DF Spoilers / Jenny Greenteeth and Something Borrowed
« on: March 24, 2021, 09:07:31 PM »
Quick question.

What was Jenny Greenteeth's motivation for messing with the Alphas?

I know that she was messing with them because they helped Dresden in Summer Knight, thus hurting them is hurting Dresden. But what I can't remember is, why Jenny had an axe to grind against Dresden. Dresden was working for Winter and foiled a Summer plot, even killed the Summer lady. What's Jenny upset about?

DF Books / Question about what Jim's said about future books
« on: August 25, 2020, 07:37:23 PM »
I kinda took a break from following Jim and haven't read Peace Talks, so I'm quite out of the loop. Back before Peace Talks even had a release date, Jim was saying that the book lineup was:

Book 16 Peace Talks

Book 17: Mirror Mirror, about Dresden dealing with a world where he made a different significant choice.

Book 18: A mystery involving Professional Wrestling involving gods.

So what happened to these? Is Battle Ground the pro wrestling book? Because the blurb definitely doesn't suggest that. And what happened to Mirror MIrror?

DF Spoilers / "That Stunt with Mab"
« on: June 03, 2020, 09:34:48 PM »
The First Chapter of Peace Talks is up. In it I think there's a reference to Skin Game, either that or a short story, and my memory is just flat out blank.

Quote
“Marcone?” I demanded. Gentleman Johnnie Marcone, former robber baron of Chicago’s outfit, was now Baron Marcone, the only vanilla human being to sign the Unseelie Accords. He’d managed that a  few years ago, and he’d been building his power base ever since.

“That stunt he pulled with Mab this spring,” I said, scowling.

Ramirez shrugged and spread his hands. “Marcone maneuvered Nicodemus Archleone into a corner and took everything he had, without breaking a single one of the bylaws of the Accords. Say what you will about the man, but he’s competent. It impressed a lot of people.”

Skin Game was 5 years ago, and I haven't read Brief Cases yet. What is it Marcone did?

DFRPG / Any news about DFAE?
« on: May 19, 2014, 05:41:47 AM »
I haven't heard any news about Dresden Fate Accelerated Edition since it was funded via kickstarter. They said the goal was to have it by the end of the year. Has there been news?

Author Craft / How do you think/plot on a novel's scale?
« on: May 17, 2014, 01:29:54 AM »
To those who plot/outline: How do you find and outline/plot ideas that are Big enough for a novel?

I write very, very short stories - 2,000-4,000 is where I operate best - but this is frustrating me. I'd rather write books.

The problem is that a story is only as long as it needs to be, and anything I come up with doesn't need to be a novel. My thinking is on too small a scale; anything I come up with can be told in a tight space. How do I think on a novel's scale? How do you work out ideas that have a lot of moving parts, that require a lot of steps that necessitate at least 90K words?

What I really want is to make a series, but I can't even try to tackle a series until I figure out how to think on a single book's terms.

DFRPG / Looking for a List of the Accord Signers
« on: May 11, 2014, 11:23:12 PM »
This is really bugging me because I can't find it. I recall there's a sidebar that lists all the signers of the Accords, at least that have been mentioned previously.

What page is this on? It's not on page 14 where the Unseelie Accord are actually discussed.

DFRPG / The Laws of Magic and psychic abilities
« on: March 09, 2012, 04:36:30 AM »
I'm having a disagreement with another person who's just now reading the RPG.

They want to know if the Laws apply to psychic abilities (Specifically Domination and reading thoughts) that are not spells but, by their definition, "something a psychic could do". They are arguing that Domination isn't strictly a Magic Spell, therefore it isn't in the purview of the Council.

This person specifically said there's no proof the Council polices Minor Talents, because "Minor talents are described as those with diluted supernatural bloodlines or items of power that grant them one or two supernatural abilities. Not spellcasting."

DFRPG / Vampirism Feeding Confusion
« on: September 09, 2011, 05:38:54 AM »
Alright, I'm looking at two powers (Feeding Dependency and Blood Drinker/Emotional Vampire).

Feeding Dependency explains everything with regards to Feeding Dependency. Emotional Vampire/Blood Drinker explains everything as far as those powers go (except that Emotional vampire doesn't mention doing stress or how to defend against it, etc, just explains the attack).

But there's no mention of how these two interact.

For instance, let's say I have Feeding Dependency and my Hunger Track is full. I can't use my feeding powers to, well, get rid of that stress. The only section that mentions Feeding is the Failure Recovery. Which is just a handwave of 'You're out of these scenes, you recover'.  Because the only way to remove the Hunger stress is to 1) succeed at the roll after a scene, 2) accept consequences and then heal them, or 3) wait til you go into Failure Recovery. Shouldn't I be able to remove Hunger stress by actually using the feeding powers?

As far as Emotional Vampire is concerned, you just make attacks (and get better at them) and if you kill a target you can get a free recovery period to clear a Minor consequence.

In fact it spells out that if you take feeding dependency you must take these powers. But what are you getting for that -1 to refresh? An additional +1 to rolls (and if you kill the option of removing a mild stress)?

What am I missing?

DFRPG / Feet in the Water - What can I build?
« on: September 06, 2011, 08:38:42 PM »
So I may finally be able to get into a Dresden group. However, the Gm has set the level at 6 Fate / 20 skills.

I can't really think of a single interesting concept I want to play at that low a power level.

What are all the feasible options at this level? Are there amny mechanical tricks to milk it?

DFRPG / Building a Con Game - Help
« on: June 01, 2011, 02:26:32 AM »
So I'm wanting to run a Dresden Files game at a convention. I've not run a convention game before, and yet I still want to give the system a whirl and show it off. But, I have looked at both free adventures (Neutral Grounds and Night Fears) and neither suit my tastes/thinking.

That means I need to design a scenario.

Now, as I understand con games go, it needs to be short. Simplistic. Simple plot, easy enough to be carried th rough with little to no places for hitches.

Also probably the easiest way to build it would be to start with a villain and work towards the PCs.

On the topic of the PCs. Because of the convention I'm going to, among the pregens I want to offer several with an animal motif. One or two weres, a pooka or kitsune based Changeling. Of course this raises the question of why PCs of that overall link are together in the same general place, and I don't know the in-game answer to that, or what their motivation is.

As far as the plot itself, I want to avoid the obvious "some evil sorcerer is going to/has broken a Law of magic".

Beyond that I have no ideas. Suggestions?

DFRPG / Wards?
« on: May 23, 2011, 08:53:51 PM »
Two questions:

1) If your Wards kill a human, does that mean that you just violated the First Law? Because if some stupid burglar climbs in your window and fries himself, that's guaranteed you a beheading. And if that's the case, aren't they kind of pointless, since they're too much of a liability?

2) Do wards (and Thresholds) protect non-standard ways of entry? Such as through the Nevernever? Or, what if someone physically crashes through your wall or ceiling - are they subject to the wards or threshold?

DFRPG / When you want Bob without the Bob
« on: May 18, 2011, 04:23:24 AM »
I had an idea for a way to recreate Bob's "occult computer" for wizards, while keeping it small scale and different. Before I do, let me give you a frame of reference.

Think of a book you read maybe last year or the year before. Try to recall all the information you remember. It's probably decent but not great - you may recall most of it or the gist, but not many specific details. You probably can't remember a certain character's name, or let's say the exact numbers of a statistic.

Now think of a book you just read; it's fresh in your mind, and you can recall all that information. You could remember what happened point by point, but you still have to think about it, walking down the chain of events, or your brain follows connections. You think of a Character's name and all relevant information to that character comes up, and you have to go through it before you remember a specific thing you're thinking of. Or if you want a specific info, you brainstorm and it pops up. Also, while your mind wanders, tidbits pop up naturally - while in the shower you realize something that didn't make sense, and you have to ponder it out, or an unrelated thing reminds you of something from the book.

A Dresden-related example of this is Small Favor; Harry is trying to find out what were those goat-faeries that attacked him. He had to go through many books.

Now that's over, here's the idea:

Imagine taking every book you own and downloading it into your brain. All that information would not be immediate and photographic, you'd have to do the above like you just read it and are trying to recall one important fact. The strength of this is in cross-referencing: If Harry had known the name gruffs and page number, it would have been faster to grab the book and look it up the old fashioned way. But having a pool of 'goat-related faeries', it would have made things much faster for him since the pool of knowledge was small and in one place, not spread out.

This would probably reduce the amount of time for Lore or Scholarship rolls within someone's library.

The flaw here is that this mental database has to be in the room with all your books; you can't take it with you. Oh sure, the info is in your head now, but it's like the first instance at the top of this opst: there's real holes in your recall.

DFRPG / GM Ideas
« on: May 18, 2011, 04:03:49 AM »
How about a thread for just general-purpose plots/ideas?

I had two earlier today I wanted to share.

1) There is a Guardian to a Place. Now this Place could be an armory for ancient magical items like the Staff of Moses, or it could be a place of Significant Power, or a gate to the Outsiders - that's up to you. The Guardian, however, is the lock to the Door; if it dies, the door is opened. The Guardian is wounded - something Big and Bad hurt it at some point, and the wound doesn't heal, but this guardian is so big and nasty, so powerful that it doesn't impair it.

The problem is that someone or something is making the Guardian's wound worse. It's bleeding more, sapping more of the thing's power, and making it easier to kill. That is a big deal.

PCs could be dragged into this similar to either Small Favor or White Night; pushed into it by existing powers in an official sense, or lured into it by a third party to take out the opposition. The Guardian Itself could even be concerned.

(The Wound idea could work for any number of other things, such as an Accords Baron who is wounded and wishes to hide it, but is fearful an enemy now knows of his wound and is exploiting it in this manner, hoping to get outside help)

2) This could correspond with the above, the Place the Guardian is guarding, but it's not necessary.

The Garden of Eden.

Eden is on earth, and it is a place of immense power. This is the place where the world (or Universe or what have you) was created. Aside from being a paradise, a nature-themed utopia, Eden like God's workshop - a conduit of Creation magic. Because of this, wholly new things could be created in Eden. New life forms. New continents or smaller physical locations (which would mean a new place would be created within the Nevernever to respond to this physical locale). New magical life forms. You could take an existing life form (like say a T-Rex) and "make" a full grown one (like a clone with a blank slate). Furthermore, a seriously complex magical construct like the Archive could be made much easier in Eden.

You might say "Wow that's abuseable, PCs'd be making magical item factories and sharks with frickin laser beams on their heads". Thing is that Eden is not a place for amateurs. We're talking Odin or Cowl level players here, not Dresden level.

DFRPG / Gard's Rune Magic?
« on: May 16, 2011, 01:54:10 PM »
Is there Rune Magic covered in the books in a sidebar I can't find, or has it been discussed here?

I'm curious how rules for that work. Since it seems to be Massive potion-style magic item usage.

DFRPG / Some combat and magic related questions
« on: May 12, 2011, 01:44:10 PM »
Stress

1) Are consequences unique to their track, or do you only have 4 Period? For instance, let's say that I just came out of a Mental conflict and I have a moderate Mental consequence. Suddenly I get into a fight. Does this mean that I can't take a Physical Moderate Consequence, or is that only in the Mental track?

2) Consequences eat up stress that already exists, as well as incoming stress? For instance, let's say that all four of my stress boxes are filled in. Suddenly in comes a 3-stress hit. I take a moderate consequence, which is -4. That would be 3-4=-1. Would any of my stress boxes be freed up by this "left over" negative? Or is it only incoming stress?

Magic stuff:

3) Can evocation or thaumaturgy be taken by themselves, or must they come together? All the packages in the book (except FP) require you to take them both. Focused Practitioner lets you take a watered down version of one or the other. But can you pick up one, without the other?

4) Let's say I wanted to destroy someone's armor. Either Kevlar or something like Harry's coat. How would I go about doing that with something like say, Water magic? Sure I can use maneuvers to put Aspects on the target, but I want to destroy the armor period.

5) Also it's reasonable, based on Water's description, to throw around attacks like a gout of acid that Someone uses in Turn Coat?

6) How does Binder do his thing? How would you do that within the rules?

7) Let's say that a badguy rigs a boobytrap in a box to go off when it's opened. Either magical, or he puts a monster in the box (say, a ghost is haunting an item and the item is in the box). The box is mailed to a person. The person brings it inside their home. Does the threshold have any effect? In the case of the monster, it wasn't invited. Same with the spell. If the monster (such as the ghost) isn't effected by the threshold coming in, can it leave, or is it trapped?
