For me, creating characters, villainous or otherwise, is a lot like method acting. What does the character want, and how does (s)he go about achieving it? What is (s)he trying to accomplish in each scene? What secrets is (s)he concealing, and from whom? What is the character doing when not actually "on stage"? Keeping these things in mind helps to inform the dialogue and characterization.

Author Craft / Your strangest lines out of context :D
« on: January 29, 2014, 04:20:54 PM »
Just the other night I penned the following:
"He shouldered the leg, hiked up his skirt, and clumped up the stairs" and it occurred to me that taken out of context of the story it actually sounds kind of odd. Does anyone else have a  line they've written which sounds weird (or makes no sense at all) outside the story it appears in?

Passed 100K last night on the Big Damn Sequel.

As per a half-assed New Year's resolution, I've been making the effort to write at least 1000 words a day on one or the other of my two first-drafts-in-progress,and it seems to be working; 1K/day is proving to be a good balance between (A) pushing myself and getting stressed, and (B) writing nothing and feeling guilty about it. At this pace I should have both drafts done by mid-February, and can start on the revision process.

Got about 26K here. Had some interesting characters; damned if I could figure out what to do with them. It'll come, it'll come...

Still behind, but making the effort to do at least 1000 words/night, which is really the only time I have to write.

So...how's everyone doing?
I'm running behind on my wordcount; lost a day to Real Life stuff and am trying to catch up as well as work out how to get some action into what is thus far a rather static, single setting story. Got some interesting character stuff, though, and my Angel of Death is shaping up to be a far different character from what I'd originally envisioned...

I'm doing it this year--first attempt at an Urban Fantasy.
My NaNo name is drd1812.

ETA: I'd add you guys to my writing buddies but can't for the life of me figure out how.

Hit 95,000 on the Big Sequel last night, and then dumped 1000 that no longer worked.

Anyone doing NaNoWriMo this year?

Hit the 90K mark last night on the first draft of the sequel to my murder mystery. Got about 3/4 of a book now...

Got another 2000 words on The Sequel this afternoon, fixed some awkward bits.

One of my favorite alt-history novels is John Ford's The Dragon Waiting, in which the Battle of Bosworth Field goes the other way. It also has wizards and vampires.

Thanks; I've come across a couple of similarly themed lines in Snuff, but nothing too close yet. Fingers crossed that it's original.

Author Craft / So I think I may have plagarised Terry Pratchett...
« on: September 10, 2013, 04:32:52 PM »
A few days ago I wrote the following in my work in progress:
[suspicious]"He has his finger on the pulse of the city, even if he's only waiting for it to expire so he can steal its watch"[/suspicious]
...and can't help thinking this sounds familiar (and too funny) to be an original thought. Anyone recognize this phrase or something very like it from an existing work? I ran it through one of those plagiarism checker tools and it came up OK, but the tool in question appears to be for non-fiction works such as school assignments and may not have fiction in its database. Can anyone help?
