DF Spoilers / Re: Summoning Molly
« on: June 15, 2018, 04:47:49 PM »
Harry has her true name too. Though I think it was spoken by her mom and not directly from Molly’s own lips so it might not be as potent.

The cynical part of Harry has to be thinking “man this knowledge is probably worth a ton in trade, and it’s value is only going up.” I mean, imagine the price someone could ask for for Mabd true name.

So far, I haven't seen what I consider to be the most entertaining question in this topic be asked: what would Harry summoning Molly look like?

"Youngest noble daughter of Winter, I request your presence in this mortal coil. Eldest Jawa, and herder of the line of the woodworkers, grant me an audience. Accept this offering of Coke I leave before thee. Weaver of veils, mistress of well brewed coffee, desecrator of prepared foods, I needs must speak with thee. Padawan! Grasshopper! Lady Molly! I summon thee!"

Bahaha well played sir.

DF Spoilers / Re: Question about beer bottles
« on: June 14, 2018, 12:50:42 AM »
Coming from a home brewer, you cannot actually have caps that are not tight.  You bottle after fermentation (your recipe might call for primary only or primary and secondary fermentation or something even more  elaborate).  You add a bit of sugar (primer) to the beer and then seal it air tight.  The yeast eats the sugar and produces carbon dioxide, which is how you get carbonation in your beer.  If the seals weren't air tight and strongly on, you'd have a blow out - the caps would be shot off and the beer ruined.  Even if they didn't pop off, your beer would get contaminated.  One of the most critical aspects of brewing is absolutely cleanliness - bottles, caps, all your brewing equipment will be cleaned and sanitized, usually using a combination of things such as an oxygen cleaner and/or food acid type disinfectant.  Any strain bacteria could instead eat the sugar otherwise and that would lead to skunky, nasty beer.

I think Mac's operation is a LITTLE bigger than that. He likely does not brew in individual bottles, he makes way too much of the stuff. He probably brews elsewhere and pours it into bottles then seals it.

In any case, I dont remember anyone other than Mac and the lady bartender in Curses (who is also not human) doing it.

Ok, ok.
A. Harry as WK might have a protocol for calling upon any one of the queens
B. Mab can not show and/or send her own proxy instead, she only has to show if it violates the above precedent actually. Harry had cause to summon Leah remember...
C. Can't imagine her being mad over an honest mistake in summoning her, Mad he was trying to undue her intention, maybe. But since he's not at the time privy to that I can't see why she'd be mad at something he couldn't by her own design know about. Like Being mad a kid playing with matches when he's no idea what fire is or that they make it.... illogical to me.

When I asked JB about the circle and Demonreach, he emphasized just how ballsy it was of Mab to step on the soil of Demonreach at all in Skin Game. The shores of that island are a SERIOUS threat to anything that pisses Dresden off while he is there. I am pretty sure ANY being would be really really upset and worse, frightened, about being summoned to the island for any reason, even accidentally.

Isn't this already the plot of Cold Days?

Neither Mother Winter nor Maeve ever actually give Harry a direct order. The only one he is given is from Mab. So, no, the situation has not come up yet.

DF Spoilers / Re: WAG.... Murphy has moved on

At the signing JB also mentioned that Murphy was based off the character in Robocop. I assume he meant this girl, and whose name is actually Anne Lewis, then he took Murphy from the main character of course.

I’ve always been a Murphden shipper, but I have always suspected (especially now since they have hooked up with so many books left) that Harry is “destined” to end up with Elaine. Which does not bode well for Murphy’s continued health.

The denouement of Skin Game effectively blows this theory up sorry Groinick. The Mighty Murph-den Power Ship is at full sail at the end of Skin Game. Remember they didn’t just kiss once they kiss until the Nurse comes to kick him out, and they say they agree they are going to act out what Harry has “only dreamed about” once she is better.

DF Spoilers / Re: Best question answer at the Virginia book signing
« on: June 13, 2018, 10:34:53 PM »
My interpretation of Jim’s answer is basically “the moment I am writing and start thinking “oh no I don’t have enough of this type of person so who should I change?” Is the moment I am both not writing the story I see in my head, and I am inserting politics into the story. I don’t want to do either of those things, so I will keep writing the same way I always have”

That is a great answer to the question. For what it’s worth, my wife has always said she wouldn’t mind some different body types in the books, but his answer makes perfect sense.

As for his tone, I think he answered in a way to make it plain he had heard the question before, he understands where it is coming from, but it’s not something he intends to pay any attention to.

Exactly.  If it *had* occurred to Harry to summon Molly (an unlikely scenario to me, given that he wasn't yet thinking of her as a Sidhe) then Mab would have shown up on her behalf, and the awkward dock conversation would have ensued while Harry had Mab in a circle on the island. Which likely wouldn't have gone well.

If Harry ever summons Mab into that circle again I think feces would go shooting toward the spinning device at warp speed. She would be showing up in her battle gear.

I thought about it, but it felt too much like a gotcha question at the moment.  He also contradicted a previous comment on the death curse being satisfied by his death, this time saying it wasn't because Harry didn't really die.

He was very certain and specific this time. It was a definite no, it did not effect the death curse.

Eh, I wouldn't take the fact that he did a mercenary job for a dollar as evidence he's THAT altruistic.

In point of fact, I would think the series will probably show him doing some very unpleasant tasks for some very bad people. He is a true mercenary. Just because he was “nice” to Harry doesn’t mean he has any altruism going at all. If Nic has hired him first he would have helped slaughter Harry and Micheal in the vault.

And he didn’t charge Harry a dollar or give up his diamonds to be nice. He could walk into any vault in the world (as he proved). Human money is literally worthless to him.

I think his answer was more on the order of “yes he could but it would definitely NOT have gone over well.” I assumed he meant with Mab, I don’t know why Molly would have been upset.

Someone also asked him if the mother, queen and lady could give him conflicting orders, to which he replied “mwahaha they Are Now!” In that tone he gets when he got a great idea of how to screw Harry over.

I think that helps answer your question. He (and Molly) CAN try to circumvent her, but it is not ever going to end well for them.

DF Spoilers / *New series with Goodman Grey tease at Virginia signing
« on: June 10, 2018, 03:25:22 PM »
Maybe this is old news I haven’t been on the forums in a while.

But I got to check meeting Jim off my bucket list at the Saturday signing at the Barnes and Noble in VA. I asked him who had imprisoned the monsters in Demonreach and if the circle was important in that process. He said the previous wardens imprisoned them (he didn’t know about the previous wardens of the island except Merlin was the first). He said he would not answer about the circle.

Most interesting answer imho he teased that he was planning and would like to write a spinoff series revolving around Goodman Grey and his various exploits. Not much other information other than Grey is very very old so he could warp around in time which he liked. A later question asked if he might consider writing a story about Margaret Lefay later, he said no but she might show up in this Grey series, since we already know they met.

Good event, he answered questions for about an hour even though he wasn’t feeling very well.

Thanks Jim

DF Spoilers / Re: White Court Anit-Love and Blood Rites
« on: January 16, 2018, 08:55:00 AM »
The relevant passage from the books regarding this is in Proven Guilty, the scene right after Harry and Thomas leave Zero.

The phrase that sums it up best (IMHO) is when Thomas says the danger occurs when the Hunger is "close to the surface." This can mean several different things; that the Vamp is very hungry, that the Vamp is very turned on; that the vamp is actively trying to feed; that the vamp is actively using some of the Hunger's energy, etc.

My guess for something like the wedding ring scar is that Lara was using her power to try to seduce someone, the game and intrigue of the situation also causing Lara to get turned on herself. As part of the seduction, she goes to hide the wedding ring from sight, so the victim isnt reminded of his true love by the sight of it, and because her Hunger is so close to the surface the ring is able to badly badly burn her. Why that is a permanent scar vs Harry's kiss or what Justine does to Madeline seems to heal completely is not addressed at all, but that could be something as simple as how intense the love was or how young Lara was when it happened.

DF Spoilers / Re: Turn Coat Re Read Questions.
« on: July 12, 2017, 07:19:29 PM »
1. In Turn Coat Listen to Winds mentions to Shagnasty that Harry nearly beat him without knowing the Dine yet alone the Old Ways. What other Old Ways was he referring to, since the Dine aka the Blessing Way seems to qualify as tradition in the oldest sense.
2. What did Listen to Winds and Ancient Mai do while the others were busy fighting the Grey Men? It did not seem like they accomplished anything notwithstanding the thrashing Listen to Winds gave to Shagnasty.

1) Well addressed already.

2) My guess is Mai and LTW did something on the order of what the fetch (we assume) did to slow Harry down in the second attack at the hotel in Proven Guilty. Threw up a kind of ward that slowed their progress, didnt actually damage or stop them. It would be something akin to make them feel like they were running through waist deep water, making it harder to move quickly and make them more exhausted by the time they reached the fight.

The bigger outstanding question is that Harry mentions that there were two summoners holding the gate open for the spiders. They leave well before anyone could get a look at them, which is what Eb is angry at Harry at for not investigating while he could instead of saving Thomas. One, of course, was Peabody. I have always assumed the other was Cowl, but it is not a proven fact. But it would, potentially, at least somewhat exonerate Mai and LTW from being there in that capacity. Assuming the other one WAS someone on the senior council (I think Harry believes that to be true) it leaves the Gatekeeper, Langtry, or Martha Liberty. Cirstos wasnt appointed yet but I guess it could have been him. I agree with Eb so far though, I think Cristos is just stupid not evil.

Or, of course, in the common parlance of these forums: OMG TIME TRAVEL HI-JINKS!!1!one
