DFRPG / Re: Water Evocator Question
« on: October 07, 2012, 06:59:47 AM »
I would make the assumption that while magical fire can create natural fire (read magical = there then gone, natural = sticks around for the party), conjuring water and earth (or things related to such) would fall under being magical constructs that would fade once the power for it ran out. Basically, magically called water evaporates faster than regular water, probably like ectoplasm, so that would work as a good explanation as to why being hit with a torrent of magically conjured water wouldn't leave the target soaked. Now, that being said, redirecting the flow of water or using magic to tear up a fire hydrant or water line would have other implications.

That, or you could narrate the failed roll as missing entirely, or the bad guy ducking behind something that prevents him from getting wet. A failed roll doesn't necessarily mean the attack hit but did no damage, it just means the attack failed in some way.

There's no rule.

So really, it's up to you.

Personally I'd Compel once per separate problem. A problem could be "you spend four scenes fending off assassination attempts by 10 semi-competent drug addicts" or it could be "a warlock assassin tosses a killing spell at you". As long as it's roughly as dangerous as the cost/benefit of one Compel warrants.

That sounds a decent way of doing it, I think I'll probably steal this method, if that's alright with you? :P

I level it out by making sure he has to spend a decent amount of fate points.

I'd pay it per scene.

What you're essentially paying him for is the conflict his trouble starts, and the two hitmen are basically part of the same conflict.

Aside from that it's a matter of balance. One of my characters has the 'Insufferable Genius' Trouble, which he plays to a fault (though he will regret it). Naturally this brings up a load of opportunities for compels on that aspect, but it would also mean overloading him with fate points pretty much every time he speaks. This is a bit unfair to the other players, so I've limited the compels on it to once per scene (though exceptional cases are excluded from this). This gives him a decent chance to build up fate points, but also means he's got a limited supply, and of course there are some scenes where he just doesn't get a chance to speak. :P

DFRPG / Re: Character Concept Help: Infomancer

I'd be wary about giving your player too much power as an infomancer. Everyone writes things down, unless they know they're specifically going up against the Archive, so you'd basically have to treat the Emissary of the Archive as a seer, or a Third Law breaker: someone who can completely adjust the course of the game with a single move.

Then again, that can be fun too.

What about npcs? Would you allow refinement for those?

That was my thought, since sponsored magic doesn't really cover NPCs that well. After all, every Sidhe in Summer and Winter are beholden to their Queens, so building up personal debt to them is practically redundant.

I reckon we could do with a bunch of NPC stat sheets posted up on here with examples of various creatures that don't get covered in Our World. We've got a generic NPC list already, but it couldn't hurt to have other peoples' opinions on your own NPCs.

DFRPG / Statting the Sidhe
« on: September 14, 2012, 11:28:04 AM »
Hi again. Since I got such a good response/debate out of the veils question I figured I'd ask about the Sidhe here.

I've got a Naiad sidhe as a major npc in my game but I can't really decide whether to give it sponsored magic, evocation/thaumaturgy (with the caveat that I don't have it use non-faerie magic) or both.

Thoughts?

I'm actually not sure whether Dresden spirits are all vulnerable to sunlight. I think non-ghost ones might not be.

And anyway it's not clear what kind of damage the sun ought to do.

Yeah, that bit is best left to Aspects.

Oh, and one other edit I should make: Spiritual Symbiote should include You're Not Hurting Me.

Bob is vulnerable to sunlight, which is why he has to go out inside Mister during the day (or be in his skull). If we take him as standard for spirits (as has been implied), then most of them will disintegrate with the sunrise.

DFRPG / Re: All About Stunts!!
« on: September 07, 2012, 11:25:24 PM »
Float Like a Butterfly: When dodging using your Footwork, spend a fate point to gain a +2 to Fists.

For reference, Footwork is the stunt that lets you dodge using Fists rather than Athletics.

Any good? Should I remove the fate point requirement? I'm of the feeling though that if the fate point requirement is taken away it gives what amounts to a flat +2 to dodging, which is the major part of the Athletics skill, and could be used to give a flat +6/+7 skill in dodging to pure mortal characters, which I hold as (almost) physically impossible.

DFRPG / Veils
« on: September 06, 2012, 12:28:09 PM »
So I'm in an argument with one of my players because he sees veils (and the way they're described in the rulebook) as going against the stated rules for blocks.

He's claiming that veiling a person renders them immune to attacks, manoeuvres and blocks from multiple targets (assuming they don't break through the veil), which according to the rules is not possible (you can either target multiple people/objects against one action or one person/object against multiple actions, not both). I've ruled it as this:

Quote
The veil does not 'prevent' anything. It can work in a variety of ways, but the most common one is to bend light around the target, not to directly block another person's vision (that would be an illusion rather than a veil).

The mechanics for it would essentially be:

1) Pick the target for the veil.
2) Declare what you want to block (bend light around the target, in this case).
3) Roll for strength.
4) If anyone tries to pierce the veil they must roll higher than its strength.

This is exactly the same method used to create a shield, and that's how the rulebook essentially describes it, so I'm going to go with that.

Am I right in this or should veils be restricted as he wants them to be?

The point is she failed.  Her shadow fell in love with Harry and took his side and helped him..  The moment Lasciel's shadow truly becomes Lash, not just Harry's nickname for her, she says pointedly, softly, shaking her head, "She doesn't deserve you.."  So not just Harry scorned Lasciel, but her own shadow did.  Also remember what distressed Lasciel/Lash so much was when her host Harry died, she died.. So the fallen angel's revenge wasn't just on Harry it was on her shadow, Lash as well, both scorned her.

All the examples of whispering Vairelome posted happen after White Night. After Lash has sacrificed herself. After Lasciel's coin was dug up from its place in Harry's basement. Lasciel found out what had happened either at the moment the circle was broken (since Lash is still there she'd have had a link, albeit a weak one) or after she was recovered by Nicodemus (if she was).

Quote
No, we have no facts, it is never said that it was, those are merely guesses.  Since Lasciel's shadow had been doing all of the whispering and she got transformed back in White Night, she also got transformed into Lash by her love for Harry.  She became independent of Lasciel, there is evidence shortly after in White Night when she says "all that I can my host..." after Harry plays and just before he digs up the coin and gives to to Father Forthill, that Lash whispered to Harry.  That wasn't Lasciel, we also have the WOJ if you believe him that the only appearance of Lasciel after that was in Changes.

It's not being said that Lash was the one doing the whispering. We're saying that after Lasciel's coin was unburied she became the one to whisper in Harry's ear the depressing thoughts that have already been posted.

Quote
Oh Lasciel did appear in Changes and was the whispering shadow we see in GS.  My argument is she is not the one who is whispering anything to Harry in Turn Coat.. There is no evidence of it.

There are educated guesses. The series isn't finished so we can't look back with hindsight, only post our theories from the evidence we have in the released books. This seems like a semi-solid theory to me with decent evidence to back it up.

Quote
Except back in Death Masks through to that point in White Night, she was trying to seduce Harry to take up the coin.. He didn't, in the cave in White Night, her shadow tried desperately to get Harry to take up the coin, to save both their lives.  Harry refused.. Then Lasciel becoming Lash, says " she doesn't deserve you."  At that moment the fallen angel Lasciel became the woman scorned.  Not just by Harry, but by her own shadow because of Harry.  At that point she wanted them both dead.  And yeah, revenge is a dish best served cold.. She waited, till Harry reached his lowest point, along with facts he could not argue against.. 1] he was helpless. 2] He was little Maggie's father, while how she got into trouble maybe wasn't his fault, the fact that she was in the world, was.  "And it is all your fault.."  Those are not the words of seduction, those are the words of revenge.

True enough, we're just arguing that Lasciel possibly whispered more than once. Think of it as following a marked path to a river, rather than hoping to find an oasis. Chances are Harry would have found himself at the lowest point he could at some point, and Lasciel would be there, but it's also true that continued whispering would make him more likely to take the course of action that would result in his death. Besides, it fits Lasciel's MO to give subtle nudges every so often, rather than one big strike.

No offence, but not accepting canon because you don't like it doesn't make it any less a part of canon. Jim has stated that both Lasciel and Lash showed up in Ghost Story, which if we use deductive reasoning leaves only the Shadow and the Parasite as possible candidates for their appearance. Lash is obviously the parasite because she's stated as using Harry's soul as a battery during White Night (plus, Lasciel is an independent entity, no parasitism there). Lasciel therefore must have been the Shadow who whispered into Harry's ear.

That's about as much confirmation as you can get without it being directly stated that Lasciel was the Shadow.

It's a good theory, and fits well with canon. Uriel only had the power to act because the Shadow lied, which it didn't do in those three examples.

Also, it helps to know that Lasciel turned up in the last book, presumably as the Shadow. Lash also turned up and was likely the Parasite that kept Harry's heart going during his out of mortality experience. So we can assume that whispering into Harry's head may not have taken a mental link in order to occur.

Besides, Jim's world doesn't solely revolve around Harry. Well, it does, but other people have their own stories too.

Carlos' family has a restaurant and the White Court don't have many operations in LA. Morgan had his love for Luccio. Ebenezar has a truck load of stories mentioned in passing attributed to him. Hell, half of the Alphas left to go do their own thing rather than stay in Chicago to play protector to the city.
