DF Spoilers / The Mother's Cottage
« on: January 07, 2024, 02:59:42 AM »
During a recent reread of Summer Knight, I noticed a strange detail that Harry pointed out about the Mother's Cottage. It had a Snowflake on the front door. This cottage is where both of the Mother's live so why is there a snowflake on the door? This is a small detail, but I find it interesting. Maybe Mother Summer once lived in a different house? If so why did she move?

DF Spoilers / Did Butters break the Laws of Magic?
« on: September 15, 2023, 03:02:36 AM »
I am rereading Summer Knight and came to the part where the Mind Fog was released into the supermarket and Harry calls the Fog illegal. Now that reminded me of Skin Game where Butters had the globes of Mind Fog. Butters was using them against Binder's goons but I'd bet this wasn't the first time he used them. If so could Butters be in violation of the Laws of Magic?

DF Spoilers / Explanation behind Harry's ID?
« on: December 31, 2022, 04:47:10 PM »
In a reread of DB I came to the part where Harry was talking with his ID about the decision to release Lasciel for assistance, and Harry's ID described him as:

Quote
"I'm simply the more primal essence of yourself. The one most concerned with such matters as food. Survival." His dark eyes flickered idly over Lasciel. "Mating"

This reminded me of another Harry we meet in the future. Winter Knight Harry. Winter Knight Harry's priorities are very similar to ID Harry's priorities. Which brought me to my next question, where did the ID come from? The best answer I could come up with (admittedly, this is a stretch), but ID is the echo of himself that Harry creates when time traveling. We know that time travel is dangerous and when used at a large enough scale (CD attack on Demonreach), it creates ripples in time. We don't know of any other wizard with an ID, so it might be unique to Harry (no way of knowing for sure). If that is true, then we need to look at unique things that Harry has done, will do, or is. I don't think anything he has done (except maybe dying) that would create a second version of himself. If it was his death, I would imagine the ID would only appear after he is revived. We know per WOJ that Harry will break every law of magic, so my echo through time theory is possible. It could be a starborn thing, but I don't think that fits with what else we know about being starborn. It could also be the fulcrum/destroyer part of Harry, and the ID is what destroyer Harry will look like, and the ID is trying to "come out" sooner.

Again I know this is all a stretch but interested to hear your thoughts.

DF Spoilers / Easy defense against the Eye
« on: December 26, 2022, 04:36:26 PM »
I got to thinking about magic circles, and my understanding of them is that a magic circle is a basic yet effective defense against any form of magic. I believe we have seen Butters use a defensive circle at least once in the series (sorry don't have books with me right now). It takes more complex circles to hold or bind entities, but a simple circle imbued with blood can block magic until a physical object breaks the "plane" of the circle. With that understanding, could a magic circle be used to block a direct shot from the Eye? In other words could Harry (or any other mortal wizard) simply use a circle to block the eye?

DF Spoilers / Who else is out there?
« on: December 04, 2022, 04:26:36 PM »
During a recent reread of BG one of Eb's lines stuck out to me.
Quote
Not everybody, boy. Not even close.
Battle Ground page 53 (hardback). So my question is, who or what else is out there? I know we haven't seen many gods or demon kings, but while there are many parthenons I feel like there is more out there that we haven't seen or thought about. Doing some quick math, there were 13 groups active in the defensive (White Council, White Court, Winter Court, Summer Court, Ghouls, Mortals, Svartalves, Odin/Vadderung, Forest People, Erlking, Archive, Knights of the Cross, Ferrovax) if these major groups are not even close to the whole of the supernatural who else is there and how many groups haven't we seen? Or who do you want to see?

DF Spoilers / Personality and Magic Affinity
« on: July 30, 2022, 05:33:27 PM »
With the recent thread on minor talents, it got me thinking about what causes someone to be better at some elements than others. I wonder if personality has a role in this? Harry is very emotional and can go on rampages. Fire is very destructive, spreads quickly, and can rampage. On the other hand, Morgan was very sturdy and had a strong belief in the law, and was a very talented earth mage. Earth is very much the same.

DF Spoilers / Adaptation Do's and Don'ts
« on: May 16, 2022, 08:09:11 PM »
Jim has talked several times that a new adaptation may be happening (in fact in a 2021 interview he said it may be here if not for COVID). Watching Wheel of Time, Shadow and Bone, and other book to TV adaptations got me thinking; what are some things that can change in an adaptation, and what are some things that should not be changed. Keeping in mind that some things will have to be changed, it is easy to print words on a page, but it is much harder (and more expensive) to do a lot of animation or CGI. With that in mind if there is another adaptation we as fans (especially us mega-fans) need to be willing and acknowledge the need for compromise or recognize that not everything will be just like the books.  Here are some of my thoughts, but looking forward to hearing what everyone's thoughts are!

Can Change:
Harry being super tall, keep him tall but does not need to be NBA tall
Details of books - setting of minor fights/conversations (can't change anything major but not everything needs to go down just as in the books)
Give some more screen time to other characters have parts of some episodes from Murphy or Eb's perspective (similar to some of the short stories, we could see how other people view Dresden)

Don't Change:
Character's backstory, first interactions, motivations
How magic looks/works
Sue coming alive in DB

DF Spoilers / Demonreach's spells and Turn Coat
« on: February 17, 2022, 05:16:34 AM »
I am currently re-reading Turn Coat, and I came across a very interesting line when the Naagloshii encountered the spells around the cottage and tower (page 447 of the paperback)
Quote
It fell back from the tower, clearly frustrated, and just as clearly familiar with the symbols that allowed the stones to shed the power of the skinwalker as swiftly and as easily as they shed rainwater.

This appears to say that Shagnasty has seen spells like this before, AKA Merlin's work. So where else could he have seen this work? We know that the Naagloshii are based in the American Southwest, and typically Merlin lore comes out of Europe, so did Merlin do more spell work in America, or did the Naagloshii travel across the pond to Europe sometime. Also, any ideas what else would require this complex level of spell work to be laid down?

DF Spoilers / Fairy Godmothers
« on: January 16, 2022, 01:10:20 AM »
We know that Lea is Harry's Fairy Godmother due to a bargain that Margaret struck with her. However, the specifics are unknown to us currently. Harry benefits from Lea's protection garden in the Nevernever, when Lea continued Molly's apprenticeship, and by holding onto Margaret's red gem. Outside of these three areas, I can't think of any time when Lea did something to help Harry without Harry making a bargain of his own. So my questions are 1) What does it take to get a Fairy Godmother and can any Fae become one and 2) Margaret purposefully made a bargain with Lea, what benefits (other than those mentioned above) have or may come from said bargain?

DF Spoilers / Demonreach and the WC
« on: December 06, 2021, 07:16:56 PM »
There has been a lot of speculation about the White Council and a possible connection with the Senior Council. Regardless of the truth in that debate, what is known and clear is that the Senior Council (and maybe other members as well) know about Demonreach and are afraid of its power. After all, that was the main reason why the entire Council fought against Kemmler, to prevent him from returning to the Island. So my question is since the Council knew of the Island's power and were afraid of it, why didn't they have one of their own people bind it? Why would they leave that power open for any foolish young wizard to capture it for themselves?

DF Spoilers / Thomas's Cell
« on: October 15, 2021, 09:25:36 PM »
Quote
"Contemplation," I responded quietly. "He is to be shielded from any communication with other prisoners not enduring the same protocol."

Quote
"There was one prisoner held below in a kind of unique stasis, something that could most closely be considered sleep, though he could also awaken and perform limited communications for short periods of time."
Page 322 Peace Talks Hardback addition

On a recent re-read of PT, I came across these two almost through away lines, but I think they could have large story implications. I assume the original prisoner being held in status is the one from Skin Game. Assuming this is correct, then Thomas can talk with that prisoner. Will this be a good or bad thing for them both? What story things might come up because of it? Thoughts?

DF Spoilers / White Council Top Members
« on: September 15, 2021, 09:58:50 PM »
Harry is a powerhouse in terms of human wizards. But how powerful is he regarding the White Council (assuming he finds a way back into the Council or in comparison to the Council)? In the early books, Harry has said that he is among the 30-40 most powerful White Council Wizards. However, I do not remember Harry saying anything more recently about his power rankings in regard to the other wizards. Between the war with the Red Court, the massacre in Sicily, battle with the Mistfiend, and battles with the Fomor the Warden Old Guard has been decimated, two senior council members were killed, and other non-warden wizards were killed. With all the recent death how does Harry stack up? Is he top 20? 15? 10? Other?

DF Spoilers / About the naagloshii
« on: August 29, 2021, 08:18:14 PM »
I have always been confused about what exactly the Naagloshii are as a race. In the books, there have been references to the "Holy People" and how the Naagloshii were supposed to be messengers but fell away from their original purpose. So are the Naagloshii a form of fallen angels, or are they something older such as the spawn of an Old One?

DF Spoilers / Summoning TWG WAG
« on: August 06, 2021, 02:55:14 AM »
I was recently thinking about Skin Game and the 5 artifacts/weapons in the vault. We know that each artifact is powerful, but why were all 5 together, and why were they in an armory? We know that Mab wanted Harry to get the artifacts to help her in the battle with the Outsiders but are they powerful enough to make that much of a large-scale difference? I'm wondering if the 5 artifacts can be used to summon The White God. During the BAT, when all hope seems lost, Harry will summon TWG to banish the Outsiders back beyond the Outergates, winning the battle. This could maybe also be interpreted as the Second Comming of Christ.

DF Spoilers / Bob's missing years
« on: July 21, 2021, 03:59:42 AM »
Does anyone have any theories about where Bob was during Harry's training with Eb or before? If I remember correctly, Harry took Bob from Justin's house after he killed Justin. However, where was Bob during Harry's trial or during Harry's time with Eb? Bob is known as a powerful and dangerous spirit, and there is no way either the Council or Eb would allow it to remain in Harry's possession. Harry must have hidden Bob from the council and Eb and regained him sometime after he left Eb. So the question remains where was Bob during those years?
