Author Craft / Writing Influences
« on: February 20, 2011, 02:08:53 AM »
What authors have had the most impact on you? Whose writing do you drool over? Is it for technical/language reasons, or for characterization or plot or storytelling?

Author Craft / sleeeeeep, or internal clock? what internal clock?
« on: October 06, 2010, 06:13:54 PM »
So I had a breakthrough last night! I finally figured out a plot problem I had been working on all week! It was awesome!

...too bad this breakthrough happened at around midnight and had me writing until 5am. I woke up this morning feeling like a zombie.

Does this kind of late night inspiration ever happen to anyone else? How do you deal with it? And you're not allowed to say coffee, because coffee makers and I don't mix.

(also, should the comma be after the 'or' in the subject line? it's been bothering me.)

National Novel Writing Month is almost upon us!

So who's doing it this year? I'm using October to plan everything out. Might even bump my word count goal up to 100k. Hey, it could happen.

Author Craft / Character Development vs Character Derailment
« on: September 26, 2010, 04:48:04 AM »
So, character development. How do you pace it and how far do you go?

Dynamic characters are usually a very good thing, because you want engaging characters to keep your readers' attention. But what happens if the character you start the story with is completely unrecognizable as the character you see at the end? How do you make character change believable and how do you know where to stop?

Author Craft / I Double Dog Dare You
« on: July 14, 2010, 05:51:26 AM »
Codex Alera started with a kind of ridiculous dare (Lost Roman Legion plus POKEMON, betcha can't pull that off!). In the end, the story turned out pretty well. Not to mention published. So, is anyone up to trying a semi-ridiculous Dare thread of our own?

We can have dares that are specific or general, meant for anyone or targeted at individual posters. Anything to start the creative process and maybe add some fun into the mix is game (ex, Titanic and the Last Airbender! with leprechauns!). The only rule is you have to figure out a way to make it work.

Anyone up for it?
