Author Craft / Yay! I got my first rejection letter.
« on: August 17, 2008, 05:08:09 PM »
I know, it sounds odd that I'm being cheerful about getting rejected, but hear me out: I sent out about 7 in the past month and only one of the 7 came back, which means that at least SOMEONE is paying attention to me. That wasn't even the oldest query letter I sent out, either.

Yeah. And there's other ways to create characters. Superhero creator (which is free), Sims, etc. I made my webcomic characters in Sims just to see what they'd look like more realistic and some to see what they'd look like human.

Make an outline. You don't have to follow it, but it helps unravel the jumbled thoughts of a story. Also, I've been known to let my subconscious do the writing. I'll sit and listen to music and sort of zone out while my fingers do the writing. Okay, so it's probably not really my subconscious doing the writing, but it does help quite a bit.

I can't see voice recognizing software being useful for fantasy or Sci-fi writers. I can just see Patrick Rothfuss using it and getting pissed every time it wrote "Quote" instead of "Kvothe."

I use Word. It works for me and I don't see any reason to change.

Bad Silence of the Lambs joke.  ;D

Nah, it wasn't bad, just esoteric.

Lois: It's geat they picked your theme, but isn't it a little esoteric?
Peter: Esoteric?
(Zoom in to the guys in Peter's brain)
Guy1: Could it mean sexy?
Guy2: I think it's a science term.
Guy3: Fellas, fellas! Esoteric means delicious!
(back to the real world)
Peter: Lois, "Who's the Boss" is not a food.
Brian: Swing and a miss.

I'll like the scientific approach myself with equivalent exchange (x amount of magic to do x level of spell), too much magic in a system can be volatile. Mine is quite a bit like the magic in the Dresdenverse, except a little more scientific than that.

"That quiz was hard," Tom said testily.

"What is on the test?" Tom asked inquisitively

Yeah, the first character gets irritable and the second character gets the shakes.
