DFRPG / Re: [Template] Undying

Do note that there is no way to become truly deathless even with this ability.

In the broadest sense, you are very correct and I had no intention of making a template that couldn't be destroyed or defeated.

Someone could still eat your soul or destroy your mind so your undying body would be just an empty husk.

If the damage is mental and not physical then yep, you could be a brain dead Undying.

Someone could use Transformation to alter your body and remove the deathless ability then kill you.

I think that would depend on a GM ruling. I wouldn't allow a Emissary of Power to be transformed into a chipmunk so that their Marked by Power ability was removed. Your just now a chipmunk that is Marked by Power. I'd make the same ruling in the Deathless abilities case.

Someone could use Disruption to reduce you to a pile of smoking ashes (an extreme consequence you won't recover from)

Ahh, thank-you for this one. Reminded me I had accidentally deleted the line that covered this. It is now in the Note on the Deathless power. It says, "The result of extreme measures that could cause total destruction of the character (for example, immersion in a star) should be decided during character creation if they are applicable to the story." That should cover most things like this. Player and GM decide when the character is created what happens in such situations.

apply a generational curse of ridiculous bad luck that gives you a random "lethal" effect every exchange so it keeps you dead

The bad luck doesn't relate to the power, but if you consider "lethal effect" and "death result" to mean the same thing then, just like Living Dead power, it couldn't make you dead, though it could to the damage.

or someone could use Transportation/Worldwalking to reverse-age you to before you were born, balefire you out of the currents of time or kick you out of the Outer Gates.

None of which are appling a "death" effect to the character, so sure they work, but they don't activate the Deathless power by themselves.

DFRPG / [Template] Undying

This template is for a type of character that I've used in almost every campaign since I was in high-school. The concept is based on a short story I read somewhere, I think it was on some BBS, but I haven't been able to find it with google, so it may be lost forever to me. The closest comparison I can point to is Jack Harkness from Torchwood in the Doctor Who universe, but without all the Doctor Who-specific stuff.

I'll quote the Template's first paragraph to give you the basic idea.
Quote
It is said there are two things no one can avoid, death and taxes. Well, Undying are the exception to the former. To say it again. They. Can. NOT. Die. If you cut off the head of an Undying and set that head on fire, all that you would accomplish is to create a burning head screaming in pain. They may not die, but they bleed and feel pain like anyone else.

Anyway, with much help from everyone in the Jack Harkness thread, I was able to cobble together what I think is a very cool Template. So here is a link to the web-pages for the Template and its one custom Power. Have fun, not being able to die (or being forced to live depending on your view point) makes a very interesting character and I've always enjoyed them. :D

well i made one that isn't quite as printer friendly as the other pdf but i like it http://www.mediafire.com/?kzmnutbjkgo

That looks pretty good. Couple things, I noticed you can't save it and on the second page you can't type text into the Character and Player boxes. All and all, very nice.

Only concern is legality of distributing...

@all that are interested :)

DFRPG is released under the Open Gaming License which is pretty open, and I'm assuming that choice in license was intentional.

A couple things when making decisions about releasing stuff.

1) If you are not verbatim copy/pasting from the books then there is no issue at all and you are in the clear. Describing things in your own words, automating game mechanics, using identifying terms (like Template, High Concept, Aspect, Wizard, names and mechanics of skills/stunts/powers, etc), or using creations of Jim Butcher (like Harry Dresden, White Council, etc) are all ok and clearly covered under the Open Gaming License of the rpg or the Creative Commons Attribution Non-Commercial license of Jim Butcher fan creations. Basically, those licenses mean it is ok to use that stuff as long as you give credit and don't try to make a profit.

2) A good rule of thumb is to ask yourself the following question. Would what you release make someone go, "Ooo, I don't need to buy the books now!!"? If so then probably shouldn't release it. On the other hand, if what you want to release would make people say, "Cool, when I get the books that will really help out!!", then you should be alright.

3) I would like to note that this thread is devoted to utilities for handling characters and such, and it has been stickied by the staff for what that is worth to anyone. If nothing else, you got to figure that this thread is read by some moderator that would pass the word if "bad stuff" was posted.

4) If you still aren't sure, post up what parts of the books you are recreating and I'm sure people can let you know in general if it could be an issue or not.

5) If all else fails, feel free to pm me a link to what you got. I am not a lawyer, but I've dealt with licenses for several years now and am always happy to lend an opinion. Something being clearly not ok or totally ok is pretty easy to spot once you've read through the legalize of the licenses a few dozen times.

Hope that helps. Just my opinion as some nobody on the web, but if I'm wrong in any of this please some one official jump up and smack me down with correct info as I have no desire to spread incorrectness. :)

Some nice ideas guys. I've had a few in-depth debates with some friends on this topic and the consensus seems to be that the extra effect to the Deathless power is unnecessary as the same thematic result could be achieved other ways and isn't central to the purpose of the power at hand. I don't 100 percent agree, but I see their point and after reading wyvern's post I'm starting to think that what I was looking for could better be done as its own stand-alone power or maybe a stunt.

Either way, the Deathless power as I posted solves my main concerns, namely convoluted writing of the descriptions and locking down of the Physical Immunity power.

For Jack take out the "temporarily dead" part.  He can die for brief bits, but sort of plot devices at the end of the scene he's alive with his Mythic Recovery having taken effect.

Ahh, but does he die briefly or is he just unconscious? I site the event where he was buried for 2,000 years and when his body was brought out his skin was still nice and pink. This would seem to suggest that his body wasn't truly dead, just in a deep suspended animation-like state.

EDIT: I made the template its own thread since it is more general then just Jack. Thanks for all the help guys, this turned out better then I could have hoped for. :)

Nice on the Michael Westen, Fiona and Sam would also make good examples of Pure Mortals that can hold there own. Sam with his Seal training and Contacts, and Fiona putting holes in everything or making it go boom... the three of them really show what Pure Mortals can do when they put their minds to it.

Ok, been a while, but I think I've put together a custom power that works nicely, but first I'm going to cover the reasons I think a new power is justified.

1) I don't like the idea of locking down Physical Immunity. Since, unlike Immortals, they don't have a weakness to their death immunity, I don't see any harm in an Undying character taking a Physical Immunity of whatever type would normally be allowed by the group.

2) Wording it as a catch gets confusing since you have to describe the exceptions to the power instead of as its effects. In other words, "You are immune to death" is easier to understand then "Physical Immunity doesn't apply to anything except death", at least when it is more complex then those simple examples. ;)

3) There are other particulars I think fit well with the template and they need their own power any way, so it don't hurt to move the no-death effect to that power.

Anyway, that said, here is the power I came up with.

Deathless [-2]

Note: The result of extreme measures that could cause total destruction of the character (for example, immersion in a star) should be decided during character creation if they are applicable to the story.

Effects:

Endless Life: Drowning, starvation, gun-shots, stabbing, explosions, fire, etc, the cause doesn't matter, you are so full of life-force that death can not touch you; however, if your brain is in a shape to process input, you'll get to feel every agonizing moment of it. You take stress and consequences normally, though no "death" result is ever possible. This essence of life resides in a specific organ of the body (generally head or heart) decided on at creation time. Without any upgrades to this ability, the character can only control pieces of their body when they are connected to this organ. For example, if the life-essence was centered in the head and the head was removed, the eyes and mouth would still be controllable, but the body would not.

Parts of a Whole [-2]: Increasing the refresh cost of this ability by 2 will allow severed body parts to be controlled independently, hands can still grab, eyes can still see, legs can still kick, etc. All actions performed by the body parts not connected to the specified essence center receive a -1 penalty if they are visible to the character and at least -2 if not. If a new body part is regenerated to replace the old one, then all connection to the previous part is lost.

--------------------------------------------------------------

My question, does the upgrade cost of -2 sound right?

I also have a third effect I'm working on, but I can't figure out what type of benefit it should get. This is what I have so far.

The thematics...
Pain Don't Hurt: Living through death a handfull of times really puts pain into perspective.

Here is what I've been thinking about for the rest...

a) Gain +3 on any roll to resist or overcome physical pain.

or

b) Receive 2 additional Mild (umm.. Mental or Physical?) Consequence.

or

c) You get 2 additional (again.. Mental or Physical?) Stress boxes.

As you can see, I'm not sure if the "resistance to pain" should model around Mental or Physical. As for the numbers in any of those, they were just of the top of my head.

Any advice on the mechanics of how to implement "getting use to the pain after living though damage that would kill everyone else"?

Also, I know the GM controls the NPCs, but does the GM ever have their own character?  Or is that sort of self serving?

The answer to that is going to be different depending on the GM. I personally always have a character I make with the rest of the players and play my character while GMing. But to do that, the GM has to be able to keep their character's knowledge separate from their GM knowledge, just like IC vs OOC, but a little trickier since the GM knows everything. Basicly a GM is only going to have their own character if they want to, and should only have one if they can handle the extra load a GMC has over an NPC.

Jeckel, I think as long as nothing you put up tells people how to play the game it should be safe. I'm sure they've probably looked at your page already since you've mentioned it a few times in this, the official forum, and they've yet to say anything.

I agree and thanks for the encouragement. :)

Not An Easy Target. You are quick on your feet, and hard to hit, add a +1 to your athletics rolls when dodging attacks.

Should this give a +2 since it is applied to a single trapping of Athletics or is it only +1 because its a defense trapping?

@ Jeckel I'd be careful making a list like that available to the public.  Putting that much stuff verbatim from the DFRPG product might be seen as a copyright violation against Evil Hat.

I understand what your saying, and the same thoughts have been bubbling around in my mind for quite a while now. I'll lay out the points that won in my mental debates.

1) I'm very conscious of copyrights, if for no other reason then out of respect for developers, so I've wait quite a while before releasing any of these sort of canon compiled lists. From what I have read around the forums, many people have mentioned (though never actually produced and released) making such compiled lists and nothing has been said by the devs that it would not be acceptable.

2) To get a little technical as per the Open Game License. "Derivative Material" is defined to include, among other things, "translations (including into other computer languages)" and "compilation", which is the two main things I did, compile them and translate them to the web. Something like a stunt that is both words and stats in one inseparable unit floats in some gray area between "Product Identity" (which can't be flatly excluded or any quote from the book to the forums would constitute infringement) and "Open Game Content". But... I'm not a lawyer and the OGL has some of the most confusing and contradictory definitions I've seen in a license, so I could be wrong in my reading.

3) The purpose of copyright is to keep others from costing you money or making money of your products. Common sense would say that a list of the example stunts wouldn't keep anyone from buying the books and I have no plans of making money of a fan-site, so I think I'm good on both those accounts.

4) Lastly, I only did this to make it easier for people to create custom stunts without repeating the canon ones. Had the stunts been done like other systems, with a name, list of stats, and a fluff description then I would have included the names and stats without the description. But in this context the description and mechanic rules of the stunts are one and the same.

All that said, if it becomes an issue, I can turn two knobs in the code and all the canon items will be removed from the page. Fingers crossed that it is only seen as intended, as a contribution to help the community. :)

For now I'm back to compiling the custom stunts from this thread to the web-page. My long term goal is to have at least as many fan stunts as there are canon stunts.

Been away from stunts for a bit now, working mostly on characters, but I'm back to compiling stunts together. Will prob pop up with a few for tweaking suggestions at some point, but for now I'm doing the easy, obviously balanced ones first. I must say, there are some really good ones all over the thread, much props to everyone. 8)

Seeing as the books have shipped and at least one of the people in my group should have theirs within a week or so, I went ahead and made the descriptions of canon stunts visible on the stunts page. I also made the canon stunts' text dark red so it is easy to tell them from the fan created ones.

Found a typo, you've got School of Piranha spelled 'Pirranha'. :)

Thanks for the notice on sheet changes, that will make things so much easier. I followed suit and added a line to the bottom of each sheet telling what date its data was last modified on the web-site. Also, I added the last modified date after the link to Ravangames's PDF. Now people will know if your updates have been propagated to the other formats yet.

-------------------------------------------------------

Doing the locusts swarm as an environmental hazarded mixed with a few "Person sized swarms" worked out really well. My players planned ahead very well and managed to save 2 of their 6 fields. I finally got to throw a Grizzly Bear at them when they were driving their cattle to the auction house in the next territory. The wizard (who is a Coward With a Heart of Gold) lost his intimidation defense and was ran away "screaming like a little girl". :D Long story short, one of the NPC cattle herders was injured pretty bad, but no cattle were lost and the sale was made.

They had so much fun with the locusts and the bear that we paused before returning to the farm. Next session I'll get to break the Shetland Pony twist to the rest of the group. These have been some of the funnest sessions I've had since college. 8)
