If he had the rings, he wouldn't of carved the extra runes in his staff.

I guess we won't see the rings again till mirror, mirror - where hopefully we find out the fates of little chicago, the bear buckle, the rings, and the sword cane.
I don't think the bear buckle is a real loose end; Harry just didn't want to use the buckle again, because when it wore off that first and only time he used it, it made him crash harder than he'd anticipated, leaving him in a very vulnerable position. It simply wasn't worth it. I know that Jim's mentioned this before; he's also mentioned that - from a writer's standpoint - he didn't really want to be leaning on the buckle, because it could easily become a deus ex machina. I'm fairly certain that it was a conscious decision not to use it again, rather than a discrepancy.

Yeah, Alexis Denisof tends to sort of project this vibe of covering up some bone-deep social insecurity with loads of false confidence. I don't really picture Harry as being quite so... so... smarmy? Is that the word I'm looking for?

When he's laying down the law to the winter court:
My voice echoed throughout the whole chamber as clearly as if I’d been using a PA system. “All right, you primitive screwheads. Listen up. I’m Harry Dresden. I’m the new Winter Knight. I’m instituting a rule: When you’re within sight of me, mortals are off-limits.” I paused for a moment to let that sink in. Then I continued. “I can’t give you orders. I can’t control what you do in your own domains. I’m not going to be able to change you. I’m not even going to try. But if I see you abusing a mortal, you’ll join Chunky here. Zero warnings. Zero excuses. Subzero tolerance.”
I paused again and then asked, “Any questions?” One of the Sidhe smirked and stepped forward, his leather pants creaking. He opened his mouth, his expression condescending. “Mortal, do you actually think that you can—” “Infriga!” I snarled, unleashing Winter again, and without waiting for the cloud to clear, hurled the second strike, shouting, “Forzare!” This time I aimed much of the force up. Grisly bits of frozen Sidhe noble came pattering and clattering down to the ice of the dance floor.

When I first read this I did a mental double-take. Harry committed murder there. Seriously, he straight up murdered a sapient being for the crime of disagreeing with him, and somehow it's okay because it was a Sidhe, not a human. And nobody calls him out on it. There have been other instances of speciesism in the series, but this takes the cake.
A) It wasn't that the sidhe was disagreeing with Harry, it was what he was disagreeing with. Harry told them that they cannot kill or torture mortals -- who are also sentient beings -- while in his presence. The sidhe in question piped up with the equivalent of "you can't tell us what to do!" It wasn't that he wasn't human, it was the fact that he seemed to be active condoning the kidnapping/murder/torture/rape of innocents. Harry would've reacted similarly to mortals who did the same. It would be speciesism if Harry treated the sidhe differently because "ah, he's a faery, that's who they are."

B) The winter sidhe don't seem to respect much aside from violence and power. Harry knew that there was no other way of enforcing his rules in about the two seconds that he had to make a decision.

C) Harry's never claimed to be completely morally correct guy, or a non-hypocrite.

So... guys? We still haven't really answered the question. If fanfiction is allowed - which I think we've established that it is - I'd assume that alexcomp is free to post his screenplay, right? I, for one, would really like to see it. :D

Check with Priscellie on that.  Last I heard, it was a No-Go at least in these forums.  But maybe check with her in case something changed.

Author Craft / Re: Your Pet Urban Fantasy Cliche Peeves

I, for one, would seriously like to see an Urban Fantasy heroine who doesn't have multiple guys fighting over her. Unless you're trying to be a romance novel, what the hell is wrong with stable, healthy, long-term, relatively drama-free relationships?

... Also, what's up with there being no heroes in the world who have good families? In any genre? If there's a hero, their family is either dead or seriously messed up. Why?

Ohh... I like this.
Now I get to read through all the Elaine chapters again with even more paranoia in my mind.
Excellent.

But, still. If Sydna had known, she should've come out and said that. "Rubbish" just.. isn't nice. You know? Maybe it's just me.

:o That didn't sound very polite, Sydna. I guess it was more... completely unproductive. If that had been my theory, I would want somebody to put a little more thought into a debate, rather than just dismiss it as "rubbish." Rubbish just sounds kind of mean, and probably makes Anthony not want to post his theories as freely. And we're not "that" kind of forum. We should be welcoming to new members; not shooting them down.
And it's a perfectly valid theory, imho. It may be a little cliché, true, but Jim lives for clichés. So please explain to us: what's your issue with it?

Yeah, but if you go any earlier than 1975, you get into another small problem: David Copperfield wouldn't have had his stage name yet.
Though maybe Jim hadn't quite thought that one through? :-\

Umm.. there's a weirdness with the Harry-gets-his-magic-and-moves-in-with-Justin timeline which should probably be mentioned, if it hasn't already.

SK is the only mention of him being ten. If there are others, I have yet to find them anywhere. However, there are two mentions of him being twelve in GS, and I know for certain there's a WoJ supporting it; I just can't seem to be able to dig it up.

Didn't he already use the Za Lord's Guard to help with LC?

1 ) Harry usually has a few supporting characters in each book.  Who do you think will be the main sidekick in Cold Days and in what way will they help?  Who else will have a significant contribution to the plot?
I think the Sith dude is promising.

Quote
2 ) At the end of Ghost Story, Harry has said goodbye to all his friends in Chicago.

a. Who will be the first friend to find out Harry isn't dead?
I'm placing my bets on the Carpenters. Either Molly or Michael.

Quote
b. What shenanigans/snark will Harry use when he "re-appears"?
"The rumours of my death have been greatly exaggerated."
"I come back to you now at the turn of the tide." (or something else that's Gandalf-ey)

Quote
c. Who will have the coolest reaction?
Well, I'm pretty sure that Murphy/Thomas will kick his ass.
I'm sort of curious about Mort's reaction ("he... he was dead, I swear!"). And Kincaid's, which probably won't be in this book.

Quote
d. Who will have the most touching reaction?
Mouse. ;D Or Murph.

Quote
3 ) In nearly every book, Harry usually comes up with a new powerup/tool/way of making things go boom.  Given that he just became the new WK, what new abilities will he rely on and which new ability will be the most useful to him during the story (and how)?
Well, he's definitely going to be improving his ice magic...

Quote
4 ) Harry generally has a "Big Bad" to worry about.  In fact, according to the blurb, Harry is going after someone very specific.  Who will that enemy be, and how will Harry take him/her/it down?
It'll be somebody new. He'll take them down like everyone else; sheer wit and determination, a ton of luck, and a little help from his friends.

Quote
5 ) Harry usually faces some sort of "Choice" in every book.  A point where the easy way out will cost his soul/humanity in some way. According to the blurb, this book will be no different.  What will be the most crucial "choice" Harry makes?
Whether to let his daughter know about him or not? I honestly have no idea.

Quote
6 ) As the new Winter Knight, Harry is pretty much garunteed to encounter his Summer counterpart -- Fix.  What will their interactions be?  Will Fix survive?
Fix'll survive. But their relationship will not be pleasant any longer. They'll probably fight at some point.

Quote
7 ) Jim has mentioned that it's about time now to start revealing some of the motivations/dealings of the shadowy figures working behind the scenes (i.e. what Harry calls the "Black Council").  What Black Council secrets/actions will be revealed in this book?
Ummm... what happened to all of the missing people from the paranet that were mentioned last book? Ugh, I honestly have no idea.

8 ) There are many WAG theories on the boards.  Write up to three WAG theories you believe are correct that will be confirmed (or at least have evidence in favor of) in Cold Days.
The Erlking gave out the belts.
Fitz is MacFinn and Tera's son.
The parasite was Lash.

I didn't believe it for a moment.
Jim may be cruel to his characters, but he doesn't kill them without a heck of a lot of thought. The Susan and Morgan deaths practically had the entire books leading directly up them. He's not going to blindside you.
Unlike some authors I know... *Points at avatar.*
