Might be worth a stunt/power to do it, perhaps?

After considering the different solutions, I actually really like Haru's. I think it strikes a very good balance between the books and the game mechanics. Think that'll be the one I use!

Thank you gentlemen for your helpful insight and suggestions. This is why I love this community. (tips hat)

DFRPG / Enchanted Items: Multiple Uses At Once?
« on: March 29, 2015, 02:13:27 AM »
So, can't believe this hadn't occurred to me until today, but...

Was wondering how folks here would handle an enchanted item built for an attack spell that had multiple uses triggering all of said uses at once. Let's use an example.

Harry's later Force Rings, the ones stacked on each other? He can trigger just a few, or all of them at the same time. To me, this is modeled best by thinking of them as having multiple uses, or a high frequency count. But when he triggers them all at the same time, he's using every single frequency use at the same time for a really big attack.

Would you allow it? I think I would. It's a big attack, but once you've used it... well. Done. You've got nothing left there - you've completely taken that item out of the game for the rest of the session. Thoughts?

DFRPG / A Few Questions About Spellcasting Power
« on: March 27, 2015, 02:27:28 AM »
(tips hat)

Long time RP'er and general DFRPG fan here. I had a question I've been trying to wrap my head around, I was hoping I could get some answers from the community.

  • How do you handle drawing in power from the environment for an evocation? We've seen a couple of cases in the book where Harry's done it - Storm Front = Lightning Scene, Harry's Gravity Spell, Ley Lines?
  • Do you let your players Tag aspects and spend Fate Points for access to more power than they could typically access without accruing stress? Like, say their Conviction is (+5), they got up to that limit, they could tag a Fate point for 2 more power without having to pay the extra stress?
  • Do you let your player's split casting a spell across exchanges? There's an example for this in the Paranet Papers, via Propless Magic. My thought is if you could do it that way when you're hampered, it would make sense that you could potentially do it in combat. The obvious liability would be having to sit there in live combat spending your turn powering up, so to speak.

Went today. Jim's talk was awesome. I'll be the guy walking around with a dude dressed as Harry. I'm the Will Borden to his Harry Dresden.

See y'all tomorrow, folks!

Sorry for the double post, but edited! Also, considering taking Holy Touch to up the actual combat ability?

Oops. Mucked up the skills, thanks for pointing that out.

Also, in response to the fighting so well - in retrospect, I really *should* have added that to the original summary. Boxing is his pastime, so your first idea was actually nearly spot on. It's why he's got athletics and endurance in his skill set. I think my problem when I was doing the skills was I was trying to build the character as I viewed him my head in comparison to the actual gameplay mechanics. I'll rearrange them (and fix them, while I'm at it) and see about doing what you suggested though.

General Information
Matthew is a country boy, raised in a small town on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. The son of a local pastor, he had been essentially raised on the Gospel. Far from doing what most do in such a situation, Matthew readily took to the word he was presented. It was a important place in his life, essentially the foundation for who and what he is. That said, growing up, Matthew has constantly been tempted by the things that he knows better than to touch. Sex, drugs, alcohol, it all just looks so appetizing...and, frankly, he hasn't always had the strength to say no to the temptations. Perhaps one of the greater reasons for this is the trauma of watching his father slowly withering away from cancer. He sometimes turned to the temptations that plagued his life as a way of escape, an out to the pain of watching the single most important man in his life die. With his father's dying words did Matthew find the strength to once again turn the back on such temptations, deciding to dedicate his life to helping prevent the very kinds of things that took away his father. He doesn't want to be the guy that simply ran away from the pain of life anymore. Eventually, he applied to John Hopkins and has been going to college with the hopes of becoming a doctor.

That's just a small sketch of what I have in my head for Matthew, and it's far from complete. Still, I was hoping for some feedback. I really don't want to...munchkin the character, hence why I left more refresh and less abilities and such. Thoughts and suggestions?

DFRPG / Re: Enchanted Items Patch - Important, holy crap!

A suggestion my group came up with recently:

Open up refinement (or something similar?) to anyone for Enchanted Item slots. The idea is that someone can make an item that other people can use, even pure vanilla mortals for example, but in-game they have no way of using them without hanging onto the maker's slots. So maybe this way the Local Neighborhood Wizard makes friends with the Cop Dealing With the Hairy. He doesn't want his friend to get killed, so he borrows his vest/clothing/etc., enchants it to protect the Cop. With this idea, the Cop could sport the enchanted item under his own slots.

...Doesn't that also mean, despite how long a wizard may adventure, it's technically impossible to have all skills at fair?

Aye, that was the idea. Taxing your hunger with the spellcasting, while dangerous, could be a damn good way to explain the Vampiric types especially dangerous and potent magic, for example.

So, after that little mess with enchanted items, this time I'm playing with the idea of hunger - we're using a White Court Spellcaster for the example. The idea is pretty simple in theory - a White Court Vampire could call on his Hunger to help with a particularly devastating spell. The way he'd do this is absorbing any backlash stress to his Hunger track. But only wizards (who obviously don't have a hunger track) are used in the example, so it's noted that they can take the stress as physical or mental. You've probably figured out my question by now: Can White Court Spellcasters take backlash to their Hunger track?

Aye, what Fred said - with the example I used, the character was minimizing his spellcasting and versatility. That is, he doesn't have any Foci or other enchanted item slots to make him more adaptable to other situations. That said, he's certainly not blatantly open - he can still cast blocks, after all, though they may not be as effective as they could be.
