn't count because it's a cave on the property and not the house proper (besides, the second time he was met just past the gate by Lara who knew what he was going to do. She'd want him at full power since Harry was essentially acting as her catspaw vs the other White Court Houses).

I wouldn't imagine one of the many homes the Raith's have would have much of a threshold. Sure, some of them live there, but they seem transient enough until Lara takes it up as her base of power.

DFRPG / Re: Fans of the show Leverage? How would you stat Elliot?

Off topic, but part of a convo I had when I finished the last episode of Leverage on Netflix. If I ever had to cast a Dresden Files movie, Christian Kane (the actor who plays Eliot Spencer) is who I would cast as Jared Kincaid.

HickJr beat me to it. That's essentially how I'd handle it as well.

As Haru explains, some of the best ways to accomplish your goals are to ignore some of the restrictions and house rule it or use custom powers contributed by members of these boards. You said it best, the game designers aren't psychic and there hasn't been an update in years (where as we've had several new books by Jim expanding the flavor of magic). Just have to find a way to bridge the gap until Evil Hat can do it.

Sancta, I didn't even have to say your name three times. Did someone forget to say it three times to send you back?

Not all demons use holy as a catch. Demon could be a catch-all category for various denizens of the NeverNever. I think Holy tends to work because it's faith. You believe it will work. I mean, technically the White Court's Hunger could be considered a demon (it's even kind of described as such) and they aren't damaged by Holy.

As for statting him up, I would give him veils with a limitation of Photography (he can only be seen through photos or video). That means the group will probably run around with high tech gadgets, thus handicapping them if they have a wizard or anybody who can throw serious power. If he'd use it in combat, I'd give him the teleportation power (from the DFRPG wiki) with a limitation of only through electronics. I wouldn't stat up jumping into the NeverNever, as that could be done by invoking his high concept for effect.

I'm not super familiar with Slenderman so I don't know anything else about him other than what I've listed.

For some back story stuff on why his Catch was blades previously but that is changed, it could have to do with who or how he was summoned to fight them the first time. Perhaps it was an imperfect or weak summoned form.

DFRPG / Re: Balancing group opposition?
« on: July 07, 2014, 09:01:25 PM »
It totally depends on the maneuver.

If one is using athletics to "flank", I'd let the person defend with athletics
If another is using Might to knock them prone, I'd let them defend
If One is using Rapport to boost his ally's morale, I'd say the PC can't defend that since it doesn't target him.

Defending never counts as an action

Yeah, that's kind of how I thought of it. If it effects the environment they're rolling against 0 (unless a block or extenuating circumstances). If it's directly against an opponent then they get to defend like everything else. Looking over the rules (where Murph is crowding her perp in an alley), it reads like she places the maneuver, the per defends on his action, and she maintains the maneuver on hers. Too bad there isn't mass combat rules somewhere with multiple people maneuvering.

I've always been a little shaky on opposed maneuvers. If all 7 attempt to maneuver, couldn't the character defend against all of the maneuvers? Or does that count as an action?

DFRPG / Re: Custom True Faith powers for review
« on: July 02, 2014, 01:54:33 PM »
I personally wouldn't let the player decide which powers are suppressed. I'd let the GM decide. After all, the player will just have to have Faith that his god has his back and won't give him a problem he can't handle (or help level the playing field)

This is fairly amazing work. Bravo.

Did you ever take a look at the (N)everglades sneak peek from the upcoming Paranet Papers? It might give you additional ideas for your campaign.
