DF Spoilers / Re: Molly's cellphone ...
« on: July 05, 2022, 02:06:04 AM »
Could it be a "sufficiently advanced" machine, sure. Or it could be a mortal cellphone that was used as a plot device to show that Molly is becoming less mortal. Either could be true but I think the second is what was intended/does more to progress the story.

DF Spoilers / Re: Cover Art For the New Novella, "The Law" and News?
« on: June 28, 2022, 03:11:24 AM »
Apparently according to the website there is a livestream event on the 5 July featuring Jim and James Marsters ? About the release of the Novella.

As Jim is reading this himself I am not sure why James is there, perhaps he is is picketing about being done out of a job by Jim, or is going to critique his performance,  or perhaps they are going to announce something else about the Dresden Files. (quality Disney Plus or Netflix TV series with Marsters as Bob, Toot, Eldest Gruff, (basically every male CGI voice character and live action Nicodemus, he’s good at villains and Nicky has an interesting story arc)

This got me thinking, with Priscilla leaving(?) Jim's team or at least Jim Butcher.com I wonder if the Keeper of The Timeline got a new position with the TV crew?? 100% WAG

DF Spoilers / Re: "Thou Shalt Not Open the Outer Gates"
« on: June 14, 2022, 07:57:38 PM »
Unless you are the Gatekeeper.  Chapter 34, Cold Days.  Heck his eye is made from the same material as the Gates.. Much like the Blackstaff, the Gatekeeper is the exception to the rule.

I don't think he is. Remember, at the end of the conversation, the Gatekeeper says something to the effect of, the Council only knows what it has to about our jobs. Meaning that only Harry knows the full extent of his job (if that). Yes, the senior council probably knows something about his job (but not the fullness of it), but they could also believe one thing and in reality, he does something very different.

I agree to an extent with the star born thing, especially since we are now finding them under every other rock in the story.  So if they are really relatively common, what is so special about them and why the secrecy?

I am not sure why you are saying that Star Borns are common. I can only think of a few that we know of for sure, Harry, Listen, the Gatekeeper, and Drakul. There may be a few more I'm missing but this is only a very small handful of characters out of the entire "cast" of characters and even smaller when compared to the world population.

DF Spoilers / Re: Adaptation Do's and Don'ts

That one felt like an excellent mystery series, and properly did one case per season instead of a crime of the week setup.

I don't know anything about Bosch or the showrunners, but this brings up a good point. Do you think the adaptation (if done in TV form) should be one season per case, one case per week, or something else? Personally, I think it should be more of an arc format. The first season could be made up of books 1-3, each being 2 or 3 episodes, with later seasons being more one case per season (you can't or shouldn't do Changes or DB in only 3 episodes). The issue with this format would be showing a progression of time between arcs. In the books, we know that typically each book is 9-15 months after the last book. You could get away with this time progression easier if each case is a full season, but it would be much harder in other storytelling methods, leading to confusion among first-time viewers.

My fear with animation would be that it would lose the real-world Chicago vibe that Butcher writes so well. I really like Legend of Vox Machina and other anime series, but all the anime is set in a very fantasy-style world. The Dresden Files is set in our world. I am just not sure the setting and all the emotional stakes that go along with real people dying would transfer over the animation. In contrast, the reason why the Two Rivers Folk left their village in Wheel of Time was because of the very real threat of violence done to their friends and family, and I, as a viewer, had a very emotional reaction because I could see all the blood and gore. If that was done in animation, I am not sure how I, as an audience member, would feel.

DF Spoilers / Adaptation Do's and Don'ts
« on: May 16, 2022, 08:09:11 PM »
Jim has talked several times that a new adaptation may be happening (in fact in a 2021 interview he said it may be here if not for COVID). Watching Wheel of Time, Shadow and Bone, and other book to TV adaptations got me thinking; what are some things that can change in an adaptation, and what are some things that should not be changed. Keeping in mind that some things will have to be changed, it is easy to print words on a page, but it is much harder (and more expensive) to do a lot of animation or CGI. With that in mind if there is another adaptation we as fans (especially us mega-fans) need to be willing and acknowledge the need for compromise or recognize that not everything will be just like the books.  Here are some of my thoughts, but looking forward to hearing what everyone's thoughts are!

Can Change:
Harry being super tall, keep him tall but does not need to be NBA tall
Details of books - setting of minor fights/conversations (can't change anything major but not everything needs to go down just as in the books)
Give some more screen time to other characters have parts of some episodes from Murphy or Eb's perspective (similar to some of the short stories, we could see how other people view Dresden)

Don't Change:
Character's backstory, first interactions, motivations
How magic looks/works
Sue coming alive in DB

DF Spoilers / Re: Is Harry going back to his roots a good thing?
« on: April 27, 2022, 11:01:02 PM »
I'm not sure that Harry is going back to his roots. At the end of Battle Ground, Harry has a conversation with Michael and says something along the line of (sorry don't have my book with me right now)  "Something has to change. Marcone was ready; he prepared. Without him, we would have lost. I can do more; I have to do more." I think that this next stage in Harry's life will be preparing him and his city for the next fight. We can see this with the gargoyles in the Christmas story. Yes, he is back in the same location as he once was, but his life situations are completely different. Harry does not have the time to solve every missing person case or lost item that people call about. Instead, his work will be for Never Never superpowers (fairies, old gods, ext.) or find items to increase his own power or that of his allies. The one thing that will remain constant will be that Harry will do everything in his power to protect his family.

DF Spoilers / Re: Small Favor Reread: Who Has Thorned Namshiel?
« on: April 25, 2022, 08:49:03 PM »
However I don't think Marcone has had the coin all that long, he was too clumsy doing the magic.

How was he clumsy? He was able to perform advanced teleportation, create many and varying types of shields at the same time, and made concrete out of base elements. The only slightly clumsy thing he did was make the teacup top-heavy.

I think Marcone held off on accepting it, because he did have some fear of it, but when Chicago was under attack and he stood to lose everything, he picked it up, because he felt he needed to.

I disagree that Marcone picked up Namshiel during PT/BG, I think Marcone trained with Namshiel for at least a year or two before BG. I agree that Marcone spent some time debating the pros and cons and researching before deciding to officially pick up the coin. In fact, I bet he spend some time making a formal contract with Namshiel and his abilities are at least a little reserved in order to have Macone stay in control. But there is no way that he would have worked as well as he did with Namshiel in the fight against Ethniu if that was the first time he picked up the coin.

Does anyone know the plot or when The Law takes place in the timeline?

DF Spoilers / Re: Mouse & the Castle

Maybe Mouse cheats by considering being home when he is with the people he loves not being in a physical location. So even though Mouse is far away from Harry's apartment in Changes because he is by Harry he is still "home."

DF Spoilers / Re: Who is the Lord of Slowest Terror?

“Slowest Terror” suspiciously sounds like “boredom” it’s the boring god?

What about Time. Could it be a Time god? Or even time itself?

DF Spoilers / Re: Are Soul gazes inherently subjective?
« on: March 31, 2022, 07:54:25 PM »
Best example is Eb and Harry, Eb seemed to know exactly what sixteen year old Harry was about, but sixteen year old Harry saw nothing as far as Eb being his grandfather, or that Eb was the White Council's hit man.

Eb would have taken charge of Harry no matter what the soul gaze showed. As for what Harry saw, I would say that Eb's identity/being is not in being a grandfather nor is it being a hitman. I would guess it's similar to Rawlins in being strong, steady, and protective.

I have toyed with the idea that Starborn are part outsider and that is why they are not affected by outsider powers. With this line of thought in mind, it makes sense that Starborn are then created to lead outsider armies because as humans (or part humans) they have the ability to pull in vast numbers of outsiders and if the Starborn can bring up a Banner they will need to be protected from the in-humanness of the outsider minds. This however is a double-edged sword in that the Starborns are able to have greater ability and effectiveness over the outsiders, but the advantage still lies with the outsiders because all they need is one Starborn with one Banner to cause major damage.
