DFRPG / Earth magic responsible for weapons skill?
« on: May 17, 2019, 04:32:38 PM »
So in Paranet Papers, it says that Morgan's earth magic is partially responsible for his sword skill, but I'm not sure how to represent that mechanically.

Should it be something like a stunt that allows him to use swords with discipline or conviction?

Something that adds his refinement bonuses for earth magic onto his weapons skill?

Maybe something like a "channeling" version of Easy Evocations, where for 1 refresh he can make earth evocation attacks without stress, only instead of the weapons value being the evocation strength, it's the weapons value of the sword?

Or something else entirely?

DFRPG / Why are powers so much stronger than stunts?
« on: May 16, 2019, 08:36:48 PM »
I was looking at endurance-based stunts vs powers, and it's just ridiculous. By spending 2 refresh on Inhuman Toughness, you get armor:1 against anything physical, plus two additional stress boxes--which probably means you can absorb an extra 9-11 shifts of damage.

But if you spend that same 2 refresh on stunts to get similar abilities, you'd want stunts like Tough Stuff, which gives you armor:1 against some things but not others, and No Pain No Gain, which gets you an extra mild physical consequence--which means you can absorb an extra 2 shifts of damage, plus you can have the consequence compelled against you and you have to wait a scene for it to clear.

This seems like a huge disparity.

DF Spoilers / Motivation for fixing Little Chicago?
« on: May 11, 2019, 11:48:24 PM »
There have been a lot of debates and theories about who fixed Little Chicago, but I haven't seen any debate about why they did it--everyone seems to assume that the point is to save Harry.

But what if it isn't? What if, instead, they fixed it because they needed to use it? We have WoJ that Harry is first-rate when it comes to making magical artifacts, even compared to wizards with far more experience. Furthermore, Little Chicago took an enormous amount of time to put together, as well as a fair amount of resources. If someone needed to use something like it just once, as opposed to on a regular basis, it would make more sense to fix Harry's and just use that, rather than expend the time and effort to build their own.

DFRPG / Easy evocations cost?
« on: April 12, 2019, 05:49:39 PM »
How much refresh do people think it should cost to buy a power that allows you to use the Nevernever's "easy evocations" ability on Earth? Should there be an upgrade available to let you use normal-strength spellcasting without stress as well (this should probably be limited to evocations that are weaker than your conviction+refinement)? If so, how much should that cost? Should it be split into two upgrades, one for evocations weaker than just your conviction, and one for evocations at your conviction+refinement?

DFRPG / Hellfire as two powers
« on: April 10, 2019, 03:57:16 PM »
I was reading a thread in the spoiler post section (https://www.paranetonline.com/index.php/topic,52786.0.html) and it inspired the idea that Hellfire could actually be two powers: one burning through your soul like soulfire, and one being drawn from Hell itself, like drawing from a place of power. I was wondering how people would write those two powers up.

Also, how would you write up a power that lets you do Michael's faith stuff as a complement for soulfire?

DF Spoilers / Exposure to Magic?
« on: April 03, 2019, 01:55:32 AM »
So I've been trying to figure out how magic is passed down, because if it's only passed down from mother to child, then Harry shouldn't have magic, and I think I've come up with something:

There are two parts to inheriting the ability to use magic: genetics and exposure to magic in the womb.

You can get the genetic component from either parent.

You also need to be exposed to some degree of magic while in the womb. This is significantly easier if your mother is a magic user, because there is always some magic circulating through magic users even when they're not casting spells (based on the fact that wizards still hex things even when not using magic).

It's significantly harder to be sufficiently exposed to magic if your mother is not a magic user, because it requires that your mother be around multiple fairly powerful magic workings while pregnant with you. This explains why magic appears to normally be inherited from the mother, especially with minor practitioners.

This also explains why Molly inherited magic from Charity but none of her other siblings did: Charity wasn't practicing magic while pregnant with her, but she hadn't stopped long enough for magic to stop circulating through her yet. (After all, if it were just genetic, then Charity abandoning magic would have no effect).

It also explains Margaret--her mom wasn't magic, but was hanging around Ebenezer (since she was married to him).

In addition, it explains both why Maggie might have magic and why it would be influenced by her mother's vampirism--she inherited strong magical genetics from Harry, and was exposed to rampire energies rather than mortal magic while in the womb.

DFRPG / Harry's pain-blocking stunt
« on: April 02, 2019, 05:30:20 PM »
How would you write up a stunt to reflect the pain-blocking trick Lash taught Harry in Dead Beat? Would it clear a consequence? Prevent aspects associated with consequences from being invoked against him? Give him armor against pain? Temporary extra physical stress boxes?

I'm not sure how to model it rules-wise.

Would Harry have called Lasciel's coin to keep her (or Michael) safe?

DF Spoilers / If the Denarians are trapped in Demonreach...
« on: March 16, 2019, 05:40:58 PM »
...would the KotC try to break them out? I've heard a theory that the way to trap the Coins in Demonreach is to trap their bearers with them, thus subverting the "meant to be in circulation" issue--they are in circulation, it's just that their hosts can't do anything. The problem with this is that a coinbearer trapped in stasis on Demonreach couldn't repent (I don't think), so it seems like something the Knights would have a problem with.

DFRPG / Rewriting Lawbreaker Powers
« on: March 12, 2019, 08:44:54 PM »
So, I don't really like the Lawbreaker power because I feel like it discourages people (or at least discourages me) from playing a character like Harry or Molly, who broke a Law once but is trying to reform. If you're not breaking whatever Law a bunch in game, then it's just wasted refresh. I was thinking about just treating breaking the Laws like an extreme consequence, but then I thought that it might work better if I expanded the Lawbreaker power to give bonuses to things that weren't just breaking the Laws. For example, Lawbreaker (1st) would give a bonus to all violent magic, not just First Law violations. Do you think that that would work, or are there problems with it that I haven't thought of?

DFRPG / Mirror Magic (sponsored magic)
« on: February 23, 2019, 08:12:47 PM »
What do people think of this?

Mirror Magic (-4)
Description: You have found a way to draw magic from your own reflection. To use this power, you must have a specific mirror that you are magically linked to. (If your mirror is broken/sealed away, you lose access to this power. However, you do not have to have your mirror with you in order to use it, except where explicitly stated).
Sponsor: Your own reflection.
Agenda: Encourages deception (both deceiving others and self-deception), not looking past the surface, and being concerned more about appearances than reality.
Evocation: Mirror magic allows the use of the spirit element.
Thaumaturgy: This magic allows the use of magic for illusions and psychomancy.
Evothaum: Yes.
Extra benefits: Once per scene, you can use your action for the round to focus on your connection to your mirror to clear two stress boxes (if you do so, any attack against you that round is treated as an ambush). In addition, in a thaumaturgy spell, you can incorporate your mirror in order to double the power of your spell (the control roll(s) for this power is considered to be the same as for the power you called up the normal way). However, if the mirror breaks, every spell that you have cast using mirror magic is broken and you automatically suffer a mental attack equal to double your conviction plus the number of spells you've used your mirror in (to double power) for the last year and a day. You are not protected from this attack by thresholds, distance, mental armor, or any of your magic (other people's magic, however, may protect you). You defend against this attack with discipline.

I also have suggestions for different levels of consequences that this power might inflict, if anyone is interested.

DF Spoilers / Proven Guilty WAG: Rashid's behind it!
« on: February 20, 2019, 02:22:30 AM »
So, I've come up with a theory for why Mab would want to kidnap Molly, revolving around Rashid's power of making cryptic statements about the future.

The idea is that Rashid (at two different times) makes statements to Mab indicating that the Winter Lady will be/is infected by Nemesis, and that Molly will/could be the Winter Lady.

Mab interprets this to mean that Nemesis is plotting to kill her daughter and replace her with Molly as their pawn, and promptly sends the Fetches to hunt down/kidnap Molly (either because she can't order them to kill her directly or because she wants to find out if Molly knows anything about Nemesis' plans and make her tell her).

However, Rashid has already arranged for the horror movie convention to occur, complete with Madrigal Raith to make sure it's extra tasty, and the Fetches get distracted long enough for Harry to get thoroughly involved.

The Fetches get Molly eventually, and Mab realizes that it is unlikely (Mab says in Cold Days that it's hard/impossible to be completely sure) that Molly is not Infected (yet). Furthermore, she's been keeping tabs on Harry since he got involved, and realizes that Maeve is acting very suspiciously.

She doesn't want to accept it, of course, but between this and the fact that Rashid helped Harry protect Molly, she is forced to acknowledge that Maeve is Infected.

The book ends with Mab realizing a clear and present danger to her court and Harry gaining an apprentice who can compensate for his weaknesses and force him to improve them--just as Rashid planned!

What do people think?

DF Spoilers / Did Michael lie?
« on: February 15, 2019, 01:33:27 AM »
In Proven Guilty, Michael says that Harry can get rid of Lasciel's shadow by giving up his power. Then, when Harry turns him down, Michael says that he has faith that Harry will find another way to be rid of Lasciel's shadow. However, in Small Favor Michael claims that there is no way to be rid of a shadow of the Fallen, and uses this as a justification for believing that Harry set up a little girl to be tortured.

Am I misremembering/misunderstanding, or is this an outright lie about a major issue by the series' resident paladin?

DF Spoilers / WAG: why Nicodemus wanted the knife
« on: February 15, 2019, 01:27:26 AM »
So, I was reading an old thread about what would happen if you sacrificed a denarian on the stone table, and it sparked an idea.

What if the reason Nicodemus wanted the knife from Skin Game was because it can destroy denarian coins, which by WoJ would free the Fallen inside to act?

DFRPG / hellfire/holy water interaction?
« on: February 14, 2019, 05:55:04 AM »
So, what happens if holy water is hit with hellfire? Does the holy water negate the hellfire? Does the hellfire negate the holy water? Do they both cancel out each other?

And how explosive is the reaction? If I have a water bottle of holy water and hit it with hellfire, have I just created an improvised hand grenade for ghosts/spiritual entities?
