DFRPG / Re: Keeping Wizard PCs from overshadowing non-Wizard PCs
« on: August 04, 2012, 02:39:18 AM »
My NYC Campaign is beginning to form up. Or at least the concepts are. My group is looking at another 6 months of the Pathfinder Campaign were in nwo, then my Dresden Game rolls in. Anyhow, here's what I'm looking at so far for characters by their High Concepts:
Prophisized "Angel" Daughter of Aphrodite (Yep, she's a halfblood Victoria's Secret Supermodel with a prophecy about her)
Veteran War Wizard Looking for a Cause (Player is angling for a wizard not happy with the Council's choices, looking for something to fight for other than just survival. My game is while the Vampire War is still going on)
Red Court Infected ex-CTU Agent (Sorta Jack Bauer as a Infected. Mercenary for hire now)
Clueless Scion of Tymora ('Luckiest' person on Earth. Drawbacks though. Using powers has a hunger track, where he must take the luck form those around them, ie putting an aspect of bad luck temporarily on someone, not always a PC, for each hunger box)
Only Daughter of the Leananshide (Need I say more?)

My concern is this. How do I keep the Wizard form solving every problem with Thaumaturgy? Need information, summon a demon and bargain for info, or summon a LOA? Looking for someone, tracking spell. etc.

Just looking for some advice here

Noticed this and thought I would mention...

Just wanted to add on another point to the OP:

Consider that if the original Denarian plan was only to abduct Marcone, there was no reason for them to base themselves on Demonreach.  Any quiet, out-of-the-way place would suffice.  When Mab dangles Archive-shaped bait in front of them, they all of a sudden need to prepare a long-term holding cell for her -- a strong confluence of ley-lines.

Actually, Mab states she cannot find Marcone, so they were probably using Demnoreach to fuel the veil, latter supported by Harry and Luccio's conversation about the island.

In SF, Harry was out on the water standing on a reef. It made his magic more difficult to summon, but not impossible.

Sounds like a great idea to me.
And any GM that lets a player pull off a 145 complexity ritual without the ritual itself being the central theme of an epic story?
Deserves  the consequences to his game.

Ascension ritual, anyone?

Just to mention, after scorching Tessa in SF, Harry heard a whisper, like that of a calm old man, essentially laying out his current situation and telling him to run. This occurred while holding onto the handle of Fiddelichius.

Air/Force lock picking spell. Seriously, HOW many times has harry forced a lock when he didn't need to, or it ended up being a bad idea? (SF scene with the Hobs, I'm looking at you)!

I would also put in Sponsored Magic of some sort. Otherwise how would Boramir have used it as a weapon for Gondor? The ring is a conduit of Sauron's strength, so it seems like someone who succumbed to the ring would be granted power beyond just bossing around the other ring bearers.

DFRPG / Re: Milestones: What ratio of Significant to Major?
« on: November 14, 2011, 05:20:12 AM »
I think Milestones should be set at the pace of plot, not sessions. Which means the GM needs to have at least some idea where they intend to take the story.

With the Dresden Files, Jim knows the rough beginning, middle, and end of the story. He knows that the series is going to start fairly street level, ramp up steadily up through GS, and really start getting epic leading up to the BAT. Knowing how far you plan on taking the story and what challenges you intend for the characters to face, or they could end up facing by accident, will help you plan where to place milestones, and what level they should be.

If you want to go epic, Milestones need to be fairly regular, with a number of major challenges that can be definitively overcome to justify Major Milestones. If you want to keep it street level, you might need more of a model like the early seasons of the X-Files. Most adventure/sessions will be of the monster of the week variety, with only Significant or Major Milestones around the end of each "season".

I like it, but I would have the skills closer to this.

+5 Endurance, Conviction
+4 Presence, Intimidation
+3 Guns, Weapons
+2 Might, Fists
+1 Alertness, Athletics

I would refer to Mort as a highly specialized practitioner, with full Thamaturgy, and maybe specialized Evocation.

As for refinement for a FP, Dresden has said several times in the books that if some one practices enough, they can get scary good at a small number of spells. I believe Bianca was an example of this.

Its kinda on the old side, but I don't remember it coming up before.

In PG Luccio's boot camp was attacked as a distraction for the RC. It was stated by Eb that only the Merlin, Listens to Winds, Ancient Mai and Morgan knew where the camp was. But this may have been during the time Peabody was warping Luccio's mind, so he could have gotten it from her.

You'd be surprised at how easily a straight line can achieve one's goals, especially since one could force the target in one straight line, and then force them in another direction in a following exchange. And I see no reason why it's being a true grapple matters. It's an offensive block that is capable of moving the target, ergo it's close enough as makes little difference.

Now I'm envisioning all sorts of ways one could do this thematically. An earth wizard having the earth jut up to encase someone and then pulling them towards him. A water wizard using a torrent of water to force the target in a direction. Spirit and air are fairly obvious and less cinematic. The only issue I could see is with fire, though I suppose you could use someone's fear of fire for a similar effect.

Maybe change the skill. Trading Brawn(?) for Discapline when defending against fire?

DFRPG / Re: Loot the bodies!

*****Random Ideas. YMMV****

As a GM you can largely prevent unexpected loot turning into a problem. Think about turning high value items taken from bad guys quickly turning into tags or social or mental conflicts. Marcone would never let a suitcase with half a mil just walk away. But in keeping with the loot that no longer has an owner...

Make each loot item a "Consequence".

Mild        +2 to one resource check, lasts until the end of the next scene. The money you swiped from a thug's
wallet. By the end of the next scene you could have gotten to an ATM, and that small amount of cash
would be useful. Might be used to counter act a compel like "Lost My Wallet".
Moderate +4 to one resource check, lasts until the end of the story. This could be one valuable item or a sack of
cash, which may come in handy during the story. After that, it probably went for rent.
Severe    +6 to one resource check, lasts until the end of the next story. Like the briefcase full of money Murphy
got during Aftermath. Its a lot of money, but if it stays around for too long, it will find itself dwindling
to pay rent, or smaller needs for the Paranet.
Extreme   +8 to resource checks, lasts until the story says otherwise. Imagine the last season of Angel where
the team got Wolfram and Hart.

This could also be turned into another stress track for social or mental conflicts involving extortion or ransoms. You could take consequences to you Resource skill like you do your other stress tracks. If you have seen "Proof of Life",
you can see where I'm taking this.

Try to allow only planned loot, so you can stat in advance.
