DF Spoilers / Re: [BG spoilers] About the end of the book...

(I am very angry thinking that apparently Harry is not going to find Justine in a year (at least) and by the time the baby, if Justine allows him/her to live, will be born and spend their first months of life with a literal monster)

Sounds like a sufficient motive for time travel...

He needs to negotiate a good dowry/allowance from his fiancée.

Perhaps Loki is a skinwalker in the DV? (He's certainly depicted as an insanely powerful shapeshifter in the legends -- sufficiently skilled that he turned into a female animal, got pregnant, and gave birth.)

Goodman Grey might either be Odin's pseudo-grandson via his father Loki, or he might actually *be* Loki, or a persona/mask thereof. (i.e. Grey is to Loki, as Vadderung is to Odin)

Now I wonder what Battle Ground would have been like with an interlude every couple of chapters showing the scope of events in Chicago from other PoV's.

So, Justine's presence on the Island in Cold Days now makes a GREAT deal of sense.  She was Maeve's "insurance policy."  Maeve said something to the effect that you can't kill me because my mantle will go to some ally of mine (i.e. Nemesis).  That ally was standing right there -- Justine.  Little did Nemesis/Maeve/Justine understand that a much better vessel Molly was also right there.

Love it.

These little discoveries about things that were going on in the background in previous books are great fun.

The implications are severe if Besides was telling the truth: It would mean that True Love and Nemesis can coexist (at least for a while), Nemesis might even be able to abuse it (that's what I think happened with Justine), Thomas will have to come to terms with it that the healthy and seemingly sane Justine he loved was a puppet the whole time ... it's very hard to swallow but is it really impossible?

The only real model we have for possession is looking at the Denarians, and how Lash interacted with Harry.

I'd assume Justine was still *there*, just increasingly manipulated by He Who Walks Beside whispering at her. She still loves Thomas, truly and deeply. She just isn't thinking straight about it.

I'd also assume that when Nemesis took over the wheel, Justine is starting to be more like Rasmussen (Uriel's host) was in Death Masks -- she's trapped inside her own mind, but still in there.

The part I've found weird about Ramirez in the end was his demeanor, quite aggressive (would you be aggresive around Harry if you thought he has gone dark side?) and not even saying sorry about Murph. I mean, not everyone knew Harry and Murphy were an item, but they were good friends, that was known.

Aggressive is standard Warden operating procedure for suspected first-law Warlocks. See: Morgan and Harry, from book one. It's a test. Harry passed.

But Ramirez is also quite reasonably feeling hurt and betrayed.

Yes, Carlos didn't say anything about Murphy, but then Harry didn't apologize for humiliating Carlos in front of the Accorded nations, either. Carlos still has scars -- not from the Fomor, but from Harry choking him with his own cloak.

DF Spoilers / It's all Mab's fault! (Battle Ground Spoilers)
« on: October 07, 2020, 04:06:55 AM »
When Ethniu takes the field and starts blasting things with the Eye of Balor, Mab counters with a psychic assault all over the city, strengthening her allies and oppressing her enemies.

Quote from: Bob
"Everything coming in from that side knows, not in its head but deep down in its guts, that it is entering the lair of a predator and that it's never going home. Knows the odds are against it. Knows that every step forward brings it closer to death.

"... She'll blunt any non-useful terror you might feel, too. And she'll encourage your aggressive tendencies. Like maybe enough so that someone who is too physically screwed up to be involved in fighting instead convinces her friends to help her and heads out into the war.

... Butters leaned in to the conversation. "What happens if Mab keeps making things worse on the enemy?"

Bob let out a hysterical little cackle. "They go insane. I mean, obviously. It's a psychic assault."

So... two things to note:

1. Without Mab "Preparing the Field" Murphy might well have stayed at Mac's. The pain from her injuries would have prevented her from riding a motorcycle and shouldering a bazooka. And her desire to protect might well have overruled her desire to kick ass.

2. Without Mab "Preparing the Field" Rudolph might not have been so insanely panicked -- not to the point that his partner had to knock him unconscious.

There was a bunch of talk about reality *breaking* under the strain of repeated uses of Balor's Eye -- so technically not Ethniu herself, but her doing.

And (not sure I have posted that already somewhere) maybe Mab intends Lara to teach Harry how to behave diplomatically on political events. To prepare him for a more politically active role for Winter.

This. Only it's Mab's special teaching (like her style of physical therapy). When Harry is consort to the White Queen, there will be a whole court of socially-adept manipulative succubi and incubi gunning for him. It's sink or swim time.

The most grievous wounds he took in Peace Talks/Battle Ground were on the social battlefield. He lost the friendship and trust of Ramirez and the political support of Martha Liberty... lost face in front of the whole Accords with his Freydis/Lara shenanigans... damaged his relationship with his grandfather... and ended up being looked at by Chicagoans like a monster rather than a savior.

He really needs to learn to defend his reputation and relationships -- and joining the White Court will be the social combat boot camp from Hell.

Bradley is the new Murphy, he is I think going to SI and will act as Harry’s liaison.

The reason I think this is that the character has been set up for a running joke, like Murphy with her being exactly five feet tall “Five O”.

In BG where Bradley meets Harry for the second time he is described like an armoured personnel carrier. The main US armoured personnel carrier is....the Bradley. Going back to PT on their first meeting his suit is described as neutral ,designed to blend into the business world, I would think almost like camouflage?

On his third meeting he is literally carrying personnel, his daughter and Rudy.

Wow. Really well-spotted. These are the little tidbits I love about the Dresdenfiles, but I almost never pick them up on my first reading.

Bradley is the new Murphy
I didn't notice the sexual tension.  ;)

You didn't?

Quote from: Peace Talks
I eyed the other guy. He was about five feet, six inches -- in all three dimensions. I seriously couldn't remember the time I'd seen a guy built so solidly. He wore a tailored suit, because I doubted anything fit him off the rack, but it was made of neutral, plain materials, meant to blend into the background of the business world. His salt-and-pepper hair was buzzed short, and his face was rough with beard shadow that I suspected appeared about ten seconds after he was done shaving. Something about the way he held himself, the way his eyes were focused on nothing in particular, put me on notice that he knew what he was doing better than most.

I mean, I think the paragraph ended just because Harry couldn't think of any more ways to say that Detective Bradley was very, very manly.

Wouldn't it be an interesting twist if Merlin (trapped in a crystal under Demonreach) and Mab were both ancestors of Harry?

A bit squicky after he, um, tapped that presumably-phat @$$.

DF Spoilers / Swords and Walkers [BG Spoilers]
« on: October 07, 2020, 01:17:56 AM »
Now that we've seen all three Walkers on screen, I'm struck by the extent to which they parallel the three virtues represented by the Swords.

Faith: BS -- Treachery is the very definition of broken faith.
Love: BH -- the mastercraftsman of death (hate or indifference?)

I'm not quite sure how to characterize Behind. In Blood Rites, we get: "O Lord of Slowest Terror! May your right arm come to us! Send unto us your captain of destruction! Mastercraftsman of death! ... He Who Walks Behind!"

(That's also a really fun scene to reread now, since it's the moment when Lara realized that Harry is much more than he appears. "You've made me the cat's-paw for you, Dresden... Clearly, I underestimated you." "Don't feel bad," I said. "I mean, I look so stupid." -- with hindsight, that might count as their "meet cute"... *shudder*)

In Ghost Story, when we really see Behind in action, aside from Harry's fear the two emotional descriptions we get are the way Behind casually turns Stan into three piles of meat... and the righteous fury Harry feels in response.

I'm not sure whether Behind is meant to represent utter indifference as the opposite of Love, or hate and rage as the opposite of Love.

In any case, I'm expecting a scene in Empty Night, final book of the Dresden Files (not counting the Maggie outriggers.) -- the three Knights of the Cross charging into battle against the three Walkers, although I'm not sure whether Harry will be carrying Amoracchius and getting his final showdown with Behind or whether he'll be facing off against the Lord of Slowest Terror.

Actually, what I'd really like to see is the Feds/Librarians knocking on the door and wanting to ask him some questions -- and Harry offering them a revised schedule of his consulting fees.

Re: Murphy's Dad...

Based on the Murphy family picnic (whichever book that was) Murphy never knew that her mother knew about the supernatural or that she was following in her father's footsteps at SI. If her father was killed by something supernatural, Karrin would have no idea.

Re: Catholic Heaven vs. Valhalla...

The general theology of the Dresdenverse seems to be that different religions are seeing different sides of the same mountain. I don't think we should assume that accepting a job offer from the Allfather (who has lunch every year with Uriel) means she's not crashing on her grandmother's couch in Heaven while she gets settled in.
