DFRPG / Re: What was your most "Harry" in-game moment?
« on: January 19, 2011, 12:49:04 PM »
When taking on The Krampus in the final battle (the Grinch's top lieutenant) in my "Have Yourself A Very Harry Christmas", the players started doing smack talk in rhyme.

"You've fought with great skill all is not well, goodbye and goodnight, I'll see you in hell!"

I know there was a short story in one of them too, which one had the short story?

And thanks for answering the questions Tallyrand :)

There's a writeup of Harry telling some Wardens in training about how he almost botched a phobophage infestation in OW if that's what you mean.

Can you elaborate on this point? When was it used as the only explanation how she can have computers as a hobby?

IIRC, this is the sequence of events:

Luccio mentions that computers were her hobby to Harry.
Harry gives some sort of surprised reaction to indicate he doesn't believe her.
Luccio clarifies that she reads about them, with no indication that she actually physically interacts with them.

Can someone get the book where this exchange takes place. It should help us figure this out?

Luccio's writeup in OW 176 largely supports the idea that she sticks to the theoretical.

And why is purely theoretical interest so unbelievable?

DFRPG / Re: Why would the Autumn/Spring courts have Queens?

Given the waxing and waning nature of the courts, maybe Spring and Autumn are in wane during this era and in a few thousand years they'll be waxing again while Summer and Winter will be waning.

But taking her stating that she reads about computers as only reading about them would be just as, if not more, illogical.

Then why is that when it was used as the only explanation for how she can have computers as a hobby? And why can't someone have theoretical applications of something as a hobby? I have a friend who's pretty knowledgeable on modern weaponry. He's never going to use them.

That's more "room for growth" and "slots for potions". :)

Probably could have used a line to mention that  :D

Maria. Bad guys? They cheat.

Russel must be really bad at it then, because he's missing a Refinement and a half. ;D

Yeah... that's probably a goof-up.

Which one, Maria or Russel?

And now for the nitpicking... (sorry!)

Okay, the kinetomancer, Maria Emana, has Refinement which adds to her Control and Power--which is explicitly not possible according to Your Story, which says that if you have Channeling, you can only buy Refinement for the additional item slots.  With italics, even.

Maybe Lawbreaker repeals that restriction. Might explain why Russel from YS seems to have 3 refinement even though he doesn't have the base restrictions for a sorcerer,  (then again, it doesn't actually show what he spent them on, since his stats seem to cover only 1.5 counts of Refinement, and his focus items would be covered by his Channeling and Thaumaturgy powers)

But I do not recall her denying using them though.

Yeah, but if she doesn't state that she uses them, and she states that she reads about them in response to a reaction of "how can you use them without frying them", I think the default assumption here is that she doesn't have any practical experience with them.

Also the game mentions in her writeup that "Computers-the theory of, at least-are her hobby.

In a game I'm playing in, my character is a stated technomancer. She is very good at hex wards, and she has designed a magic laptop (It's described as a two-way voodoo doll to a very delicately woven thaumaturgical link to a computer. She uses the Sight to place the magic in such a way as to not fry the circuitry and layers in a hex buffer to direct hex effects away from the hardware). It's quite complex.

You know this how?

I believe when she says she's interested in computers, Harry gives her a surprised look, before she clarifies that she reads about them.

DFRPG / New Trappings
« on: January 15, 2011, 06:36:26 AM »
I had an idea for a new trapping for Endurance that I figure I'd share (after I realized the stunt I based on it was pretty crappy), but I figure I would open it up to any new trapping ideas you've had.

So, without further ado I present my new trapping for Endurance

Endurance

Take The Hit.

Rather than avoiding damage, you know you can take it, whether it be through size, supernatural toughness, regeneration, armor or some combination thereof. Calculate your Hardiness rating against the attack. This is equal to your Armor + your highest Physical Stress Box + the level of Recovery (1 for Inhuman, 2 for Supernatural, 3 for Mythic) -4, and cannot be less than 1. If the attack would satisfy your Catch, you do not get the bonuses provided by your Toughness or Recovery powers. Furthermore, the defense negates size-based attack bonuses and can be used when surprised (though an opponent can Tag a Surprised Aspect on the defender). If the defender's Hardiness is equal to or greater than the attack's Weapon Rating, then they may roll Endurance to take the hit. However, this can risky. If the defender chooses to Take The Hit, but the Weapon Rating is higher than the defender's Hardiness, they can only defend against the attack at Poor (-1).

For example, Reginald is being attacked by a Troll. He unloads his semi-automatic into it, but the Troll is not vulnerable to those kinds of bullets, so it defends by Taking The Hit. The Troll's Hardiness is 7 (4 base from the stress boxes provided by a Good endurance, 2 from Hulking Size, 2 from the stress boxes provided by Inhuman Toughness, 1 from Armor provided by Inhuman Toughness, 2 from Superhuman Recovery, -4), while the bullets are only Weapon Rating 2. The Troll can use its Good Endurance as opposed to its Fair Athletics, and Reginald does not get +1 due to the size difference.

Reginald's friend Rick, on the other hand, has a shotgun, and many shotgun shells have steel pellets. He fires at the Troll, and his player successfully Makes a Declaration that the Troll is stupid and inexperienced with mortal firearms, so it overconfidently tries to Take The Hit. Because the shotgun satisfies the Troll's Catch, the Troll's Hardiness against the shotgun is only 2 (4 from Good Endurance, 2 from Hulking Size, no Toughness or Recovery, -4). The Shotgun has a Weapon Rating of 3, and is therefore effective. The Troll rolls at -1 as it stupidly blunders into the attack, and Rick gets +1 against the Troll because of the size difference.

Endurance: Take The Hit.

Requirements: combination of total Physical Stress Boxes and armor equal to at least 5, called Protection (i'd get a better name, but I gotta go soon).

You know how to use your natural toughness, supernatural toughness, size and/or armor to maximum effect. When facing an attack whose Weapon Rating is 3 less than your Protection, you can use Endurance to defend, rather than Athletics. Furthermore, enemies who gain a bonus to hit due to Hulking Size lose it as you are using your massive bulk to withstand their tiny weapons.  You may not apply bonus Physical Stress from Toughness powers if the attack would satisfy your Catch.

I kinda want to make it a trapping of Endurance rather than a stunt, since this is far weaker than most "replace trapping X with the following skill" stunts.

and it would be the right time to get some eye sized nifty item of power.

Like the GURPS write-up of Mr Teatime?
