DF Spoilers / Re: Red Court/The Eebs question...
« on: November 08, 2018, 08:55:42 PM »
The spell in Changes was boosted sufficiently to reach into the NN, but there was a WOJ that a few individuals in particularly remote / secured locations of the NN would have escaped.

My recollection of the WoJ is that it was more conditional than that. That is, if there were individuals in particularly remote / secured locations of the NN, they could have escaped. And yes, most have assumed that the Eebs are the top candidates for survival if survivors ever show up.

Are there even any other named rampire characters that were not killed "on screen?"

Why would Mab need Harry to draw Winter's forces off Summer's borders? Was she incapable of doing that herself?

From the story in the story:
Quote
For the past year, I and others like me had been working hard to teach [the Paranet] how to defend themselves.

So the story in the story took place no earlier than somewhere around a year after White Night occurred. Let's say 10-14 months. Assuming the accuracy of the rest of the timeline, that would place the story between It's My Birthday, Too (February 14, 8 ASF) and Heorot (October, 8 ASF). Wild Card takes place a "few months" after It's My Birthday, Too. So I'd say it takes place between March 1 and June 31 of 8 ASF, at the earliest.

Part of the problem is people usually don't mean 365 days or even 12 months when they say things like "for the past year." Another part of the problem is I can't even guess how long it took between the idea for the paranet and Harry and others like him going out to teach the paranetters. With those two sources of vagueness, we can only guess at the start of the time frame.

The only timing clues I can pick up on in the story encompassing a story are ones that place it after Proven Guilty. There is also a description of Harry's burned hand that may be useful.
Quote
t was a mass of old scars, and not the pretty kind. It had been burned, and badly, several years before. Wizards heal up better than regular folks, over the long term. I could move it again, and I had feeling back in parts of all the fingers.

I recall that Harry was given hope that his hand would work again in Dead Beat, but I don't recall the progress.

The class takes place between the about a year and a few months after White Night and a few months before whenever Billy finds Dresden's write up of the class and includes it in the RPG write up (somewhere between Small Favor and Turn Coat).

The bogart story probably takes place before Small Favor, and the class probably takes place shortly after Small Favor.

DF Spoilers / Re: Harry's lack of research
« on: November 05, 2018, 03:24:29 AM »
I agree. I'd at least try to figure everything I could out that was directly relevant to me.

But Harry really wants to know this stuff, then never looks into it. After Chauncey says that Harry has family and his parents were murdered, Harry chooses to ignore that information until he stumbles across his brother, his mother's murder, and later his grandfather. Seriously, what the fudge man.

He's still never looked into whether or not his dad was murdered and by who after all the other information turned out to be true.

Nah, there is WOJ that Mab sent the Fetches.

I think I vaguely remember that. Do you have that handy?

Sometimes I wonder about WOJ because I've seen Jim (on Youtube) say some stuff that was just wrong. The most recent example is that Harry looked at the Word of Kemmler with his Sight and that's how he could have performed a Dark Hollow in Changes. Jim himself says that he has about 12 versions of each book in his head, so maybe that's how it happened in one of the books that didn't end up being Dead Beat.

And also to add to your eight, LaFortier/Christos, Kemmler/Cowl, Kemmler/Grevane, Kemmler/Corpsetaker.

Do we know if any of them were actual master/apprentice relationships? Were any of the Kemmlerites confirmed apprentices, or were they just followers/disciples?

Cristos was LaFortier's protege according to Ebeneezer in Turn Coat.

A lot of that is explained by Harry's lack of introspection. A lot of it might be that he doesn't want to know. What if his mother was a horrible person? He probably wouldn't want to pay whatever price "people" are asking.

If it was me, I'd be digging for all sorts of information. For example, when he still had Bob, I'd be forcing Bob to read all sorts of science text books. I'm sure a thorough understanding of science and engineering would help with new and interesting magic. If I'd ever figured out how much information is on the internet, I'd find a way to use the internet, probably through Bob.

I do like the idea that TT Lady Molly appears in PG.  However, I like to maintain minimization of TT's effect on herself.  I think it has also been established that it was Mab that sent the Fetches.

I'm not sure if anything has "been established" as to what happened off page in Proven Guilty. There are some pretty well thought out theories. There are some generally favored ideas (like TT). There are some ideas likely, but not necessarily, debunked by later novels. And then, there are some pretty crazy ideas that some people believe wholeheartedly.

@ Con: Thanks. I knew there was something. I just couldn't remember what.

@ Yuillegan: I wouldn't even call my idea a theory. Just a "this is possible." It's just one of many things that could explain why Odin was involved. Just being Odin, and all that entails, could explain why he was involved. The assumption that all those masters and apprentices were related is a pretty big assumption. We know of at least eight master/apprentice relationships.

Only two of them are explicitly related by blood, with an additional two being related by law (which I can't imagine working for a bloodline curse). That's a 25 or 50% "wizards taught by family member" rate.

There are a lot of parallels between Odin and Harry. Odin is one of the prototypical wizards modern fantasy wizards are based on. Harry is a wizard. They both receive advice from a severed head. They both have died, gained knowledge, and returned. Odin lost his eye. Harry nearly lost an eye. And on top of all that, Butcher established an unbroken master/apprentice chain between them.

DF Spoilers / Re: Inconsistancy in Skin Game?
« on: November 03, 2018, 03:25:59 PM »
In one of the Q&A's in the first couple of pages here, Jim is talking about some inconsistencies being intentional and some being human error. A specific intentional inconsistency that he references is in the chapters in Changes where Molly messes with Harry's memories. I personally don't remember the inconsistency there.

This was brought up in response to a question about push-back from beta readers and editors.

We know he taught the original Merlin.

How do we know that? I recall reasoning that there were strong connections between Merlin and Odin, but I've been away from the boards for so long that I'm no longer conversant in a lot of the out of book information and theories.

I do recall that I've had the idea that Odin/Vadderung may be an ancestor of Harry's and that's why he was so involved in Chichen Itza. (What I remember about why I thought that):

Just to correct you there Snark Knight, fire hurts Corporeal Ghosts. Doesn't effect non-corporeal (i.e. sane ghosts). Doesn't hurt a naked soul either, otherwise everyone who burned to death would end up in a state of Oblivion. Don't believe there has been any example of it hurting the non-corporeal.

Sir Stuart, a non-corporeal, non-crazy, ghost was burned by fire in Ghost Story.

Thinking about it, AAAA Wizardry has to take place after White Night -- Harry is only sent out to the house explicitly on a tip from the Paranet.

I remembered that in the shower, where all the clearest thinking occurs, this morning.

Thanks for the help guys. When I get to reading it again, I'll put my thoughts on when I think it takes place here.

DF Spoilers / When Does AAAA Wizardry Take Place?

On her timeline, Priscellie says:
Quote
Somewhere between May of 9 ASF and the Summer of 10 ASF: AAAA Wizardry, the short story included in The Dresden Files RPG: Our World.
https://www.paranetonline.com/index.php/topic,1592.0.html

In the foreword to the Brief Cases edition of AAAA Wizardry, Jim says:
Quote
This next story is set just after the events, I believe, of Proven Guilty, where Harry Dresden has become impressed with the need to instruct the younger wizards around him.

Why does Priscellie have the story take place three to four years later than when Jim says he "believes" the story to have taken place? I assume she has reasons and those reasons make sense. The end of Jim's quote makes me think that Jim is referring to the class taking place just after Proven Guilty; not the story within the story. That would mean that Jim isn't referring to the inner story and Priscellie is referring to the outer story, which might solve the discrepancy.

I'm trying to setup my digital library so that I can just re-read all the stories, short and otherwise, in in-universe chronological order without having to constantly check which or whether a short story is next because, having already read them, I'm not worried about spoilers.
