DF Spoilers / Re: Who is Thomas talking to?
« on: January 26, 2022, 12:58:53 AM »
Interesting thought that it could be one of the Nem-fected.  Have we decided whether that ability has limitations? In other words, is there a limit to the number of individuals that can be infected?  Much like the 13 corner hounds, or something like that.
Presumably He Who Walks Beside can only split his attention in so many directions, but beyond that we have had no idea or hints from Jim as to the outsider's capacity yet.

DF Spoilers / Re: What Should Butters Ask For?
« on: December 30, 2021, 11:03:45 AM »
Honestly, from a meta perspective, what he should probably ask is to have Mab seek a way to remove the Death Curse on Harry.  It's a big part of the reason he drives people away, gets them hurt, or otherwise isolates from them / keeps them in the dark for "their own good" (see: Ramirez), and it's resulted in a number of physical and emotional scars to everyone around him.  At this rate something will happen to Maggie too.  Mab would even have incentive to do it now, with this proposed marriage to the White Vampire Court; the curse could easily affect Lara too and that would be bad news for the White Court if she were crippled in some way after the arranged marriage was complete.

I'm fairly certain Ma-excuse me, the Winter Queen, has been taking advantage of the curse to help make sure her Knight is strong enough to stand and fight on his own, but turning a curse into an asset can only go so far.  At some point it'll be a hindrance to her plans.  And Butters would be the most likely person to know about the curse since he was literally part of the team helping save Harry's life when the curse was first placed.

But, that's a meta perspective.  What's LIKELY going to happen is that Butters is going to find out about some plan or other of the Queen's and call in his favor to have her change how it plays out, so that fewer/no innocent lives are caught in the crossfire even if it makes her plan less efficient / more risky.

DF Spoilers / Re: Harry should have trusted Ramirez
« on: December 20, 2021, 09:47:50 PM »
I'd also like to point out that this may not entirely have been of Harry's own free will.  "Die alone".  The necromancer's death curse that he's been living under.  The full phrase that this is referring to is "You're going to die alone", a phrase often aimed at people who inevitably push others away, find themselves ostracized or outcast, and generally act in ways that cause other people to not associate with them or not WANT to associate with them.

Think about it.  When Murphy died, it was noted that Harry was already treating her like she was dead or utterly incapacitated due to her injury - even though she was legitimately able to get back up to 80% (which is still better than Butters had when he first helped save the world).  When he saw Butters after becoming the Winter Knight, he didn't stop to say hi and chat with friends, he paid his debt to Bob and got ready to go again - something Butters called him out on.

It may have even had influence on why that Fallen Angel was able to manipulate Harry so easily into choosing to BE the Winter Knight in the first place, and the subsequent actions which SEVERELY harmed Molly's sanity and put her on the path towards becoming the Winter Maiden - forever keeping her from seeking Harry's embrace as she tried to do previously.

Death curses are powerful.  They're subtle.  They're insidious.  Is it really that much of a stretch to think that it nudged Harry in the direction of keeping Ramirez out of it for his own safety, even though such an act basically treats Ramirez as a child who's not big/capable enough to handle himself?

DF Spoilers / Re: The Blackstaff picks his successor.......
« on: May 11, 2021, 09:46:01 AM »
I wonder though, could you use the Eye with the Blackstaff. A wizards Staff Has a Knob On The End after all, could PT and BG JUST been Jim setting that gag up? Eb dies using the eye on the Blackstaff fuelled by his hate of Vampires.
Interesting theory but he would somehow have to infiltrate Demonreach to do it. Harry's not going to be taking it out of the island's vault any time soon.  I doubt old Ebenezar is stronger or more skilled than Merlin - the Original Merlin - himself, so it would have to be a pretty unique blind spot that would allow him access to the prison itself instead of simply standing on the island's surface.

Question, when Jim said the Blackstaff chooses it's successor, did he mean the person or the staff?

Might change the way we look at this if it's the staff that chooses

Now that's a good question.  The blackstaff is both the role and the artifact itself.  However Jim doesn't tend to mince words, and he did specifically say "Chooses HIS successor".  So as cool as it would be if the staff did the choosing on its own I'm pretty sure it's the actual wizard in the role who picks the next wizard to fill that role.

DF Spoilers / Re: So is Marcone Black Council now?
« on: April 14, 2021, 10:41:48 PM »
I'd also like to point out that the Black Council is on a lot of people's bad sides.  Nicodemus hates them, the Merlin hates them, Harry wants them brought down and so does Ebenezer.  Compare that to fighting alongside the Winter Queen, her allies, the White Council and more besides.  There's no way Marcone would put such a big bullseye on his own head by joining them as a potential lackey when he could work with the people who are winning instead - and stand among them as an equal.

DF Spoilers / Re: Solution for Thomas?
« on: April 01, 2021, 09:59:31 AM »
The Bigfoots and bigfoot-kin certainly have enough life essence that a White Court vampire could feed and survive, but that's not the problem here.

Thomas has already been fed upon by his own Hunger.  Part of his soul, his mind memories and will, have already been devoured by his own curse. If it was a simple matter of feeding it they'd have already done it.  Harry needs to CURE the vampirism so that what's left of Thomas will be able to actually be healed, and maybe even reclaim some of what's been lost to the Hunger.

You could feed him a dozen human lives and refuel him completely and it wouldn't undo the harm that the Svartalves inflicted.

...
1.  "Yeah and that's not the end of it.  Huge battle in Chicago where he's from.  A Titan, a fucking Titan goes there destroying the place.  Dresden is seen running the scene with her following...  Then...  Then she's gone... "

2. "What do you mean gone"?

1.  "She's gone man.  They are being pretty tight lipped about it.  This Dresden is seriously scary"
3. "Not only that but he's the Winter Knight too.  The deadliest and most terrifying one the Winter Queen's ever had, she said so herself."

2. "Wait, isn't the Winter Knight just a hired goon who goes around at her command killing people?"

3. "Nope, every aspect of Summer and Winter has a role in this world, the Knights are more than just killers.  I haven't gotten there in my studies yet, but I overheard some of the gossip between the Elders."

DF Spoilers / Re: “A Sorceror Is A Wizard Without A Hat”
« on: March 15, 2021, 08:19:16 PM »
Interesting idea, but I would point out that Sorcery has a specific connotation in the Dresden Files.  Specifically, they're magic users who specialize in evocation magic - lots of direct attacks and damage, elemental powers, that sort of thing.  And wizards as a whole look down on sorcerers because they are generally lacking in versatility or ability to do "Real" magics.

So even now he's a wizard by craft and nature, even if he's not officially recognized as one he still doesn't qualify as a Sorcerer.

We've already seen some of it with Harry vs Ebenezar on the docks, and Harry's knowledge of Molly's capabilities certainly saved him from the instadeath that Eb threw at him as a last resort.  And there's Anastasia who was the only person that could make those unique Warden swords.  Hell, even Harry has stuff like that - remember his Bazooka Staff trick?  No one else has done anything like it that we've ever seen.

It'll be interesting to see what the rest of them are capable of.

DF Spoilers / Re: Was Eb a lot more like Harry in the past?
« on: March 07, 2021, 11:04:06 AM »
Maybe Eb is right, and Dresden is just naive about the world.  Maybe there isn't a single non human that should be trusted.
I'm gonna be that guy....  Toot-Toot.  Also Elder Gruff, River Shoulders, Vadderung/Kringle, many would argue the Angels are trustworthy....

Back to the topic at hand though... I'd say it's entirely possible.  It's a pretty common thing in storytelling where the people who are the best, strongest, and most experienced, are either the ones who played it the safest (the Merlin) or the ones who dove headfirst into the dark, crazy and scary, and survived it long enough to become a very potent individual (Dresden).  And considering that Ebenezar is the Blackstaff, I'm inclined to say he went through the latter path to achieve his strength and skill.  So he may well have started as a similar person to Harry and just be further down that path.

DF Spoilers / Re: Does anyone else find Maggie unconvincing?
« on: March 05, 2021, 10:49:50 AM »
I also don't see what any of the Fallen have to offer her in the first place.
Oh that part's easy.

"Your father goes out and takes on the dark scary things of the world. But one day he won't come back; he's fighting things more powerful than him every day, and one day they'll catch him.  One day they'll kill him.  One day something will kill Mouse, steal Bonnie, and you'll be left all alone.  Poor defenseless Margaret, barely able to go to school without getting seizures.  You'll be alone in the world, pitied by everyone, or worse... exploited.

But there's a way to prevent that.  I can help you.  Just take up the coin and I'll teach you how to stand there by his side, so you can face the darkness together, and when he needs help the most... It'll be YOU who saves HIM."

DF Spoilers / Re: Thomas's cure: Bonea or Lhea?
« on: March 01, 2021, 10:19:26 PM »
It wasn't zippedy doo da on Harry's part, if you'll remember he drove himself into exhaustion and clinical depression trying to find a cure for Susan.  He also drove Bob crazy trying to find a cure...
Clarification: He has no answers, no clues, not even a starting point after all that work.  He's got a big fat zippo at the moment. That's what I meant by "zippidy doo da", Lea's info would be a far better starting point than the Nothing he has now.
Quote
...so if Lea could have provided one, he would have traded his soul for it in my opinion.Harry was shocked that Lea could do it if I remember correctly but I also seem to remember her saying it wasn't a cure.  Also you are dealing with two different things, in the case of Thomas, the possession of an actual demon, in the case of Susan it was more of an infection.
She never asked his soul for the info.  She asked him what he would be willing to offer in return, in a pretty standard Fae bargain.
Lea offered to show him how she did it.  Harry turned her down:
Thank you for posting that part of the book.  I will also point out that this offer of the bargain happened before Harry became the Winter Knight, and spent a far greater amount of time among the Fae.  He could probably make a damn good bargain with the experience and training he's had since that point in the series.

Poorly trained for what? What exactly is important in a wizards training?
Knowledge, particularly knowledge of spells and potions as well as what is effective vs ineffective against various supernatural beings.  And in that regard, Harry had one of the best teachers of all.

Bob taught him the spells to enforce his duster, the spells he uses in investigation, ALL the potions he's ever used, every bit of supernatural knowledge and lore, etc. etc.  And everything Harry ever learned from Bob was for a practical purpose in one form or another, which means he learned it well and it stuck with him because he had uses for each and every bit of knowledge.

It's true that by the standards of other Wizards Harry is very lacking in overall wizardly knowledge.  But he has cherry-picked the most useful pieces and made them his own thanks to an extremely helpful skull.  He is NOT poorly trained as a wizard any more.

I doubt that Lea could heal him anyway,  what she did for Susan was temporary if I remember correctly because Harry got all excited when she did it, and asked her about it.
Lea said that she put their Hungers to sleep, in response to his question.  she didn't explain how she did so or what her magic targeted in order to accomplish that. Harry WOULD have to offer something in return for the knowledge, but it would be a better starting point than his current start of "zippedy doo da".
