DFRPG / Bringing your pre-gen'd character into a PBP / online game
« on: October 01, 2010, 03:46:02 PM »
Someone brought up this point on the play-by-post board, and it turned some gears in my head:

When most PBP / online games recruit, the first thing that happens is everyone throws their characters into the thread. Some are just concepts, but more often they're pretty much complete, to the point where really, we're massaging backstory to fit the aspects (which are already filled in).

That's cool:

1. its one way for the GM to vet players coming in from the wild,
2. we've done it that way for 50 years (AD&D, GURPS, Hero, ect ect ect) and its done all right...

But I just can't help but wonder... it seems to completely hijack the "collaborative / character generation as play / together we create the awesome / the rpg is not the story of me, it is the story of us" intent of DFRPG's city/character generation process.

Wanted to throw it out there as food for thought, and wondered what the rest of y'all think.

DFRPG / City Creation
« on: September 29, 2010, 12:56:29 AM »
For those of you who've sat down with you groups and run through the city creation process - how many sessions did it take? Was there creative burnout, would you have split it into two, did you find yourselves going back to refine some of it...?

We're about to go through it and I thought it'd be cool to cull some best practices out of the collective experience here.

3. Day/Night
4. Circles (sometimes, according to Bob...)
5. ...?

Anything else?

DFRPG / GM's advice in Vol 1 YS - under-rated awesomeness
« on: September 13, 2010, 04:40:25 PM »
Just wanted to say how much I appreciate the GM's advice on how to run the DFRPG - the information in the back of vol 1 - and not just in there, but sprinkled throughout the book - rarely is specific to the Dresden Files, but is easily applied to other games as well. Spirit of the Century is much the same way - I got SotC because of the DFRPG and its a tome that's full of wise and sage advice as well.

Probably the biggest thing I've learned from it is how to interpret failure so that its not an outright fail, but a complication, or it adds a twist, or it changes the consequence & fallout. Its these things that push a story along, keep your players engaged and makes a scene compelling.

What are your go-to GM resources to help you hone your craft?

Do wizards stand by and twiddle their thumbs? What's would be the White Council's official response? And the individual wizards? The fay just stay out of the way and hide out in the Nevernever? ie. how involved does the supernatural get in the affairs of mortals?

I'd assume vampires are always in there and somehow profiting from it, but even them.

?

Edited to warn of possible spoilers

DFRPG / CCTV surveillance - effects on non-mortal PCs
« on: September 04, 2010, 03:33:09 AM »
Any ideas or commentary on how CCTV's would work on

a) creatures of the nevernever
b) vamps (any court)
c) wizards (besides those hexing them on purposely)
d) fae
e) fairies like Toots
f) non-fay / not-mortal beasties - werewolves, ghouls

Running a game in London where things are under surveillance and I wondered what kind of effect that would have!

DFRPG / London Calling!
« on: August 29, 2010, 02:15:42 AM »
Is there anyone playing in a Dresdenized version of London and have city notes they're willing to share or point a link to? I'd be more than happy to reciprocate once our group gets through the same process.

DFRPG / A Shopping List Of Consequences
« on: August 19, 2010, 06:36:23 PM »
The list on YS204 is a good start, but I'm like to see what others have had in their games, what the players and GM's have come up with, or any that have been really memorable.

Would appreciate it if you would also include if they were mild, moderate or severe.

DFRPG / Fear As An Attack
« on: July 30, 2010, 09:58:04 PM »
So, looking at a supernatural beastie which radiates fear - is Incite Emotion (Fear) the way to simulate this? Is it an active attack action (it reads that way) and if so, is there a mechanism to make it 'always on' (add refresh cost?)

DFRPG / [Aspects] Compels for "... Just In A Nick Of Time!"
« on: July 21, 2010, 08:51:34 PM »
Aspect is for a character who just gets there, or barely gets there just in time to save someone, get things done, or just finish it under the wire. Obvious compels would be tasks that would benefit from finishing early ... don't, or complications come up that tend to shift the time increment towards satisfying this aspect.

Any others that come to mind? Or a better & flashier name?

DFRPG / [Aspects] Compels for Gun-Fu?

Any great ideas for compels on gun-fu? Feel free to pitch in some cool name ideas too :)

DFRPG / [Vancouver] Just picked up my book...
« on: July 17, 2010, 03:46:59 AM »
.... from a local gaming store here in Vancouver (the real Vancouver, BC, not a Vancouver Method copy... ;D) and y'know, what a great looking set of tomes. I've heard about the high production values and it still exceeded my expectations. To the Evil Hat team - congrats on a job well done, I'm looking forward to using these books for a long long time!

Cheers!

DFRPG / [DFRPG] Emissaries of Power... of a spirit of the City
« on: July 14, 2010, 08:32:22 AM »
Crafting up a submerged character who is tied to the Spirit of the City; before I get into what he can do though, I need to come up with some ideas on what a spirit of the City (a specific city, ie the one we're playing in) would want of an emissary.

ie. what is in it for the spirit to have an emissary?

To narrow down the focus I thought that perhaps there are multiple spirits of the City - one for each of its major themes or aspects - and different neighbourhoods or traits might have its own ideas as to what would be best. This would also imply that multiple emissaries can exist for the different aspects or themes that are strong enough to manifest a spirit, and they may not always get along.

Any ideas or input welcome...

DFRPG / Setting up a DFRPG group in Vancouver / GVRD area
« on: July 02, 2010, 05:06:00 AM »
Trying to gauge interest in forming a group to take on the DFRPG in Vancouver / GVRD / Lower Mainland (That's Vancouver BC, not Vancouver WA!)

I'm in the Tri-cities area but have car and can travel. Personally, my schedule is once every two weeks preferably on Sat night or Sun afternoon - but think it would be really neat if we filled in play in between with an online component.

I'm not a FATE expert but the DFRPG has convinced me to make the leap. Happy to GM/volunteer as long as the group is patient, but that's probably a bridge we'll cross when and if we get to it. Age disclaimer: I'm a "mature" gamer (mid 30's) but am young at heart :)

Looking forward to connecting with some local fans and Dresdenauts!
