Author Craft / Re: rules on watching telivision for writers

No rules per se, but I need solitude and silence to write; no TV, music, or other media in the room. If need be, I put in earplugs.

Some good progress today on my climactic scene.

I've done it a few times, and it comes out to about 2600 words/day, so if you can do that, you're golden!

I've updated my website to include a couple of excerpts from Body For Hire:

Enjoy!

Been getting some good revisions  on the Big Damn Sequel despite (or perhaps because of) major family issues.

Author Craft / Re: How do you think/plot on a novel's scale?

And this is a problem.... why?

My last novel was 150k+ and I wrote a 220k book that had to be split into two novels.

Who said it was a problem? :)

According to their website, they've been around since 2010.

I agree with those who think you have at least the seeds of some full-length novels in the ideas you shared up-thread; any of them could be either the opening chapters or the climax of the story. Apart from that, I probably can't help you much, as I have exactly the opposite issue: I'll get an idea and think, "Oh, that could make a nice short story!" Then I think about it a little more and realize that there's no way I can possibly do justice to it in under 100,000 words.

They're not even mentioned on either site. They don't appear to be scam artists, just a very small genre publisher without much influence or $$, though they have done a few conventions (and according to my new friend, the CEO has some issues that can make him difficult to deal with.) I was really hoping for some more personal stories, but I guess they're really really small. ;)

I recently met a local (fellow Eastern Connecticut) author who has published a few novels through this company; it's a very small publishing house that takes unagented genre manuscripts. She writes mainly High Fantasy, but they also deal in pulp mysteries, Westerns and sci-fi. From what she told me it sounds as though they have their good and bad points, so I was wondering if anyone here has had any experiences with them that they would share.

Author Craft / Re: Character Development - Chicken or Egg Approach

I had to Google the Briggs-Meyer test but I promptly performed it on one of my protagonists. I have a feeling he'd laugh hysterically if he could see the career choices it picked for him (Nurse, caterer, elementary school teacher...really? He's a private detective.)
Both of my protagonists have taken some interesting turns, personality-wise, though they don't really surprise me so much as feel right. And a lot of what I've discovered about them is backstory that will never make its way onto paper, but helps to inform what they have become.

I voted #1 as that's my principal M.O. but I do a lot of tweaking in rewrites, especially to the supporting cast.
