Title: The Virtual Gallery
Post by: Blaze on December 17, 2008, 05:58:46 AM
So many of us are extremely talented in so many ways that I thought I should start a virtual gallery so people could post links to their work and short descriptions.

My Photobucket (http://s219.photobucket.com/albums/cc139/blazeorama/?special_track=nav_tab_album) account has some great stuff and some silly stuff, from costumes I have made to calligraphy and illumination I have done.  I also showcase work some of my friends have done.

My Scribal work is here (http://signet.eastkingdom.org/roster.php?scribe=79).

There are other links listed on that site that you can explore as well.  Sort of like a treasure hunt.

Who will be next?

Okay so...*still blushing from Weird*

Orchids (http://s283.photobucket.com/albums/kk311/Heather_MrsGeek/Orchids/) There are with the exception of the first photo, all untouched. I have gotten a number of them color balanced and contrast/brightness corrected but haven't gotten them uploaded yet.

This  (http://s294.photobucket.com/albums/mm108/The_Mrs_Geek/My%20work/) is a smattering of my work, most of it 35mm black and white.  Again a growing collection as I get more negs scanned and put them through the digital darkroom.  There are also a few of the touched up Orchids there.

Gorgeous work, Tink!  I'm particularly impressed with your black and white images.  Blaze, your scribal work is exquisitely intricate.  Bravo, both of you!

As for me, here (http://priscellie.deviantart.com/)'s my DeviantArt gallery.  I only have a narrow segment of my photography there; the rest is here.

MSD, those are terrific photos!  I think my favorite is the swan rising behind the other swan, who is unperturbed.  What a magic moment to have captured.

Priscellie, love your photography!  The dino theme is great.  Have you ever heard of  the Royal Tyrrell Museum?  Plan a trip there!  Drumheller, Alberta, Canada.  It is in the center of badlands.  Gorgeous scenery, and phenomenal weather.  They have live bone digs, and Drumheller is studded with dinosaur statues.

I put my link up in Weird... And I figure I'll put it up before I get lost contemplating everyone elses work.

I have more pictures that I need to get online, I got some beautiful Autumn leaves this October before it snowed. And somewhere I have pictures of apple blossoms...

But these are my favorite gladiola pictures...

Blaze... The fact that you got those shadows to look so authentic with PS is really a stroke of genius. *is a PS fanatic too*
I recently had to shop the family christmas photos... Let's just say out of 15, not ONE had me, hubby AND baby smiling... So I took the very best pic... and pasted in some heads. heh. IT was easy because the shadows were the same in all the pics, but Hubby walked in and saw me 'perfecting' the image, to the point you couldn't see the edges, watched silently for a while, then said "Remind me never to piss you off."
*smirks wickedly* It's a good thing I've never aspired to make anything... embarrassing... with my skills.

MSD... Prizes don't matter. Next to nothing I shoot is something people would PAY for, but since I shot it, I can see the subtle details that make it beautiful to me. I love your pictures. I lke the swans too, but my favorite is of the skyline lit up. I love architectural photography... *ponders* That reminds me, I really need to post my architectural pics from MileHiCon... not only did I meet Jim there, but the hotel was really neat.

Oh, and Priscellie, I'm highly jealous of the traveling you do... And very impressd by your pictures. The landscapes are fantastic. *hasn't had a chance to look at them all yet*

Edit to add: Tink... You're hubby's a cutie. And he has brains too? Lucky you! *wink* Again, I love your orchids. especially the bright yellow one, I'm a sucker for really radiant flowers.

There... Fixed it. *huggles MSD for saving her embarassment* I shouldn't confuse the Goddess with her Eyebrow.

Annnd... because I've had free time to be productive... More of my pics.

This is the Hyatt Regency Hotel in south Denver, that was kind enough to host Jim Butcher and the MileHiCon in October 2008. I loved the con... But I also loved the hotel. IT was steel construction, with three wings laid out at perfect angles to each other, and alots of blue glass, black steel, and open spaces.

http://s499.photobucket.com/albums/rr359/theliz13/MileHiCon%20-%20Hyatt%20Hotel/

It was lovely... Oh, and the other thing, since it was steel... It moved a lot... I had a lot of vertigo, but not as much as my Hubby, who I scared half a dozen times when I'd stand and lean Waaay over the guardrail to get the perfect picture... Whaaaat? I was only 7 stories up.  ;D

The Gladiolas are wonderful, so is the architectural stuff, Persephone, is that a Portman building?

Glad you liked Mac, Priscellie.  Took me a while, but I think it was worth it.

I am glad that people are posting their work here.  It is a good thing to share.  It has me wondering if I should add an album of my cartoons.  I do cartoons, mostly having fun with the SCA, or with any modern medieval juxtaposition.

Oh wow, cool pix!  I love the juxtaposition of the slate color of the ocean with the peachy colored sky, very dramatic.  The truck is very funny, with the lights in the grill.  LOL  Tell us about the light house!

For all of you that wondered that is on the outer banks of North Carolina.  The truck is my uncle's.  He happened to be driving up the beach and saw me.  Except for the few minutes he stopped I was all alone as far as the eye could see with the just the sunrise, surf, sand and wind.  It was wonderful.

The Lighthouse is the Hatteras Island Light, one of 4 down here.  Pics of the other three coming soon.  I have to shoot two of them tomorrow because it got dark before I got a chance today.  Yay family highjinks.  The second that I have and will post soon is the Ocracoke Island Light which is the second oldest working lighthouse in the US.

Anywhoo...that's all for now.  Again Blaze, great work.

Blaze... I honestly could not tell you. It's a modern building. Hyatt Hotel in Denver... But I have no idea if the architect was in fact modeling it after a certain style. Heh. I came for Jim Butcher, and I stayed for the architecture.
I love your old english lettering and art! *forgive me if there's a certain name for it*

And... I'm posting it here, because I'm really proud of how this one came out... My daughter never holds still long enough for me to take her picture, but this one came out beautifuly... I'm going to print it for my wall.

Gorgeous!  But how can it help but be gorgeous when the subject is so beautiful?   ;)

There is a special name for what I do!  That is calligraphy (the beautiful writing, which is the literal translation of the word) and illumination.  Illumination being the drawing parts.  Thank you, I am glad that you like it.  I am actually only a mediocre calligrapher (or scribe) and feel my forte is the illumination part, but I like doing both, and so I do both.

The letter forms change according to where in history and geography they come from.  There are better examples out there, and I hope that if you are interested will ask me for some URLS.

LOL -- No, I was not commissioned to do that, that is an npc character in the Dresden files RPG I play in.  How'd I do it?

I took this image.

A back ground shot of the park that I copped off a Chicago tourism site (Public domain) and I photoshopped them together!

I wish I could say that I got Wachter to stand by the sign and hold still for me.  LOL

This is how Wachter started life.  I sketched him because even with a good description I felt that the player characters could relate to him better if they actually saw him in a photo.

Speaking of Photoshop...

Take one classic aircraft on display in the middle of a grassy lawn, never to fly again.  Add one picture of the sky taken at an airshow, and shake until mixed:

One thing you'll find out here; we're terrifically non-competitive.

If we say it's great, that's because it is...we don't attach "...but So-and-so's is better" to comments like "Your drawings are excellent".

*huggle snuggles for Torv, MSD and Tribble* Thanks you guys!
Occasionally I wonder if there's a market for selling my photos, but I really have no idea how to do it. And there is a lot better stuff out there. I tend to just get lucky.

Oh and Tribble, I owe most of my neat accomplishments to a plugin created for photoshop by Nikon... It's sort of an extension of the camera software, it allows you to play with shados and saturation and exposure and W/B all in one window... AND it works on jpg! It's a free download off the Nikon site, and I'd recommend it for anyone playing with photoshop.

Have you looked into setting up a store on Etsy?  It's free to have an account although I believe it costs something like 20 cents to post each item and that gets it listed for 4 months.  Once the item sells they take 3.5% of the price.  (That doesn't include shipping - you charge whatever you need to ship it).  It could be a relatively inexpensive way for you to judge what kind of market you'd have.
You can sell photography via CafePress as well, but I think that has more limitations and less profit in the long run.

2 questions:

1. What version of 'shop are you running, as every Photoshop in the CS lineup has drop-down menus and adjustment doohickeys for shadows/saturation/white/black?

2.  Would a Nikon product work nicely with Kodak piccies?

I'm presently using CS3... Friend loaned it to me when he upgraded to CS4. And I still use the existing tools, but I find the plugin has more subtle touches in it. That, and it puts ALL the tools in one little box. If you want to try it, it's free.

And the plugin works with any JPG or RAW. So if your Kodak exports as JPG it won't be a problem.  I found a link to the latest plugin, but if you're running an older version, you can look up the plugin in the Adobe site.

http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/cameraraw.html

Blaze... It's still there I just put my name on it, and that changed the URL. (Cuz Photobucket is dum like that.)

Araneae... That's a good idea, I'll have to look into it. If anyone HERE wants a print, let me know! (I have a PRINTER! ;D )

Thankees Blaze!

Araneae I agree... When I was last in Illinois by the Mississippi (in Moline actually) I just wished I had both time and a car to myself so I could take pictures of a bunch of old abandoned Wharehouses near the waterfront. They were all rusting and falling apart... Just lovely.

Elise... I love your pictures. Especially the one of the Waterfall. Though I figure I should let you know the be careful what you put on Facebook. It still states in the EULA for Facebook photos that they TAKE the copyright from any photos they choose, and claim it as their property. So just be careful.

That said, I also admire your watermarking... Mayhap I should do something similar... Though as stated earlier, I've never prfited from my photos, so I'm not sure how paranoid I should be.
Title: Re: The Virtual Gallery
Post by: OnlyElise on March 13, 2009, 01:42:43 PM
Thanks, Persephone!

From what I saw, they tried to take copyright possession of everyone's pictures last week. Apparently, Facebook has not yet made a profit, and can't even really cover its costs as of yet, so we're thinking they were planning on selling people's pictures as stock footage to make money. Hence, mine are in a low resolution and are watermarked. It would be easier just to leave my stuff the hell alone rather than try to take the watermarks out! I never put a picture online without watermarking it because you just don't know who will take it or why!

OH! I forgot the second part of my post, which is after the poo hit the fan about Facebook's new policy last week they quietly took that clause out and assured everyone they still own all their own stuff. If they were telling the truth, we should be good.

Gorgeous photography!  It is a shame that you have to watermark everything.

The thing I don't like about facebook is that you have to be a member to look at anything.  There are only so many pages that I want to be enrolled in, and I end up enrolling just to see pictures made by friends of mine.
Title: Re: The Virtual Gallery
Post by: OnlyElise on March 13, 2009, 04:48:12 PM
Blaze,
Yeah, it is a shame... I tried to keep the watermark barely noticeable but still there. The owners of Facebook aren't the only people who could swipe one of my pics and sell it to a stock photograph site; anyone could really take one. That's why I kept the resolution on the pictures low so they can't be used for anything broadcast or printed. Glad you like them though!

I agree Blaze... I've actually started watermarking my best work, though it saddens me to do it. It always looks so much better unblemished.

But for anyone who's interested... I've updated my site.

I have new pics in the Autumn leaves section, from last Oct. a few new ones in the Photoshopped section. Oh, and the fire pics I've done are there in the Mod section. (For the record, I was going to put them under 'modeling' but I kindof hate that word, plus I didn't want them to be that accessible under the photobucket keyword search)

I would be honored!  I am pleased to say that all the art works that hang in my house are original pieces, and were given to me by the artists.

Two notable exceptions:  A poster of the Sagrada Familia (By Gaudi) which my best friend brought me from Madrid.  And my Murphy's Law plaque, which my Mom gave me when I was thirteen.  (poetic, 13th birthday, Murphy's Law.)

I've decided to save up and buy a Nikon D80. Half because I can borrow my best friends lenses!  :D
But the hardest part now is waiting until I get the money saved... WAITING IS HARD!
Especially since I keep seeing deals online MSRP is $800. There was a site that offered a 3 day sale where I COULD HAVE gotten it for $309. GAHH!
I wish I had money NOW!

Hope you like 'em Persephone! I think the ones I posted the first time are better, but the ones I put on tonight are okay, I think.

As far as money... there is a mini-DV camera I want on clearance at target. I know it's a good camera because we have the same one at work, but even so, it's hard to justify spending $160 when I can just borrow one from work for the night. The still camera I used to take the pics on my FB page was a $300 one. The pictures are really good but it doesn't have the detachable lenses. It DOES have one hell of a zoom though, as you'll see from the pictures of the lake and its surroundings. I took those from about a half mile to three quarter mile away, and they came out pretty nice.

And as far as me getting an SLR... I'm sortof in the same boat, I have a pretty good Kodak Digital, zooms okay, and does surprisingly good macros, so I don't NEED a new camera... But I've always WANTED a DSLR. So in Hubby's words,
"If you're going to get a new camera, it better be something you'll live with for a LONG time. There's no point in spending $300 on a camera if its not the one you really want."
So that said... I don't even have 300 yet... It'll take me a while to get that much... BUT I HAVE A DREAM! I just hope I don't run into any major financial issues in the meantime.

Persephone, I'm sorry, I didn't see your question about the orchid and waterfall until just now! The orchid was shot at Phipps Conservatory in Pittsburgh, and the waterfall is The Big One... Niagara Falls from the American side. Don't let the pretty colors fool you... it was 38 and raining when that picture was taken!  lol I thought it came out pretty cool, though.

I am not very artistic, in any sense of the word.  But for a living I do 3D design and fabrication.  This is one of my first attempts at this particular design.  I am currently working on a more elaborate one with a more intricate back as well as etching and scrolling on it.  My medium was steel, in particular a 2"x2"x.120wall piece of tubing 24' long.

Its cut from a piece of tubing.  I just cut way the parts I didn't want.  You cut away the pack first, that way there is more stability before the metal gets too hot and starts to expand.  The seat of the chair is the only place that the tube remains uncut all the way around.  I hope that makes sense...  ???

I don't recall it ever being an issue in "developed" caves, but I remember when I used to cave I'd have to hold my breath to take a picture or the flash would reflect off of my breath and the picture would be foggy. :D

I was having a royal panic attack by the fried egg formation and Hubby was too concerned for me to take pictures.

The last time I had been there was a 5th grade field trip.  It's been fun to look at my old photos and see what's changed in 14 years.  (In the caverns that is)

Here's my newest hobby.  I've been designing clothes.  Some of them have been photoshopped to look realistic by a friend.  Most are just done in MSpaint.

As far as big girls (like me) go.  Well the model I used is from a fashion design contest I entered on a game I play.  And I keep doing them on the same model so if they have another contest I already have them on it.  I couldn't find a way to put comments on them after I was finally able to get them all uploaded.  (My web browser kept freezing up.)  And honestly, I haven't really thought about fabrics on some of them.  I've just been doing the designs.  :)

I never realized it, but Bruce Willis would make a good Mac!

For Mac, I like Brian Cox (Argyle in 'Braveheart', Col. Stryker in 'Xmen II', etc).

Tell me you don't want this man to slide you a homebrew and a steak sandwich.

Nice work, how long do the fetish dolls take for you to make?

Have you ever crocheted the seed beads?  You can get the most amazing ropes that way!  Thanks for resurrecting this thread.  Seems like the board spends too much time on TouchyTopics, and not enough admiring the skill of people who create beauty.

Blaze,Chiana- Thank you both very much.

Blaze - the dolls take 50-60 hours each depending on how many interruptions I get.  I have pictures of some
others that I need to post.

I've been meaning to tell you the I love your calligraphy and illuminations they are purely gorgeous.

Chiana - Hurry and put your work up! I wanna see it!

As I avoid the TT thread like the plague I heartily agree with the thought that we shoudl spend more time admiring each
others creativity.

gorgeous gorgeous work, both of you!

The beads were seed beads and bugles, the seed beads were 11s and 12s.

This is what I meant by a crocheted bead rope:

Those are also seed beads, and the rope is wonderful!  Smooth, and almost like a snake skin in texture,

Blaize - First thanks again.

Second - that's a lovely piece of work.  I've seen and handled crocheted
bead ropes - in fact I have 2 that are about 60 years old.  But, I don't
crochet so I've never made one.  I keep thinking that I ought to learn.  :D

Yes, you should learn, because they are a relatively easy thing to make, and you would use them all the time in your work!

I'm not entirely lame after all, I managed to find the thread!

Anyway, my name is Shadra, I'm new here, I draw things. I was pointed o'er this way from Introductions and figured I ought to get some opinions on some current work.

If you want to see older stuff I haven't updated in a while, I'm afraid to admit that they're all fully visibly online at http://shadrad.deviantart.com/.

Due to the unfortunate nature of my work-surfing environment I can't upload my images like a decent web-savvy person to a given FTP site, and apparently I can't upload them here either, so I guess you're stuck seeing my old stuff :( boo. I'll try to upload something from home tonight, though, if I can remember.

Thanks!

And now that I'm home, I can actually share what I wanted to share, which was this:

You can follow a direct link here: http://pics.livejournal.com/shadrad/pic/0012qdkk for a bigger size, as this forum automatically shrinks them (thank goodness)

Anyway, It probably looks funny and a little too murky/dark because it's only half done, but what I'd actually really like from the folks here (since one assumes a majority are the fantasy-inclined) are some ideas of what kinds of patterns to put on the domes of the jellyfish. I'd really like something that looks distinctly abnormal, but I've yet to find anything that really calls to me.

It's been suggested I try some celtic knotwork but I don't think I'm quite -that- insane, but without other ideas I may be left no choice. Still, can anyone suggest anything?

I *love* jellyfish! Our local aquarium has a decent jelly exhibit. They are so peaceful to watch.

How about some fractals. Math is the universal language right?

I would imagine that Atlantis would have had an elvish looking script, very fluid language, so the calligraphy angle works too.

One of the lessons I've learned in living overseas is that sometimes the places and people
you expect to be the most alien are actually the most similar and those you'd expect to
be similar can at times be the most alien.

Sometimes I think my coworkers ARE aliens.  ;) :D But seriously, I agree. I feel a little... uncultured... given that I've never gone overseas. The thought of being in a country where no one understands what I'm saying frightens me. But there are times when I see so many amazing things, that I hope someday to conquer that hurdle and travel. Someday! I hope!

Seph - I speak very little Russian.  When I first went overseas I only spoke English and  high school
Spanish, my first overseas country was Italy....I learned then that if you learn a very few words,
(please, thank you, etc.) and are polite and smile a lot, especially if you can laugh at yourself then
you'll be treated well by the majority of the people you meet.

Also, you might be surprised at the number of people who speak a little English now days...in Western
Europe English has taken the place of French as the most common language spoken by people from
different countries.

*Recalls her freshman French Teacher teaching her to say:  "Je suis Canadienne" LOL*   I am American, but in 1972, apparently you just shouldn't say that in France.   :o

I love the pictures people!  and that falcon is so wonderful to see.  Here in Kingston NY we actually have an established colony of Bald Eagles!  It used to be a rarity to even find an eagle, but now, you can see half a dozen if you go down by the River.  So wonderful.  And Wild Turkeys and Red Tail Hawks, and we are a city, people.  Smallest city in NY State.

I have traveled a lot, and found that most people are nice, friendly and willing to be your friend if you are willing to be theirs.

So this is probably as good a place as any to ask... I'm thinking of setting up a DeviantArt.com account to showcase and possibly sell some photos. I just wonder if anyone here has tried them. Mostly I'm weight the pros and cons between them, Etsy, and setting up a private site and trying to finangle the sales on my own.

I don't even know if anything will sell... but, with all the time I have on my hands now, I figure I could at least try it. I just need a cost effective solution.

ANY advice would be welcome!

I need to upload the color corrected photos or I should say, color balanced photos.  It was either really gray and cloudy or extremely sunny in all my photos so they needed some tweeking.

LC Thanks! Everyone seems to love the picture of Lilbit! I'd spend more of my time photographing her if she didn't make it so hard!  :D Kids are the hardest thing to get good pictures of, but it makes that one good picture all the more priceless.
I do have one really good picture of her, but it's sort of like my Mona Lisa, I'm loathe to display it just yet... I'm not sure if I'm ready to share it.

Tribble... That's a really awesome picture! I can't scetch to save my life and I env those who can. Plus I love all the different elements. Reminds me of the really old school sci-fi covers.

So anyone who has been paying attention knows that for the past number of years I do the February cover for Pikestaff, the Official Newsletter of the East Kingdom.  2010's cover will be in color!
The working title is "Eastern Hospitality"  but the real subject is "how to treat your seneschal"  The guy in the tub is my hubby.  and I am the toots with the loving cup.  My oldest son is scrubbing his dad's arm, and the blonde is Aphrodite.  The part of scullery wench was played by an extra....

I really like how it turned out.

Plus, I just realized that this is at least my eleventh year of doing the February cover!

Well, how about them?  Other people do them!  You should look up the fan art master thread.  I only do nude male characters because the rest of these fine ladies pointed out a deficit there to me.

My first male (almost) nude was Waldo playing the accordion.  (Which is why he made me put boxers on him.)

You really should.  It's a lot of fun and if you don't mind just looking at buildings (not in) and eavesdropping on the people in colonial dress giving talks then you can do it for FREE.  There are several buildings/shops you can go in without the patriot pass, but you do need it to see things like the Capitol Building and Governor's Mansion.

Weather wise the best time to do it is April/early May as long as you don't mind dodging elementary school groups there on field trips. The end of the season is Sept/Oct which is another good time to come because both those periods aren't stifling hot.

Blaze... This ones for you.

My first attempt at edible art. Nummy white chocolate easter noms.
I can't eat chocolate anymore, so this is one of THOSE holidays where I've felt left by the wayside.
So I got the stuff to make my own WHITE chocolate candy.
