DF Spoilers / Re: What is Lara's problem? [PT Spoilers!]
« on: August 03, 2020, 12:56:19 AM »
I think it was Thomas. He was very likely threatened with them going after Justine. It may have been a fake Thomas killing the Svaltalf, escaping and real Thomas being clueless and captured by the Svaltalves while visiting Harry's place.

DF Spoilers / Re: Vadderung

Odin looks "kind" because we've seen him be friendly with Harry, who we like, but remember that he's also backing Marcone, and now Lara. And the Erlking is his hunting buddy.

The "kindest" that we've seen him was in Changes, when he just flat out gave Harry the information he needed, rather than demanding payment -- but in retrospect, it looks more like he was using Harry as a cat's paw to set up the death blow of the Red Court. So it wasn't exactly charity.

Odin's on the right side, when it comes to the Outsiders, but heck, so is Nicodemus. Odin's just playing the smarter game of making Harry like him. As he says in Skin Game, it costs him nothing to be polite.

Exactly true. Odin sees Harry as a useful tool or ally. They have in the past wanted the same things or similar done. I don't see Odin just helping Harry when the is no benefit to Odin. It would make no sense for Odin to be a jerk to Harry when Harry is getting things done for Odin. Remember, The Erlking is not nice, but was helpful and polite to Harry during the Wild Hunt fighting Outsiders. Their interests aligned.

DF Spoilers / Re: Why, Thomas, Why? (Peace Talks Spoilers)
« on: July 16, 2020, 12:39:24 AM »
I think this being, in anyway, a Fomor plot is shaky.  The Fomor have literally 0 reasons to care about infighting with the Accords Nations.  They are kicking off their war, and they don't care about what the other side is doing.  Thus there are no reasons for the Fomor to be behind Justine's or Thomas' actions.

Eb using some black magic on the other hand to force Thomas is an interesting theory. This would cause Harry to lose any trust he has in Eb.  Plus it would suit Eb's plans.  He hates the White Court.  Them being destroyed or very hurt in a war would very much please him.  Though you have to ask the question of why are the feds watching Justine?  They shouldn't even have her on their radar.  So maybe its something else to do with the government.  That whole plotline makes no sense because no one really benefits from it.  And I don't see it being resolved very well in Battlegrounds because that book will take place during 1 day if not just the night.  Thomas will still be locked up for most if not all the book.  All the signs are pointing to Justine causing the assassination, but yet again we are left with no reasons or even any clues about a possible reason why this would happen.  I just hope we get payoff otherwise it will be a stupid plotline that went nowhere and has no relevance.
I think the Fomor or their allies threatened Thomas by saying the would go after pregnent Justine. They see the Svartalves as a threat and want payback for killing one of their nobles in Bombshells.
I think they see Dresden as a threat and sent Rudolph to go after Murphy and Harry to distract him. Having Thomas be in trouble also distracts Dresden. As Marcone said, they want to divide their enemies and take them out one at a time. It could be Cowl or Outsiders. They seem to be Fomor allies. They want Dresden and the Svartalves to be at odds too.

DF Spoilers / Re: Paying the Rent
« on: May 03, 2020, 02:08:18 PM »
I would guess paying the rent has to do with being permitted to stay on Earth unmolested by doing some good deeds for a dollar every so often. He seems to have a deal with someone or a group that is very powerful.

Harry could buy half a dozen classic VW beetles; pre-1970 models, so he could always have a working car on hand, even if Mike was repairing one or two others that had been knocked out, and keep two or three at Mike's as part cars.

The problem is the VW Beetle is very small and under powered. Harry and Mouse are big. I would say an old Checker Marathon. Large, rugged, reliable and a very simple car. This would be a good solution but Harry seems to like to do things the hard way. A car that is too small and unheated showers for example.

DF Spoilers / Re: Christmas Eve story - Huge question

Vadderung (if not Kringle) is one of the all-time champions of the Long Game. There's a reason he's helped Harry in the past. He's powerful, he's ancient, and he knows stuff. I cannot wait to see how he'll participate in the Apocalypse Trilogy. I'm not expecting a one-for-one implementation of Ragnarok, mostly because I think some of the key participants have become something else—a point I expect to be explained in greater detail in Body Slam.

Harry seems to be a mortal champion of many of the local powers who are fighting or opposing the Outsiders. He has screwed over their plans multiple times (The Black Council/Circle). I assume that Vadderung does not want the Outsiders and their allies, minions, useful idiots to win. Of course he is aiding Harry, at least on occasion.

DF Spoilers / Re: WAG: the Rent
« on: October 13, 2019, 08:55:57 AM »
I think the moral of the story is there are monsters and then there are monsters..  Goodman is a monster,  he isn't human, but he still has humanity.  I don't think he is free to do what he'd like to do, so he takes payment, one dollar.  One would have to look further back into the history of skin changers, but if I remember correctly, they are servants not free lancers.  Also we all know that way back when, they also were not evil..  If I am correct it would explain a lot.

Then we have Marcone, the real monster here, though he is very human.  Yes, he has a thing about kids because one was collateral damage when his pulled a hit job many years ago..  However he draws the line at taking out those adults who'd make use of those kids because those adults were useful to him in his business..  Now that is a cold blooded monster.
I think Marcone would have taken out the pedophiles who worked for him. Marcone was upset because it was not Goodman Grey's place to take out people who worked for Marcone without Marcone's blessing. It is Marcone's place to take them out. Sort of like when Caesar was upset with Ptolemy XII for having his men kill Pompey, who was at war with Caesar. Caesar would have had killed Pompey, but having Egyptian foreigners kill a famous Roman was not to be tolerated. This helped push Caesar to side with Cleopatra against Ptolemy.

DF Spoilers / Re: Fomor in Skin Game
« on: September 28, 2019, 09:16:51 AM »
Hmmm.   It may be something other than sheer arrogance.  Because the Turtlenecks seem very happy to use modern weapons, and very competent in doing so.  I presume they are following orders of those higher-ups.  This speaks to the bosses having a good idea what the modern mortal weapons ARE capable of.

Also, those boss-monsters seem to be deep-water / oceanic sorts by preference, which gives them a fastness to retreat which is IN the mortal realm, but not terribly vulnerable to mortal attacks...

Last but not least, the Fomor don't have that special Fae weakness to iron (or any other mortal / modern / tech advantage Our Sort is looking able to bring to the fight).

I agree they're acting aggressive and arrogant; but then again, it looks like arrogance vs everyone, not just mortals...  And I'm really unclear why the guys who LOST the last war are now so (over?)confident.

I think the Fomor believe they have new allies such as the Outsiders or minions of the Outsiders. Some of the Fomor leadership may have Nemesis possessing them. Look how arrogant the Red Court got and how both Summer and Winter have had some key people taken over by Nemesis.

I would guess that the WC did not know of Justin being a Warlock because he was a Warden and WC Wizard in good standing. When Harry killed Justin. The WC then investigated Justin (and Harry's claims) and found evidence that he was a Warlock. Sort of like a girl escapes from a serial killer's basement and tells the police. That serial killer was a citizen in good standing and no one looked at some of the minor suspicious things he did, even the neighbors. When the truth comes out then the authorities investigate and find the evidence.

DF Spoilers / Re: How was Demonreach filled?
« on: April 23, 2019, 05:45:04 AM »
For me the big question is -- how did they imprison all these critters in the first place.  Once they captured a couple, the word would have gotten out.

This implies there is some remote "caging" magic that can be used to capture some godling that is not so stupid as to step on the island.

Word did not get to Shagnasty. It met and fought Harry on Demonreach. It seems lots of powerful beings keep secrets. Information is power. Some know, some don't.

DF Spoilers / Re: Any news on Peace Talks
« on: April 14, 2019, 08:40:04 AM »
I think the Fomor are loosing lots of minions and rarely powerful Fomor. The White Council has few minions and lesser allies. So the White Council could be taking losses in much lower numbers but can't afford to lose 20 wizards to 500 minions and the Fomor count themselves ahead. Nemesis could be influencing some of the Fomor leaders so they are doing things not in their long term interests. Look what the Red Court did. They got themselves wiped out. The Black Council (Team Outsider) is trying to get the local major powers to fight each other and weaken or destroy each other. The White Council was supposed to be wiped out or crippled and the Red Court weakend. It was mentioned that the good guys took lots of losses in Peace Talks, perhaps the Fomor are now crippled and no longer a major player.

DF Spoilers / Re: Who are the members of the Grey Council?
« on: September 25, 2018, 09:20:22 AM »
We know Odin, Harry and Eb are members. The Gatekeeper and Martha Liberty are very likely members. Carlos, Steed and Lea may be members. I doubt The Merlin is a member.

Molly without Harry would have become a warlock, then decapitated.  Her becoming the Winter Lady was based on her Choice to get involved with Leanansidhe.  As Jim said, the deals Sidhe make with you are designed to get you more, and more tangled up with them.

It's not that Harry Dresden the man is a problem, it's that the world he lives in is so dangerous, and complicated.  If you spend time with someone like that you're bound to get dragged into that dangerous world.

I agree, just like dating James Bond is dangerous. Not because James Bond is a bad guy, but because he has so many dangerous enemies. Lots of his lovers get killed or go through some rough times.

DF Spoilers / Re: How big was the Boarding House?
« on: July 31, 2018, 08:41:43 AM »
Ask JB how long it can take to build a house. ;D Having said that, he stated that it was built by GS, therefore, somehow it was built. However no keep , nor portcullis.  My credulity can only be stretched so far.

I'm intrigued as to the reason the castle was built at all. What narrative purpose does it serve?  Think about it for a second, in a residential area, JB built a medieval castle.  Granted that the neighbors are deaf, dumb and blind, given all the mayhem that has occurred at Harry's home.  But a castle?

A castle is a lot stronger and more solid than most modern construction. A really old castle probably also has more of a threshold and more resistant to magical attack, especially from powerful non human monsters from the nevernever.  Remember Marcone got his armored safe house broken into by the Denarians. I'm pretty sure that place was a modern fortress.

They built the Empire State building from scratch in a little over a year. That was back in 1930. I can see a small castle/keep being built in 6 months. Marcone may have had some supernatural help on the construction also.
