DF Spoilers / Re: Harry's possible Denarian form?
« on: April 11, 2022, 02:39:08 AM »
I'm not sure the "James Bond" thing was meant so much for a battle form as what Lasciel would have augmented him into the rest of the time, in social situations and such.

In terms of combat, presumably she would have been trying to build on what he already is, instead of turn a caster into a primarily physical fighter.  So count on supercharging his spells with Hellfire, and otherwise mostly focusing on improving his survivability.  It's not a form, but she probably could have taught him to improve the defensive enchantments on his clothes to something commensurate with Eb's, that gives a sort of force field even over what's not covered. Likely augmenting that with the same protective smoke around him that she was doing with Hannah.

I doubt Harry and Lasciel as a pair would have gone heavy on the shapeshifting - maybe toughened skin around the vitals and arms for fighting anything with claws, and some extra muscle in a pinch. But I'd guess down that path Harry probably still would have preferred in the longer term to do extreme exercise and use the Fallen to accelerate recovery between sessions - basically what he's doing with the Winter Knight path, only primarily for fight-preparedness instead of as strategy to keep the mantle tired.

It would have been an interesting arc, if the story had gone that way, between Lasciel teaching him enough advanced magic and going along with supporting workouts that the decision to pick up the coin seems rewarded, but vastly preferring improvements like the smoke and shapeshifting that push him deeper into dependency. Vs Harry knowing that's her game, and being way more interested in learning new spells that he can then use on his own, and putting on his own muscle even if she's helping.

Slightly off my own topic but do the BC have their own base of power?

One of my favourite theories is that it *was* Tunguska, but  Ebenezar decided to lend a hand to the Stokerlypse.

We may have seen x-iel or at least his host, the Fallen can keep hidden especially well, Harry may have fought him and not even realised he was facing a Denarian, Cowl for example is a likely candidate, he never pressed Cowl hard enough for him to draw on Hellfire in their battles. Cowl however knew Harry possessed Bob, who had the Word, if Justin was a previous host x-iel would know this. It always bothered me that Cowl knew about Bob when only Justin, Elaine and Harry knew this, so Cowl must have found out from Elaine, unless there was another being present all the time. Everyone goes with the Elaine-Kumori theory, but if she was bound to Summer at the time of Grave Peril, it’s unlikely given how we have subsequently seen how Winter binds.

It's possible, but not the only way to explain Cowl knowing Justin had Bob and surmising Harry would have taken the skull after defeating Justin.

We have little to no indication in text how much information Justin was sharing with other Circle conspirators without Harry or Elaine's awareness. It could be something as simple as Cowl knew because he helped Justin purloin the valuable assistant spirit out of Kemmler's lab while convincing the Council it had been destroyed.  That's a particularly credible alternative if Cowl is Simon - everyone pretty much would have believed Bob was destroyed on his report as Senior Councilor and head of the brute squad.

Of course, Cowl could be both Simon AND hosting one of the Denarians everybody thought was still in a Church vault somewhere. A coin would certainly be helpful in faking one's death.

3- I don't know if it's been said how durable the coins are. I don't imagine they're indestructible, so what would happen to the Fallen if the coin were destroyed? Alternatively, if the coins are instead highly durable, what non-conventional uses could they serve? I was thinking a magical bullet of sorts; Harry and his kinetic energy storing and such could release it on the coin, with no need for gunpowder or fancy bullets.

They're supernaturally durable to some extent. There's a WOJ on it somewhere in the archives to the effect that successfully destroying the coin would free the Fallen inside from its material prison, which would be bad. But none of their enemies in 2,000 years who have got hold of a coin dropped by a dead host and mistakenly thought that melting it would be a win have managed to pull it off.

It's unclear whether Lucifer created the coins personally, but WOJ mentioned he chose the 30 'elite of Hell' most likely to stab him in the back to go into them.

Interesting ... I'm not sure if that's the one Jim Sr mentioned his son working on where the magic system causes slow sanity corruption and the magical enforcers are partnered with a mundane who's supposed to put them down when they eventually go dark, or it's something else.

DF Spoilers / Re: Star Born (direct quotes compilation)
« on: March 01, 2022, 09:15:48 PM »
I hadn't connected this before, but it doesn't make much sense that the Winter Lady before Maeve would have died (assuming that's what he means by "not fared so well") last time a starborn was running around, if the cycle is 666 years and Maeve & Sarissa's father being the "famous Austrian composer" dates them as born not likely earlier than the 1600's.

So there pretty much must have been two Winter Ladies under Mab before Maeve got the role.

Merlin might have travelled more widely in the Americas than just the Great Lakes area to set up the prison on the island, and European legends about him just didn't record it. He was clearly a lot more influential and around a lot longer in the DV than just the "advisor to King Arthur" that the real world legends have him as.

Or, it might have familiarity with the runes through a third party. Vadderung was supposedly a mentor to Merlin, and I'd be 0% surprised if he'd tangled with them at some point. And wasn't there supposed to be some sort of connection between the island's runic alphabet and the Hecatean Hags from the comic? Maybe it had dealings and was frustrated to be countered by something similar to their alphabet.

Rashid still considered it a possibility Harry had been coopted by the enemy because of all the hinky stuff he'd been adjacent to up until their conversation a few books later in TC.

I'd tend to read what he did in PG, and events that he might have been an unseen hand behind, as tests of Harry's alignment as much as favours to support Mab.

Perhaps he chained up the theater to keep his test under a measure of control.

DF Spoilers / Re: Who is Thomas talking to?

Also, do we know that only the British Prisoner is the only being in contemplation mode?

IIRC there was some Harry narration when he confined Thomas that there was only one other prisoner under the contemplation protocol.

It wasn't explicitly stated to be the British guy, but it's on the same tier of really strong implications as the blackstaff being MW's walking stick.

What actually happened in 1066.

The DV take on Merlin and Arthur.

Rashid's beginnings and how he became Gatekeeper.

What drove Ebenezar to do Tunguska, Krakatoa, or New Madrid.

Some Kincaid stuff - what Eb has against him, or what he has against Nicodemus.

The Stokerlypse.

I suspect when Harry finds out that Molly was prepared to sleep with Carlos, despite what ended up happening, Harry isn't exactly going to be cool with it. Particularly inner Harry.

I'm not sure he's going to find out at all. But he wanted her to stop pining after him, so her finding an alternative attachment with an age-appropriate good (at the time, anyway) person seems like about the best case scenario. I'd think he'd be more sorry for her tragic predicament.

I don't believe that Thomas' problem with the Swartalves will be solved by proving that Nemesis coerced him.  I suspect that Thomas will do something overt that squares his debt with the Swartalves.
...
Thomas saves Mr. Etri's life or the life of a family member or several Swartalves.

Ah. Perhaps. Alternately, that might also be satisfied by Harry and/or Lara doing something for them (on the order of or more significant than Molly's favour in Bombshells) and requesting clemency for Thomas as their boon.

I'm not sure if Nem-Justine demanded the attack solely for the sake of its impact on Harry, or that was a two-fer on top of some particular reason for wanting Mr. Etri gone. If it's the latter, stopping her with a dramatic Starborn exorcism on Nemesis at  the last minute might fit the bill.

DF Spoilers / Re: Is Lasciel really a fallen angel?
« on: December 28, 2021, 11:01:11 PM »
Namshiel appears to have thrown in his lot with Marcone, less than happy with Nick, we know that there are also a hidden faction working with the Black Council that worries Nick, Lasciel is suddenly interested in her child with Harry and willing to make an alliance but not out of obeisance to Nick, out of necessity.

Nick’s power over the Denarians is at its weakest in 2,000 years, so we may see more a mere two books after Next Book. We may find out who was the Denarian on the Black Council (I call Tessa, it will hurt Nick the most, and he had little control over her, I think Nick kept Namshiel on a very tight reign, his speech was archaic suggesting Nick put him in cold storage when he didn’t need him for big magic)

Mostly agreed. Namshiel seems to have been more aligned with Tessa than Nic, though. And his archaic speech was probably more a function of not caring enough about human affairs to keep up to date - he kept his last host tightly enslaved and mostly just focused on his magical experiments for quite a while up until Michael killed that host.

Realizing there is a Black Council mole among the Denarians and suspecting 1) it's Tessa 2) she's setting him up as her scapegoat ... that would make a real good motivation to strike out on his own. Maybe coming to more of a partnership relationship with Marcone is a product of realizing he can't afford to be the magic nerd anymore, and needs a power base independent of being part of anyone else' cabal.

Maybe she just fell in with a bad crowd and it was peer pressure like with Crowley

Pretty sure there was some WOJ that she got exiled for trying to play both sides for her own ends during Lucifer's rebellion. Which kind of explains why her relationship with the other 29 is mostly transactional, rather than being a proper member in the Anduriel/Nic or Imariel/Tessa cabals.

Alfred is an ally not a power and harry’s Intellectus and his ability to manipulate the structure of the island are the only powers demonstrated by Harry to date as Warden. Maeve at one point neutralised Alfred with sufficient stacked Fae power, there is therefore at least one recorded instance that Harry could not rely upon Alfred as an ally on the Island.

Did she really neutralize Alfred, or was he just sandbagging to play for time?

Mab thanked him for his restraint afterward. Suggests he could have done more but chose not to.
