Cinder Spires Spoilers / Re: Social Status of Warriorborn
« on: November 25, 2015, 05:58:47 AM »
I also think that the more human-like nature of cats is significant somehow -- as if some cats (i.e. the ones surviving on spires) and some people (i.e. warrior born) kind of swapped some traits.

Rowwl talks about having a "thumb-paw", obviously sports a 100+ IQ, speaks a verbal language, has a distinct culture, etc.

The Silk-weaver attack on Grimm and Beyard happened right after Grimm slapped Rook around and rejected his offer to sell Predator's core crystal.  Upon reflection, I don't think that's coincidence.

Cinder Spires Spoilers / Re: Folly's speech
« on: October 07, 2015, 08:03:09 PM »
Just to follow up, Folly I believe can directly speak to beings that use Aetherial (sp, cause I listen to books on audio, not read) Energy -- so she can directly address Eferous, Cavendish, the Enemy, Predator, her crystal collections and ... Grimm.  Grimm maybe very, very close to an Aetherialist while aboard Predator.

She also stated that she didn't talk to Puppets, even though she technically addresses Cavendish directly.  Apparently, the "holes" in Cavendish are filled up with the Enemy, whereas Eferous and Folly have to do other things to fill up the holes.  That's why Folly and Eferous are more benign, but also more broken the Cavendish appears.  Other than her fixation on courtesy, Cavendish appears to be much more functional.

Cinder Spires Spoilers / Re: [TAW SPOILERS] Let's talk religion

I think that if you boiled down Christianity, Islam and Judaism enough you'd end up with a vague concept of a God in heaven and some angles that serve him.  At least that was the impression that I got from it.  I agree that the "Way" is a vague boiled down Buddhism.

I'm not sure that I agree that the Archangels aren't actual beings, rather than some kind of contrivance; however, the fact that Folly is able to communicate with Predator seems to support your theory.  Why would "Names" do anything to lure some "ships" down to Earth where they could be destroyed, however?  However, from DF a "Name" can be used to get the attention of certain beings.  In Dresdenverse, you couldn't summon Uriel into a circle (that would hold him), but if he was inclined to show up, as he was for Dresden in Changes, he might put in an appearance.

Yes, it would seem that Folly considers Grimm to be the Predator (and vice versa) when aboard.

Bayard is a good guess.  Personally, I'm fitting Commodore Bayard for a Lord Nelson suit.

Cinder Spires Spoilers / The Index
« on: October 05, 2015, 05:47:23 PM »
So, the book that Cavendish was after, and attempted to destroy was referred to as the "Index" by Brother Vincent and is described as being full of "Names."  Apparently, Cavendish and those who control her seek to use this book and the knowledge in the book to coerce the Angels out of Heaven where they can be destroyed somehow.

Two questions:

(1) Why destroy the other copies of the books?
(2) Why give the book back to the Albians?

Stealing the book makes sense -- now she and her supporters have the book and its knowledge.
Destroying the other copies of the book also makes sense -- Albia no longer has the knowledge and Albia cannot use the book somehow to thwart her plans.

BUT, by giving it back to Grimm (she does not know about his copy of the Book) she gives them a weapon to thwart her AND draws attention to the fact that the Book is that important.

Further, couldn't Cavendish just gone in there herself and read the book? At least no one would have known its importance.  Or, would her need for courtesy prevent her from taking direct action against the Brothers of the Way herself?  Why else get 500 Auroran Marines to assist?

Cinder Spires Spoilers / Re: [Spoiler]Favorite quote thus far...

I would say this by Rowl:

"An airship whose sole purpose is to convey me..."

Alera didn't have mythologies of Angels or Archangels, that's a feature of the post-Christian Roman Empire, hence it could not have come from the Lost Legion that founded Alera.

Well, I'm not sure its as simple -- after all, it seems to be somewhat random otherwise a Lancaster scion wouldn't manifest the traits.  It would seem that there are some other "prices" to pay for the physical powers.  Helen Lancaster describes some of Esterbrook's limitations and Benedict remarks on the difficulties he had learning to read maps -- which are essentially effortless for normal.

The half-soul comments seem to be exclusively made by cats.

I had a similar thought, I must admit.  However, it's probably just a homage to WOT, not an actual story within its world.  GRRM did something similar by naming a noble house the Jordayne's of the Tor (Jordan and his publishing house Tom Doherty)

Eferous discusses what we would call the "classics" -- i.e. Greek mythology -- when making a joke at the bar.  If Spireworld were another WoT phase, that history would be long, long, long forgotten.  In WoT the "Age of Legends" was/is the age directly following our Age, so Spireworld would have to be several ages after Randland, so 20 thousand years later? or more

Given the statements of Eferous, it would appear that the world of Cinder Spires is our world some distant time in the future.  If so, I would not expect the BAT of Dresden Files to be a resounding victory for the good guys...

Eferous refers to a joke where the Olympian Commodore was "Possessed of a Fury" being funny if you know your history, which it is.  That was just one example, I'll have to re-read to find others.

Nice theory, really like it.  UMO have definitely worked on this a long time.  You can add DR and Herne to the A-Team as well now.

So let's go back to the dinner of future woe.  I don't think that there's any evidence that Justin was at the dinner.  However, I do agree that Justin figured out the Star Born plan and worked hard to coopt it for himself.  If they are as rare as they seem to be, it was quite a coup for Justin to have Harry AND Elaine under his influence.  Lea watched over Harry, I wonder who watched over Elaine?

Anyway, I think that the implication of the evidence surrounding the Dinner points more to some kind of White Council Reform plan.  She wanted to change the Council, had not enough support within it and thought she could use outside pressure groups -- The Whites, The Reds, etc. to affect change.  She probably figured that her Father, being somewhat of a renegade himself would be more open to the possibility.

I believe that after Eb didn't cooperate, she started having second thoughts and tried to work free of LR. Perhaps she realized the danger she was putting everyone in (at least according to Luccio).

In short, the Starborn plan was something that she came to later -- after she had been on the run for a few years.  Justin was likely one of her former (few) allies on the council and may have confided in him.  Maggie may have even made Justin Harry's Godfather, which is why Eb never collected him.

Basically, it could be any of the Fae with a "benevolent" intent in entering his house.  Lea, Mab, Odin each could have the knowledge and the benevolent intent to fix LC.  All and all, I think Mab is the most likely person.
