You may be right about Elantris, DC, but there are some good reasons for reading it in that order. Most of them are tldr, but one is that if you read it later, it's as horrible as eating an apple after a chocolate cake :D
That's fair. I picked up Elantris from the local library after reading the Stormlight Archives, Warbreaker, and Mistborn era 1. I was...less than impressed, let's say, but you have a good point about maybe needing to read it first. :P

To be honest, I still hated Egwene's character. I don't know why. But I agree with you, Wheel Of Time is when I first started getting interested in Sanderson. I looked for more of his books after that.I also started with Mistborn, and while I loved it, I agree it's not a good starting point. Gets a bit confusing. Sanderson has regular books, and Cosmere books, Mistborn is Cosmere. The Cosmere books are all related to one extent or another, they all happen in the same universe, albeit in different planets. I would suggest starting with "The Emperor's Soul" novella. It's a little different but it explains the fundamentals of the magic systems nicely. Personally I loved this book. Follow it by "Elantris" which happens on the same planet but on a different continent and time. If you're still interested after that, go for "The Stormlight Archive" series, books one and two. After THAT you can read Mistborn. If you manage that you'll probably end up reading everything Cosmere.
Personally, I agree with The Emperor's Soul but I would not read Elantris until/unless you're invested in the rest of the cosmere. Elantris suffers very strongly from "First book syndrome" in that basically every other book he's written is better than it. I think Warbreaker and the Emperor's Soul are a good starting point for the cosmere.

I like Swamp Thing.

I must admit, I have never read any book by Sanderson.
I've started the first Mistborn years ago, but it bored me in the first chapters, so I put it away for a later read that never came. Now it is on the shelf in the section for books that might be good to sell.
But I've heard and read that the books were good, so I can't bring myself to give it away yet. Maybe it's the translation again. The Dresden Files are really lame in translation, maybe this is what pushed me away.
I've found the first mistborn for 0,99€ in English. I'll give it a second try once I'm through with the 4th Mercy Thompson.
I don't know that Mistborn is really a good starting point for Sanderson. It's a series that gets significantly better on rereads when you can connect the dots on stuff you learn earlier. Vin gets a lot more interesting as the story goes on but the early story does drag a bit.

Hi people!
I am glad to see GW, Don and DC are here  :) :) :) :)
DC, so, perhaps you should try for a master or Ph.D.?
Don, I'll answer your PM soon, I promise.
Regen, are you enjoying Swamp Thing, besides falling asleep in one episode?
GW, I bought Light of the Jedi. I even began reading it, only a few pages, but then I felt too sad and decided to take a break...and then life happened and I did not take it back. But I will, I am interested in the new approach to the High Republic.

Finally Raya and the last Dragon became available in my Disney+, so I watched it yesterday. I liked it!

Mayonnaise + ketchup is called Salsa Golf here, because one of our Nobel prize winners (we only have 5) invented it in a Golf Club. It is quite common a condiment here.
I'd be more inclined to get a masters or phd if I hadn't heard horror stories from the people I know in grad school. There's also the money aspect, since I've been informed that your experience with both will be heavily dependent on funding, the lab I'm in etc etc (all of which I'm sure you're intimately familiar with. :P )

Keep your head up. You are a smart guy, it'll happen for you soon.
I'm a fan of Siracha and Mayo. But that sounds horrible. Sirachha and ranch is my favorite combo tho.

Dina. I'm sorry to hear that you were sad. It really is a good book. The sequel, which feels very different in style is much better for character growth.
I've been meaning to watch Raya. I have heard great things about it.
It'll happen eventually, but the in-between is quite annoying.

I think I understand. I have stopped many books that way, most recently Rhythm of War by Brandan Sanderson

I rather am enjoying the Nevers. I'm torn between loving the main girls friendship and wanting to Ship them.
Apparently a lot of people felt that way about RoW. I really liked the book, personally. It didn't feel too dark.

Well shoot, I'm sure you will find something. What fields are you trying to get into?

Also what is Mayochup?
I'd just like to get something with "engineer" in the title, given that I have an engineering degree. Though really at this point I'd settle for something that lets me rent my own apartment and have spending money on the side. A lofty goal, I know, but it's what I want.

Mayochup is an abomination. It's a combination of ketchup and the worst condiment ever created: mayonnaise.

I'm working at a grocery store until I can get into one of the many fields I should have gone into that will look at my resume and go "Why would I hire you?" before they toss it thanks to not having the degree they want.

Hey (((DC)))   Didnt you go to college?
I did. For the most part, I regret it. The field I got my degree in is largely nonexistent without a masters or a PhD which I was lied to about from the beginning. I was never interested in grad school, which made that realization deeply frustrating.

I never went to real college so maybe I would have learned so much more. I just read random non fiction books now and look stuff up.
No, you made the right choice. College in the US is, more often than not, a well-structured Ponzi scheme at this point.

Mitochondrial DNA is fascinating. I really wish there were more opportunities for biological research that didn't involve academia and/or grad school. It would be so much fun.

The other day I was reminded of this quote. "Remember, licking doorknobs is illegal on other planets."

SpongeBob was a wild show when I was a kid. It leaves me with so many questions.

That's kind of interesting to me. As far as I know, you're pretty much locked into the public school system until you're bare minimum 16, and even then you have to have special permission to drop out. After you finish that you can decide on trade school, university, etc.

It's always kind of amused me that the different types of post-primary German schools translate as "Middle school" (which is what it's most often called in the US), "real school" and... well, you know. :P

Oh. It's actually pretty good. It's about crime solving. And I like the main character. I'm glad I finally found something I can keep on reading. That doesn't mean, I don't like all the other books I have started in the past weeks, but they were not what I needed. I will read them at the right time. Or not.
Sometimes the taste changes or develops. Sometimes I suddenly like a story I didn't like ten or twenty years ago.  Or I put emphasis on different aspects of a story than I did before.

So maybe I might give The Name Of The Rose another try someday. I was about 20 when I tried to read it. And maybe I'll give Hamlet another try, too.

But for now I am content with this new book, which I am able to continue in spite of the first chapter of Battle Ground only days away.  ;D ;D ;D
It frustrates me when I don't read anything. And it always has to be fiction. And I have to like the main character or at least one of the characters, if there are several.
Hamlet was very stuffy and overblown for me, honestly. Very much a Shakespearean tragedy but almost too much if that makes sense?

Ah, all right then. Sorry about my mistake but ey! No covid is always good! I am so far good but I am indoors pretty much all the time. Hubby and I are hermits together now  :)
I just realized that what they were probably referring to is that I paid off my student loans as of Friday.

Do I have some good news? The only real good news I have is that I haven't managed to catch covid-19 yet despite working a job where it's statistically more likely.
