DFRPG / Re: Writeable/Safeable Char. Sheet?

I need a fill-able character sheet where you can up the level of the skill cap (like add fantastic to it if the game ever reaches this point).Has anyone put such a thing together?

If you are using spreadsheet it is fairly easy to create nested IFs to handle the cases.

For example, if cell B118 is the text for power level then:
  • =IF(OR(B118="Chest-Deep";B118="Submerged");"Superb";"Great")
could be put in cell F118

  • =IF(F118="Great";"+4";IF(F118="Superb";"+5";"???"))
could be put in the cell where you put the numeric skill cap and

  • =IF(B118="Feet in the Water";20;IF(B118="Up to Your Waist";25;IF(B118="Chest-Deep";30;IF(B118="Submerged";35;"Err"))))
In the cell where "Total Skill Points Available goes.

You can have another cell sum up skill points (multiplying by cost).

A similar cell could be set for Base Refresh Level
  • =IF(B118="Feet in the Water";6;IF(B118="Up to Your Waist";7;IF(B118="Chest-Deep";8;IF(B118="Submerged";10;"Err"))))

Similarly Total Refresh Adjustment could be summed and then Adjusted Refresh determined.

If you know what you are doing you should be able to whip one up in a few hours (4-8 hrs).

Like I said ...

Only concern is legality of distributing, but I have no problem discussing WHAT I did and HOW (example: I used "m m m m m m m m" in Wingdings for Stress trackers to get those nice round fill holes)

Anyone allready made on?

Yep, I made an Open Office version that can track or aid in creation of a character of any/all of the four levels.
I have not yet gotten it to sync stresses :(

Actually designed it to accept 4 characters and parse each of their stories (Aspect #3) onto one printable page so they can be circulated around a table and discussed/joined to get the cross stories (#4 & #5).
If you have more than 4 players a second copy would be needed for those characters/stories.

The version that handles all four phases (Feet in Water through Submerged) I created for myself for character building.

Only concern is legality of distributing, but I have no problem discussing WHAT I did and HOW (example: I used "m m m m m m m m" in Wingdings for Stress trackers to get those nice round fill holes)

1) Water

Water grounds out magic. My first thought would be to immerse the wizard in water(use a waterproof mouse and keyboard and it should block the field. Though, I never figured out outside of a rube goldberg machine how the hell he would turn it on.

Computers can work inside of oil (current ones appear to be mineral oil but I swear I heard cooking oil in the past ... do a search and you will also get pictures :)  )

So, if the computer is sealed in oil and both the computer and Wizard are located underwater (preferably in running water, like a swim tank or such) then as long as the power in is shielded as well the computer should be fine.

DFRPG / Re: Fudge Dice
« on: July 06, 2010, 03:44:24 PM »
dresdenized fudge dice seem like a nice idea...

a pentacle or a bob-skull for +
and a snowflake for the unseelie court or a denarius for -

or something like that... i bet you are tons more creative...

I can see all four being different or 4 sets ...
  • Sword for plus, Coin for negative
  • Pentacle & Bob-skull works too (again, player calls or table standard)
  • Snowflake & Leaf for +/- (table rules or player calls in advance which is plus ...)
  • ??? ... ???

For the last, probably a gun and a staff (or gun and spell, whatever).   ;D

That said, here's how I'd do it with a warding circle

My own feeling was that knowing humans have the Internet maybe powerful Wizards have a Spectral Net that uses either crystal balls or similar devices and "Bobs" (either TV "Ghost in the Skull" versions or tethered Air Spirits) to create information relays and storage.  Been thinking on that ever since I first saw the TV show (read the books afterwards and thought maybe sprite type faes as "messengers" and such).

DFRPG / Re: Is a Pure Mortal viable?
« on: July 05, 2010, 09:43:27 PM »
Anyway don't forget that you will have a lot of fate poits. 12 base refresh plus a couple of relevant aspects (strange luck, Murphy stalks me (Him not Her!), chivilary?) will enable you to slip by easyly.

Just don't give into temptation of using too much refresh. Supernaturals have to but if you try to compete with them with mortal stunts, you won't be happy. Just select a few necessary stunts and bank on fate.

Having extra fate points allows you to do more triggering Aspects ...

Is it possible to trigger other player's aspects to give them a boost?  If so then a "mere mortal" could potentially be the most versatile character in the game!

DFRPG / Re: So... a change in the shipping date for the DFRPG books.
« on: July 05, 2010, 09:29:57 PM »
I know they are a small company and had a lot of shipments to deal with, but they were able to get the books to Alliance early enough that my FLGS had it before any pre-orders. Why couldn't they have started shipping them to customers at the same time?

Sometimes companies have to make deals with distributors that they won't ship product to customers before it arrives at the distributor.

In other cases it is the shear volume of work involved.

Here is an example for you.  Let us suppose for a second that the minute the books arrived at the publisher's warehouse they started processing orders.  Since distributors often order by the box the easiest orders to process & ship and dealt with first (either whole boxes first or by order size) and those are set out for FED UP* to ship.  Then they work on the next and next until as many orders are shipped as possible that day.  Odds are there may be either 2+ people dealing with orders (a paperwork processor and 1+ distribution people) or one person is doing the whole show.

So, the first day they unload the truck and them maybe process a few orders.  The second day they process all the large orders and start on the smaller orders.  Depending on the number of orders they may still be processing orders 3+ days later and by this time the books have likely hit the distributor and in some cases the books are starting to hit the stores. Well, once that happens the orders coming in increase and if it is but one person he may be answering the phone taking orders, processing orders that came in via the web, talking to distributors about books damaged in shipping, and trying to fill tons of oordinary customer orders at the same time.  Well, eventually, over the course of a number of days, he has taken case of the distributors, has taken care of the preorders, and is still working on all the new orders off and on fairly regularly for the next month or so.

Now comes the wait for the customer.  Books may arrive within 3 days of being shipped or they may not.  They may take 6 days or they may take 1-2 weeks to reach destinations within the lower 48 states (and in some cases reach overseas customers sooner). Now then, having shipped 100+ packages (maybe well over 100 ... possibly WAY over 100) it is likely that at least some have "problems".  Maybe the name is wrong, maybe the address was incorrect, maybe FED UP mangled the package, maybe it got lost, but for whatever reason a certain percentage will be delayed, destroyed, lost, or rerouted.  In my experience it is up to 5% may end up "return to sender", often for a zip code that is one digit off or such.

So, things happen, which is why the old standard of "wait 6-8 weeks for delivery" is still a good adage in my book (and experience) and for anything faster I am grateful!

Seconded.
I agree about the suggestions. There is A LOT of good stuff there, but yikes on looking through it.

Also, would it be possible to sticky or make a subforum for the various individual games being created? Like the Houston game, the San Fran one etc. It would make it tremendously easier to keep track of the info for the players who use it as a game reference. Also easier for new players to get the game info.

Thanks!

I could see games being played and Cities created in same sub-forum, or different, but either way a few good solid groupings would definitely help immensely.  Too many and it will fracture and less cross-posts ... too few and things get lost and very few people even see it unless it is resurrected later (like I did with the item thread ... twice!)

and even abducts musicians to play eternally for them in the Nevernever

Actually, they would be more likely to replace them with Changelings, at least for a while, and may explain why bands often come out with nothing new for a while then suddenly get inspired again and reinvigorate their careers.   ;)

I would also include that the Fae would be one reason that if you are up in any large building outside of downtown virtually all you see is trees with a random top of a building sticking out here or there.  Same applies to Racine, but more so (from the lighthouse you can see maybe 6 buildings including those downtown.

Site Suggestions & Support / RPG Subforums
« on: July 04, 2010, 06:31:59 AM »
I was looking through the Dresden Files RPG forum and I notice a few things:

1) A number of patterns / types of threads
2) there are 978+ threads on a relatively new game
3) threads get buried very quickly

It is good the forum is so active, but it can cause "problems" as well.  (I know of games out there that have been around for around a decade that never had this volume of daily activity and total maybe 3x the post count all told)

Where the problem comes in is that posts get buried faster than people can look at them, posts and questions get duplicated more, and posts get lost very easily.

A few buckets (sub-forums) within the category could help immensely, probably one for cities, one for magic & items, one for creatures & characters, and one for general or some other set of groupings.    Separating out cities would help encourage "group" effort and suggestions by making them easier to find and track.  The rest separate the general patterns and distributions effectively reducing post count in each to 1/3rd to 1/4th current total.  That would help slow down the post lost rate.  ;D

Not certain if it is doable or advisable, but it is my comment from the peanut gallery.

I've been wondering about this latest violent crime wave in Chicago.

Or the Great Chicago Fire actually being started by a Wizard ...

Same with the London Fires.

We won't even get into the San Franciscan Earthquake but there is probably a reason why the Red Court King has been plotting against Wizards for a century or more ...   :D

With a 4-quad I would seriously consider adding the resource table and other tables in that section as well.

I have been hearing disturbing creakings in my binding as well.
For most RPG books the binding would be sufficient (and is typically considered high quality) but when books start exceeding 300 pages they often have unusually high stress loads due to torquing IIRC.  Always had trouble with Champions RPG books as well for that reason.

Similar size / page softcovers will often start shedding pages even sooner due to the glue getting torqued too much.
