So I said to my husband, "Honey-my-pie, could we go to Comic Con in October?" And the man who is Mr. Logical, and never answers without asking a dozen key questions first (salient ones like: "And where is the money for this coming from?") replied:
"Yes."
:o
I am gonna be there!!!!!!!
(Have I mentioned that he is a keeper?)
I told this to my b/f, and his response was "Well, I guess we'll have to go to the city that weekend." Though if I got my way, we'd be there anyway for the LOTR thing. And it's the weekend after my birthday.
That Friday and Saturday night, at Radio City, there will be a showing of Two Towers accompanied by a full symphony playing the music. They did Fellowship last year, and I wanted to go to that one, but I only found out about it a couple weeks beforehand.
NO. FREAKING. WAY.Yup. Look on the ComicCon site, under the events link. Or the Radio City website. And I'm guessing they'll be doing the same with Return of the King next year.
Why would they do that during Comic Con, when everyone has other geeky stuff to do in the evenings? Aaaaaargh, WANT.My b/f's guess is that it's cause that's the weekend Radio City had free. My guess is that they're going after the geeks like me who don't generally go to the evening stuff like costume contests and things. Though I dunno what NYCC has.
Do we know what day Jim will be at ComicCon?
How's the Hotel Pennsylvania? Found a decent package on hotwire.
Got my hotel Rez! Now? Should I pre-reg for the Con or buy tickets at the door? HALP! HALP! Haven't been to a Con since the Star Trek Convention at the Americana in 1972!!Pre reg. There is a good chance the con will be sold out if you try to buy at the door.
Cool, now where do I do that?
My b/f and I should probably figure out this one. Only thing we've agreed on so far is that we're taking the train into the city. But that can wait until after we get home tomorrow and see about how much this weekend cost.
That Friday and Saturday night, at Radio City, there will be a showing of Two Towers accompanied by a full symphony playing the music. They did Fellowship last year, and I wanted to go to that one, but I only found out about it a couple weeks beforehand.
NO. FREAKING. WAY.I second that freak out and want you to know that this has broken my little geeky heart for I cannot afford to go, However I had been considering SDCC next year and methinks I will just have to re-think that idea... :D
All righty, for those of you familiar with the city. My b/f and I are looking for a place to stay for this thing, and not sure what to do. Better to go with one that the NYCC site suggests, or look around at travel sites? My b/f's not much help with this cause even though he's been living just an hour from the city his entire life, he's been there like 3 times. And we really don't want to take the train every day, cause that's like an hour one way.
Combine the two sources and see what you come up with. Seriously. You never know what you might find. And the logicalness of this response tells me that I should try again tomorrow after sleep. I'll blame it on the smoke from the casino. Or something. Yeah. That.
SO whats edict for meeting an author at an event like this? If I showed up with a stack of Dresden books and a pen would that be out of line?
::)
Maybe if I promise to take the wife to a show on broadway she'd actually let me go!
Yay! Hotel reservations made! Now to decide when to see the LotR concert, Friday or Saturday?

I'm planning a fan dinner on Saturday, so you should probably go Friday. :D
I talked to Jim!
Me: I know you have the "three books the first time one goes through the line, the rest after everyone else had a chance to meet you" at bookstores, but does that change at conventions?
Jim: Depends on what the convention has set up. Generally speaking, its my guideline. I'll sign until everyone's done, but only three at a time.
I'm planning a fan dinner on Saturday, so you should probably go Friday. :D
I'll be driving down from Connecticut with a couple of friends, if there's still room for more at the dinner. :)Driving? Oh, there's no train? That's what I'm doing.
Driving? Oh, there's no train? That's what I'm doing.
Have I told you recently how beautiful you are... ;D
I would also be willing to help do prep work local like (I'm in Jersey) with some advance notice.
No, I will not rent out a Burger King. :D
No, I will not rent out a Burger King. :DThis could be kinda awesome. And possibly one of the cheapest/best ways to manage a group that big.
I value my internal organs. I respect my body and my health. I'm not setting foot inside a Burger King. :D
Suggestions, fools!
I shall inquire!
Edit: Left a message with their private event planning folks. Hopefully they'll call back in the morning. Otherwise, I'll try again.
If not, I can talk to my mom. She arranged meetings for her company at the 51st and 6th building (she worked ten floors above em). She should (nothing is a guarantee, especially with my family) still know who to get in touch with there.
how early of a rsvp do you need?
Grargh. There has to be a large venue in New York somewhere between a $40 meal and a diner...
Yet another idea – Call the New York public library, tell them you're organizing a literary event, and ask if they have someone who arranges for functions. See if she (or he) has a list of venues in your price range. The locals ought to know the good spots, and libraries ought to be a soft touch for helping out an author.
Yeah, I'm hoping to find a place where we can do under $25 a head, including the space. I'm thinking my ideal place has no cover, and folks can just order whatever they want off the menu.
I wonder if the Irish Rogue or Bullmoose Saloon would be more reasonable...
The Irish Rogue is accustomed to geeks, too. They were the original home of the NYC Browncoats meetups, before they moved next door.
Man, I wish I knew of a pub/grill that was underground, which we could masquerade as Mac's for an evening.
Man, I wish I knew of a pub/grill that was underground, which we could masquerade as Mac's for an evening.
Hell, if it worked, we could have seasonal meetups of the NYC Area Dresden Philes (or the Butcher Bloc). And make honorary "ACCORDED NEUTRAL TERRITORY" signs for the place
I'd ne done for a fan dinner, but still need to convince my wife.... Silly broadway doesn't have showtimes that fare in advance it would seem. =/
Done and Done, damn NYC hotels are pricey. if it was just me I'd have stayed at a Hostel, but seeing as I'm planning the whole trip with apeassing the wife in mind I figured that would be a no go. Now off to search for suitable copies of all the books to be signed! waahoooo.
Ah.
The website mentions getting tickets as late as Sept 10th (and even having them mailed to you). I assume there's no chance of selling out before then? I'd just rather not spend the extra $30 if I won't be using it.
I searched the NYCC site, and can't find a mention of Jim? I'm a bit worried :-\They don't have all the guests up yet. They only started putting 'em up recently. But both Priscellie and his editor said he's going to be there.
They don't have all the guests up yet. They only started putting 'em up recently. But both Priscellie and his editor said he's going to be there.
That's because Jim said he'd be there. :DYeah, that too. :D
Okay, so it looks like I'll be doing the train and hotel thing after all. For the dinner, put me down as attending with one guest. A friend wants to tag along with me. :)
Hi, All!
Newbie to the forum here. I went to NYCC last year and had a blast! Already registered for this year too and just found out Jim would be attending--Yay!! ;D
I have a question about this Saturday dinner: Can anyone sign up? Or is it invite only?? *crossing fingers and looking hopeful*
Put me plus 2 others down as maybe. Mutable figure, though—it all depends on how many people want to share a room with me, and then want to come see the Burger King hisself. Probably 3-5 people, myself included. If that be all right.
... huh. Just realized that there will be at least five mods there. WORLD, BE WARNED.
Okay, we need to find a suitable Mac's. All four barkeeps will be there.
Wooden swords are allowed. It's just that they kind of throw off a lot of otherwise excellent costuming. Feh.What about painted wooden swords?
Throwing this out there, but I checked the NY Comic Con website, and Jim Butcher wasn't listed as a quest who as going to be there. Does the website not list authors as quests who are going, or is Jim just going to go, not to neccesarily have a booth and sign things, etc.?
The NYCC website is pretty slow to update. Jim will definitely be signing at the Penguin Booth (and probably Mysterious Galaxy or Midtown Comics, as well), and he will participate in panels.
Bah, thinking of SDCC. Must've just been Midtown Comics in years past.
put me down as a yes for dinner im not sure which day i will be at the con
Please put me down for the dinner. I'll be at the con as well.
Thanks-
Jacob

I have a questions he is not on the artist list or guest list is he just attending or being part of the show?
thank you
Hold off on RSVPing for a couple days, folks. I'm renegotiating with the venue. At this point, it looks like this will be a ticketed event. My rough guess is that it will be $30 per person, which will include food. I should have an exact figure in the next few days, and I will add a PayPal button so that folks can purchase tickets.
I'm really excited about what this means. Hopefully, I'll be able to make an announcement soon.
Seconded! Except the adoption thing, because I hold out hope that some day you and my 24 year old son will sit and discover each other, and I can be your second Mom!
(If my sons saw this, crimson from stem to stern. ;))
Renegotiation is a RESOUNDING SUCCESS! This is now a private, ticketed event, and we'll have the entire upstairs to ourselves from 8 to 11pm. For a mere 30 bucks, you can:
--> Rub elbows with Penguin senior editor Anne Sowards, agent Jenn Jackson, cover artist Chris McGrath, and some dude named JIM FREAKING BUTCHER.
--> Participate in cosplay and trivia contests with FABULOUS prizes!
--> Enjoy unlimited access to an assortment of appetizers and entrees, plus your choice of dessert. (Drinks are extra.)
--> And anything else I can think of!
I'll set up the PayPal stuff tonight, so folks can purchase their tickets. Are you as excited as I am?
Going there now. Whee
I have boughtened of the tickets for Elise and I. Housing at Hotel Sheckums arranged.
There shall be much rejoicing.
Capital!
I don't get paid till Friday! *flail!*
A week from today, you mean? No prob. I'll hold your two spots until next Sunday. If you need more time than that, let me know. Thanks for keeping me informed!
Thank you for doing this. We are new fans to Jim's books and we're very excited.
Victory accomplished! One ticket purchased, under the name Ben S. (Just so you don't hold onto that ticket for a Sunshine anymore. :P)
I'm super excited! Yay! Also, hopefully I've finally got my damn PayPal account sorted out. Hmph.
~Duk
Well darn. That's what I get for not paying attention to the thread in a few days and not knowing I could actually be going until 20 minutes ago.
:-\
*follows on Twitter*
Is Jim going to be around for signing on Friday?
Woohoo! All I have to do for this now is wait; got my tickets to the LotR concert last night.
Just make sure they're not for the Oct. 8th showing. I've come too close to making a similar mistake too many times.
The party is October 9th. The 8th is Friday.
Remember 10-9-8! Tenth month, ninth day, 8pm!
So is there a chance of Jim speaking on 10/10/10 at 10:10?
You shall have both in SPADES.
I guarantee this emotion in all attendees:
We'll be receiving Brit passports? :o
Oh, neither. That's why it works. Cue sticks + grey cloaks = ;D
And as a side note, a question for all you NYC area peoples. How close is Morristown, NJ from NYC? Close-ish?
The heck? This indicated otherwise: http://www.njtransit.com/ti/ti_servlet.srv?hdnPageAction=TicketOfficesTo
Anyway, glad Morristown is an option. But I just realized that because Kat isn't going to be able to make it to NYCC, my futon is available! Want to be in Manhattan? If Fred ends up being able to come, you'll have to share with him, but the futon has slept two before. Or I can see if one of my coworkers has an air mattress I can borrow.
Long story short, there's space for you if you want it!

I've said it before, but I'll say it again: Priscellie is awesome. I'd take you up on your offer, but I have a friend coming down from Maine for NYCC, so I wouldn't want to inconvenience Fred, if he's able to come. Unless having 2-3 sleeping on your futon and floor doesn't bother you.
NOTE: THE TIME FOR THIS EVENT HAS CHANGED!
The party will now be 7-10pm, NOT 8-11.
Yeah, but Ellie won't be the only person under the age of 21 in attendance. I don't want Garrett kicked out, either. :D

I'll adopt him if that's what it takes.
Ah, the venue shifts to Potiential Drinking Customers Only at 11PM then? Yeah, if they stop serving food at a certain time, I can see them having to shoo the littlies out at that time.
Que sera sera! We roll with the punches. The party will still be skull-explodingly awesome!
What time are you planning to arrive at the Rogue for setting-up?
so will jim by chance be doing autographes during new york comic con? either at the dinner or the event itself? I would love to get my collection the ones not already signed, signed :p

So is Jim gonna be there all three days, or just one day for autographs? I'm confused again.
Please please please have him there friday since that's the only time I can be at the con (will be there for dinner of course).
Now with more JIM!
Free spicy brainz in every box!
The auctions will go up on eBay in the middle of September. I'll post info on the forum, Jim's news site, the mailing list, and the @JimAtNYCC10 Twitter account. You'll have to be living under a rock to miss it!
Are there folks who would buy a plane ticket to attend this party?
Sometimes, ya'll scare me. :D But I'll have my camera there.
See, I was figuring it more for the eyebrow of DOOM and Shecky and PG crying.
I blame Jim for the scene in the limo in Changes. That song was my brain's official soundtrack for the scene. I kind of want to draw it in Clone High style.
Yeah... that's pretty much where I think it'll end up myself. Now, if Shecky were more purty we might get away with it....
Hey Shecky, how about a Makeover when Elise and I come over?
Yes. And I still haven't heard the end of the lawsuits for fried retinas over that episode.Arrrgggghhhhh...... The pink it hurts the eyes
Do what I did to offset the legal costs from when I dressed as Dr. Frankenfurter. Bust up the people turned to pillars of salt, then sell the chunks to the local sporting goods and feed stores as salt licks.
Shecky, you are RADIANT.

Oh, good; for a moment, I was afraid you'd end that sentence with "George".
Molly!
I'll be going as my geeky self. Only costume I have is a Jedi costume, and I think it would be too hot. And I've had issues with the lightsaber bits falling off. But I might wear my elf ears or fangs to annoy my b/f. :D
October should be reasonably cool in NYC. Just FYI.Yeah, but not necessarily in a convention center full of people. Plus the costume is something like 3 layers, 4 including the cloak, and I get hot too easily.

Uhm, this isn't the place to talk about it. But PM me about the costume and the saber. I've been with NY Jedi for a year and a half, and have done more than my fair share of con runs. So I should be able to help, if not point you in the right direction.Oh, neither's really all that much of a problem. I have tons of material and at least two patterns I could use to make another; I just don't want to put in the time because I'm writing. And the lightsaber's something I put together in college, so it's got lots of different issues, and I've just not spent the money to buy a replica or to make a better one. Not yet, anyway.
Yeah, but not necessarily in a convention center full of people. Plus the costume is something like 3 layers, 4 including the cloak, and I get hot too easily.
Last NYCC, I was dressed as Maeve, which is already pretty skimpy. I had to take my wig off, because I was overheating. Really heavy costumes, not such a good idea for the con floor.
Man, I have NO IDEA who to go as! Who in the series has long (well past my shoulders) curly hair and glasses? 'Cause I ain't getting a haircut, and I am blind as a bat without my lenses...
Any ideas?

In hopes that I'll be able to get a reasonably decent seat, I'm definitely bringing our Flip. Also the netbook to download video and clear out the Flip memory so I can record more. :DAnd a tangent, how do you like the Flip? My b/f is thinking about getting something like that.
Peter V. Brett broke the news, so I guess it's okay to tell everyone now: Jim will take part in NYCC's Epic Fantasy Panel at 7:30pm-8:30pm on Friday, October 8th. It will include Joe Abercrombie, Peter V. Brett, Jim Butcher, Naomi Novik (and possibly Brandon Sanderson).
http://www.petervbrett.com/2010/09/16/new-york-comiccon-is-coming/
Jim's signings are still being negotiated. We should have details before the middle of next week.
Hey, what happened to all those folks who were devastated to have missed the sale? Ticket #3 doesn't have a single bid yet. :D
Woohoo! Was a chance I knew I was taking with going to the concert.
And a tangent, how do you like the Flip? My b/f is thinking about getting something like that.

NOOOOO!!!! :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[
Ugh. I just knew that was going to happen to me. Is there any chance to please put in a request for book signings on Sunday (crosses fingers)?

Mine are different.
Anybody want mine? :P :P :P
Seriously though, I got the weekend pass in the hope of catching Jim on Sunday or Friday morning. I knew all along this was a gamble, it just didn't pay off.
I may still make it for a couple of hours on Sunday, but if anyone in NYC wants to borrow a pass for Jim's talk on Friday night...
a trip to philly to see R. A. Salvatore.
Yeah, I have the poster that came with the boxed set of books 1-3. I wants it signed. :D Pity GS isn't out—that's my favorite cover yet.
Dresden. Mistborn. Toby Daye. It seems Chris is doing the cover art for all my favourite series lately. :D
Why not email him and ask him if he'll sell you a poster of it? He sells poster prints for $30, and I don't see why GS shouldn't be included. He gave me several prints a couple years back, when his Dresden calendar sold out--they're absolutely gorgeous.
Dresden. Mistborn. Toby Daye. It seems Chris is doing the cover art for all my favourite series lately. :DHehe..I've actually picked up books because I've recognized his artwork on the cover.
Remember, folks, the con doors don't officially open on Friday until 1 PM. There's no Friday morning at the con.
and since i'm going up thursday night to stay with a friend all weekend... that means i have to find something to do. whatever will i do to spend my day in nyc? heee!
Heard back from Chris. He doesn't have any signings scheduled. I'll poke Anne Sowards when she returns from her vacation and ask if Penguin wants him to sign alongside Jim, as he has in the past.
I have Jim's tentative schedule for NYCC! This is subject to change, of course. I'll let you know if that happens. I find it a little surprising that he seems to be scheduled for only one panel, so who knows? The first signing is at table 4 in Autograph Alley--just put up the autograph info. Second signing isn't listed, but I'd expect the info to change. http://www.newyorkcomiccon.com/en/NYCC/Autographs/Autograph-Alley/ (http://www.newyorkcomiccon.com/en/NYCC/Autographs/Autograph-Alley/)
FRIDAY:
7:30pm - 8:30pm - Epic Fantasy Panel, with Joe Abercrombie, Peter V. Brett, Jim Butcher, Naomi Novik, and possibly Brandon Sanderson.
SATURDAY:
12pm - 1pm: Signing
4pm - 6pm: Signing
7pm - 10pm: Fan Dinner
I don't have any details about the locations of his signings yet.
... hmm. I recall being able to find a floor map with all the rooms enumerated last year. Maybe they haven't settled on an actual arrangement yet. From what I've seen, there's not a floor map with the booth numbers, but they have both a list and a floor map separate. http://www.newyorkcomiccon.com/en/NYCC/Overview/My-Show-Planner/?utm_source=website&utm_medium=website&utm_campaign=NYCC%2BMYS%2BSlider (http://www.newyorkcomiccon.com/en/NYCC/Overview/My-Show-Planner/?utm_source=website&utm_medium=website&utm_campaign=NYCC%2BMYS%2BSlider)
He'll be on the Epic Fantasy Panel Friday night with Joe Abercrombie, Peter V. Brett, Jim Butcher, Naomi Novik, and possibly Brandon Sanderson.
He has two signings on Saturday, but no panel.
So yeah, scrubs. And then the expensive bit—a couple of secret something-or-others. ;D
So yeah, scrubs. And then the expensive bit. ;D
*reels* okay, 'Cellie has an arm on her. Ow. *rubs jaw*
Ha! You didn't have to change it. I was kidding. My office recently started a blog for funny things taken out of context, so my brain is extra-wired for potential euphemisms. :D
So is mine, yet I cannot for the life of me figure out what brought on a slap. *eyebrow*
It's cause it was edited. Go back up to 'Cellie's *slap slap* post and read the quote there.
That or it'll keep crawling around in Shecky's brain until something starts to leak, kind of like Lewis Black with that phrase "If it weren't for my horse, I'd never have spent that year in college." He might think he's thinking of something else, but the subconcious might be spinning it like a speed tweek ferret in a hamster wheel....
DAMN YOU.
So is Jim going to be there on Sunday at all?
He doesn't have anything officially scheduled. He might snoop around the con as a fan for a bit. I imagine he'll play it by ear.
"How has Harry explained all those neatly arranged, but heavily used XXX romance novels in his lab to Molly, and does she believe his explanation?"
...I'm still willing to loan my weekend pass to anyone who wants to bring a friend to the con to see Jim on Friday/Saturday on in exchange for getting Jim to sign one of my hardcover books, and (a reasonable attempt to get from Jim) the answer to the question "How has Harry explained all those neatly arranged, but heavily used XXX romance novels in his lab to Molly, and does she believe his explanation?"
So I have my prop staff for the Con *is excited* I'm a bit worried about bringing it in, but according to the weapons policy wood props are fine.
i've got my costume about finished. need to get some new laces and redye my hair. i CANNOT wait! yup i'm giggly and bouncy. very unusual. i hope you're happy priscellie! *shakes fist*
And this is why the PG snark-theater is ALWAYS worth it. ;D
Goddess I want to go so bad! I'm not even that far away but I have no one to stay with once I get up there. Probably would not be a great idea to be a single girl wandering around New York after the Con closes.
Anyone know anyone who needs a roomie for the weekend?
Seri, where are you coming in from? Everyone Shecky's checked with already has their couches occupied, but maybe we can get you some simple directions that you'd be comfortable with. (You do realize that the Dinner With Him was by ticket purchase only, and those are pretty much sold out.)
no pretty much about it from what i thought dear. i could be wrong. i'm only able to go because i'm crashing on a friend's couch. and i think star was going to check with you to see if you wanted to share a cab over to the dinner after the con. shoot me a pm if you're interested.

Closer to 12 minutes, I'd say. 7 if you're fast like a freak like me. :D
Nix the "pretty much." The tickets are absolutely sold out.
Nix the "pretty much." The tickets are absolutely sold out.
"Pretty much" as in "yeah, he's pretty much ******" and the like. ;)
What are the chances of someone being able to meet me at GCT on Friday to grab stuff that is needed for the dinner?
I CAN HAZ BLACKSTAFF. It arrived today.
I CAN HAZ BLACKSTAFF. It arrived today.
Ware the dwarf with the staff. Though I don't see it replacing the inflatable purple hammers that he and PG keep bragging about.
Those are not the hammers.Lmfao!
Those are not the hammers.

I'm debating whether to take both my cameras or not. The Canon point and shoot goes everywhere with me, but the Nikon D40 can take much better pictures.

Also, any suggestions on getting from Grand Central to Javits?

If you decide to take a bus, just take the M42. I don't think you would have to wait too long for it. Just don't take the M104, since that will turn onto 8th avenue and won't take you all the way down to the Javitz Center.
Of course, if you're in good health, and you like to walk, it's not a horribly long walk either. I've walked it many times when I had to go pick something up from the FedEx building which is down the same street. :)

Cab it is.
Just be careful - only a yellow cab, unless you've called ahead of time for a particular car service. Gypsy cabs are a real gamble in NYC.Oh yeah. I'm extremely paranoid about stuff like that.

Can't find a map/floorplan of the panel rooms. Anyone have a line on that?Looks like http://www.javitscenter.com/Floor.aspx (http://www.javitscenter.com/Floor.aspx) should work.
Looks like http://www.javitscenter.com/Floor.aspx (http://www.javitscenter.com/Floor.aspx) should work.
Click on 1A hall, and it brings up a layout, then beside that it has two links for 2 different floor plans, although it looks like 1A15 is the same on both. Dimensions for the room look like it's relatively small.
*boggles* 1A15 is TINY. Occupancy of 100? Better line up early.I'm gonna put it down to terrible planning and not knowing the kind of following some of the authors have. I could be wrong, but that's what I choose to believe. I also think the same for the fact that it's at the same time as the LOTR concert, and a lot of people will have bought their tickets before the schedule was done.
Tweaked, based on new info from Jim! The Epic Fantasy panel now seems to be an hour and a half, instead of just one hour, and we have confirmed location info for the two signings.
Jim, Thomas Sneigoski, and Brandon Sanderson. This is going to be a great weekend. And Seanan McGuire. If you haven't read her books, you should. Though I'm sad the zombie panel she's on is at the same time as the dinner.

Tiny but Fierce!
(Just had to say this).
I'm taking the train to get in around 1. Soon as I'm checked in at the hotel, I fully expect to camp out for a spot on Friday. No chances taken!
My meager hotel finding skills got me a room in Times Square. No matter what, I'm expecting quite a hoof unless I break down and flail like a tourist for a cab, heh.
Kingston, NY -- two hours north by train! ;D
Actually not bad. 10-15 minute walk from there. And tourists are far from the only ones who flail for a cab - that mass of humanity REQUIRES you to make yourself very visible just for the cabbies to notice you. I fling an arm out at 45 degrees, hand splayed and bellow, "TAXI!" at the top of my lungs when I see one with its available-for-service light on. Honestly, you might even want to flap a handkerchief around; I've seen that work well. Anything big and visible works as long as the cabbie can see that your face is pointed at them, to tell the truth.
Kingston, NY -- two hours north by train! ;D
I'm coming from central Connecticut.Hah...I had that exact same thought.
If that's not an argument for lightsaber ownership, I just don't know what is. ;D
I'm very curious if you all don't mind answering, where is everyone coming from? I live in NJ, so I jumped at the chance to meet JIm near to home. I'm new to all this and it's really interesting and exciting to see all of your chat about JIm and past events.I'm coming from southern CT, bout an hour and a half by train.
If that's not an argument for lightsaber ownership, I just don't know what is. ;D

Pictsburg, Pennsyltucky. About 8 hours by train, but that's why God made ebooks and beef jerky.
If that's not an argument for lightsaber ownership, I just don't know what is. ;DAnd now I'm wondering if a bright green lightsaber keychain would work. I have 3 of those. ;D
I am SO excited for this. LESS THAN A DAY. AAAHH!!!
This much energy is not going to be good for my monologue midterm today. Whoo boy.
Aye, I'm in midst of preparations for the raid on Shecktus Tor. Chez Priscellie FTW.
he'll be girding loins
How does one gird loins?
Take your loins and gird them. Simple.
Good news - the last little pieces for the costume are now taken care of and will be arriving at the Casa de Shecky before noon tomorrow. And that tops off the news that my student loan is OFFICIALLY PAID OFF. "Gonna be a good day, Tater."
The same week Germany finally finished paying off reparations for World War I (http://news.yahoo.com/s/time/20101004/wl_time/08599202314000)?
Coincidence? I think nicht.

Fraulein Sheckenhienen?
I hope you have enough catnip to take care of the guardbeasts.
Take your loins and gird them. Simple.
I have four of my own said guardbeasts. One of which is ginormous (Maine Coon), and another which is schizo. I think I might be able to handle it. :D
NYCC is ready for Jim!
... or so they believe...What about room for Brandon Sanderson's fans?
I would believe they're ready if they had put together about EIGHT of those itsy-bitsy panel rooms and combined them into one big 'un for the Friday night panel.
What about room for Brandon Sanderson's fans?
What about room for Brandon Sanderson's fans?
Well, considering a lot of us Jim-fans are also Brandon Sanderson fans... But yeah. The space is going to be cramped. All I know is I'm not holding Shecky on my lap. I don't need face-full of dwarf. :D
... or so they believe...

But, but, why would one want to put a belt or something on their loins? :P
It also referred to snugging up securing certain swingly bits that would react with sensitivity to the application of swords, spears, and the like. Making them a more compact target increases the likelyhood of the owner retaining his aquaintence with them.
Wow, they should talk to someone at DragonCon about exactly how many rabid Jim Butcher fans are out there! Room for 100 people?!? They have got to be kidding. 500-1000 would be more like it, I would imagine.
Don't know if you are joking or not but to gird your loins is to tie up/secure your loose garment (like a long tunic's lower ends) and secure the loose ends around your legs and or waist to allow greater freedom of movement in preparation for something strenuous like hard work or battle.

Less than 11 hours till I find myself in NYC! :)
Well, D*C is much larger than NYCC, so you'd expect the crowd to be proportionally sized. But that room just ain't enough in either case.
Hell, the fan dinner alone would fill most of the room. :D
I brought it to Anne Sowards' attention a few days ago. She's not sure if anything can be done, but she's trying anyway.
How do you know that's where you'll find yourself? Is it because you know that's where you lost yourself?
:D

As always, fine work.
Less than 11 hours till I find myself in NYC! :)
I has a map with an "X" marking the spot where I'll find me. I think. Oh wait...
Always in the last place you look, huh Shecky? :D
In 24 hours I will be on a train. Probably glaring at the "Out of service" sign on the snack car or the lavoratory, perhaps just pondering where to throw this or that Irritating Fellow Passenger out. Tunnel, or embankment?
Bridges, don't forget bridges!
You sir, are correct! Rivers=bridges=Chiana is a little slow on the uptake! ;D
You don't need a river to have a bridge you know...there are also canyons and ravines ;D
Details details. I may have to go there and make one of my own.
I HAVE THE MAPS. I HAVE THEM ALL, AND THEY ARE MINE. THEY ARE BIG AND THEY ARE PRETTY. ALSO VERY HEAVY. Definitely going to have to stash them at the Penguin booth.
Yes. Your Soul is hidden in... *checks* Founderport.
Any reason you took the picture in a public restroom?
Although the maps are indeed AWESOME!
That was far less funny than I was hoping it would be.
Didn't you see the picture? Everything is backwards. They do their work in the bathrooms and go wee-wee at their desks.
My friends/fellow forum dwellers/fellow fans going to NYCC:
While I am sighing loudly with jealousy (and yes, tinged with a well known color in the wavelength of 565nm) at your good fortune &/or planning, I sincerely do wish you all a great, great time.
As a matter of fact, have an extra-awesome time.
Take pictures, record stuff, (and PLEASE post it all somewhere!) laugh yourselves hoarse, enjoy the dinner and bask in the Jimness.
So are you saying that Pris lives.
>.>
<.<
>.>
In Bizzaro world?
I now have ALL THE MAPS and ALL THE GARRETTS.
"All your Garretts are belong to Prisce?"
Do you have the McGarrett?
...Do I get a say in this?
...Do I get a say in this?
No.
there better be pictures and video. Dammit I want to feel like I was there!

Old paper I have plenty of, my dorm smells worse than a basement and is gamer funk anything like "unwashed college kid"
Okay, can someone tell me when and where Jim is autographing on Saturday. I'm reading different things on here and the NYCC website. The autograph alley one keeps changing tables, but the time looks to be consistent. The Penguin booth signing I think won't be changing.
Jim will sign most anything, but the limit is three per person per trip. He wants to get everybody, so after the first three, you go to the back of the line. He has two signings tomorrow: the first is from 12:00-1:00 at the Penguin Booth (2414), and the second is the official con signing from 4:00 to 6:00. However, the official con signing is being ticketed, and IIRC, there will only be 100 tickets. Those are handed out at the Penguin booth (2414) at 2:00—and it's first come, first serve.
Does that mean the times have changed again? Cause last I looked, although that was yesterday, the con signing was the earlier one.
I got video of most of Jim's panel! My camera only holds about 50 minutes, and the panel went a little over an hour. I got audio of the rest, though. I'll try to post it all over the next week.Yay :D I look forward to that thanks for recording it.
Uh-yup. I lied. Are you sure about the table? Master chart on the NYCC site says table 16; it's changed about 3 times since the thing was put up originally.
Jim is at the official con signing form 12:00-1:00 at table A4. The Penguin signing is from 4-6 at booth 2414, and is ticketed. 100 tickets will be available starting at 2:00. First come first serve.
TICKET FORSALE for tonights dinner with the creator himself.
I can't go :( so if you want to buy the ticket please email me or message me
The flyer I picked up at the Penguin booth said A4, that's what I was going on. But you know cons, everything is subject to change until five minutes after it ends.Hi,
http://www.petervbrett.com/2010/10/08/slight-disagreement/ (http://www.petervbrett.com/2010/10/08/slight-disagreement/)Unless there was someone else there as Maeve, that is her.
This is one EPIC panel!

Hi,
I was wondering if Jim will be appearing at the con on Sunday?
Thanks
Help! I was at the New York Comic Con Jim Butcher signing earlier today when he signed books with the Burger King crown on. I took photos of that signing, among others, but they got accidentally erased -- long story. If anyone has a photo of King Jim, I would really appreciate it if you can share it with me. I wanted to frame the Alera map poster with photos from the Con. Please, please, please...I beg of you to take pity on me.
IMPORTANT-TYPE ANNOUNCEMENT OF IMPORTANTNESS
No scheduled appearances, no showing up at con tomorrow. Sorry.
IMPORTANT-TYPE ANNOUNCEMENT OF IMPORTANTNESS
At the party, Jim read the first four chapters of Ghost Story, and a number of folks filmed it. I'm currently checking with Jenn Jackson about the legalities of folks posting it online. If it's allowed (which I'm confident it will be, but best to make sure), I'd like to use it as promotional material to lead up to Side Jobs, with one chapter posted per week. Please don't post it on your own yet! It'll spoil the suspense.
Also, there is to be absolutely NO DISCUSSION of material that hasn't been made public to everyone! It's disrespectful to your fellow fans.
If you were one of the videoers, PM me and let me know, so we can conspire. :D
Thank you for breaking the hearts and minds of all the people who weren't able to go...
Can anyone post the Dresden Drink Menu? It was a great addition to the night.
Thank you for breaking the hearts and minds of all the people who weren't able to go...
I kept one, I'll take a pic and post it after I get a new memory card for my camera this evening—the one I had got smashed in transit to Virginia.
Yikes! You didn't lose the photos from the con, did you?
PHEW. That photo of Shecky and PG is a national treasure. I would have to proclaim a Butcherverse Day of Mourning if it had been destroyed. Also Gilly rolling her eyes at Matt's overtures. :D
What I'm hoping for is a vid shot of the Pre-Squeee Quiver that Prisc did as her sentence was pronounced and the hood came off. Total stillness to Absolute Squee in .3 seconds. Impressive.
I'm getting my pics labeled and will be linking soon. And I got an awesome reaction shot just after the hood came off. ;D

I went to NYCC this year. I enjoyed it but they had way too many people there. I did get to meet Jim and Anne at the first signing. They really under estimated the amount of fans that would show up for him. I had him sign my nook cover and my wife had him sign her nook. We REALLY wanted to go to the dinner but we came to see the LOTR movie, which I highly recommend.
I've been lurking on these boards for a long time and decided to start speaking up.
Priscellie, I really wanted a chance to buy one of your maps, any chance they will be for sale at another event or anywhere else?
I remember you from the signing! I was selling my maps then, but it wasn't terribly obvious, as Lou Ferigno was taking up two feet of Jim's table, so I didn't have any place to put them.
I will be selling maps online, hopefully within the next ten days. Gotta figure out how to set up an online store for it! Fred gave me some tips, but I haven't been able to act on them yet, as all of my focus was going to the dinner. Let the next project begin!
That was Ellie!?
My pics from the weekend. Pics of the spoils to be added tomorrow.Awesome, you got a pic of the Seeker costumes. Rob pointed 'em out to me, but too many people were in the way so I saw only the back of one of the girls.

Ack. The pick of Prisc in the Jayne Cobb hat just reminded me that I forgot to check out the Browncoat's table.Rob and I stopped by on Sunday. Didn't even make it to that part of the room Sat. I forgot what else I was possibly gonna say.
*Head, desk, rinse, repeat.*
Hope I didn't get their cold! I'm sore-throated and sniffly this morning.
Kittenbot has come down with an epizootic of some sort or the other, poor thing. We're likely going to have to start a "what plague did you bring home from NYCC?" thread.
So we'll need to keep a tally of which people have dreams about coming to visit the scarey walking dude, or the nice old lady in a cornfield in Nebraska. Or, being us, they could dream about coming to visit me in one place, or Noey Bean or Blaze or one of the Nice People. We'll call the flu "Captain Snarks"I should not have been drinking water when I read that. No accident, but close.
Ack. The pick of Prisc in the Jayne Cobb hat just reminded me that I forgot to check out the Browncoat's table. Were they showing their movie, Browncoat: Redemption at ComiCon?
*Head, desk, rinse, repeat.*
Hey all! Officially de-lurking :) Emy here, I met a lot of you at the dinner, and had such a great time I decided to brave the forums XD So far no plague yet, but I will keep a watch out. *wanders off to explore the boards some more*
You were at the fan dinner? Which one were you? I met so many neat people and promptly did the old-and-tired thing by forgetting names. That goes for everyone there who isn't already one of usaddictedregulars - let us know who was who!
I was the Jedi...and at the fan dinner I was wearing the blue Star Wars shirt :)

ETA: Paynesgrey wins :)
heh. forgotten names? i don't remember who most of the people from the dinner were, and i'm fairly sure no one remembers my real name. except star. i made her tell everyone for me since i couldn't so well. but then again PG got a flash of my id, so he probably even knows my birthday. (no presents old man!) and besides.. all day sunday everyone kept calling me molly. either bc they didn't know my name or didn't care.
i'm fairly sure no one remembers my real name.
i'm fairly sure no one remembers my real name.Heh I remember, mostly because it's in my phone now...but yeah lol!
You! You are awesome! Glad to put a username with a face. Welcome to the forum!Aww thank you! However I will never be able to even come close to your level of awesomeness :)
Heh. People here who know my real name AND know me in real life still call me "Shecky". :D
My god, I had to ask some of the trivia participants their names three or four times. I felt like an idiot. But my synapses were way past overloaded at that stage, so hopefully they'll understand. :D
'Cellie, everyone understands. Even Industrious Little Gnomes reach capacity now and then. That's why we got you the cake, to thank you for ALL your gnoming!
ALL HAIL PRISCELLIE!
Heh. People here who know my real name AND know me in real life still call me "Shecky". :D
That's because it's your name! Calling you "Richard" would be wrong.

Finally got a good look at your pics. AWESOME! And the ones you got of Priscellie at the cake unveiling? Perfection!
What was on the cake?
Kitten got a really awesome pic of the cake, too.
I had my camera up, ready, and waiting for the hood to come off to get that pic.
I am rather proud...the back of my head features prominently in most of the pictures posted lol!
Any chance of the trivia questions being posted?
I got your name, Kitten! You have the same as my niece, Kyra.
Star! I was looking for you to say hi! If only I'd realized I sat next to you!
I got your name, Kitten! You have the same as my niece, Kyra.Shecky had been talking to me and my b/f quite a bit and didn't realize until we were standing at the bar after most everyone had left and OE had told him. :D Is okay, I tend to be pretty quiet and hang back a lot.

Well, once we got to the dinner, I didn't have the strap of my bag across me, so you couldn't see the card with my star, which wasn't entirely obvious to begin with. And most of the pics I've posted before, I had my hair loose. At the dinner it was braided cause it was too frikkin hot otherwise.

The majority of these drinks were conceived of by Matt, our own Esperacchius and winner of the Butcherverse cosplay contest! Thank you, Matt!
So you mean the pic of all the mods with Ban Hammers was a lie :'(
Heh. Do you know you quiver when inhaling to Squeee?
At least the cake wasn't.Yes it was, the most elaborate lie in the world. At least it is now, because you can't have your cake and nom on it too ;)
*laughs* WONDERFUL! Are Matt and Shecky exchanging a high-five?
I'm also a lurker de-lurking, as promised (and said a few pages ago)! I'm Ben, the fellow with the entirely visible yellow vest (or the spider on my head, from the Friday panel). You can see me in lots of pictures lurking around next to Jim, or accidentally pretending to be a judge in the cosplay contest. Whee!Oh! You're the one in the pic up there in the background?
~Duk
Uploading my pics to FB now, and setting them to "Everyone," so hopefully everyone from here can see 'em. If not, I'll upload them again to Photobucket.
Also, I have video of CAKE OR DEATH!!!! Will be working on getting that one up today or tomorrow.
So many awesome pics! Good grief, I didn't realize Matt was that tall. Who needs casting threads? We had forumers the whole time!
Pris, Please refresh this old man's memory who were you again?
This CRS is getting real bad!

We made a cake with her map of Alera on it happen to her as thanks for all her insane hard work.
The rich, creamy taste of treachery and deceit.
Red velvet, actually.
...I totally should've brought my little jade Foo Dog as decor. Ah well! Garrett and I were already weighed down with more than enough stuff. We didn't need one more thing. :D
From Magnolia!
Amy's Bread, actually. Awesome little bakery on 9th between 46th and 47th. Breads AND sweet stuff - they do it all and do it well.
And no, I wasn't paid to say that. :D

The 40 lb box of posters, a box of mail tubes, your backpack + fireman's jacket, my cloak-wrapped framed Alera map, a giant rolled up poster from the TV series, and a giant bag of books wasn't enough!
Are you sure? Did they put a chip in you?
Ok, my pictures are on Photobucket (and tagged on FB, if I'm friended to you!) at this link:
"25,000 Drunken Ecuadorians." - on why it took so damn long to leave the con Saturday night after a soccer game let out next to our parking garage.
You did it! Or, as your husband said, "I blame the Ecuadorians." I thought I was gonna blow an O-ring.

I think we should have gotten her a bigger cake.
If we go any bigger, we might as well get a life-sized 'Celliecake. :D
At first it was 4, but then I think Priscellie read it as a 9 when I was walking the runway, and it's been different ever since. Hey, I didn't even have a speaking part. One of them extras, right? *snorfles*Yeah, Priscellie read 9.
Could you do one of those enormous novelty cakes and have the Eleventh Doctor pop out of it? Because bow ties are cool.

What about Matt Bomer dressed as The Doctor who then tells her to look up, then down, and he's on a horse with tickets to that thing she loves?:D Awesomesauce.

Not a bad idea, but giving her all three would be better. That way they could have 8 hour shifts, have plenty of time to rest before going back on duty as her dedicated servants.
While on a horse, with tickets to the thing you like?
I saw you, Knnn, but didn't get a chance to say hi! You cruised by the D&D tables while I was goblin whacking, and I saw the noose around your neck. My table thought I was quite odd when I said, "Nicodemus!" out of nowhere! :D
Here are a few of my pics. Unfortunately, I couldn't make it to the dinner.

Butters accepts his destiny, while Nicodemus looks on with approval.
I'll pull a Jim here: "That's awesome, but... why? WHY?!?!" (His reaction to "Warden" Butters was somewhere along those lines)
It was interesting because the visible part of the costume basically consisted of ordinary gray and black clothes and a noose, making it hard for people to realize I was actually in costume. I got quite a few amusing double-takes from people who finally realized what I had around my neck.
I didn't meet anyone not on the forum who actually recognized me as Nicodemus. I mainly got comments in the form of "Don't kill yourself. Spiderman 4 will be coming out soon."
We really need to get you out of that gutter you call home, man. It's starting to show.

Completely understandable.
However, while waiting for February, there IS a clip of the "Butcherverse Runway" Cosplay Contest from the fan dinner. Would have been longer had I realized at the beginning, "oh, I should get all of this on video" instead of realizing it halfway through.

Completely understandable. When I get home, I'll add it to the NYCC thread I put together. And also, if there's anything I missed to put in it, lemme know and I'll update it.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, folks, but Jim doesn't want me to post the video of the reading until Februaryish, when the text sample chapters go up for Ghost Story. He was reading from the pre-beta draft, and he doesn't know what's going to change yet. He doesn't want a conflicting version of the text in the public eye.
I have no doubt that some of you will manage to finagle copies from other attendees, but out of respect for Jim's wishes, I ask you not to re-post it in any public place, like YouTube, BitTorrent, your blog, your favourite LJ community, etc. And there is to be absolutely no discussion of the material he read on the forum. Posting of spoilers from the reading, however mundane, is forbidden.

Completely understandable and I hope that everyone will respect Jim's (awesomeness) wishes!
One would hope. Yet the boards being what they are, there are already a goodly number of people trying to get their hands on it.
Hell, if I hadn't been there, I would've been one of them. And I've read the chapters!
A reading by Jim is always a pleasure, even if you've already read the material. He always injects so much life into the reading, and I hear the characters say things in a way I hadn't "heard" during my initial reading.
Is there any online evidence of Jim speaking with Bob the Skull's voice? I hear that it is very good.
I don't think so. When I asked Jim if he would be willing to read a snippet of Bob at the dinner, he said, "Potentially." Didn't happen. Ah well.Ohh...I'm just happy someone remembered to ask, cause I'd meant to and completely forgot until after I got home.

Yup. I'm thrilled to be able to release the video to the fans in Februaryish! It'll be a treat.
Yup. I'm thrilled to be able to release the video to the fans in Februaryish! It'll be a treat.Oh that's good :D I was thinking that since it was prebeta and all, that only the normal textversion sample chapters would be posted in february, this makes it better I was afraid I was never going to see those videos.

Also, the whole reading too quite a while, so it would be a simply enormous file that would most likely be too big to be emailed easily, even if broken down into several parts.
DEFINITELY too big. Mine was 2.55 gigs. 52 minutes of HD video'll do that. The sad part was that my Flip didn't get all that great of a picture. :*(
DON'T solicit or provide bootleg audio or video through this forum of Jim's Ghost Story Pre-Read at the Fan Dinner.
Jim was nice enough to bend some rules and share some Beta with us at the dinner. I'm sure that we all wish we could share nicely with our fellow fans, but Jim has specifically asked us not to, at least until the sample chapters are released for the preview. He did us a good turn, let's not repay him by doing him a bad one. I know we all want to share and be shared with, but we must respect the wishes of the Founder of The Feast, so please do not make Jim regret what he did for us.
So many lurkers had been de-cloaked in this thread.
Sorry for speaking out of turn and pardon my ignorance ...
But how exactly does one shed the "lurker" status?
Huh? So I just hit the magic number. (Bell ringing!!!!)
See? Now I am blushing. Thanks guys. *HUGS*
I just do what I can for folks. I mean, if everyone on the planet just took a little time to do a little something nice for each other... think of the possibilities!
Nah, not everyone's sick. I'm not. ;D
You're not sick yet ;)My b/f's been sick since Wed or Thurs last week. I might possibly get sick once he gets better, but so far that hasn't happened.
haha i did a little something nice for everyone. i shared. :) i are so proud of my sharing. granted everyone ELSE might not be so happy with my sharing... but still. ;D
Wow, I'm bummed that I missed out on this! I've never been to NYCC, but it looks like this would have been worth the trip! Any chance y'all may organize an event like this in the future?
If Jim's back at NYCC, chances are good.
That's a big "if." There's no guarantee if Jim will be back next year! I'm working on him, though. :D
I figured as much. Here's hoping! By the way, your Maeve costume was totally sweet!
Maine and Sweden aren't that far apart. There's just an ocean and Norway and stuff.Yes, instead, I am reaaaaaaaally far, far away, and not many people here read DF, so chances of JB coming here are near to zero. (Unless he come as a tourist. And we have a beautiful country to welcome him. So it is possible)
I am currently plotting for the next con to cosplay Kitai...just working out the logistics of the hair...I am not quite dedicated enough to shave my hair into a mohawk to cosplay lol XD
Isn't Kitai topless?
Not for most of the series. As a whelp, she wears a short tunic, and she wears Aleran-style clothing from the point she arrives in Alera Imperia onwards. She's only topless for the two years or so between FoC and AF. And whenever she and Tavi have a few moments to themselves. :D
Scellie, can I just paypal you my donation?
Yup, our JB Forum people are good sorts. The bartender at the Rogue commented on how nice everyone was, even.
Priscellie, I don't know much about the fund. Can I donate by credit card from South America?
Indeed she should have.
You gave her my cupcake.
Sorry, I just couldn't resist. Actually, I intentionally avoided the cupcakes because of all the con food, plus the good feastage you provided us with. I'm stil having dreams about those burgers at Junior's.... happy, happy dreams.

Indeed indeed...do asides work in forums?

It's Manhattan, Shecky. Real estate is pricey. Unconventional floorplans are to be expected.

Excuses. I shall now interrogate your roommate.

No. I have the Nutella and the bulletproof Lexite dome. That's not kosher by Genevan standards, but I don't care.
Oh gods curse you all I just spit soda out my nose... Mtn Dew burns dangit.
Anyway old spice guy, you are now obsolete and have been outdone by the great VonDoom!

I don't think they even have a word for how awesome this thread has become. We're going to have to ask Chuck Norris to invent a word just to describe the awesomeness.Norris-tastic?

Pfft. Ehren has a lair within the shark that is so cool that Batman is now consumed with jealousy, and is now attempting entry by confusing the guard-shark by interpretive lightsaber dancing in order to fool them all into thinking he has furies, but Batman is no Tavi, sir. No Tavi! Therefore, Ehren wins.
Whether or not Ehren still required pants for this plan is up to your individual opinions.
And who built that lightsaber, huh? Ehren, that's who, with Sextus' dead metal hand and fueled with MacGuyver's tears!
The prosecution wins! Appeal? We win again!
I know there were some cameras running, just don't remember who had them. We'll see if we can find out Dafixershideout.
I don't mean to put the actual topic of the post back on track or anything weird like that but does anyone know if anyone recorded or podcasted the Epic Fantasy Panel from the con? Thanks.Check out the New York CC thread under story of us. There should be a link to the video there. It might be near the bottom of the first post. At least I'm pretty sure I included it.
And really great and funny bunch of posts, the Cthulu selling old spice had me laughing for hours.
Peace

So... is Myrrdn going as pantsless Ehren? Because I think that would be an excellent costume choice. Yes indeed. :P
Pantsless Ehren and topless Kitai. The mostaccuratebestest Alera cosplays ever.

Suduvu.com has a video. Pretty decent quality, too. Their other vids from the con are interesting as well.

Yup, the quality on the Suvudu video looks much higher than mine. And my camera ran out ten minutes to the end. I suppose it would be fun to upload my video so folks could hear Garrett and my snarky comments from the peanut gallery, but it doesn't rate terribly high on my priority list. :D
From what I hear, though, our peanut gallery was nothing compared to Shecky and PG—even though there were 3 people between them. :D

I have no idea what you could possibly be referring to. Other than simultaneously diagnosing an impressive case of aereum coleus.
