DF Spoilers / Harry is most like (Favourite DC superhero)?
« on: October 23, 2017, 11:10:18 AM »
So who do you think he's most like?

The most obvious would be Batman. Both Batman and Dresden have a primary city filled with organised crime, that Batman has a tense but occasionally working relationship with in order to focuse on fighting the various chaotic and more insane characters that threaten his city.

As it stands Dresden even has his own Alfred, his own Arkham Asylum and his own Batcave. As well as a League of like minded heroes whom at one point or another were his students to one extent or another.

Of course the primary argument against this is Batmans chief trait as co leader of the justice league which is that he's non superpowered.  There's also the fact that Murphy is notably the only member without any superpowers whatsoever, an interest in stopping crime.

Plus there's the fact that Murphy shotgunned Batman when she formed the Dresden League, when Harry died, not disimilar to how the Justice League by Batman is formed in some versions after Supermans death. Though this could also be how Batman was presumed dead and both the Justice League and the Batfamily had to survive without him when Batman is presumed dead.

So is Harry just too OP to be Batman. Which speaking of OP well Superman would definitely come to mind. Particularly how his enemies have to be increasingly OP'd to be a threat to him. Except perhaps Lex Luthor who prefers to use his intellect and way too complex scheme's to ever actually pull off to fight his arch enemy. Not disimilar to Nicodemus, although to be honest why Harry is his arch nemesis when it really should be the KotC is kind of a thematic imbalance, but only slightly as they have been a consistent enemy every five years like clock work.

What both Superman and Batman have in common is that they're guardians of their respective cities that increasingly are left vulnerable by his responsibilities on an international and even interplanetary level. The difference being of course that Batman entrusts his city to his former pupils and allies who are more or less capable of protecting it in his absence, while relying on the Justice League for the international level threats and to some extent the interplanetary ones, while leaving the intergalactic threats to the Green Lanterns.

One other major difference is that so far as to my knowledge neither Batman or Superman have sworn allegiance to nor served any evil cruel torturous or murderous beings in exchange for power. At least not for any lengthy period of time. Although arguably each has done so at one point or another I guess. Batman with Ra's al Ghul in particular. Don't know Supermans lore well enough to pick an example off the top of my head. Did he ever swear allegiance to Zod?

Anyway in the end those are my two votes and why.

(It should be noted that Harry's smart mouth and pop culture references also make Flash and Hal Jordon prime candidates)

DF Spoilers / Psychology, Pietrovich and DuMorne
« on: October 20, 2017, 01:12:44 AM »
I was just wondering given that Psychology was just being invented by Carl Jung and SIgmund Freud at the time that DuMorne was an apprentice to Simon Pietrovich and in particular Psychology's effect on pre, during and post World War 1/ Russian Revolution. Several of Jung's notable theories took particular hold in Russia. Arguably the Soviet Union had more success with psychological experiments then the CIA did.

All of this seems a hell of a coincedence given DuMornes proficiency with min magic and enthrallment. Combined with what we know of Pietrovich in Paranet Papers. Not too mention the popular theory that Cowl is Simon Pietrovich himself.

How much influence did early Psychology have on Pietrovich and his apprentices at Archangel during this time. And did it contribute to DuMornes Enthrallment of Elaine.

Certainly DuMorne shows great psychological insight in perfectly manipulating Harry and Elaine as first loves, and despite Harry's well justified complaints DuMorne did teach both to be quite remarkable Wizards equal to or better than most Wardens. We also do know from Ghost Story that he does have happy memories of DuMorne and loved him a great deal.

I imagine The White Council would have been nervous about this growing practice of mundane meddling into peoples minds, souls, hearts, consciousness, fears, desires, dreams and subconsciousness. We know from Paranet Papers Simon Pietrovich got increasingly involved in mundane affairs around this time, we also know that a certain apprentice mind thralled an assassination attempt on Rasputin (where incidentally he was made Winter Knight) they certainly were the White Councils source of information in Eastern Europe.

The Brute Squad of Archangels had it's beginning here in World War 1 and the Russian Revolution and were active up until Kemmlers final defeat, when Justin DuMorne picked up a spirit of intellect as an aide. So given how active they were during psychology's rise in the late 19th and early to mid 20th century.

To what degree did SImon Pietrvich, Justin DuMorne and the Brute Squad of Archangel know of or Employ Psychology?

DF Spoilers / Archangels to Fallen Angels
« on: September 30, 2017, 07:23:32 AM »
Okay so across multiple denominations there are usually seven archangels the earliest source is book of Enoch. They are Michael (Sunday), Gabriel (Monday), Raphael (Tuesday), Uriel (Wednesday), Raguel (Thursday), Remiel (Friday; Who fell from Grace) and Sariel (Saturday)

The first four we know, interestingly some early myths attribute a Sammael with falling from Grace which could be either Remiel or Sariel depending on whose mispronouncing it with a heavy inflicted accent. I'm assuming the two got mixed up a lot by various translators over the years and may even have started out as the same being.

Similarly Raphael and Raguel who in addition to their similar names seem to share much the same duties. Both police demons and fallen angels binding them when they step over the line.

When I started this topic I was going to theorise two of the Archangels had either died or fallen with Lucifer. My main evidence being. Anduriel and Lasciel.

Thanks to a http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,45443.0.html which I encourage you to read as a thorough background for this topic.
Anduriel:Etymology:
Latin, An- (without) + Hebrew, Uri'el (Light of God).
"Shadow of God" or "God is My Shadow"
Griffyn612
Etymology:
Latin, An- (without) + Hebrew, Duri'el (God is My Home, I Live in Heaven).
"Apart From God" or "Fallen From Heaven"
peregrine
Etymology:
Combination of Andariel and Duriel (fictional angels from Diablo).
Dina
DF Title:
"Master of Shadows"

This is in addition to his title being Shadowmaster, which as Kringle confirmed means spy master. My theory is that Anduriel used by The Uriel. The one who killed firs borns and seven plagues of Egypt. He rebelled and changed his nature, his will to the point that he made himself for the opposite purpose he was for. Lucifer fearing a fellow Archangel in Hell banished him to the mortal plane.

Our current Uriel inherited the mantle and as the youngest Archangel can interact with particular humans more readily then the others can (which I imagine they're jealous about). Anduriels true goal therefore isn't the fight against Outsiders but to be released from his coin, back to his former glory and beyond. Which I suspect he originally didn't want competition from Outsiders, but by the end of the series will use them to further his goals betraying Nicodemus and his own nature once and for all.

Lasciel:Etymology:
Latin, lascivus (wanton) + Hebrew, El (God).
"Wanton(ness) of God"
Etymology:
Latin, lascivious (lustful) + Hebrew, El (God).
"Lustfulness of God"
DF Title:
"Seducer", "Webweaver", "Temptress"
Sigil:
"Reminiscent of an hourglass"
Combat Form:
"her clothing just . . . dissolved, like so much smoke, into a clinging, purplish mist that drifted around her in spiraling tendrils— not so much for modesty as for accent, yet for the most part, covering her most delicate parts with the same coyness as a fan dancer’s feathers."
Status of Coin:
Inactive (in Underworld of Hades)
Known Hosts:
Hannah Ascher
Lore Refs:
Possibly a thematic reference to the Babylonian goddess Ishtar.  Ishtar seduced and destroyed many lovers before being rejected by the hero Gilgamesh, who she then attempted to murder.  Ishtar was slain in the Underworld after removing her clothes to pass through the gates and becoming enraged.  (Later resurrected, when all sexual activity on Earth stopped in her absence.)
Lore Refs:
Sigil may be reference to a woman-as-spider/seducer motif, relating title of "Webweaver" to a black widow's thorax.

Now bear with me cause this ones slightly thinner. Lashiel is again a spy master though in choosing her own nature she was careful to select Webweaver and a spider as her sigil. Spider is also a term of a spymaster. But Webweaver has also enough nuance of definition to apply to magic as well. Weave a spell together was often done by weaving silk or needles in myth and folklore and was a basis of witchcraft.

In addition several myths of Lucifer's fall attribute it to his falling in love or atleast in lust depending on the version with a woman. In some versions she's a fellow angel, in others she's a demon in many of the original myths she was among the humans that the Grigori fell for. It's literally where the term falling in love comes from. Falling from the heavens from God's grace because you are so enraptured with love for a human. In any case in most modern adaption this figure Lucifer fell for is often Identified with Lilith- Adams first wife and according to some Lucifers first conversion into a demon.

I believe Jim took inspiration from these myths and created a sympathetic version of Lilith within the Dresden Files. I don't believe she was necessarily an Archangel but according to woj. She was one of the ones sitting on the fence during the rebellion possibly in part because of her torn love between God and Lucifer.

Finally lets look at Lucifer himself.

Lucifer:Non-DF Etymology:
Lucifer.  Latin, Lux (light) + Ferrous (bearing).
"Light-bearing" or "Lightbringer".
Non-literal: "Morningstar", "Daystar", "Shining One", "Shining Star."
Non-DF Etymology:
Satan.  Hebrew, Satan.
"Adversary".
Non-DF Etymology:
Samael.  Hebrew, Sama'el.
"Venom of God".
Warden John Marcone
DF Title:
"The Dark Prince", "The Prince of Fucking Darkness", "Father of Lies", "Darkest Shadow"
Warden John Marcone, Griffyn612, wizard nelson, peregrine
Lore Refs:
Fallen archangel or angel in most Judeo-Christian religious traditions.  Jinn in Islamic traditions.
Lore Refs:
Samael is regarded as a different entity, an archangel of death, in most contemporary sources.

ok note the bolded, underlined and italics section. Lux (light) Ferrous (Bearing). LightBearing. lets just switch them around a bit like Lasciel did in Dead Beat and create another anagram FerrousLux another word for Lux or Light by the way is Fax. FerrousFax= Ferrofax. = Mr. Ferro = One of the Last true remaining Dragons = Lucifer and Sammael are often both equated as serpents who can fly with the gift of fire= Dragon. Capital D.

oh and also Michael Carpenter is clearly Michael the Archangel made human as a reward so he can have a righteous life on earth with a family he loves and cares for.

DF Spoilers / Best adaptions of myth and folklore
« on: September 28, 2017, 04:20:09 AM »
Ok so I'm not going to make a poll yet as they're are too many to count, but personally I'm going to go with Rise of the Guardians.

Russian Warrior Santa with tattoos was brilliant.

Aussie Easter Bunny was good too, cause we do have a lot of rabbits. Though farmers hate them.

Sandman and tooth Faerie were Brilliant too.

Anyone else think Pitch Black would make for the perfect Outsider like Nemesis?

Jack Frost himself was great as a Canadian and counter point with the other northern figure of Russian Santa.

Santa's Yeti bodyguards and minion elves were great too. I want to apply it to the dresden verse and have Kringle have a Fae army of Yeti's and Svartalves in a toy factory fortress. He's the counter point to the Erlking and his Goblin army so it'd make sense.

Anyway what's your favourite modern adpation of myth and folklore. Other than Dresdenfiles. Special mention to Once Upon a Time.

DF Spoilers / Grimm Fairy Tales
« on: September 24, 2017, 02:14:08 AM »
I've downloaded half a dozen versions on kindle I've yet to find one with anything 'grimm' the definitional word in them nor one that isn't heavily Christianised. At least one tale is consistant in that it replaces a powerful Fae Godmother with the Virgin Mary. There's also tales about a girl in heaven who unlocked the thirteenth door when she was told not to but she was 14 and curious so she did and the Virgin Mary cast her down from heaven, muted her and kidnapped three of her children until she repented.

Yet to find the legendary Grimm and Gruesome tales of Cinderella's Step-sisters cutting off their own feet. I've download 1810 and 1812 translations, but I still seem to be getting the watered down version. Even though a couple are clearly academic standard discussing the merits and nuances of a particular word in German translated to English. Love those footnotes.

Anybody got any idea where I can find the legendary Grimm and Gruesome Fairy Tales that Mab commissioned?

Also so far very little mention of the Sidhe or any beings that could be them. Though I see a few Toot like sprites pop up now and again.

DF Spoilers / Denarian Dresden
« on: September 07, 2017, 06:54:48 PM »
Okay so we've got an expanded answer on what would've happened if Dresden had taken up Lasciels coin in Changes, instead of Mab or Kemmler's Darkhallow. I personally think he should have gone with Lasciel as a better choice than Mab.

First there's this WOJ from a Reddit AMA last year.

Quote from: jim butcher
Scanning back on it, if the Denarians had been involved, Harry would probably have had to lean more toward Lasciel as his get-out-of-paralysis-free card, and Nicodemus as his new best frenemy rather than Mab, in order to make the whole thing work out. He would have instantly come into conflict with Sanya, as well, over the possession of the Swords, and maybe with Murphy as well. Molly would have had to make a really horrible choice at that point, and probably would have walked out of it even more guilty and more ready to destroy herself after Harry's shooting. She probably would have wound up a Denarian herself.

Wow, that's a dark story. Who would come up with something like that? What's wrong with you?

Now here's me transcribing what Jim has said recently in the Dragon Con vide with thanks to Priscille for recording it. Looking forward to the fan video of Dresden vs Vampires!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQDTvMv1otI
Quote from: jim butcher dragon con 2017 38-41 minutes in
He chose Mab as the most predictable evil not the least evil but the most reliable one

"Had he gone with Lasciel essentially she would have been his black magic tutor, Bob would've had a huge crush she would've been around him all the time it would've been her keeping him alive in the next book, although it would've been a slightly different book and then he would've been dealing with Nicodemus as a frenemies, on a consistancy basis he still had to deal with them as frenemies in Skin Game anyway so.

It would've been much different he would've had much different temptations Lasciel would've been trying to isolate him from his friends, actively isolating him unlike Mab whose waiting on entropy doing the job for her. It would've been a much harsher story but a lot more sex too.. sales would've been fine.

My reasoning for wanting Lasciel is because I enjoyed her character through the books she appeared with in fact they were my favourite things about the books she appeared in. Her conversations with Harry were great and inticing, and she really was useful as resevoir of information and recording.

I also find Lasciel to be a much more interesting character and characterisation than Mab.

Also I feel like Jim knows more about Angelic Folklore than Faery Folklore, and I'm very much interested on his characterisations of Angelic types, despite being an Atheist myself. Getting an Atheist interested in books revolving around God even fictional portrayals of them isn't easy.

I also would've loved to find more about the various Denarians both as a whole and as individuals and finally learn a few more names to add to the compendium.

Finally we have these series of hints in which Lash may make a comback. She definitely would've featured more prominently in a series featuring Lasciel.
Quote from: Jim Butcher
What roll will Lasciel play in future books?
That's going to be another one of those where I go "Hahaha, I know and you don't" because, you know, it's the whole, I want to provide for my family thing.  Were're not done with Lasciel.  We might not even be totally done with Lash, but we will have to see how that goes.
2009 Chicago signing:
Q:  Will we see Lash or Lasciel again?
A:  Lasciel’s story is not over.  And keep in mind what’s said about ‘a woman scorned.’  Also keep in mind that Lasciel is NOT Lash; Lasciel did not reabsorb the entity that Harry actually changed. (Yes, he use those words “that Harry actually changed.”)
2009 Independence signing
Q:  Was the voice in Harry’s head at the end of White Night (when he was playing guitar) a sign that Lash is still there?
A:  Not really.  But Lash’s story isn’t done.
2008 Comic-Con Q&A: @ about 6:11
Q:  Does Lasciel's shadow get to heaven because she redeemed herself?
A:  The answer to that is so much more complicated than is easy to give, especially without giving out extra story and ruining the fun.  No.  Lasciel's spirit didn't go to heaven.  And now, (sing song) I'm not gona tell you. *mutters about heroin for writers*  But it will come out, don't worry the story will be there.

So yes personally I'd have been interested to see how things would've turned out had Harry gone down this route.

DF Spoilers / White Court, Venatori and Kemmler
« on: August 23, 2017, 03:37:15 AM »
So we know the White Court are the primary caretakers of the Venatores whose purpose it is to wiped out world threatening supernatural beings and organisations through Black Ops. My question is who and what beings/organisations have they been succesful in doing this too?

Top Three Contenders.
-Black Court
-Various Fomor Entities that banded together to create the Fomor

My personal theory:

Kemmler.

Think about it.

We know Lara organised the publishing of Bram Stoker's book a manual on killing Black Court. Which if you think about it was inspired by the reverse status quo of the Ventori which was destroy all books with knowledge of a creature. NOt too mention someone had to lead all the raging mobs to the various Black Court Nests.

The Black Court was an extensive organisation with 30 Elders capable of taking on Mab are we expected to believe the raging Mob's happened upon their nests?

We know Kemmler had links to the Black Court and that his Necromancy and the Darkhallow are tied to the Black Court and their Ascension Rite.

We know that the Kemmler published three books of which their aren't very many copies of any left alone the last copy of the Word of Kemmler. That is precisely Venatori MO.

Kemmler was getting majorly powerful, enough to perform the Darkhallow. Someone would have had to have kept tipping the White Council off to where he was each time he rose from the grave.

It also explains some of Thomas's actions during Dead Beat. Urging Harry to contact the White Council for instance.

So who else do you think the Venatori have succesfully or partially succesfully taken down. I guess we can include Thomas's assist in taking down the Red Court as one and Lara's support in the aftermath.

Think they'll someday succeed in making humanity forget the Titans?

DF Spoilers / Hierarchy of the Courts
« on: August 22, 2017, 05:37:18 AM »
WARNING: Lengthy post.

So I've been thinking about Mab and the Winter Court and what the higher members of a court owe their Sovereign or Sovereigns.

Summer Knight- Lea sells Harry’s debt to Mab to exchange a balance for the power that Morgana’s Athame gave her. Which gives Mab power over Harry.
We also know that Lord Marshall Talon had to obey Summer Lady Aurora even when she was directly working against her own Court.
Similarly Lloyd had to obey Maeve's orders, although he did show signs of rebellion and was working for Aurora which is where his Free Will comes into play.
Blood Rites-
Dead Beat- Harry summons Leanansidhe, but gets Mab instead.
Quote from: Dead Beat Chapter Twenty One
“Disturb me? Hardly. I am here only to fulfil the duties I have been obliged to take upon myself. It is no fault of thine that this summons reached mine ears”
Quote from: Dead Beat Chapter Twenty One
“My vassal’s oaths and bargains are binding upon me, so long as I restrain her from fulfilling them.”
“Does that mean that you will help me?” I asked.
“It means that I will give you what she might give you” Mab said and speak what knowledge she might have spoken to you were she here in flesh, rather than in proxy”

Proven Guilty- is a mess and everyone likes discussing it, but I'll keep it brief. Lily has Fix as a loyal retainer, Maeve tried to enact revenge on the Werewolf's using Jenny Greenteeth her loyal Handmaiden at this point thanks to Nemfection was able to lie through her teeth. Leanansidhe had requested the Mab cure her of Nemfection through Winter Torture. Finally Lilly was able to give Harry a Summer Boon despite Titania's hatred of him.

White Night- see's Lara Raith capturing the Little Folk to use as lanterns as a calculated insult against Faerie to see if the debts and obligations of Lord and Master and Peasant folk still applied. Dresden then gets reputation and a boost in the Za Lord's Guard, making Toot more powerful as his name and rank grow.

Small Favour- The Gruff's seem to be Titania's personal order of hit men, however Eldest Gruff can divert Titania's direct order enough so that he fulfils another debt and order to the Summer Court, like getting a frosty doughnut with sprinkles on it. Eldest Gruff is also able to advise Titania against killing Harry. Mab also orders the Grimalkin to speak for her as she’s too in wounded rage to speak.

Changes- Mab is able to send two retainers with full Winter powers at their disposal to fight and wipe out the Red Court. Lea is used as a sock puppet to speak for Mab, but is reprimanded when she speaks out of turn.

Quote from: Changes Chapter Thirty
"It is not for my handmaiden to judge or question me, nor to speak for me upon her own account"

Lea is allowed "to indulge herself".
Quote from: Changes Chapter Thirty One
"I  give thee this adviser fir thy final quest, sir Knight. My handmaiden is among the most powerful beings in all of my Winter, second only to myself"
Lea's warmer, more languid voice came from her lips as she asked, "My queen to what degree am I permitted to act?"
I thought I saw the fell light gleam on Mab's teeth as she said "You may indulge yourself"
Erlking plays wordplay of guest right and obligation with Harry in his Hall but warns Harry to summon Mab’s name thrice as that would be an invasion of his territory and against the little games of protocol.

Ghost Story- Mab is able with all of her strength combine it with Demonreach, Bonnea "the parasite" and Uriel Preserve Harry's life force until his Soul reenters it, all the while taking down a potential threat in Corpsetaker and the Fomor. Lea later confirms in Ghost Story that Mab would not have been able to order Lea to fight the Red Court as she did. That Lea owed the Red Court a debt of violence for making her nemfected.
Quote from: Ghost Story p347
“Tsk. In all of Winter, I am second in power only to Mab which she has allowed because I have incurred with it proportionate obligation to her. She is my dearest enemy, but even I do not owe Mab so much. I helped you as much as I did, sweet child, because I owed you for collecting a portion of my due justice from Bianca” The Leanansidh said. Her eyes grew wider, wilder. “The rest I took from the little whore’s masters. Though I admit, I hadn’t expected the collection to be quite so thorough.”

Lea also confirms in this scene that Faerie's can't act without a balancing act in return.
Quote from: Ghost Story p346
"Indeed" she said beaming at me. "There must be balance sweet godchild. Always balance. Never take a thing without giving such a thing in return; never give a favor without collecting one in return. All reality depends on balance"

Plus there’s this this little tidbit
Quote from: Ghost Story p347-348
If Lea had been the high priestess of murder, bloodlust, scheming and manipulation, then Mab was the Goddess my godmother worshipped. Come to think of it that was probably an apt description of their relationship.
Leanansidhe is also training Molly is a back up Winter Lady at this point.

Cold Days- Mab obligate’s Kringle, Eldest Gruff and The Erlking to attend her new Winter Knight's Birthday Party.
Meanwhile The Redcap is allowed to directly challenge the Winter Knight, Mab's latest toy. The Redcap is allowed to continue to pursue this grudge at the behest of Maeve despite Harry working on Mab's direct orders.
The Mother’s have shared insight or consciousness and know everything their counter part knows within the Courts. They also look over deadly world plague’s until time for their release.
Cat Sith is obligated and ordered to assist Harry in anyway Harry requests and does so at great lengths.
Kringle has some fun on the Wildhunt fighting Outsiders, helping fulfill the Winter Knight's mission.

Skin Game- Mab owe's Nicodemus a debt as she utilised him before she had realised she could promote Leansidhe higher in her court. Kringle reveals that if Mab had called upon Vadderung she would have been told to get in line.
Quote from: Skin Game chapter Forty Four
"The Winter Knight called for me in his official capacity as an agent of the Winter Court. Mab has the right to summon Kringle. If she’d called for Vadderung, I'd have told her to get in line"
….
“Legally speaking, Kringle and Vadderung are two entirely different people who simply happen to reside in the same body” he replied
“That’s just a fiction” I said “a little game of protocol”
“Little games of protocol are how one shows respect, especially to those with whom one does not get along famously well. It can be tedious, but generally is less trouble than a duel would be.”

Ok so that’s all the evidence we have of hierarchy, obligations and favours within the Faerie Courts in the books proper.
Now if we take Mab’s statement that Lea is second in Winter as literal truth which it has to be as she can’t make a direct outright lie. Then Lea is even more powerful than Maeve the Winter Lady, despite the fact that the Ladies are sovereigns and immortals.
Take this and add what we know about Kringle combined with this WOJ
Quote from: Jim Butcher
Where are the Farie kings?  Do they exist?
Yes they do.  The Erlking as sort of the Hunter king, and Santa Clause, the Winter king who is not the commercial Santa Clause.  The kings are sort of the opposite of the queens in their given season.  They are independent of their Queen’s courts.  The Erlking is a summer king and he is not a particularly friendly guy, whereas Santa Clause, one of the winter kings, is kinder, the spirit of generosity in a time of bleakness.  Yah I’ve gota have Harry ask Mab about him so she can roll her eyes.
Dudesan: You've described Santa Claus as being the Winter King. What does that title mean? Do Winter and Summer each have a trinity of Father/King/Prince, like they do with Mother/Queen/Lady? Is the King necessarily the consort of the Queen? If so, will we be seeing Oberon at some point?
Jim: 5) The Faerie realms just aren't that structured. It's more accurate to say that he is /a/ Winter King. Or even more accurately, that he is a free Wyld Fae who is of a power level that is on par with Mab's and happens to neighbor her sphere of influence, and finds it simpler to show up to family dinners during the holidays and make polite than to start staking out boundaries and establishing treaties.
Oberon... well, the guy kind of wound up between Mab and Titania in one of those romantic triangle things, back around Shakespeare's day. He didn't make it.
2013 KC signing Q&A
Is Kringle Fae?
His mantle, yes, is part of the Winter Court. Which does not necessarily mean that he himself is Fae as much as the fact that his mantle is. While he’s there, he’s got to pay deference to Mab. If Mab gives him a command, he has to obey it.

If we were to make a chart of Hierarchy of the Courts than it would look something like this.
Mother Winter Atropis and Skuld-Queen Mab-(Leanansidhe)- Lady Molly
               Kringle
Mother Summer- Queen Titania- (Eldest Gruff)- Lady Sarissa
         Erlking
Where else do you think other Faerie’s exist in this hierarchy, under what terms does a powerful member of Faerie obey or have obligations to the Queens. Kringle seems to mostly be a formality, of showing up when asked, but does not have any direct orders of obedience to follow.
Leanansidhe seems to have a bit more debt and obligation to Mab. Being required to give up Harry’s significant debt, be Mab’s mouth piece, Train Molly as a potential Winter Lady. However even she can’t be ordered by Mab to go all out against the Red Court as she did.
Eldest Gruff is able to divert or subvert a direct order from his Queen in exchange for honouring a debt to Summer Court.
Jim has stated that Erlking isn’t required to obey Titania, but presumably their’s similar levels of formality that Kringle has to go through, particularly given the Erlking’s concern and obedience to Harry’s wordplay during Changes.

Also what other King’s or Lords of Winter and Summer are their?
I’ve always thought that Jack Frost and Peter Pan would make great Winter and Summer Princes respectively. Jack Frost has the power to manipulate Shadows, so in my head he played a prank on Peter Pan and separated Peter’s shadow.
Jack Frost is also first mentioned in a poem obeying Santa Claus, so there’s that connection.

Any other figures from folklore who’d be good candidates as powerful members of Faerie?

Discuss and Thanks for reading :)

DF Spoilers / Movie's and Music to the Dresden Files.
« on: August 13, 2017, 05:44:45 AM »
So I've been watching WOJ's and saw Jim mention a couple of times that he rewatched the Ocean's 11, 12, 13 series while writing Skin Game and listens to punk music and the Offspring while writing from Harry's point of view, and different characters have a different song.

So what do you think, which song or movie on repeat for what book?

All I've got is:
From Dusk Till Dawn: Changes
Ocean's Series: Skin Game

There's bound to be one for Dead Beat as well, but I can't think of it.

DF Spoilers / Character discussion.

So just opening a fun discussion on favourite character other than Dresden and why plus ideal casting.

My vote as a character. It's a tough one for me.

In terms of character development I'd have to go either Butters or Molly.

I also like how Murphy is a tough chick that still behaves like a woman not just a macho asshole who happens to be female.

I find Michael to be an inspiring character and so well written you can almost feel his goodness seep through the pages, makes me almost want to believe in God.

Ebenezar is just like his description of a soul gaze an old oak that has seen too much in the world. His character reminds me of that of old war veterans from Vietnam trying to live their life, but still having a grizzled hardness to their soul.

Rashid is a lot of things intriguing, mysterious, wise, humouress, good natured. I like that he's a positive Muslim character, but more than that I just like the guy. He is well suited to his role as a guardian just like Ebenezar is well suited to being a warrior. I wish we saw more of him on screen though I guess that'd defeat the purpose of his character

Marcone is chilling, he's a trope well used and well done. Like Ebenezar he was a soldier whose seen and done too much and been hardened by it, only he decided to use his coldness and darkness to serve himself.

I think I'm going to wait and see some discussion before deciding who to vote for.
I know Jim has joked about Tom Hiddleston and Michael Fassbender as Thomas and Harry, while I don't think it's very realistic eh who cares this is about fun so that said I've always wanted to see those two thrown together with James McAvoy and Benedict Cumberbatch the four of them on screen together would be amazing. Some day I'll become a Hollywood Writer and get them together in an SAS Squad movie taking down a Jungle Warlord.

What do you reckon one could play Michael the other Nicodemus.

In terms of realistic casting I tend to look at tv actors for a potential Dresden Files tv series as it may actually be possible.I've really only got one solid hope.

Laura Vandervoort as Murphy. She's a Canadian actress sci fi and supernatural props, plus here's the kicker she's a second dan black belt as can totally kick ass.

Other TV Castings would have to include the Cast of Supernatural. I know Jim's not a fan of the longevity of the show but I think he was fan in the beginning. Though the actors might not want to work on such a similar show with similar characters after their finished with Supernatural

Jarad Padelecki as Thomas.

Jensen Ackles as Dresden.

Misha Collins as Nicodemus or Michael (either or I think he has deceptive range)

Then theres

Famke Jenssen as Mab or Lea (She has the sultry evil seductress thing goin on and the accent fits)

Sasha Grey as Lara (I saw her in Entourage and she can act... I swear thats the only time I've seen her)

Once enough books have been written do you think there'll be a Cinder Spires RPG?

Cinder Spires Spoilers / Olympia
« on: April 18, 2017, 08:59:38 AM »
Ok so spire Olympia this might be a little selfish of me given that I'm from Australia but Australia's colours are green and gold, but then so are the Olympics. We're obsessed with games and races and stuff like that. The ruff and gruff Olympia captain we see in the bar brawl scene against a surface creature reminds me of a stereotype of a gruff Australian.

Anyway so this topic is to discuss Olympia. I'm only half hearted about it being a representation of Australia sameway the enemy Spire may or may not be a representation of Spain and so on and so forth.

So let's discuss what we know about Olympia.

There is some sort of annual or bi annual or leap year event their presumably in which the Predator lost a race to Captain Grimm's ex wife turned villainous harpy who goes out of her way not to kill Grimm or destroy the Predator. Who is Olympian herself.

The Captain who can crash his ship walk several kilometre's on the surface with his crew find his booked tavern occupied restrain himself from killing them then take part in a brawl against a narly surface creature. (Oh and he has fur cuffs)

And according to Captain Grimm the Olympian navy forces their Captains to serve several positions on board a ship for a determined period of time before even being considered for promotion. (It was Grimm's excuse to cook against his XO's staunch disapproval)

Am I forgetting something about Olympia that explains why I'm hoping it be an analogue for Australia?

However if it is an analogue for Australia then it'd be remiss of me to remind Jim to also spend some time thinking of an analogue for Kiwiland or the Land of the Silver Fern otherwise known as the cousins we don't like to talk about the New Zealanders. (My Dad's Kiwi so I felt obligated to say something)

DFRPG / Simon Pietrovich
« on: November 25, 2015, 12:06:21 PM »
I was just curious if anybody had ever done a character sheet, or even any thought to what elements Simon Pietrovich would've specialised in since we've learnt so much about him from Paranet Papers except for this. I assume his Refresh Cost would be in the mid 20s possibly just below the Blackstaff considering Pietrovich shows considerable respect if not outright fear of Ebenezar in the letters. I also think Pietrovich could go any which way in terms of elements, but am leaning towards air and earth, air because he had an analysing personality and earth because he stuck to helping the Tsar past the point he should have and from his letters seems a go with his gut sort of guy with a strong belief in what he was doing, even maybe past the point of when he should stop. That just reminds me of Morgan more than a little.

This is just my interpretation of course and I could be way off base, plus I wouldn't have any idea how to write his Stats, but these are my theories so far.
