The Bar / Re: New Weird
« on: January 02, 2024, 09:12:45 PM »
Hello there!
Fireworks are being less and less frequent here, in part for the campaign about noise being bad for pets, children, and some  mental conditions, and part because of the crisis. Not many people can invest in fireworks. Even when I understand all that, I miss when they were tons of them. It was fun. I always loved them.
Today was nice, warm and sunny but not too much on either thing. I hope it remains like that tomorrow when I am back to work (today I was excepted due to a medical appointment, which actually has been for December, but they rescheduled me and the first available time was the first workday of the year.

LOL, I have such a fun imagining that. But I am glad you will cover it so the kitten would not be in danger.

Did I ever tell you I play Pokemon Go? (I know I spoke about that here in Weird but I do not remember if you, Regen, were present. I comment it now because it is so fun these days. The pokestops and all the backgrounds are sporting Christmas' decorations and...snow. Lots of snow. There is also a Winter event featuring ice pokemon. Problem is here is Summer, we are having around 32 C and we even have a pokemon who has a form for each season and it is now wearing his Summer form. So...contradicting and funny.

((((((((PD))))))))))
I have seen the Godzillas (I think pretty much all of them, but I am not a super fan. So I guess I will wait until it is in some stream.

Regen: Oh yes. I knew my hubby from the university but watching Star Trek was one of the things that united us (for example, he did not have cable TV so he came to my home to watch some Star Trek) and so, we joined the same club together. It helped a lot to see there were a lot of people crazy like us  :)

I hope you have fun with your family, with or without your brother-in-love. Fondue sounds awesome!!

The mental visuals of your three kitten watching the tree is amazing. I hope the tree is all decorated now and all pretty, ready for the kitties first Christmas  :)

Yes, it is perfectly normal to forget those sorts of things. But do not be sorry, at least for him it is good news that what happens to him is normal, and not a bigger problem.
I am glad you are enjoying Percy Jackson. I may watch it in the long weekend.

I am thinking I may do a quick reread of The Aeronaut Windlass, especially because I was checking some inconsistencies between the two books and I was hooked again. I loved that book.

The dinner with the computer club sounds great. Some  of my best friends are from long ago when we were in a Star Trek fan club  ;D, so I think I understand the situation more or less well.

Hubby and I are going to spend Christmas's Eve alone but on Christmas Day we will go to my cousin's home. The family is a quite sad because yesterday they have to help their doggy to cross the rainbow. I will miss the sweet one myself. I bet there will be tears. But at least they have a cat that (I bet) will suddenly become even more spoiled. Besides that, with the terrible situation, they won't be the happiest Hollidays ever, but I hope being together will be enought to be happy. It will be the first time I met my cousin's son after he came back from Europe (I told you he was in Brno for 3 months+ and he was back mid November) so that is enough to make me smile.

Well, in case I do not "see" you before then, HAPPY HOLLIDAYS FOR EVERYONE!!!!🎄🎅🏽✨

Cinder Spires Spoilers / Re: Olympian Affair (Spoilers All)
« on: December 19, 2023, 10:56:47 PM »
Yes, the story Grimm told here didn't quite fit with what we'd already heard in book one, but that could be either Grimm lying to Abby or Jim changing things.

I just read some paragraph of the two books and I've noticed a few things besides Rook (that I bet Grimm purposely left out of the story, even when it means lying to Abigail).
1) In TOA Grimm said Alex was a midshipman. In TAW Gwen said that for what she found, the three of them were lieutenants. It could be easily explained by Gwen being confused or by the fleet lying to justify giving the promotions to Rook and Bayard (to smooth things with them). Nevertheless, there is something weird. In the same TOA Grimm said that he "had seniority on Alex and he was on shambles. So I assumed command." but if Grimm was a lieutenant and Bayard a midshipman, it was obvious that Grimm had the command, no need to mention Alex being in shambles or anything. So I think what happened is that Alex began the journey as a midshipman and was promoted to lieutenant in the trip itself. But it is not clear.
2) in TOA Grimm said he cut the XO throat and dropped him by the side. In TAW apparently the XO had been beaten to a coma.  No possible explanation but someone lying (perhaps the Fleet).
3) What I see as more serious, because there is no politics or Fleet involved. In TOA Grimm said that the men, especially Kettle, supported him. In TAW Kettle told Gwen that he did not know Grimm when he was on the fleet. So...What the Hell? No Beta caught that? Will be relevant for the future?
More important, in TOA Grimm said that

Cinder Spires Spoilers / Thoughst about The Olympian affaire (SPOILERS!!!!)
« on: December 19, 2023, 04:53:10 AM »
Stop reading if you did not read the book! I am serious. This is full of SPOILERS.

There is another thread about the map, so I won't speak about that here, but I finished the book today and I had lots of things to say. You are warned, this is going to be long.

General comment:
I REALLY liked the book. BUT at first I struggled getting invested in it. The fact that every chapter changed the characters we were following was very distracting and it was difficult for me to find the motivation to keep reading at least until more than half of the book.
Like with TAW, I still think the characters are my favourite thing in the book. Cavendish is an excellent villain. Gwen, Ferus, Folly and Grimm, and the Spirearch too, are my favourite but I liked most of the others too. I am not a fan of Elaine, I mean, Calliope but in general I enjoy the others. Among the new ones, Ravenna is the best, but I liked all the others: Abigail (even when, you know...), the surface etherealist and the minor characters like the cats, Hamish and Tilde and Vincent.

Specific comments

1) I love the little details, like at the beginning Kettle telling Grimm that not many people would have taken a moment to think, or Gwen "calmly" shooting a revenant, or Abigail understanding what the glasses she gave her meant to Folly. I think the little details made the characters so great.

2) I am really, really mad about the Spanish names. I mean, yes, I know a writer is free to invent whatever names they want but most TOA names are written like nowadays, except by some Spanish ones. And yes, some of them are perfectly correct, like Espira, Chavez and Rafael. But, for example, it is (possible but) weird that Rafael becames Rafe and Espira is Renaldo instead of Reynaldo. Valesco is a very unusual name. I would have expected Velasco, which is very common. Raoul, Francesco and del Aurora are also quite uncommon writings, as Raśl, Francisco and de la Aurora would be more natural. But if that was all, I would be just moderately annoyed. What irritated me so much was the ship called CONQUISTODOR. Like...what? Can you imagine a ship named ConquerIr?  >:( >:( >:(

3) I loved the duels. After having felt robbed of a proper duelling in TAW, I absolutely enjoy those. Still, I think like a lot of Grimm's duel depended of the intelligence Abigail gathered watched Valesco duelling a random character. As if a super expert duelist always used the same tactics and style. It is a reduced sampling  :)
Also, I have a question. I am pretty sure I've read that Grimm's duel was "at noon" and Abigail's "at sunset" but then it seems that they happened at the same time. What did I get wrong?

4) I was not so inlove with the tea meeting from the ladies scene. The attack on Abigail felt super weird and clumsy. It seemed that having a man in a female reunion, particularly if he just appeared to hit the victim, was not a valid reason for offense and duelling. It would be just a serious gaffe from the host. Also, if people heard that the great and terrible duelist had decided to hit a pregnant woman (the warriorborn coud smell the pregnancy) wouldn't have been embarrassing for Valesco? And more important, what exactly was the plan? Because as far as I understood, they did not know about Folly before the meeting, so for all they know Abigail would have gone into the reunion, trade some veiled insults, Hestia would have made her feel ashamed...and she would have left without Valesco having the chance of doing anything.

5) I liked the surface scene with the aetherialist and the old cat, and the battle with the Scyther  :)

6) I understand is very convenient for the plot but I would think the logical action for Grimm would have been trying to blow Ransom's ship instead of boarding it and trying to take a new technology.

7) PLEASE tell me they will rebuild Preddy. If the core crystal is undamaged (big IF) I think her personality could remain. Also, i suppose the rescuers will find (in the other ship) the crystal that Cavendish mentioned, the one grown in weeks, that could be so useful to the war. I am confident they will find Ferus's cane, so I imagine they could find that cristal too.

8 ) Valesco death was very satisfactory, and I hope someday we can have a satisfactory death for Cavendish too.

9) I was very sad about Ferus, a character I loved. But I understand that is the mentor's fate, in general.

10) Cavendish is Folly's mother!!??

11) Even when I understand why she did it, I am not too happy with Abigail risking Grimm's life. I liked Bayard's reaction and the fact that he did not immediately forgive her. I want them to reconcile and be happy with their baby but I feel the way it happened is more realistic and show Bayard's character. Also, I am afraid they will not have a happy ending. Anyways, I think Abigail could have try to show Bayard that even when she would do the same again she still regrets what she did to Grimm. For example, she could have offered to pay for Grimm's rehab with the best doctors. She is rich.

12) I loved that Espira is impressed with Grimm, he seems to respect him a great deal. I was looking forward to a scene with Grimm telling him "So, you slept with my wife..." and Espira blanching. And yes, we know they are exes (but not formally) and both of them have other partners but Espira would not know. Alas, that did not happen.

13) Last, and also Espira related. I seriously see no reason why he is not a prisoner in the end. I understood that his surviving men were allowed to march free, but I think he should have been Grimm's prisoner.

God in Heaven, that was super long. You have been warned though and I regret nothing. I expected so long for this I am enjoying it now :-)

Ok, I finished the book today!
I will begin a new thread later because I have a lot of things to say (as usual) but in this thread I am going to comment about the map.
I am quite confused about the map. I really do not understand how all the spires are in USA, I thought they were the remains of old nations. I wonder what happened with the rest of the world, it is destroyed or it is simply so far away it is forgotten? It does  not seem as if the CS ships can cross the ocean or have any long-distance communication system.
And WTF happened? If the spires are all in USA why are they so different, like Victorian age Britain and Spain, for instance? Even their names.
What i do think is that the CS world is a world that went more or less like ours until the beginning of the electricity and then something happened and history branched from the real life one. Probably that something was the discovery of aetherialism.  Something destroyed the ecosystem but I do not think it was atomic bombs or anything futuristic. It does not seem as if they ever develop television (even radio?).
Of course, aliens arrived, but I am not sure if that was in Victorian ages or later in the CS stories. We will see.
The strange thing is I personally do not care for the backstory. A short paragraph telling me what happened will satisfy my curiosity well enough. I just want to see what happens with the characters I like now.
I am quite sad at the literally USA centric development. Our world is so big and complex, why limit it?

I've saw the ads for Percy Jackson in Disney+. I have not read the book but I have the feeling a series will be better than a movie. And yes, I also read that the author was quite involved in this show, so hopefully it will be good and you and your girl/s will enjoy it.

I forgot to say that I managed to read more of the CS book, I am in chapter 53 I believe, so the end is near and things are. of course, looking...well, grim. Or Grimm  ;D. I want to finish reading it so I can visit the forums and post about it.

We just watched Indiana Jones. Dina, you were right. It felt like one if the old movies. I also liked it. Funny: once they entered a building at night, didn't stay long and when they got out, it was day. LOL. May have missed something in between, but my husband also said: "didn't they go in at night?"
Did you notice Antonio Banderas? At first my husband didn't believe me, but it was him.
I do not remember the building thing, but the time is quite random in the movies  :)
I've noticed Antonio Banderas but it took me an embarrassing long time. When I heard him talking I immediately thought he sounded like him (which is weird because I am not good with voices and accents, I am more a faces person) but I did not think he looked like him. Until they showed a closer look and then I said "oh yes! He is Antonio Banderas!".

DC, I guess we will talk after the new season  :). Also, about that character, yes, as a not book reader i have not idea what is going on with that.
